Here is my "fix" for getting good autofocus in low light, especially for video: Set the camera to Continous focus mode and set one of the buttons on the back of the camera to "AF-On". You then set your focus area and hold the button and instead of getting crazy focus hunting it's much more usable. At least this is how I do it on my XT3 with this lens.
I've had my 18-55mm for a week now. I was getting frustrated with soft and inconsistent pictures. It LOOKS like the issue is that I needed to change my IS (image stabilisation) setting in my X-T30 menu from Continuous to Shooting Only. I'd read a couple of posts online where people had tried that, compared pictures, and found it better. Something to do with continuous creating a build-up of vibration that doesn't matter when filming so much but hurts still pictures. I've only tried the difference today and THINK I can spot a benefit. My pictures are really clear today, perhaps helped by the bright weather outside ... or by this potential fix. Will see.
I hope it all works out for you, Mike. I didn’t notice that issue but I also don’t think I ever used the continuous IS function. Hopefully now you have it in ‘shooting only’ it will be ok.
@@TheLiamGordon Seems better. Hard to tell, as the weather here became glorious the moment I made the change - so better lighting etc. But it seems both far less soft and no longer halo-y :) I'm relieved, as the 18-55mm with the X-T30 is a nice light-ish combo for hand-carry on my walks. But I wasn't prepared to stick with it if the pictures weren't good. Hopefully sorted.
Great photos. Very nice samples are rare. The f 2.8 (yes 2.8) - 4 is a great all around lens and one of the great bargains in photography, right up there with the Sigma 16mm f 1.4 DC DN. Hi. I have a question regarding the Fuji XF 18-55mm lens. I just bought a second-hand copy of this lens and it makes a grinding noise I am not sure it is normal. When the aperture is on the smaller end (or whenever it is not on the widest aperture), the blades will instantly close up to the respective f stop when I half-press the shutter button. But when I release the shutter I can hear the blades making the noise as the aperture opens fully back up. Closing up makes a noise, but is fast and smooth, but when the blades open back up I can hear the noise but also notice a more stepped motion of the blades. Is this normal?? Thanks
Yes, I think that is normal. I don't know why it takes so long to open back up from small apertures, but mine does it too. I wouldn't quite say its as severe as grinding but it does chatter a bit.

Good question and sadly not a straightforward answer. 16-80 has a much better reach but it’s not going to be as useful in lowlight on the wider end. I think they are optically fairly similar. I think I’d stick with the 18-55 based on size. I much prefer smaller lenses for walking around all day. But if you like to shoot longer and don’t mind the size, the 16-80 is a solid choice.

If you’re just getting started the 18-55 is a decent and affordable starting point & is good for lots of stuff. It’s actually the only Fuji lens I’ve filmed anything with before. 16mm 1.4 seems to be loved by many but I’ve never used it. 10-24 looks good if you need a proper wide angle. I recommend going with what you can afford at first though and adjust from there. It doesn’t have to be perfect when you’re getting started ✌️
You can actually get this lens for as low as $250 used on eBay (auctions)
Dmitry Streak even better! Bargain at that price. I wish I’d thought to check prices on eBay
@@TheLiamGordon It is! It's been around since 2012, that's why the price is this low :)
I won an auction for $250 then the seller canceled because he wanted more. I was the only bidder. So bummed
I just got mine for $230 so I assume that's good??
This lens is way sharper than the 16-80. I had both and returned the 16-80.
drdehaan oh interesting! I mostly heard better reviews of the 16-80. I should get my hands on one to try out.
When you talk about sharpness, do you mean that in relation to street or for other types of photography.
@@sexysilversurfer I talk about it in relation to other lenses I’ve used rather than types of photography. But as I say, I’m not much of a stickler for technical stuff or pixel peeping so my opinions are not coming from a place of carefully looking at lots of lenses side by side. Hope that makes sense :)
Hell no, I've owned both.
What's the ring after the zoom I never figured out ?
The one at the end of the lens? The focus ring. It only works if you’re in manual focus
@@TheLiamGordon thank you man 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Eriol Muarem it’s all good. There’s so many functions on cameras and if it’s not something you ever use it makes sense you wouldn’t know. My xt2 has a setting for the front dial that took a viewer of my videos to explain to me :p
@@TheLiamGordon if I may another question🙏
Maybe just my camera but whenever I change the battery all the settings rest and buttons assignment rest. Is it normal?
