  • Street Fighter is one of the top fighting game franchises of all time. It's a household name with name recognition most other video game series' would love to have. So, why is the fifth iteration of this beloved franchise so controversial? I take a look at how Capcom turned Street Fighter V from Dud to Stud.

TLDR summary for my wall of text: The FGC has allowed Capcom to take it for granted since Street Fighter is considered by many to be the "only" 2D fighting game in existence.
IMO the true tragedy of SFV is it shows how the FGC has allowed Capcom to take it for granted. Think about it. They specifically and deliberately nerfed core aspects of Street Fighter play in this game. Aspects that have been part of Street Fighter for over 20 years were gutted in this title. They deliberately gutted footsies with stubby normals, they deliberately gutted projectile zoning with all the fireball invincible moves and they deliberately gutted solid neutral by placing an emphasis on the crush counter mechanic.
They did all of this for the sole purpose of making the game more accessible for E-Sports. That alone should have caused all of the "keep it real and keep it hardcore" fighting game players to leave. However, not only did we tolerate this (which is something we should never have done) but we defend their decisions to the death under the guise of "adapting" instead of seeking out other fighting games to play.
There are amazing fighting games out there worth your time that have all that SFV lacks but the FGC is so blinded by a "Street Fighter only" mentality that those games are ignored.
In any other genre if you only engaged in ONE aspect of that genre you could not be considered "serious". You can't call yourself a "serious" fan of anime if you only have ever watched one anime your whole life. IMO you can't call yourself a serious FPS player if you have only ever played Halo. Why then can you call yourself a "serious" fighting game player if the only FG you have have EVER played is Street Fighter?
The FGC has allowed Capcom to take it for granted by continuing to staunchly support a sub par fighting game at the expense of all others. This game has not gone from Chump to Champ. It has gone from Dismal Chump to just Chump.
It is still a sub par fighting game in terms of mechanics and gameplay, yet we still support it without question.
The best way to cause Capcom to up their game is for the FGC to realize that the entire genre does not live and die by a single fighting game.
The FGC is more than Street Fighter. The day we realize that is the day we as a community truly start to grow and the day Capcom is forced to get its act together.

    • @Thalanox
      @Thalanox 4 года назад +8

It's also worth noting that every time Capcom majorly screws up a SF game, several other great fighting game franchises end up getting some of the attention they deserve. When Capcom fails, the whole fighting game ecosystem benefits. Except for the people who refuse to touch any game other than SF, of course.

tbh i’ve noticed this especially with SamSho. i’m pretty new to the 2d fgc (played smash semi-competitively and have immense respect for the entire community), and i realized that no matter how solid a game can be designed (like SamSho), the community sticks with what they know. just look at the evo numbers. sf and smash are at the top because of their legacy, and tekken is probably the more popular 3d fighter. if you’re not top in the class, you’re basically a dropout, and that’s a problem in the fgc

    • @CHEESENSPIEL
      @CHEESENSPIEL 4 года назад +4

This entire comment reeks of elitism. The "keep it real and keep it hardcore" mentality is so backwards. I 100% agree that the FGC is so much more than SF, because fighting games as a genre have never been doing better and we have so many high quality titles to pick from, but your entire argument here is "SF is bad so we should have all boycotted it and played other, more DESERVING titles". You act like everyone hates the game and reluctantly supports it just because it's SF, when you're actually just projecting your opinion over the entire FGC because you think you're an "OG". It's fine to not like the game, just don't act like your opinion is the only one.
also, plz define "sub par fighting game" in terms of SF5. Footsies are alive and well, zoning is still a thing (just harder to be effective with), neutral is all present and correct. From how people describe it you'd think the game was actually in trouble or something. But I guess it's a lot easier to jump on the "SF5 bad" bandwagon.

As a new player to Street Fighter, I do, admittedly scrubby, like that the entry and gameplay feels more welcoming to newer players. Then I played Third Strike and I see why V gets shit on. I don’t hate it to that degree, I still enjoy the game for what it is, but I wish the was like you said, more depth so that refining skill and learning felt more rewarding.
Hitting a Daigo parry on Third Strike is so much more pride fulfilling when you get it than tapping a button on V. I hope SF6 can have a happy medium.

