    Black is the hardest colour to paint, it shows every imperfection! Your job looks good besides showing the old clear lines but it's a big job to hide all of that. You did a great job and I loved the video.

    Sand further, fill with bondo, sand smooth would have fixed your lines showing through. Couple more coats of primer would have helped also. Otherwise, pretty good job. You're one of the few I see who wet sanded after the clear to remove the orange peel. Nice work overall.

    From a professional in the auto repair industry: your first reported paint job is pretty good, minus the small sanding defects from the primer. Only big issue I would say to you is to make sure to a get a respirator mask, especially with all the carcinogens inside that 2K clear coat. Take from my experience, you don't want any lung diseases popping up on you out of nowhere. They're definitely not joke when it happens. Other than that, pretty decent work. Keep practicing your craft and you'll do well.

    • @BrianBalatbat
      @BrianBalatbat  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi there, make sure you sand down the old clear coat pretty well and even. You don’t really need a gun if you’re just painting the hood. Just follow what I did with the video and you should be ok. And yes it was cost effective. Body shop wanted to charge $500 to just paint the hood. This cost me about $200 with everything and I learned something new in the process.

    You will have problems with adhesion and longevity waiting that long between base and clear coat. Best to wait no longer than 1 hour for the best chemical adhesion.

  • @mpikas
    @mpikas 2 месяца назад

    rep prep prep, it's all about the prep. I think that you know that you didn't sand the original paint well enough. Unfortunately, it's next to impossible to tell on video how close you are to having sanded it all out, but it could prove an interesting experiment to try to "fix" this as opposed to redoing it. The traditional answer is to sand it down to get it even, prime anyplace you sanded through, and then base and clear.
    OK. I'd be tempted to try to fix it instead, especially if the hood is otherwise flat: instead of sanding it down completely, start with 1000grit (I might consider 600 or 800, but being inexperienced I'd tell you to start with 1000, it will go slower but you'll be less likely to mess it up), and try to see if you can even it out without sanding into the basecoat. Even possibly giving it a heavier coat of clear over and around the uneven areas first. If you can manage to even it out or get it really close without significantly sanding into the base then you could go over what you have left with just clear, kind of like doing a flow coat, and then buff and finish.
    As far as your overall technique goes- you don't have to go as light for the first layer, that's mostly to prevent runs and chemical reactions in difficult situations, which a hood laying flat is not. Going that light might result in a sandy surface on your later coats, just more work to smooth out. Second, especially for the base and clear, keep your spray pattern going front to back to front, with the length of the car. That is less likely to cause any mottling/zebra stripes that you'll notice when you're done (your eyes won't be as likely to notice it if it's there it goes with the length of the car).

      Yes pull the dent out and use bondo to even it out. My only advice is to make sure you sand off old clear coat best as you can so it doesn’t show with new paint like it did to me.
