  • Flying the Ryan NYP around the pattern at Santa Maria Municipal Airport in California, where I earned my PPL in 1977. Loading the airplane with only 150 gallons of fuel, and staying well below the max gross weight of 5250 lbs., the Spirit is particularly unstable around all axes, making it difficult to fly with even a modicum of precision. Charles Lindbergh was clearly an exceptional and determined pilot!

It's a crappy flyer as an airplane. Not for your average joe. As we all know from a design standpoint & from history, Ryan Aircraft designer Donald Hall didn't have time to redesign the horizontal & vertical tail surfaces. They kept the same surfaces as used with the Ryan M1 and were undersized for the much larger SOSL. Thus, it provided for a lot less instability in flight, to say the least.