I understand the case for the netcode and arguably also the game's balance, but since when has simplifying gameplay been bad? Granted, it's bad if done completely wrong, but I've seen firsthand how some people that got lost in SFIV's mechanics suddenly understood the core of SF with SFV. That was always the goal and I think they achieved it well. My only real complaint was that the neutral game isn't as good as it used to be in SFIII & SFIV, but that's merely a minor issue of mine.

It's interesting that Capcom decided to launch a AAA game that, on the surface, catered to the hardcore FGC with essentially just Versus/Online & training mode, basically the only stuff we need in fighting games past week 1 of goofing around the menu to unlock stuff. In most cases, I'd be applauding companies for actively catering to the hardcore instead of fluffing up their franchises with handholding & time-wasters at the expense of depth, etc. But SFV didn't really do much to prove that Capcom went more in-depth for the tournament crowd, it just seemed like they subtracted efforts compared to every other fighting game package (which already suck aside from smash & soul-caliber). Just because they didn't put efforts into casual modes doesn't mean they worked extra hard on refining the gameplay as we'd have hoped. Going from USFIV to launch SFV just felt like a downgrade in nearly every way, from the roster size to the UI facepalms (rematch?) to the lack of single-player distractions. But hey, record number of entrants at Evo 2016 at least!
Luckily SFV:AE should leave its competitive legacy in a good light, like 3rd Strike did for SF3. But it goes to show how important first impressions are in gaming.

I'll have to agree with you. I do think SF5 is one of the most important titles for Capcom. Not necessarily because of any mechanic but because of the lessons Capcom learned from it. SF5 was hitting it out of the park with previews but that launch...how anemic the game was with content, not to mention how Capcom is likely going to pursue future fighting games with constant updates and online/live services as opposed to just releasing a bunch of different versions (like SF4 did with Super, Arcade and Ultra). I've done the maths.
5 frames a second is about 83.3333333333 milliseconds. To put that into perspective, general consensus on human perception is that the brain takes about 80 milliseconds to process sensory information. While there's more work to be done and certainly variables, it's a good rule to have.
From this, a 5 frame second delay should have a negligible effect on human performance in a video game. They've actually even done studies on when input delay starts to mess up players, and 80 was the minimum that people notice nothing. Anything above that is when minor issues begin.

My issues I have with SFV are many: the hitboxes are exceptionally wonky, Especially with Cammy's crouching MK. V-Triggers are usually worthless since they were put out there as the Alpha Counter and these usually fail miserably as get off me tools. And then Arcade Edition destroyed gaining FM. I tried to like this game but, I have KOF, GG, Tekken, and now Dragonball and SC6 to play as functional and fun games. The changes they also made in Season 2 really turned me off with the DP nerf.

