Santa Maria Army Airfield; A sentimental journey Pt. 5 "The Rocketeer"

The movie "The Rocketeer," and portions of the 1957 Billy Wilder classic "The Spirit of St. Louis," starring Jimmy Stewart, were filmed here, and at the Hancock Foundation College of Aeronautics, a local flight school established in1928. The school was contracted by the U.S. Army Air Corp to train pilots from 1940 to 1944. Today, it is the site of the Allan Hancock Community College. The flight sequences for the World War II film, "The 1000 Plane Raid" starring Christopher George, were also filmed here in 1969.
