If you know you're going to get wiped out and you know it hulking out and trying to take as many traitors with you is pretty cool.

Brutal on his hammer would've been lore fitting. He's one of the largest and strongest primarchs and he's swinging a hammer at you, it should be Brutal. But I do understand they're trying to cover that by having it be Instant Death on all attacks rather than a chance with Murderous Strike

Thanks Ash for all these reviews.I’m working my way through them and soaking up the knowledge and advice before getting stuck in.Salamanders have always been my legion of choice and I’m pretty happy so far although look forward to a dedicated Praetor and Chaplain model at some point

No Cassian :( no Nomus :(
That feels kinda bad honestly, especially after just completing my Nomus model last month. However... Firedrakes are awesome, Pyroclasts look very strong, and Vulkan... What an absolute unit. He's gonna be on the paint desk for me soon. Any chance you'll do any Salamanders up soon? I'd love to see how you paint them.

Great breakdown, definitely helps me figure out what I want to run. I'm planning on playing my Salamanders as the Disciples of the Flame, a post-Drop Site warband of mostly Salamanders that convinced invading Iron Warriors mid-battle to rejoin the Loyalists. My homebrew 40k chapter is directly descended from this warband so it'll be awesome to play them for 30k! Hopefully we get updated rules for their special characters like pre-Vulkan Chapter Master, now a Dreadnought, Cassian Dracos, Xiaphas Jurr, Nomus Rhy'tan, and the Iron Warriors commander Narik Dreygur. It seems like The Awakening Fire is supposed to represent the Disciples of the Flame, especially since Xiaphas is a Chaplain.

Thank you so much for doing all of these, wow! That's such a great amount of work!
Quick side note for the Awakening Fire rite of war - you do have to take the Chaplain Consul on your centurion.

    Covenant of fire 1.0
    - pyroclasts can be taken as troops
    - melta, multi melta and inferno pistols are mastercrafted for free
    - MOVE THROUGH COVER ARMY WIDE
    Covenant of fire 2.0
    - pyroclasts can be taken as troops
Meanwhile limitations are the same for both editions. Thanks GW 😠

    • @thereisnosaurus1
      @thereisnosaurus1 2 года назад +5

The pyroclasts being troops is more of a big deal now they are significantly more brutal with full melta/heavy flamer, two wounds, two CC weapons as well so they can flame then charge with 4 attacks and most importantly, the old rite made them noncompulsory troops where as here you can take a couple of squads as your tax and you're done, or a couple of 5 man flamer support squads if you really want to be miserly on your troops tax and invest everything elsewhere, that's possibly the cheapest troops section in the entire heresy at 170pts.
there is no longer a restriction that you must take as many troops slots as HS/FA COMBINED, which is massively freeing and lets you exploit the above if you want.
another minor change specific to this rite is you can deep strike with termites if you want now, which is still fairly thematic IMO and gives you ways of delivering those pimped out line pyroclasts right up in the guts.
Also, remember that similar changes have been made to most, if not all, other legion rites of war. There are definitely some that still give you real perks for free with limited restrictions, but most have been refocused on allowing easier access to specific force compositions with a minor perk at best and often those with perks are accompanied by serious restrictions.
And lastly, not specific to this rite but very cool in it is that salamanders are no longer forbidden from using phosphex. If you want some REALLY burny fire you can now load out your lev dreads or bring in some seige artillery with phosphex canister shot. This also helps mitigate some of the previous weaknesses of the rite in terms of being able to project real threat into the deep board.
So you're being a little hyperbolic. I'm super sad about the loss of MC melta (though melta baseline has gotten a decent enough buff so it's not all bad) and the 5+ invul/move through cover perks were great too. You're a lot freer in what you can take now and in general the rules have been kind to salamanders' playstyle. I reckon you'll learn to love it ^^.

@@thereisnosaurus1 great post! I don’t have the rules, so your synopsis is very much appreciated. I understand one other boost about pyroclasts you didn’t mention is that they are no longer Bulky AND CAN TAKE RHINOS! That’s huge since before I had to bring land raiders to move them around.
Thanks again for this comment. Gives me a little more hope.

Was a bit worried about viability of the Fireball squad in 2.0 but it's a go.
Jetbike squadron can swap their hbolters for S6 flamers. Lack of army wide move through cover hit them but with meltabombs they are excellent harassment unit.

@@Zabzim 30k and 40k become more strangled with every passing update for each system.
Having a double system army used to be practical back when Age of Darkness was updated 7th ed, but now trying to make an army fit both systems results in a force that doesn't work in either system more often than not.

    I do have some questions:
    1. If a Salamanders model takes a combi-flamer does it count as a Dragon's Breath flamer? Probably not, but that would be awesome.
    2. For The Awakening Fire Rites of War do the Cataphractii and Tartaros Terminator variants of the Centurion count?

I'd love to see some more love for the XVIIIth from GW, somehow the Sallies feel a bit underdevoloped in comparison to many other legions - at least in game with only very limited and tbh not very creative legion specific units :(
But XVIIIth is for me the first and still most badass legion :)

personally I think Rogal Dorn still is tankier.
Vulkan's 3++ save and 4+ IWND are fantastic but with the new Brutal rule his toughness 7 won't mean a lot from the real heavy hitters like Ferrus as the sheer number of wounds could bypass his 3++ just by weight of dice and kill him in a couple of turns.
Dorn's high WS and 4+ to wound can mitigate a lot of attacks even before the Brutal rule takes effect (with his higher wounds also helping) and although Dorn himself lacks the Brutal rule he does have str 8 and Shred and reaping blow meaning he can still dish out the wounds in return.
Against lower strength Primarchs or those that lack Brutal or Shred rules i think he'll be amazing. I could be wrong in my assessment and as always the luck of the dice is a factor but either way i'm looking forward to using Vulkan in my own Salamanders army!

funnily enough im more ok with the cost of maybe taking a wound (and die in case of 1 wound infantry) than with the "if the enemy whiffs you've just 'wasted' your once per game special rule"

Do you think the - 1 to wound with flammer plasma etc
Reduce the plasma effect on 5+.
    It's really cool to me!