Hmm, no that’s not normal. I’ve never had that happen. Maybe check some online forums and see if anybody else knows of the issue
I love the Fuji cameras they are great
I think they’re pretty great too 👍
Do you remember me from camp
Ethan kohina Everybody remembers Ethan and Sam!
Sorry you said u can’t shoot a wedding with this camera ? Or did u mean with the lens ?
My bad, with the lens. The camera will be fine.
To be honest you could actually shoot a wedding with it it would just be more difficult than with wider aperture lenses.
@@TheLiamGordon arh ok thank you for the reply the kit lens and the quality what u get out of the images are amazing definitely gonna get this camera great review. 👍
Loved this review
Thank you kindly :)
Thank you that's really helpful) I am looking for that lens would be my first lens in my first camera XT4 and I want to do videos and photos as well. Probably will buy that one but second hand since I just spend all my money for xt4)))
I think the 18-55 is a great first lens for both photo and video. 16-80 is also a great option but a bit more expensive 👍
How do you like your XT4...? How is it in low light video mode..? At what iso value grain starts to appear..?
No for wedding?
No for a wedding if you are a professional.
If you are just getting started, then maybe it will be ok to start with. It’s just not as good in low light.
@@TheLiamGordon u think it was good with x-s10?
@@spikeweb5193 I never used an x-s10 but no doubt it will work well.
Its available new for around 300$ in einfinity 😇✌️
I didn't know about that website. I think it's grey market products so you don't get the same consumer protection but for those willing to assume a little risk to save more cash it sounds good.
@@TheLiamGordon payment is via paypal. And there is warranty and all.. 14 days replacement policy.. not a little money bro.. hell lot of money..
Also check Panamoz. Com.. here you'll get 1 year product manufacturing warranty.. check
The XF 16-55mm f/2.8 also doesn't have OIS. Otherwise it would have been THE lens xD
I’m not too bothered about having ois. I rarely feel I need it but it is certainly nice to have. 👍
Am acest obiectiv și pot spune că dacă îți cunoști bine aparatura poți să te ridici la nivel profesional...totusi pe mine ma intereseaza mai mult sa obțin imagini artistice cu acest obiectiv decât imagini profesionale.Nice review.
Review about 18-135 Iam waiting
I didn’t know that lens existed until just now 😆 maybe one day I’ll get to review it.
@@TheLiamGordon And so which budjet zoom lens is good for xt30 that you recommend?
In zy the 18-55 is a good budget zoom. Ive seen some great photographers using it. Another good option is the 16-80 if you have a higher budget.
@@TheLiamGordon Thanks a lot ❤ you have some unique style colors which are so cool👍😎
Thanks I’m glad you like my photos 🙏
thanks
와..한글자막 감사합니다.
You're welcome!
I have this one, braw lens
Way better than the canon ones I’ve had in the past!
@@TheLiamGordon I just bought a used 50-230, nice lens if you have enough light. Might look at the 55-200. I think I have gear acquisition syndrome 😁🏴
Drew Eden the 50-230 is much cheaper though and you only get one extra stop of light with the 55-200. There’s not that much in it. Get yourself a wee f2 prime if you need a lowlight lens and you’ll have everything you need 👍
@@TheLiamGordon Tested it over the weekend, nice lens actually and really happy with it. I've posted a few to my Instagram if you fancy a look :)
Who cares of what people want?
Nothing wrong with providing people with information
The Liam Gordon no, you re right! i was thinking too loud maybe😜I just keep telling myself that all the time. by the way loved the review about the Fujinon lens 18-55 as a matter of fact i bought it right after i ran into your review. Thanks🙏🏽
Chimay blue haha, it’s all good. I’m glad you found it useful. It’s a really great little kit lens ✌️
The Liam Gordon yep perfect match with my legendary X Pro1💪🏽
Nice one 🙌
5:38 -- Wow. The disrespect is unreal. Look at the state of that U.S. flag compared to the fascist E.U. banner. Europe wouldn't be what it is today if it hadn't been for American intervention, and this is how we show our respect? Unreal. A complete shame!
It’s got nothing to do with Europeans. That flag stands across from Independence Hall where our nation was declared independent. Thank the Down Town Club in the city of Philadelphia.
