This is awesome! I was just about to start using the NLA editor and one of my favorite creators on the RUclipss comes along and drops a fresh video about it! I love it! 😃 You're the best Pierrick! Thank you so much for all that you do!
Cyclic Strip Time I finally get it. Basically it cycles the animation when the Animated Strip Time key value is grater than the original action's end key. For example if the original action ends at frame 40, when we set the Animated Strip Time to 80, then enabling Cyclic Strip Time will run the animation twice. Notice when we enable Cyclic Strip Time, Action Clip Playback Scale & Repeat options get disabled on side bar - Strip - Action clip panel here is the video link --> ruclips.net/video/khgEdfrapz8/видео.html
Finally! I knew there had to be a honest way to create "Keyed Slow Motion" animation inside of Blender. Digging around on RUclips offer no answers to this one MAJOR animation question. I have been stuck in the cycle of A) Chopping up A strip and assigning different speeds with clever blending back into real time. or B) recording it all at 60 fps or higher then creating the effect within composite programs like After Effects. All the times I seen the animated strip time box, Knew animate means key ability, but never knowing how to make it work. THANK YOU Pierrick. Now I can begin to work this effect in with the 2 dollar addon "NPR Framerate Mixer" for some automated keyed on 2s animations.
I saw an advert for your Alive! course on Instagram. I'm like 4 vids into the Useful resources induction videos, I'm legit thinking this is hands down the best $80 I think I've ever spent and I'm not even into the actual course yet. Thank you for putting together this mind blowing course! 🙏
Sir, I bought your rigging course and It was very helpful. btw I wonder Do you have any plan about facial rigging course. there is almost no facial rigging course in blender. I hope your facial rigging lecture :))
This was a very good explanation of how the NLA works. Thanks for that. There is one thing that not a single video I've watched has explained yet and that is how to blend two animations that go in opposite directions. What I mean is that - let's take Mixamo as an example - you have one action where a character decides to turn around and walk away. The action stops after the first step. But the character is now facing the opposite direction compared to the root/control bone. So when I add a walk cycle action it goes in one way and the other goes in another way. Blending these together ends up looking really weird. If you rotate the root to line up the animations and blend the root wobbles all over the place. And I don't think there's a way to rotate the bones of an already animated action and keep everything working. Especially with a mix of IK and FK. This is a long reply and not a question, so the question is: how do you blend animations that are not lined up?
@@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN I tried that, but for some reason it moved all over the place with the root sliding in and out. Especially since the actions are not in place but off-center, animating the root bone caused a lot of weirdness. But since you're suggesting doing the same (but better) I guess I was on the right track, just lacking the skills.
@@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN This is an absolutely brilliant video. SO much useful information in so little time 👌 This should be enough to get a good workflow up and running.. Thanks for making this 🙂
sometimes what i do is first set the action strip type to add , etc then make it a nla strip, like the first action, then after when i add other actions, i can use the add option, or multiply, but add and combine have better results i think. but if i make it a replace and then add the add option, the rig grows and freaks out, same with multiply and combine.
hrm.. i miss written tutorials.. this about action editor just goes over my head. And its not that i don't understand animation, but its like.. can i use just one keyframe action to set up loc/rot/scale, and the parent of a free-floating weapon i have in the armature? but not connected to it. i'm using 'child of' bone constraint
awesome tutorial, is there a way i can change the direction (alignment) of an action strip for example with mixamo animation; climbs down and turns around but the second action the guy walks the opposite direction, how can i align the second action with the first action?
I havent watched your video to the end(saving it for later). But i really hope you showed us how to combine multiple mixamo animations and use them on a single character. Animating is a hard skill to learn.. Heh i even considered buying a mocap suit to speed up everything. Great video by the way
Do you have a tutorial explaining the action editor, it is really unclear why some animations within the action editor plays in another. A good guide would help.
Thank you! Do you just delete your tracks after baking everything in a new action? Or is it ok to just leave them there, in case you will want to change sommething? Have you encountered any performance issues when using many tracks?
Great stuff, Pierrick. One quick question re: the time warp (animated strip time) - there's no way to have this work on a scene level is there? Current work around is to manually copy the adjusted curve to each character/animated object/camera in the scene, which is a pain.
Great video. If you don't mind me asking: suppose we get all the NLA strips and editing in the right place, bake into a single action, then go on to work on other animation later, how could we save the current NLA strips "layout" of the baked animation in case we wants to make adjustments later on? The only way I can think of is to maybe hide all the NLA strips used, maybe create a Track separating them just for organization sake, or have a duplicated rig for every NLA layout.
A lot is going on refactoring the NLA so we can hope for a proper workflow at some point. But you can mute tracks, you can group them (I believe) so you can create a setup and keep it for later. Not need to use multiple rigs. You could use a separate Blender file for your editing
Is there a way to join the animations of two characters in one Action for export to Unity? Not really a NLA question maybe, but maybe its something you have another video on?
Thanks! Is there an option to offset or even better transform the whole NLA animation in space? So that character's root position would be other what is stored in the animation data, so that clip can be offset in space. I haven't found such option, unless there is some workaround, NLA editor as such is mostly useful for retiming and in-place animations.
@@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN Damn! I have no idea how to do that, you mean there is an option to move a clip's starting position? Like I tried to create a cube that moves 1m along x-axis, then I created another clip, where the cube jumps, from origin to 1m along x-axis. I have no idea how to make so that I could make cube first jump, then continue with walk animation where he landed, so that he eventually ends roughly 2m away from origin.
