    If only I could find a vet like you in the UK. :/ No one will touch fish here, their all about the fluffy animals, and pet stores only care about a quick sale. :(

      +Annabella Laws You'll usually find the places that sell expensive koi will either be knowledgeable enough to help you or or have a number for a vet who treats fish nearby.
      I'm lucky enough to have a Cascade koi store that treats fish themselves, give you free advice, test water for free and do a scale scrape for free too.

    My oranda slept upside down, I nearly freaked out. I own him for several years , never happened before. I put some medication in the tank from easy life , and changed the diet. After one day he is back to normal. I am sure that he started feeding on Koy floating food, so I started a diet of sinking pellets for all fish.
    I am a fish keeper for over thirty years now. Most of my fish break longevity records, always clean water NO2 level zero, Cl level zero, NO3 close to zero, aqu. salt in the goldfish tank, bettas, guppies and gouramis.
    I still have my first goldfish, alive and kicking.
    Love the way you respect your patients, great video, love it.

    Rather than buying fancy goldfish I save the ones meant to be feeder fish. One grew to be about 9" & had the most beautiful split fan tail. It was about 15 yrs old when it passed. It's buried next to another pet. What is used to anesthetize a goldfish? My poor fish is stuck with his tail fin next to his face. It seems like it started off as a buoyancy issue. Then I noticed him on the bottom. I kept thinking it was dead, only to have it move when I tried to remove it from the water. I have it in a net attached to the side of the tank. To keep it safe from the other fish & make sure it gets some food. Will fixing the buoyancy issue allow the fish to straighten back out in most cases? I didn't know there were vets specialized in fish. That so awesome. It makes sense considering how expensive some are. Plus those of us that love their fish like any other pet.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  8 лет назад +15

      you may be surprised that it's not the expensive fish that I see most commonly. to answer tour questions, fish tend not to straighten out if chronic because of fibrosis and bony growths. There are many anaesthetics available, the ones sold in aquarium stores likely contain 2-phenoxyethanol.

    Although we know she is not completely out of the woods yet, it appears that our very bloated pond goldfish (whose symptoms included bloated, scales sticking out/ protruding (pine cone effect), bulging eyes, black smudges on her fins and tail, stringy white poop, isolating from other fish) is on her way to a full recovery. We purchased a 10 gallon fish tank, filled it with the pond water, warmed it to 78 degrees, then added 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt (to decrease bloating)-- everything I read said to only use "epsom" b/c other types of salts could cause her to retain even more fluid, plus 1 teaspoon of melafix (to heal black smudges/areas)........then added a combo of kanaplex and metroplex to the water (to treat either the bacterial infection or parasites that may be causing her illness)...once the water was all ready for her, we transferred her carefully from the pond to the tank. Over the next 7 days, she got better each day. We saw a huge decrease in the bloating by the 2nd day. We didn't feed her for the 1st 2 days to be safe until some of the bloating went away, but then started giving her a few pre-soaked food pellets each day (and a shelled pea here and there). We also checked the water several times a day to be sure it was clean and safe (testing for ammonia, nitrates, ph, etc). After one week, all symptoms are gone! She is back in the pond with her friends looking fantastic! Her scales went down, she is no longer bloated and her poop is back to looking normal. We are hopeful the kidneys repaired themselves and all is well .

    What if your fish is sinking rather than floating? I've dosed with metronidazole (in the water as it won't eat). It is an oscar and can swim up from the bottom but it strains to do so and rapidly sinks. This has been ongoing for 3 weeks.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  4 года назад +1

      One of my colleagues, Dr Sanders, pioneered surgical attachment of an external buoyancy device for goldfish as a temporary measure, until the fish rights itself. In oscars, the "sinking" may be due to a different reason, and so an aspirate of the swimbladder to see if there's infection may be necessary. You know, one of my goldfish recently was somewhat ``kinked'' in the body, swimming upside down, sideways, corkscrewing and not able to steer himself at all. (He didn't seem to be bloated much or manifest any other physical problems.) I squirted a couple capsules of fish oil into his mouth over 48 hours, he pooped, and started swimming better.

