This is an awesome song. Did you know that this song actually evolved from the dmb song "Hold Me Down"? This isn't even the first time Dave has done this. Sattelite originiated from "After Her" and Dont Drink The Water origniated from "weight of the world". here is the original song: ruclips.net/video/CJ1azqmPsYc/видео.html
This song is brilliant. It feels simple, but its also so unique and hits emotional chords that are otherwise left untouched. In general, that's the beauty of music -- it reaches spots that, sometimes, we didn't even know existed.
Would have been the best song on the album. Artists tend to overthink themselves into making bad decisions. Its one of the best songs he ever wrote and a thousand times more than anything they are writing now.
Not true at all… it’s a great song, but not close to the best songs he’s ever written. The Stone, 41, You Never Know, common lol. Cigarette lit is mid tier, like Crazy Easy for example.
@KeziaHorn12 Ha, well, as a smoker, I read the lyrics pretty straight forward. So perhaps it is simply a literal take on how obnoxious it is to have continue to be a smoker. "always out always in" - the act of smoking "silverline" smoke cloud and "rain", well, cigarettes are for some reason better when it is raining. Perhaps he is implying that he wants a reason to continue because it is the one time he actually enjoys the obviously bad habit of smoking Or perhaps I'm completely clueless!? :)
Unbelievable this didn't make the album. Who's decision was it to cut the song? Dave? If you go by Lillywhites word Dave makes decisions then has the label get in his head to make the decisions that they want especially in Away from the world. Dave and Steve edited songs agreed on everything then the studio changed Dave's mind and they haven't communicated since. Lillywhite wasn't happy with the new edits. Cigarette lit also might be one of Dave's best vocal performances ever and I really do mean that this song is absolutely fit for his voice his range and he sings it beautifully he absolutely nails it on the album
Thank you...I've been listening to this song and watching your take on the meaning of the words visually for years and I've not once just said, thank you...sorry for that, this is absolutely amazing work my friend...☝️💜
Hey there. This song was SUPPOSED to be released on Some Devil, but later on, Dave felt it didn't fit with the album. As far as the new album, well... who knows. It was supposed to be this last July 2007, but who knows. I imagine that they'll be in the studio these upcoming winter months and maybe we'll see something in the Spring. I got "Cigarette Lit" from the website weeklydavespeak. Also, I've posted the song on my site at jake1729[dot]com/dmb
Hey there. Actually, you can't buy the Lillywhite album... it was never released to the public. The closest CD, however, would be Busted Stuff, as many of the songs on there are 'remixed' from Lillywhite. You can download LWS from my website at jake1729[dot]com/dmb
No, Carter, nor anyone else in DMB, was on this album. Brady Blade played percussion on this album. Other performers include the following: Tim Reynolds - Guitar Trey Anastasio - Guitar, piano Tony Hall - Bass Stephen Harris - Producer, keyboards Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Horns
This has got to be my absolute favorite solo Dave song. The lyrics are so touching and speak to me deeply. Amazing- simply amazing. This is Dave Matthews at his best. Does anyone know where you can get a recording of this song?
Actually, I think it's supposed to be "Silver Line". The song is talking a lot about rain and clouds, and things getting better. A "Silver Line" of an event means that even though you see clouds, the sun is sometimes visible around the edges... aka, times will get better. But, I could be completely off... Dave isn't always the most clearly spoken vocalist.
anyone know if this eventually morphed into "An Another Thing" (or maybe vice versa...not sure which song came first)...opening chords sounds very similar.
Love this dude....but your lyrics are off a bit. One part...he says Match Stick...my plans to quit, and you wrote not say love the vid tho...and I have never felt so much emotion but from this album!
Well, it depends how old the CD player is. The newer ones do just fine with burned CDs, and even mp3 files. If you have an older CD player, burn the CD at the slowest speed possible, as this will increase compatibility.
just relax de16ej....theres a lot of songs you need to hear first if your new to dave. enjoy it and sooner than you know these songs will blow people away like every one of daves projects do Roi tear
I t hink they do sometimes....I recall listening to shows and hearing Dave say his family was there...I think at Alpine last summer, Dave dedicated Stay Or Leave to his wife - she musta been there
Yes, yes.... I'm working on fixing the website. My previous provider (PowWeb) deleted everything. Domain name is being switched to new account as I write... hopefully tomorrow. Thanks!
Yup. Just download the .WAV files and use your burning program to burn an audio CD. Nero does it, and I think Windows may be able to do it too. Does that help?
You know, he could, but if you consider the following: 1. The line before he's talking about coming and going ("not staying") 2. The line after ("my finger tip") COULD make more sense with "not stay", as in it's tapping against his leg or head perhaps. 3. Related #2, "thinking"... folks tap their fingers ("not staying") then they think. I really examine the lyrics when I make these, but I am certainly interested in hearing what you think.
ddave don't do anything with jon beckle from le bistro montage William hearst,or van Morrison this fucker is bugger,i still smoke ,I will stop, I love you loveheart singing like a angel or a jumbi tonight, I would make a snow angel in the snow if it was snowing out you make everything pure and soft and beautiful, you rock my heart, silver and yellow light glowing around your crown dave Matthews-red heart pumping-bella margaret
Yeah I know... it's unfortunate I messed that up. It sometimes hard to understand Dave's lyrics, and the lyric websites aren't always accurate. Anyway, thanks for watching.
+Nick Paternostro I don't know exactly, but Some Devil was a solo album by Dave. I would guess he just wanted a different sound. In my opinion, the percussion is much simpler on this album compared to normal DMB material, so perhaps that was by design.

