In this video, I show you how my little brother and I ceramic coated his headers with Exhaust-Grade Ceramic Paint. The catalytic converter, that is attached to the exhaust manifold died on us, which meant something needed to be done. We could have gone with a new manifold and catalytic converter, or race car setup, cat-less headers. Guess which we went with…
So in this video, you will see how we fully cleaned, prepped, painted, and got out new headers looking great. As for the products we used, you can find everything we used in the following links.

I love how almost every comment regarding this video has NOTHING to do with the ceramic coating, but how the car sounds... SICKKKK
Internet's mean 'n unpredictable. 24/7/365 ☻
milanmastracci Stfu it sounds like a sick dog taking a shit
That's because it sounds disgusting
You numb nutzies shoulda also covered or put bolts in those sensor holes. My good pal Eddie made that mistake with the paint and had to replace an entire piece of pipe after a sensor went bad even the heat from a torch wouldn't free the sensor up... So just some advice to the good. There isn't much to comment on the paint always looks nice on something new. What is to comment on is the durability and we've found out from 40 years on the short tracks the VHT holds up better than most products but it still burns off over a few weeks months and washes. Another thing to look at is the sensor position itself sometimes when you have all the components out like that on a work bench it's a good idea to look at the position of the sensors and move the location as minimal as possible so you can get a wrench or the special socket on the sensor. This can only be done when the parts are out on the work table as such. We've saved ourselves tons of grief ever since Eddies fuck up with that sensor one of the problems you will encounter with a sensor is that sometimes just the position you are working in with the wrench can ad a counter force against getting the sensors out or getting a torch on it without setting your car or fuel lines ablaze . We've had it happen where the counter force is what prevented us from removing the O-2 sensor and like magic when the position is changed it's much easier service work later on in the vehicles life. Around here we get fairly decent good quality gasoline but I can't say that at my other home in Texas the gas is often tainted and not the octane it should it be. It seems the suppliers like to ship alot of their screwed up and misblended blends to warm weather places because it burns regardless but it also kills O-2 sensors like ya can't believe... Nice video though....
Nobody is bothering to comment on the coating because VHT paints are all crap, they always flake off after a few months no matter how well you prepare the metal.
The sound of that exhaust reminds me why I love the sound of good old American muscle cars and the V-8....
I got a 496 and go through the same thing as these guys. The stamping on the bolt isnt right. People are just azzholes.
No joke
Amen
VHT will peel off, use Rustoleum high heat, it is rated for less heat, but wont flake off. Or you can use POR-15 with a brush, then when it is applied and still wet, brush some paint thinner over it to get rid of the brush strokes. They make flat black, gloss black, and silver.
Rustoleum alone? No primer ?
@@edgardovigo147 Definitely needs a primer too
@@TheMrFlyBoy18 no. just sandblast or wire wheel and HT ROLEUM is the best. I like in MI and use it. Also tested by other on YT.
Yes sir you aren’t lying! I noticed I had to just end up going thru a “burn off stage” and let it all melt off when I used this vht on my headers. I was 18 or so and wasn’t sure if this was supposed to happen or not. Thought man.. I think I kinda just wasted a whole 2 months of savings on this stuff but didn’t wanna believe it. The long tubes are now rusted to sh*t 10 years later 😅
They still have alot of wall to rust thru but not sure they will be good for cutting/repurposing for turbo setup. don’t want flakes to blow thru
Sounds like a popcorn machine hooked up to a 5000 watt megaphone.
Ok, so a year and a half later, what do they look like?
this stuff is actually the cats ass for durability, they did a salt spay test on this stuff and it blew away cerakote on the same materials they tested thats impresive, i know the clear that you do a 3 step oven bake with is great for protecting the paint from chips oxidize AS WELL.
Well they would have left a lot better my friend if he didn't paint the stainless steel that does not rest. Uninformed and Young I'm sure he'll live and learn
@@markboza6215 source of the test?
