  • Howdy all!
I wanted to share my latest project for my BMW F32, but this really could work for any car you have. The key is to get the right paint, so don't use just any old enamel as it might not hold up under the conditions.
Yeah, I go through this in pretty good detail, but for those not as familiar with something like this, I want to give all the instructions and even learn from my mistakes.
This can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of your car and is really easy to do, with little cost. Just take your time, do it right and add some color to your engine bay!
    Required parts and tools:
    Rustoleum engine enamel - RED

    Rustoleum engine enamel - BLACK
    www.amazon.com...
    Rustoluem engine enamel - CLEAR
    www.amazon.com...
    Small paint brush
    Nice to have:
    Good headlamp
    www.amazon.com...
    Good lighting

Great music - Halestorm is always good for car work!

When you spray paint something, you start spraying away from the target and stop spraying away from the target in an arcing motion.
When you start and stop spraying, the head of the paint can can leave spatter and it's inconsistent.
Watch your distance and be patient . It's okay to do many thin layers.

Finished product look great. Just some tips: wash with good detergent that doesn't leave residue, after dry wipe off with denatured alcohol or prep-sol, prime with three coats of filler primer, wet sand with 800 grit, paint with long continual passed, first (tack coat) hold back 12" and lay down an light smooth coat, ten minutes later a cover coat 6-8" away, wait ten minutes and do third coat.
The pair "dusts" because it's drying in the air. Move the can closer and move a little quicker for a thin coat. You don't actually have to use engine paint. I use the paint made for the car body touch ups. A 2K paint with a catalyst works best.
If you want to smooth out the job now that it's very dry you can wash it real well and sand with 1200, 1500, 2000, 3000 and 5000 paper. Walmart and auto shops has variety packs of paper. Soak the paper in water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
    Have fun with the mods!

For once I read the comment but yes yes yes listen to him, ALWAYS start from a side of your part. keep the flow going and go through the part. So this way you'll have way more consistency and its gonna be way easier to control where you sent your paint, how much you are laying on, how thick, how quick etc. Another quick tip is yeah soapy water for the basic cleaning but before paint, use acetone to remove all the grease and road grime the parts accumulate over the years. Hell they even do this with brand new parts so you should do the same with parts that have been on a car for a while. Btw they sell plastc triggers that you attach on your rattlecan. Offers more control.

  • @RaymondChavira
    @RaymondChavira 5 лет назад +2

Generally you wanna spray from 8 - 12", not letting it dust or dry unless between coats. Ways to fix dry spray, or droplets is to wet sand with super fine sandpaper, wash the part, let it dry and clear coat it. Water sanding leaves the part dull and smooth and the clear coat will leave it shinny and smooth. You can also smooth the clear coat by water sanding and reclear coating. Parts looked great, good job.

Another tip I have is once you’re done, you can take a razor as weird as it sounds and lightly go over any letters you want back to original. It nicely and evenly takes off the paint. Once last thing is once you’re done your work and the paint is drying just cover it up, my preferred way of doing this is just by throwing a big rubber bin over top so no debris falls onto the work, it’s especially important when the paint is drying. Looks nice though man, good job

Generally with most paint it says not to use paint above or below certain temps one of the main reasons this is because of the solvents in the paint has to evaporate or release from the paint it's very important you follow the instructions for each paint and pay special attention to your paints flash time and recoat time cure time although your paint may be dry to touch does not mean it is underneath. if you don't your paint will not harden it will stay soft because you trapped the solvents under the paint softening your clear coat or topcoat.

Please… no one use this video as a guide. Painting the raised surfaces with a detail brush will look sloppy. You need to spray them with whatever color you want them to be, then 2k clear over it. Then spray whatever color you want the rest of the cover to be. Then, using a cloth stretched over a block of some sort, wipe the top coat off of the raised surfaces with a pint stripper. Remember, you’ve used 2k clear underneath, which is solvent resistant - so, the paint stripper will not remove the color you’ve applied to raised surfaces. That’ll give you the contrast you want and it will look sharp with no globs, drips, etc.

It looks great! The best thing you can do is use longer strokes and move a little quicker. Try overlapping each spray but not too much. If you really want to try getting a even coat and still use rattle cans you can pick up an attachment for the can that turnes it into a sort of spray gun. With the trigger and all.

You have got to clean the plastic after washing it with acetone and then hit it with fine sand paper before painting it. And just like so many other people are saying; always paint using long strokes, never starting or stopping while pointed at the part, and put on several LIGHT coats. A minimum of 3, but 4 would be better. You're first coat shouldn't even cover it good, but instead just look like it's been misted with the paint.

You’ve gotta work on your spray paint job, you laid it out unevenly and you shouldn’t release your finger while you’re spraying. Start by spraying off to the side of the object, and follow all the way through. Stay at a consistent speed and the same distance. Once you’re done that, change angles. Go from all sides. You should also prime it first then finish it off with a heat resistant or high temperature clear coat. Otherwise the pain will probably crack or run and it won’t look as nice

When spray painting... don't do what this guy did. You never press the plunger on the spray can to start painting in the middle of the part. You always start spraying before you do a pass over a part. Otherwise, you risk shotgun blasting paint on your part that's caused by the nozzle being clogged from dry paint, your finger accidently going in front of the nozzel while spraying, etc. Always press the plunger before you sweep over the part. At the end of your sweep, you should spray past your part then let the plunger go. Repeat as necessary.
Also, he's wrong about spraying farther away. When you spray farther away, it will cause the paint to dry mid-air before it contacts the surface that will result in a frosting/textured effect thats most noticable on a gloss paint. If your spray can sprays a lot of paint super fast, you do faster passes.
