For any wannabe idiots that say this is awful or anything stupid, The Orang Utan is a rescue Orangutan. She was rescued from poachers. This is not a zoo but rehab centre for Orang Utans where they stay for a while and will be released back to jungle.
Reputable sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers don't allow tourists or volunteers anywhere near the orangutans in their care because the goal is to release them back in the wild with as little habituation to humans as possible. Even before the pandemic, keeping the orangutans away from tourists or visitors was imperative to ensure no illnesses are passed. While this may be a sanctuary, the fact that this orangutan is comfortable around a large group of people shows that this is most likely a usual occurrence and doesn't bode well for a successful wild release.
Orangutans can be so gentle, so loving, yet they are so powerful and extremely agile. Their fingers and hands are like a vice! A grip that is locked on you! As babies they are extremely needy. They cry constantly, why? Because the mother's heart was always next to the child's ear. The mom always held the baby. Letting the baby go and explore a little. Anything that spooks mom, she grabs the baby. If the baby squeals or cries she grabs him or her. The baby constantly has the mother within reach. Until the people who run and set up the Palm Oil Plantations come in. They need the forests clear. Mercenaries are hired to "eliminate" ANY problems. A mother orangutans is a problem. They obviously won't just rent a U-Haul and move. So they take a more "HANDS-ON" APPROACH. The mother's are trapped, or tried to be. They are extremely intelligent animals so little Elmer Fudd traps don't work. So they go to the next level. They shoot the mother, then either sell off the baby for extra money, or they keep it as a mascot or a "toy". During which this baby is teased, tormented, used a target practice, they terrorized him/her, scare it. This baby who was held next to mama's heart now has grown men throwing fruit at him, sneaking up and scaring him. Many of these little fuzzballs get found thank God! But many of them die. Malnutrition because these little fuzzies need milk, nutrients, and love, not rice, water, and fruit. Study these Plantations for yourself and see the damage they do to the wildlife, especially the orangutans! So beautiful and so fun to study, yet treated so harshly, like a commodity and that's CRAP!
She knows how get away from those tourists. A bit of quite time alone before she returns to her duties of entertaining guests who pay for the privilege. A women’s work is never done🧚🏽♀️🧚♂️🦜🍄🐞
I read from a different comment that this place is a rehabilitation for orangutans free to roam the area apparently! Does that sound like something horrendous?
Besides I read this is a rehabilitation place where they can go as they want to in there. Also these places can be a learning opportunity for many people, let's not judge a place until we know know the full backstory.

It's probably from Sepilok, a supposed sanctuary and rehabilitation center in Sabah, that has a long history of allowing paying volunteers to interact with the orangutans and sending young ones to a local hotel for guests to interact with.
Dude humans are such a paradox, we rule the natural world but when we see an orangutan we haul ass to get out of its way because we know it could tear our limb off.
Why is it? Perhaps we shouldn't judge until we know what's going on. Besides reading other comment it sounds like this is a rehabilitation place not a zoo hence why the orangutan is free to roam.

My fave great ape they look so wise plus the babies are the cutest with that hair that sticks up🥰❤️
How bold of her to waltz right past the giant CLOSED sign blocking the path, lmao.
"THIS SIGN WONT STOP ME BECAUSE I CAN'T READ >:)"
All in the name of food

It’s been around 4years since I’ve been there but I think it was at Sarawak,Malaysia and only for orangutans