So tape mating surfaces, but not threads for 02 sensors? 🤔
Not the O2 sensors! You will ruin them at about $75 a pop, which doesn't make any difference as without the cats, they're ruined anyway. Forget about any A/F calibrations. That's over now.
The o2 insert has a plug in it
Don't really need to. No cats. Basically they exist now to prevent codes. Some times you can just test the average Ohms and hardwire a resister. They can plug it too. Even then if they didn't do a cat delete it the threads are usually a 3B loose tolerance fit for assembly. So paint and grit barely effect it at the very least it will make psuedo locktite lmfao
Is it bad if I paint the mating area ?
@@alexhernandez3894 yes. You need to strip it off and do it again dont scrape it strip it with paint stripper.
Why wouldn’t you just hang the exhausts on wire from ceiling when painting? 🤷🏽♂️
Probably more difficult to control overspray.
Sounds like my lawn mower in florida though
ALLGames&Tech ahahaha!
I smiled so damn big when I heard that downshifting 🤣👏💯🙌
Hopefully you guys will put a muffler or something on it. Its just a little to loud... you are in fart can Civic land now, dont do that to the poor VW lol
bryanviper that car is know to be a rice wagon.... 😒
how mutch hp gained from the r32 badge ?
i am fan of ankle enough to make you wine
I'm sorry but this had me lmfao
30hp easy
don't you mean 32? lol

Thanks guys exactly what I was looking for! Love the finish on your car
Thanks for all of the great info. Header painting is new and my 1965 mustang shorties will be a little easier. It is very similar to my job, where I paint boats. Some brand new and a lot more work and costs, some just sand and paint. I feel that I am now qualified to do my headers.
Sounds like the fart can exhaust 1998 Honda Civic Ex owners buy from Autozone lmao
ZynovFTW haha I thought I was the only one😂
quattrobros my Cibic would crush yer Quattro 😅
This sounds way worse than an eBay knockoff of a AutoZone fart can
That exhaust sounds terrible, it sounds like a wet sloppy fart 😂
After enchilada night
11:49 Look at the ground near the exhaust. It is a wet sloppy fart!
That’s what happens when you put a rice can and no cats on a in-line 4.
I had to watch the whole video to understand,I now agree.
Needs a decent back box on
Could you use vht clear coat instead of the paint you used? What would be the difference because they can both withstand very high temp heat
Kinda sounds like my lawn mower I straight piped.
R32 Badge on a 2.0 NA? Wow...
We're ricers. Thank :)

brad450 just about to say the same lmaoo I got jealous
stainles does not rust it will loose its shine but it will not rust. thats why its called stainless
Nathan Platt poor quality Chinese stainless will rust.
let me know how many ppl burn their house down putting a heat gun inside of a cardboard box like that

Good job guys, well instructed on how to treat and paint headers. 👍🏽
Great job!
Do you know what kind of performance header I can use on my 2013 Honda Accord EXL Coupe v6 to get some extra horsepower?
Dude your videos are awesome! This is the first I've ever seen and I have already subscribed :) Keep it up!!
Loud is one thing, but it doesn't have the nice sound that you get from a nice muffler. Plus your neighborhood is probably plotting your untimely demise. For more sound inside the cabin you can always remove the sound deadening from the floor and firewall.
Could you paint the rest of the exhaust the same way as well? (muffler, resonator, etc.)
Great job on this project, i found it to be very helpful, thanks!
You can also help to promote paint adhesion by preheating the items lightly w/ heat gun.
how long before a catalyst inefficiency code. lol looks like chris fix hand movements
how did that paint hold up? still looking good? no cracking or peeling from the heat?
did the paint last til now? any feedback after applying it. thanks
Sounds horrendous
I remember when Milan once replied to a comment of mine saying that he has something in mind for the wheels of the mark 4. I'm still waiting for when that something in mind happens
You'll see why its taken so long :) I promise there's a reason :D
Two years later. Has something’ happened yet?
if I'm painting an air-cooled Volkswagen engine tins can I use the engine enamel or do I need to use the flame proof
Nice video! Love how descriptive u r 🤙 thanks
Sounds like trash, good job 👍🏼
Lmao
Marcos C. Agreed. I just can not understand why people think exhausted like that sounds good. All the 4cyl cars I've owned I've put high flowing loud exhausted on, but had the exhaust built at a muffler shop and picked muffler to avoid that shitty fart can sound. The best muffler I've found to achieve this is an aero turbine. Had a buddy put one on his civic and it was super deep with 0 rasp.