    • @quickchris10
      @quickchris10 7 лет назад

      I did the fish-oil feeding (cut open a capsule of our human-sized capsules) once before with a goldfish who was choking on a cory catfish he ate. (I know -- my mistake putting a little catfish in with a big goldfish.) But I did extract the catfish from my goldfish (named Mystique) but then the goldfish still had a dislocated jaw, so couldn't suction or eat, so I gave him the fish oil and sort of pinched his mouth shut to try to relocate the jaw. He got better, and the blood cells that had engorged his jaw got reabsorbed. Maybe the fish oil is just a placebo for me; I don't know if they would have recovered anyway. I just catch them with my hand and hold them with their lips just above water surface and squirt some fish oil in their mouth.

    I had a large goldfish that had a swollen abdomen on its left side and possibly been attacked by a Herron as had an opening on its topsides and grazed down its right side. I found it lying on its side in the pond.
    I followed the fish doctors instructions by separating it from the other fish, treating it for constipation and massaging its stomach. I also had it it into an Epson Salt bath for 5 mins daily. I had some anti bacterial solution that I added to the water which was changed morning and night with the pond water.
    After one week, the fish wouldn’t eat and was still lying on its side I put it back in the pond as I was going away for a few days. I left instructions for my friend to remove it once it had died because it just lay in the bottom of the pond, he was looking after my fish while I was away. Upon my return I found it swimming and eating happily with the others.
    Thank you so much for this information, it obviously worked eventually and it’s sores have healed well.

    Can this swim bladder issue come back and if so how often? There is a fish tank at my favorite Chinese restaurant & they have big goldfish. Two of them are constantly laying on their sides at the bottom of the tank. Every time I go in I see them laying there which is heartbreaking to me. I truly am worried about them. Is swim bladder painful for the fish? I would imagine it would be horrible for them. The owners of the restaurant said the fish were fine & chose to lay this way because they like it which is absolutely ridiculous. I had NO idea that swim bladder was even a thing as I don't know much about fish. My goal is to find information & help these poor goldfish who appear to be suffering. I am going to let them know that swim bladder is most likely the cause & to get them treated asap. Thanks so much for this video.

      I had this happen to my Ryukin gold fish. It was literally upside down. According to RUclips videos, it was bloated. I couldn't find myself performing surgery. I recall giving my kids camomile tea when they were bloated as babies. I had my fish 3 years and it's huge. He was dieing on me. I used 2 tea bags a cup of tea. Added to a gallon of water. Kept the fish in there for about 20 min. Put him in his tank watched him for about 20 min. It was working he flipped right side up. I put him another 10 min in tea water. Back into tank . He's been good ever since. I drink camomile tea when I get gassy. It don't hurt to try when you've run out of options. For me that was my only option.

      Straight into fresh pond water, but sometimes you may need to flush the gills. For a complete video on anaesthesia, watch ruclips.net/video/_Kz_NnZPXgU/видео.html

      You'll need to drain it, and get culture and sensitivity done to guide the antibiotics choice.

    Thank you Dr. Loh for the informative videos. Isn't it only the anterior swim bladder in line with the spine and the caudal sb drops down at an angle? How bad is it if you miss the swim bladder and are antibiotics needed after surgery?

    Is it possible that it can die if the needle ends up puncturing something else?

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  4 года назад +1

      One of the biggest danger is septicaemia as the needle can draw bacteria into the point of insertion. A trained veterinarian with aseptic technique is can perform this procedure.

    • @Irisedpig
      @Irisedpig 5 лет назад +1

      Lola Moon I'm sorry for your loss ... it might make you feel better to know that swimbladder issues don't kill a fish, but they can be caused by an infection (amongst other things like constipation and body shape). So I would think that your fish had an internal infection when yougot it and that was what killed them. Not your fault.

      my fish had both problems but the floating upside down was cured with feeding the fish peas with out the skin for 3 days and the fish is swimming fine now and I notice anytime i changed the water the fish would gasp for air and was like that for a while so what I do now i started saving water in a gallon and when i change the water I poor new water in the gallon till the next change and have not seen the fish gasp for air again the chlorine is not good for the fish I have had my gold fish like 2 and a half years

    I did this on my goldfish and I believe I got his intestens, what are his odds of survival. I used a light box to find the spot that let less light through. And when I tried to pull air out the shiringe and when I stopped trying to get air out the shiringe recompresed. Also he is rises very quickly, 3-5x of the fish in the video.
