Thank you for an informative straight forward video without long boring intros with bad music like I have seen and can't get past 25 seconds. Well done and you will get even better if you choose to do more.
Okay, I'm a little late to the party, but I have to say THANK YOU for this video. I just started sublimating mugs a couple of months ago and I've seen so many How-To videos but no one seems to have the issue that I've had with the shadowy-ghosting - and it seems to happen mostly with my darker prints. I'm going to try the print settings you've suggested. Thanks! And thanks for the template too, I've been trying to find one (and make one) that wraps closer to the handles, yours is perfect.
Mugs are actually much easier to do than shirts, once you get your time/temp/pressure dialed in for your press. Sometimes that takes some tweaking from variations in different models. But it’s totally worth trying! You can make mugs yourself cheaper than a POD service can.
Just found your video I love learning even though I might think I did it ok always worth watching what others suggest.. I love your videos you dont side step you tell it like it is and I love the honesty.
Great video... I watched a JDS mug video and they said to put a blank mug in the mug press while it is heating up, they also said to press the mug at 400° for 5-7 minutes so I put the blank muy in the press and set the timer for 5 minutes to pre-heat the press. Anyway, after removing the blank 11 oz mug it looks a little yellowish, not as bright white as when I put it in the press. Do you think that discoloration was caused by being in the press for 5 minutes? I noticed you do your mugs for 2 minutes and 40 seconds? Thanks for any help on this.

I loved your video, thank you... I know you use sublimation paper but have you ever done them with heat transfer sheets, just wondering if they are any good on ceramic mugs!
Hello. I have your template in my Library of the Silhouette Studio Business Edition and also have chosen your Autism Eye illustration for an 11oz mug. However, everything is extremely simple to do on this template, which I think is far by the easiest to use, apart from one thing. When I go in and transfer over the image from my Dropbox, it always comes up with the loading bar, and it always seems to slow my Silhouette Studio down, meaning I cannot ever seem to resize the image to fit onto the template, as my Silhouette Studio comes up with the circle which goes round and round, then it crashes. I know the press windows and R and that solution, however, it never seems to work. When I drag the image over from my dropbox it always feels as though it is on elastic which only stretches so far. I feel it should not be going through all this process, and feel as though there is something I am doing wrong, but cannot think what it is. I use the Microsoft Edge browser. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi there! Just curious what happened when you were taking off the paper right away? How was it messing up the mugs? I am still refining my process. Thank you! This vid helped get me started :)
I was getting ghosting, which is basically a shadow of the design on the mug. If the mugs is still super hot when you pull off the paper, sometimes it can cause the ink to keep gassing. You have to pull the paper off fast, or let the mug cool down, to help avoid that.

Great video.. Maybe I missed it. Does your temp drop once you place the mug and if so, do you add more time to allow temp to get back to 400? Mine drops to like 325 or so. And take 1 min to get back to temp
Girly Tomboy Chicks Designs it drops a little but I don’t think I’ve noticed it drop that far. If you’re really careful and don’t pull off all the tape you can peel the paper up and check it. We had to waste some mugs while we were getting the time right. We started at 2 mins and worked up in 10 second intervals until it looked perfect, so you might have to do a little tweaking to the times if you’re press drops that much.
I don’t have a second favorite. It’s not good to be switching your ink brands around without buying a new set of cartridges and starting over, so I have stuck with Cosmos Ink. they usually get more in quickly when they do sell out. He doesn’t have nearly as many stock issues as he first did when he started out.
Having some trouble with the heat reaching the edges of my design..both the bottom/top and near the handles. Any ideas on what I can do differently? using 385 degrees for 165 seconds on my machine.
Kristin Harris it is always going to be harder when you get closer to the base and handle. The ceramic is thicker there so it takes longer to get it heated up. I know some people stick the base of the mug in the press to preheat it a little before putting the whole thing in there but I didn’t see much improvement doing that. I just kept playing with my time and temp. Once I did it longer and a little hotter the edges turned out better. You can sacrifice a mug and put a smaller design (probably a tall design for what you’re wanting to test so it gets close to the base as well as the center, but can fit several tests on the mug) multiple times. The design will get ruined the more you press but you only need to pay attention to the test you’re doing at that time. See if it gets any better with a little hotter or longer, or both.
@@DebbieDoesDesign Great idea! I'm also going to measure out how far towards the handle I can do and get more systematized with it. I've been wasting a lot of mugs. It appears the left side of my mug press is able to get a more solid impression further than the opposite side, so time to test different temps and what not like you suggested. TY!
Dawne Caldwell every brand varies, but the ones I use are dishwasher safe. I run them through all the time without issues. I do recommend not to use a super high heat wash (sanitary setting on some dishwashers) just in case it gets hot enough to reactivate the ink though.

Laurie Caron the regular ink comes with the printer. You don’t need it for anything but the initial setup, but if you bought a used printer and don’t have the regular ink you can go straight to the sublimation ink. It won’t hurt anything.
I create my designs using Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. As long as you don’t have a background behind it, and then save it as a PNG file, the exported image will have a transparent background.
I create all my designs in either Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. This particular design was drawn in Photoshop and then I added the text in Illustrator.

Atr the stickers you put on the bottom some kind of waterproof metallic?
brad shirley no they aren’t waterproof or metallic. They are just regular paper stickers.
Hi , did you let the mug press get back up to temperature before you started the timer ?
No. I did my testing based on the moment I closed the press.
Do you need the ink kit and the sublimation ink if you want to use it just for sublimation
Laurie Caron the regular ink comes with the printer. You don’t need it for anything but the initial setup, but if you bought a used printer and don’t have the regular ink you can go straight to the sublimation ink. It won’t hurt anything.
What program do you use so there is no background?
I create my designs using Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. As long as you don’t have a background behind it, and then save it as a PNG file, the exported image will have a transparent background.
I would like to know what is the name of the paper to use in ceramics
I use A-Sub paper for everything.
I would love your template. I use size 15oz mugs.