Hearing Hold Me Down in the outro was soul-crushing at the time. . .knowing it'd probably never be played again.
This might be the best song I've ever heard. Seriously
It's up there.
This song is brilliant. It feels simple, but its also so unique and hits emotional chords that are otherwise left untouched. In general, that's the beauty of music -- it reaches spots that, sometimes, we didn't even know existed.
Wish this was on Some Devil! That album is so emotional and touching and I feel like this would have fit on it so well.
Such an amazing song. I am just happy he has it out here to listen to and
whatever he is conveying, it touches my soul each time I hear it.
Dave Matthews writes a song like this and is just ‘nah I’ll just never release or play this’
Would have been the best song on the album. Artists tend to overthink themselves into making bad decisions. Its one of the best songs he ever wrote and a thousand times more than anything they are writing now.

Best work ever.
I listened to this when it was posted originally... it still hits just the same nerve.
@KeziaHorn12 Ha, well, as a smoker, I read the lyrics pretty straight forward. So perhaps it is simply a literal take on how obnoxious it is to have continue to be a smoker.
"always out always in" - the act of smoking
"silverline" smoke cloud
and "rain", well, cigarettes are for some reason better when it is raining. Perhaps he is implying that he wants a reason to continue because it is the one time he actually enjoys the obviously bad habit of smoking
Or perhaps I'm completely clueless!? :)
love the outro, the whole song is good but that outro... woof
the outro sounds very much like Hold Me Down
"Woof" pretty much says it best - stunning piece of music.
Jackson Cozort you’re right, it’s Hold Me Down, the exact same riff
@@jacksoncozort2549 This song is the evolution of "Hold Me Up/Down"
Hold me down main riff for outro in raised b tuning

I dont care what anyone sais this track should have been added to some devil. The album is hands down one of dave's best.
I can think of several songs on Some Devil I would replace with this one. It's a real shame this didn't make the album.
For you're lady...A,C.M..from after birth-land.
This is back when youtube was youtube
Glad this song is still here, and people are still commenting.
Thank you...I've been listening to this song and watching your take on the meaning of the words visually for years and I've not once just said, thank you...sorry for that, this is absolutely amazing work my friend...☝️💜
Wow, thanks! That made my day. I started on Raven sometime ago, but haven't had time to finish yet. Have a good one!
@@jake1729 well then get on it...I'd love to see your perception on that lost one...
How come this can’t be found on Spotify?

I love this song but I can't really wrap my head around what itmeans. I know a lot of his songs can have several meanings. Anyone have a take on it?

Wow...I've been missing out, not knowing this song until now. Thanks so much for sharing this clip with the rest of us! Peace, Love and DMB forever!
Some Devil song all the way. Fits the vibe perfectly imo. 5/5. Thanks for uploading mate!

