    Wow this really works! My inch-long tropical fish was starting to float and really struggling, so I was desperate. I tried peas (none of my fish would eat them - spit them out) and epsom salt bath. Called my exotics vet - they didn’t do fish. Referred me to a fish vet - he was out of town for a month. I had seen videos of deep sea fishermen doing this all the time; they even have a tool for it!) So, I thought, why not, I really have no other choice and I didn’t want to just watch him starve to death. Went all over for clove oil - only Walgreens stocked it. Asked my cat’s vet for a syringe w/a tiny needle (told him why - he gave me 2!). Since my fish was so much smaller, I started with one drop of clove oil per gallon, and added an additional drop until I started to see if it was working. I got to 4 drops then transferred some of the solution to a smaller bowl. I used just enough so the fish would not struggle when I picked him up (he wasn’t out completely) I used a flashlight to see the bubble and when I pierced it with the needle, you could almost hear it pop. I then pulled back on the syringe to suck the air out. I had to do it a second time in a slightly diff spot. It bled a tiny bit, but stopped pretty quickly. I had him in recovery for just a minute or two, then decided the tank was the best place for him to reduce stress. It’s been over a month now and he’s happily swimming with his other 3 buddies in his 20 gallon tank and totally back to normal.

    I wish I saw this video sooner! I had some goldfish that died from Swim Bladder Disease and if I had known there was a way I could save them by doing this relatively simple operation, I would have at least tried... Feeding them peas did not really help prevent SBD either, or maybe it did for a little while. My oldest one was 3 years old. Hopefully now I can save my goldfish if it happens again... I have 4 small goldfish in a 50 gallon planted tank now but since I moved the tank outdoors I've not encountered any swim bladder problems with them and they have been growing well.. and poo-ing a lot of greens! I think algae really helps with their digestion. I used to feed my goldfish twice a day when the tank was indoors since they had no other source of food. But now since they eat a lot of algae (and maybe even some worms/insects) all day I only feed them once every other day now.
    I have rambled quite a bit, but TL;DR, I enjoyed the video, thank you for sharing!

    To everyone saying he needs a bigger tank.... Don't you think it is kind of obvious? After 100 comments "Get a bigger tank" I think he understands. Dazwah thanks for documenting this, I feel a little more confident operating on my fish now. My only question is how long did it take for the fish to gain conciousnes after being sedated?

    • @dazwahmogwai1772

      Aaron - OmgHazey cheers Aaron. Flipper was swimming again within 5-10 mins of being back in tank. I gently held him just under the surface below the filter water return for a couple of minutes to make sure he had plenty of water running over his gills. Then when he was ready he kicked away out of my hand. His buoyancy improved back to normal over the next week 👍🏽

  • @hajjdawood
    @hajjdawood 7 лет назад +74

    I had an angelfish that also got super bloated till his fins got pushed into his eye. I tried everything. Peas, anti-biotics, anti-fungal, salt, etc. Nothing worked.
    Finally I got desperate I bought a syringe, and without anesthia I went ahead. Pulled out about 5 ml of air, which is insane given he is just a juvenile. Almost right away you could see how skinny he got (hasn't eaten in 10 days). He didn't freak out or even react at all (I obscured his face with the net so he doesn't see the needle lol).
    He is also sinking a bit (not as extreme) but has started to regain the use of his fins. I dropped some food in there before the next water change (so I can throw out any uneaten food). In the hospital tank I put broad spectrum antibiotics (to prevent infection) and aloe vera to help heal his skin and scales.
    Ill let you all know how it goes in the week to come

  • @suitedzombie9846

    He probably has a Swim Bladder disorder because of bad water quality. There are 3 or 4 Fancy Goldfish in what looks like a 5 gallon bowfront tank, and as we all know the rule is 20 gallons for the first and 10-15 gallons for each extra. This means you must have a minimum of 40-50 gallons for 3 fish, or a minimum of 50-65 gallons for 4 fish. What would be even better is an indoor mini pond for the fish. Use water testing strips to determine the quality of the aquarium water, and chemicals to help maintain it. In such a small tank, you must do a 50-90% water change every 1-2 days to keep the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates in check. I would also recommend keeping live plants in the tank to help maintain the ammonia levels by turning the ammonia into Nitrates, as well as add some essential oxygen into the tank. Feed them high-quality pelleted food such as Omega One Medium Pellets as well as fresh veggies every few days. Frozen shelled peas help decrease the risk of swim-bladder disorders, Spinach promotes healthy, strong scales, Garlic Cloves prevent Ich and other parasites, etc. These healthy foods are beneficial to your fish to keep them healthy and happy. Do not feed any high-protein treats such as Bloodworms or Brine Shrimp, as this will increase the ammonia in that tiny tank of yours. Goldfish also must have sufficient surface movement on top of the tank water to increase oxygen levels in the tank. With so many large fish in a tiny tank, ammonia and nitrate levels will be high, as well as high-stress and low oxygen levels. With this high-stress, the loss of slime coat is inevitable and will attract diseases, therefore I would use Stress Coat instead of any other water conditioner to help with stress and disease prevention from adding an artificial slime coat. I would also use Fluval Biological Enhancer to add beneficial bacteria into the aquarium to help with ammonia levels. Like with all pets, please make sure to do plenty of research before investing in any pet. For example, I did 3 years of research before adopting my first Rats. If you take great care of these fish, they will be with you for a long time. Good luck!

  • @reigngo7251
    @reigngo7251 5 лет назад +1

    its true that this tank isn't big enough for an adult gold fish but it is for one or two (three maximum ) small goldfish (1-4 months) as long as you do a sufficient amount of water changes to get rid of the growth inhibiting hormone (GIH for short ) so that's why goldfish tend to grow larger in bigger tanks because the large water volume dilutes this hormone , the water volume doesn't directly influence on the health of you're goldfish but the quality of you're water does, and that's why most beginners with smaller fish tanks (5-10 gallons) tend to have their fish die rather quickly because most of them don't have time or don't have much experience to understand the proper care for "fancy goldfish' because most people say they are beginner fish so most people tend to think that they are low maintenance fish with in reality their not.

    For those with stocking knowledge, just need a little help please. I've got a 190L tank with 6 small Orandas in. I'm using the rule of 1" of fish per 4.55 litres of water. Without fins/tails, I've taken that my Orandas will grow to 6" long. Working out the maths, my tank is 97% stocked. (Note, I've taken 10% off my water volume to allow for gravel and decorations = 171L). Thoughts?

      DENNIS_KAP We all know it's probably too small but it really depends on the size of the goldfish I used to use bowls for mine but they are in a kitty pool pond outside and they are happy in there usually in fish keeping most keepers start out with bowls then move up the chain so it's okay of thry are in a tank like that for now but it will change they are fairly new to fish keeping and you learn more the longer you're in the hobby.

      And no, it doesn’t depend on the size. Well.. one baby comet gets 29 gallons of water. Each added goldfish of the same species gets 10 gallons of water.
      Fancy goldfish- 44 gallons of water for the first one, 10 gallons more for each added fish of the same species.
      Koi? Need a bigger pond that 1200 gallons.