I agree a nice flow master would mellow and deepen the note and sound better I think...
Mike Brink thanks for the info! I have a few buckets of cat innards that I saved with intentions of figuring out how to refine out the platinum. Now I'll look for a place to cash it in😀
I bet your neighbors love you SMH
Sell that cat it has rhodium, platinum and other precious metals
milanmastracci, How long did you heat up the header in the box? Did the ceramic coating stick pretty well a year after this was done? Thanks!
Looks and sounds great! Well done
I needed this laugh 😂😂
Best tutorial I've watched in months. Very explanatory.
Them popping sounds though 🔥🔥🔥🔥
just wondering can i use this paint to paint bbr grill?
Nice video. I'm sure your neighbors love you.
Stainless doesn't rust.
I find it best to use the kitchen oven to bake painted parts.
Just don't tell your Mom, GF, wife, or whoever runs the kitchen!
Stainless does rust, however it stains-less than normal steel. Overtime, it will rust out
If it's proper "stainless-steel" that is properly processed, it will never rust!
Carl Benz not true, there are different mixes of stainless, and some do rust depending on the content of steel compared to the chrome, and other metals. Just because it has a higher steel content doesnt make it bad stainless steel, its just not the correct stainless for every job. Some are for salt water conditions, some for surgical tools, some for kitchens, then there are cheap stainless for exhaust and expensive stainless for exhausts that will corrode the least.
Yeah, there a several types of stainless, I'm aware of that. But the comment section of this kind/level of video isn't a place to discus metallurgy, if you know what i mean... ;)
Different alloys for different applications.
However, i just commented, because "milanmastracci" thinks he knows shit, which he doesn't. No offense though, not knowing everything gives room for improvement! :)
Carl Benz clearly you think you "know shit" too. In spite of the fact that your original statement is factually wrong. This comment section is the place to discuss metallurgy when some dumbass comes in and says stainless steel doesn't rust... I bet you'll say stainless isn't magnetic either. The term "stainless steel" includes all grades. Some of those grades contain more ferrous metals than the others. You can't make a generalized statement concerning the properties of a material that greatly varies amongst its grades.
It has an insane loudness and you won't be able to tolerate the sound and resonance during a longer driving. I applied rear muffler delete on my 1.4 and it sounds great but not loud and it provides a little bit of popping when rpm drops.
Hey guys, that looked like fun. So, how good is that VHT after a couple of years of use?
Great vid..just be careful when using the cardboard box and heat gun. Had a wrinkle coated valve cover go up in flames once when the box caught fire.
vincycharma shhhhh let natural selection take its course.
5:08 looks like 2 having a doggie 🤣😂🤣
@milanmast can this ceramic paint go on headers when its in a snow based environment. As in yearly snow = lots of salted roads. Will it be fine or could the paint be null due to this type of exposure? Love to hear back if possible, thanks!
The sheer excitement on your face when you down shift and floor it, priceless!
I have had stainless headers on my truck for 8+ years and it goes deep woods and swamps regularly and I have absolutely no rust..buy cheap get cheap quality 🤷🏾♂️
Well my friend that's because stainless steel doesn't rest. But I think you and I both know that. This young kid is just an experienced and totally screwed up a beautiful stainless steel exhaust with a can of $8 paint. Needless to say the little popcorn machine turd monster with a $500 stainless steel exhaust
That sounds horrible. . .and can you please remove that R32 badge.
Hi how your broken katalitic converter?
Does it reduce engine compartment Heat ?