Good observation, makes sense to me. Btw, it’s “silver lining”.
I'm in love with this song, and Im in love with dave matthews, he is freaking sweet!!
Salute!)))
As I'm Jonesing for a joint badly...
Love, love, love this tune. Wish it would be released, or even just played.
Love how he incorporated "Hold Me Down" into the outro for this. takes me back...
Ahhh that was good!
anyone know if this eventually morphed into "An Another Thing" (or maybe vice versa...not sure which song came first)...opening chords sounds very similar.
No, Little Thing = An Another Thing. This song comes from a song called Hold Me Down.
...
Adam Cold1bru Lee. Haha...I couldn't see your comment until I posted mine!
This song wasn't released, it's not an album...
love
it should Say "Silver Light " not "line"
Love this dude....but your lyrics are off a bit. One part...he says Match Stick...my plans to quit, and you wrote not say love the vid tho...and I have never felt so much emotion but from this album!
I love this song. Amazing!
This is an unreleased song that was originally going to be on Some Devil but fell short of the cut. Should of kept it!
He either is, or was, a smoker because that's just how it feels.
the brave falls down? use common sense bro. the rain falls down.
Maybe it's a reference to soldiers, police officers, or firemen. Use common sense bro.
Well, it depends how old the CD player is. The newer ones do just fine with burned CDs, and even mp3 files. If you have an older CD player, burn the CD at the slowest speed possible, as this will increase compatibility.
why wasn't this on Some Devil?...
Because Dave is insane sometimes.
Two websites... weeklydavespeak[dot]com and antsmarching[dot]org
You can download the songs from my website at jake1729[dot]com/dmb

but on my version it is on the tracklist, but it's just a second version of stay or leave...
Good song. I got the album, but this isn't on it... well, i guess my uncle burnt it wrong...
Yup. Just download the .WAV files and use your burning program to burn an audio CD. Nero does it, and I think Windows may be able to do it too. Does that help?
wow good song! I can't believe it was cut!

I doubt it. He has 3 young children, and a wife... probably hard with the constant traveling.

The verse guitar part is exactly the same as "Little Thing" chorus, but played on the baritone and "high-b" guitars
Oh what I would give to hear a sweeet Dave and Tim of this (or full band... or full band W/ Tim!) Greedy aren't I? :)
It's 'NIGHT stick', actually. If you search the lyrics, multiple sites say it is..'night stick', not 'not stay', nor 'match stick'
Yes, I have realized this. But, such is life when you depend on other sites for the lyrics. Sorry.
@smokeball420 Man, you're right. It's always hard to get lyrics right. Glad you liked the video though!
Yes, I agree. Personally, I think it's a bit odd that he did not include it on Some Devil.
Go to my website at jake1729[dot]com/dmb to download. Enjoy!
some of the same chords as Hold Me Down...interesting, I guess they evolved Hold Me Down into this song...either way I dig it
I'm glad to say the site is back up... jake1729[dot]com/dmb
This is one of those remarkable songs that tears my heart out each time i listen, but its so gorgeous that i dont really mind. its a beautiful pain.
Not sure... burn it, and see what happens.
Only Dave can write a love song to a cigarette...LOVE this song! Like many of his, it speakes to me.
wow intro fooled me a bit...sounded like the solo/D&T intro to crush. love this song.
I love the part of the video where Dave appears on a raindrop in 1:03
by far one of my favorite songs..i meditate to this
Negative... Phoenix, AZ... nice and hot....
So damn beautiful. I never really listened to this song thoroughly before. I love it.
Yes, that is true. Live at Radio City is absolutely amazing.
after one sweet world, perhaps my favorite song by him
and yeah Jake this video you put behind the music is great.
Wow Ive never heard this song before, thanks.
I think it's silver light, cuz it rhymes with night.
by 'rain' he might just mean bad news
The opening lick was turned into too high
i love this song and i like the vid too
Can you get on Apple Music?
it says night sticks at 1:32
great video especially the effects
Magical song, nice vid as well mate:)
And I know I can and I know I will forget!
💚💫
Brady Blade on the drums.....
great video work bro
Missing This One...💔❤🎶
hold me downnn...
I loverrr this song!!
Such a great song...
Love this song and dave!!!!
I love this.
beautiful.
It's the rain falls down, not the brave
Yeah I know... it's unfortunate I messed that up. It sometimes hard to understand Dave's lyrics, and the lyric websites aren't always accurate. Anyway, thanks for watching.
Does Carter play on Some Devil?
Nope. Tony Hall.
+jake1729 I could have told a difference, but I wasn't sure. May I ask why he didn't play?
+Nick Paternostro I don't know exactly, but Some Devil was a solo album by Dave. I would guess he just wanted a different sound. In my opinion, the percussion is much simpler on this album compared to normal DMB material, so perhaps that was by design.
Tony Hall is the bassist here, Brady Blade Jr is the drummer.