As someone in my mid 30's it's funny seeing the reactions to all of the street fighter games.
Players today: "SFV is the worst fighting game of all time, it's so slow and boring to watch and brain dead to play. There's no variety in play style, and V-triggers are a broken comeback mechanic that rewards losing. SFIV was so much better, it had tough links, advanced tech, and combo variety that gave unique play styles"
Players 6 years ago: "SFIV is the worst fighting game of all time, it's so slow and boring to watch and brain dead to play. First it was dp fadc ultra bullshit, now it's vortex 50/50 bullshit, and ultras are a broken comeback mechanic that rewards losing. Every iteration having its own OP as fuck characters like Vanilla Sagat and AE Yun . I miss the old days, 3S and ST were so much better, the gameplay was so fast. In 3S parrying made all characters viable if you got gud, the characters were so original, and it had the best pixel art of all time, and ST was for the hardcore players only none of this pussy comeback shit"
Players 19 years ago(3S): "crickets chirping..." good luck finding 3S in any arcade, and any players who gave even half a shit about it when it came out. Fast forward a few years after launch when the 200 people who played it got together on the interwebs to discus: "Ken/Yun/Chun-li are stupid OP bullshit." - I'm sure there was more, but that's literally all I can remember hearing about 3S when its niche ass was relevant.
Players 21 years ago(SFIII): "SFIII is so fucking stupid, who gives a shit about these characters. Why even call it Street Fighter at all it's so different. Parrying is stupid and hard to do, and cheap to play against. SFII was so much better, I miss *insert nearly and household street fighter character's name*. Fuck this I'll play Darkstalkers instead(which... fair)
Players 23 years ago: "Alpha is too similar to SFII, but it's fine... I guess" - Alpha 2 is fondly remembered now, but at the time I can't really remember anyone being too hyped for it even if it was generally positively received. OG Raging demon was dope though.
Players 24 years ago: "ST is so old looking, why wold you still be making the same shit? Just let SFII die already!"
Obviously I'm cutting countless complaints about nearly all of these titles or else I'd be here typing this the rest of my life. This is just a friendly reminder that while everyone seems to have rose colored glasses for landmark previous versions of SF(ST, Alpha2, 3S, SFIV Ultra), at the time of their releases most people seemed to either hate them or flat out didn't give enough of a shit to have an opinion in the first place.
I love this series... but every entry has had it rough spots, just as ever entry has is bright spots. I look forward to all the love SFV will recieve when SFVI comes out.
"bullshit, there's no fucking way anyone will ever look back fondly at this piece of shit game" - SFIV players

Too bad some actually believe this is how it happened. I've been around the entire time. The rest of the games barely heard complaints, in comparison to 5. No SF game ever had actual backlash like 5 does and still does. 4th season and ppl still all it the worst numbered SF of all time.
This is just some BS spin some kids try and lie to themselves, with.
SF5 is a scrub-fest for those that can't play actual SF. No, ppl didn't hate the prior games any more than they do now. Meanwhile, SF5 has been hated, even by its own players, since day one. It's SF:For Retards and was created for less-than-honest outcomes.

It received criticism by the 3-crowd as well as, myself, for changes like allowing dps to be mashable(as usual, there were complaints about the lower skill=scrubby things...with SF5, that IS the entire game). USF4 STILL isn't hated so, that kind of makes your lie obvious. The majority of this comment section STILL prefers USF4. You could have read the page before lying, again. Also, just follow the numbers. USF4 was STILL growing in it's 8th year, meanwhile SF5's entrants decreased by 50% in only its 3rd YEAR AFTER the AE release.
I don't need to call you anything. You are, however, a liar who has fooled himself, apparently. To THIS DAY SF5 enjoys a far worse reputation than ANY numbered SF title to date.
I've literally been around from the beginning and I can prove it. I'm literally at the ground floor of the FGC. You can try and re-write history but, I'll put it straight. Ya know...since I was there, along with thousands of friends.
If you need to lie to shill...and you're not getting paid... you should pick another game. All the shills and liars from the first year have already admitted the truth, for the most part(and to me, personally, even). You're among the last left which tells me that you've actually been completely duped and believe the spin-bs you're repeating. lol

Day one release, you get a half made game then the game company releases patches and DLC etc exploiting the customers for extra money until the game's life span is done. Luckily SFV has got better in the process unlike others. But it still sucks that you have to wait years in some cases for game to mature like a fine wine, so it can be at it's best.

Street Fighter has been the series that put Capcom on the map and it's their most important fighting game series too. Actually it's not just THEIR most important fighting game series, but THE most important fighting game series in general. This series is responsible for both making the genre popular in the first place (with Street Fighter II) and also for reviving at a time when it seemed that the genre was dying (with Street Fighter IV). Free stuff with a currency is a game ruining thing. Content ends up being locked behind horrible modes you don’t want to play in order to convince you to spend money, and those real money options are more expensive and more abundant. It’s a mess and it should have just been paid and not a service game.
And the loot boxes are NOT good. They lock away costumes to people who complete daily missions etc aka partaking in the games a service mechanic.