Yep, hes back at it again with the catless headers...pretty sure its not illegal in his area *LOUD COUGH*
MrRangerZr1 its illegal. hes in in ontario
Mykola Shykinov not where I live in Ontario lol
Alexis Dawn everywhere in ontario lol
nn
@@mykolashykinov3140 Bro you're talking out your ass. There are several counties in Ontario that have no emission requirements and/or noise restrictions in regards to road safety vehicles.
I just love when people floor their cars on a cold engine.
Thanks for the Cool Tip. I Noticed you have an Extra Hole, the one with the blue tape. So have 3 holes not 2? Also, how long do you bake in the box?
how long does it take to bake the pipe inside the box?
Stainless steel does not rust lower grades of stainless steel like 409 stainless will discolor but does not rust
The newer style cats (As compared to the bead type in the 70's) use a ceramic extruded honey comb grid will crack when running lean, causing it to overheat. This is why it broke inside. Intake air leak, vacuum leak, restricted injector(s), low fuel pressure, incorrect "Tuner" programming, etc. will all cause the exhaust to get extremely hot. The cat cannot expand enough and cracks, worse case; rattles, chunks turn side ways and blocks exhaust flow, increases back-pressure and will not pass emissions testing. With a pre-O2 sensor and post-O2 sensor, will turn the CEL/MIL on once per second. That is a condition that threatens the cat. Yes...He said "Pass Gas".
Why would you do that much work on a lawn mower engine? Retired ASE Master Tech
Yet another dope vid man!! Keep em coming!!!
will this reduce heat from the headers?
stainless does not rust, it will loose its shine but it will not rust, thats why its called stainless. im a welder and weld stainless all the time
Nathan Platt it does rust but it takes years if the quality of the metal is high
Nathan Platt I heat cycled my hks headers on my old na sr30 s13 and they rusted. They rusted differently to mild steel but still.
The question is what kind of stainless? T304 won't rust. T409 will show surface rust.
I'd be embarrassed to be in that field and publicly state that anything called stainless steel doesn't rust...
I HAVE A POLARIS FLYING BOAT AND THE CAGE IS STAINLESS STEEL. 12 YEARS AND NOT ONE SPOT OF RUST ON IT
Can I clearcoat it? Or is it not gonna make a difference?
Hi guys, Rust Oleum high temp 2000Fº high is good alternative?...Best
ur gonna need catalytic man to pass emissions or no roadworthy
george pacan some states don't have emmisions. also If it's older than 25 years old it doesn't need emissions
unfortunately, milan's in ontario, canada, which require cats. doesn't mean you can't trick the emissions scanner, though... haha
im in ontario too
george pacan u can use a defouler to trick reading
Qwerky01 how can your physically trick an emissions test in Ontario without a catalytic converter? Unless you know someone
Doesnt sound good, but the burble is nice.
Oh l enjoyed this little video reminded me when my brother and l were young we did the same things did up cars well done informative vid and got a smile to my face, cheeky boys last bit was rude lol
I’m need paint mufflers and catalytic converters from my Infiniti for protecting from corrosion ...any store for buying?
isn't it bad to remove the catalytic converter?
Pavlo95 yea it wont pass emissions
It will pass as long as you don't have a cel and they only check via obd
george pacan some states don't have emissions
It will be bad if you dont do a o2 sensor bypass. Emissions inspection will pass without a cat if the vehicle is an emissions exempt. Different places do it by model year, age, etc, or not at all. My area exempts emissions for 1995 or older.
James states? in canada?
sounds like a dirtbike
Never heard a dirtbike sound that shitty. Do they really think it sounds good? I am #21 on your thumbs ups! LOL at the fart can.
Hats off to the guys for making the vid, I didn't know about the ceramic coating in a rattle can. It sure did turn dark after a little running I noticed.
that paint is a waist if time it'll last a little while then just flake off. if those pipes are 304ss not 407ss they'll never rust just get blue from heat.
Waste, not Waist
no, this is way worse
That sounds somewhat similar to my golf 4 1.8 20v when it had muffler only. Now I have installed a new muffler and a resonator from Nissan X-Trail, but when I heard this sound it started me thinking about removing my muffler lol. I can't help it but I love this sound for some unexplainable reason
Did the coat last till now? Could you do a new video and show how it looks now?
