  • Hey guys! Here's my tutorial on how to make a mashup in Ableton - of course, not all mashups involve just two songs, and don't have to use just the acapella and instrumental versions of a song, but just take this as a general guide if you can - it's a creative task, so remember to be creative about it :)
    Here are some timestamps (if anyone needs em):
    0:00 - Intro
    0:25 - Acapellas & Instrumentals
    1:14 - Grabbing your files
    3:26 - Working with keys
    5:06 - Finding song keys
    6:09 - Finding song BPMs
    7:49 - Importing your files
    8:39 - Syncing BPMs
    12:04 - Syncing keys
    16:10 - Changing overall BPM
    17:53 - Assembling the mashup
    25:10 - Adjusting track volumes
    28:31 - Reverb
    31:05 - EQ / Equalizers
    32:41 - Exporting your mashup

    This is a pretty good tutorial tbh. You explained the concepts in a way that's simple and easy to understand for someone new to mashup production. Honestly, if i had this long ago when i was still figuring out how to use Ableton, it would've helped me so much lol.

    I wasn't super clear about some things related to keys in the video, so I'll leave them in this comment:
    - The key after B major would be C major, even though the display on the video had nothing after B major. Just like notes on a piano, keys have a cyclic pattern - B is before C, but there is also another B 11 semitones above that C, and another C 12 semitones (an octave) above the first C.
    - There are multiple types of minor keys - if you're starting out I wouldn't worry about them but if you've followed the available steps and something sounds off you might be using a type of minor key that doesn't convert well to a song in a major key.
    - If you don't know what the key of a song is, and it's not on the database, just Google search it and see what comes up. If nothing does, you can always try playing it by ear, but if you're new, that might not be that reliable.
    - If you're stuck on a song's key or BPM just leave a comment here and I'll test it out for myself and get back to you :)

    Nice! I love seeing how other people make mashups :D Everyone has their own unique way, I should do one of these one day lol. Also, I would recommend setting the quality of the reverb to high instead of eco :)

      You should! I'll keep the reverb thing in mind the next mashup I make, thanks :)

    I have just a quick question regarding mastering the tracks, should I worry about the giant red bars in the masting tab when both songs are playing? As long as I individually edit them both will this be resolved?

    • @InanimateMashups
      @InanimateMashups  5 лет назад

      That just means that your track is peaking - honestly that's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means the track is kind of 'hitting the ceiling' of how loud the sound is at that point. I usually don't worry about it - if I'm happy with the sound of the mix I just ignore it and export.

      You can use a limiter to help keep those peaks down. Also using subtractive EQ to cut unnecessary frequencies is absolutely essential

    Wait so im confused with the whole key thing. For the song im mashing up is in the key of Em. Whenever it says eg F#m or Bm on a certain website, how do we know if it's a major or minor? Because it just says Em instead of it saying E minor or E major. Hope you reply! ♥️

    • @InanimateMashups
      @InanimateMashups  5 лет назад +2

      Generally if I song doesn't have an 'm' marking it it's in major, the 'm' indicates that it's in minor, that's just the shorthand used - e.g. 'F' is F major, but 'Fm' would be F minor. Hope that helps :)