Sounds waaaaay too raspy
IMHO removing the cat is just stupid. You gain, how much hp? 10? You could've replaced it with a hi-flow sports cat, gain hp and be legal on the road.
Norbert Chirilenco explain further, how do the highflow cats work?
Lanre Oladejo the hi-flow cat is less restrictive than normal. It works the same way, just the openings inside where the exhaust gases go through are bigger. That way it lets the gases flow easier through. You won't gain the full 10 bhp but 5-6 will be in there, plus that the car is still legal!
www.autos.com/aftermarket-parts/how-a-high-flow-catalytic-converter-increases-engine-performance
About 99% of the time high flow cats do not meet emission requirments so u will still fail an emissions test without a tune to delete the check engine light. And cats are very restrictive so yes you will gain good horespower from just removing something and gain sound. I gain a little over 20 hp from just removing my cats. And i had the dyno tuner turn off the rear o2 sensors so it doesnt have a check engine light. So i pass emissions easily. Its sad that people dont know this. This is why no one runs a hogh flow cat and why so many people have cat deletes and still drive on the road.
We don't have emissions here so all my cars have the cat removed .better gas milage too not having the ristrictions
Fuck emissions glad we don’t have it here where I live lol
Will this also work in turbo headers?
Sounds great greatwork work keep up with the awesome vid
I wonder how many people watch your videos just to see how ridiculous it’s gonna be.
what are you smilin' about? i'd be hidin' my face
Why didn’t you use the VHT Flameproof Primer and Clear?
What about afterwards? how long did the paint last??
sounds like a pickup truck with a broken pipe
So.much rice
Any other way to bake the exhaust if you don't have a heat gun? Also same procedure for motorcycle exhaust?
Spraying down the header with acetone will clean it evenly after scuffing up the surface with a scotch brite pad. Just did a set of headers this afternoon.
why clean them before you sand just shows you know nothing
wear gloves>scuff them>wax grease remove>paint
OK now anyone who know proper paint prep knows not to sand anything with oil dirt or grease on it cause you will end up pushing that shit into the surface when sanding, try and rub oil on a old car door and sand that spot the oil is at, then clean prep and paint and see how that finish turns out, maybe I will make a RUclips clip of what I mean. But don't matter you stupid kids wrecked a nice setup and the car sounds like SHIT.....
I'm all about performance mods, but that motor sounds like shit.
Can i do this to my oem exhaust manifold?
How much did you wait before heating the exhaust?
Now just get a r32 rear and a nice exhuast and you are done
And swap a vrt
You should let your car warm up a minute before you bring it to 6000 RPMs
I've done the same thing twice and after a wile it just comes right off when you brush it with your finger idk why
Nice video. Would like to have seen what could have been done with the old intake in this video using your sand blasting box. The cat was gone, but maybe that old intake could have been restored. Anyway, keep up the great videos!

Really? How would u know. All your baby toys are made of Plastic.
Wrong stainless steel can corrode. Yes it is one of the most resistant alloys, but under certain circumstances it will begin to corrode. And one of those circumstances is when its exposed to high heat temp and moisture.
@@jarretwilson5811 correct.. i.e. marine enviroments. all the years i've been on navy ships; everything corrodes eventually.
Got so mad when he said the stainless steel may have oils on it to keep it from rusting smh 🤦🏻♂️
In all honestly alot of items that are steel are coated to prevent rusting while not in use.
Can I ask how many cans did you used? And did you used primer?
thats very interesting I must admit. repairing exhaust on my golf is in my plans when it gets warmer. but right now I need to sort out bunch of other issues like coolant leak, replacing of fuel pump and replacing messed up throttle. all of that over this weekend. at least that's the plan of sorting all major problems after 3 months including an icing on the cake Alloy decals😁
header.. 1.. not headers.. Goodness people, if you have one header you have a header.. not headers.. frig
and they say hondas are raspy. time for a second resonator or a defouler
