I spent a week in Baltimore before Covid with nothing but my 18-55. I was very happy with my photos, including street shots, museums, aquariums, etc. It was so liberating to not have to worry about carrying extra lenses.

    • @JeffreyHauser

Glad you were able to photograph in Baltimore. I hope your visit was a safe one. I used to photograph in downtown Baltimore, quite frequently for paid assignments. I no longer do so due to the increased crime & violence. Such a sad statement to make about the reality of many cities in America. Even carrying minimal camera equipment, you have to be cautious & vigilant with respect to your surroundings. Twenty to thirty years ago, this was not such a grave matter with respect to safety issues.🙁

I agree the lens solution for ease. I did almost an entire hiking holiday in the Alps with the 18-55 (on a XT3). It delivered the goods. Vis your motorbike pain - if you want fresh air, a simple yet head turning carriage, easy to park and no clothing or helmet hassle, get a 2CV!

I've just bought this lens because I've been hiding behind the power (but limitations too) of my f1.2 56mm for too long. The honest answer to whether I'm a decent photographer is "I'm very average, but I use f1.2-f2.0 a lot and it looks great for some shots". But I've felt increasingly trapped walking around with just 56mm and 14mm prime lenses and, when I went out this week with the 18-55mm for the first time, it's amazing how much freer I felt. Now I just need to kick that 'pixel peeper' mentality out of me where I've become obsesed with image separation and sharpness. Time to find my artist inside, and to let me lead the composing, not the camera. I'll keep my f1.2 56mm with me too, but relying on the f1.2 56mm as my main lens gave me a massive mental block where I'd be thinking "but this will probably be too zoomed-in" before I even got the lens cap off.

As a rider of more than 5 decades, I gotta say I feel your pain. I rode to too many events to count where I was hot and uncomfortable in my heavy pants and jacket, carrying my stuff so it wouldn't get stolen. It always seems to be a trade-off. Do you want the winding roads and rumble of your motor as you negotiate through curves on a crisp Sunday morning, well you gotta take the bugs, heat and dehydration as part of the deal. If you want to carry things, hard cases are the best, but in my opinion, they don't look good. Especially on a Royal Enfield. How about being the coolest guy on the road and get yourself a sidecar. You could carry all your stuff, do a quick change to some lighter gear if you're gonna be walking around a town, and even take an occasional passenger with you! I look forward to all your videos, thank you.
P.S. Chippewa Rally Boots are the most comfortable walk around and riding boots I've ever owned.

I just wanted to write something along the same lines. Welcome to the world of motorcycle travel... I use my bike to go out for landscape photography which mostly includes some hiking. I got myself cases after a year or so hiking around in motorcycle gear (no fun what so ever) but the cases increase the foot print of the bike and if you are in a country where lane splitting is allowed (like me) then you lose that advantage and then you might as well just take the car....

I've had my 18-55mm for a week now. I was getting frustrated with soft and inconsistent pictures. It LOOKS like the issue is that I needed to change my IS (image stabilisation) setting in my X-T30 menu from Continuous to Shooting Only. I'd read a couple of posts online where people had tried that, compared pictures, and found it better. Something to do with continuous creating a build-up of vibration that doesn't matter when filming so much but hurts still pictures. UPDATE: After 4.5 months of 18-55mm I upgraded to the big 16-55mm and X-T4 and am far happier, with random soft pictures a thing of the past and I'm free of the 18-55's fiddly variable aperture. Very happy now.

Omar haven't been back to NJ to see my family since pre-covid. Was thinking of bringing 4 lenses with me when I finally go in June, but this has completely changed my opinion. Even out here in CA I find that I gravitate back to the 18-55 more often than not and always have it with me. Thx for this video.

Great photos. Must say I love this video. I find myself doing the same thing, cruising around on the dual-sport bike grabbing photos. So relaxing and you can get to stop on the shoulder and check out the scene where it would be difficult a lot of times in a car, or draw a lot more attention. Have my camera right on the shoulder strap of my backpack with the peak design capture clip. Happy fun riding out there.

Locking panniers for your bike. Helmet in one riding gear in the other. That’s what I use. Soft sided, ballistic nylon, lockable.

I used to live near Morristown, in place called Mount Arlington. On Friday night I would go to AC to play poker, come back Monday morning. Those were great times... But now I am into photography as well...

I’m trying to figure out my one lens that I’d be happy to grab in a rush. Although I still want to try the 23mm focal length before I decide (might pick up a viltrox though for that), I think I’m coming full circle and back to the 18-55. X lovely video.

      I just got a XT3WW and a I got the 27 .. 2.8...great lens but I'm a Dad of a 5 year old and a 2 year old! Prime will make me a better photographer but I'm leaning on getting the kit lens...more versatile...will get a Viltrox 23 in a few months

Hubby and I drive scooters, yes we have two each 😉 and we have boxes on the back and also have the place under the seat, maybe you can get a box to mount behind the seat?
Very useful to keep things locket up for safe keeping.

Omar I bought a used XT20 based on your videos and loved it. I'm in the process of trading it and all of my Nikon gear in on a used XT4. I'll have just enough left over for a single lens...and it's definitely going to be the 18-55, again due to your great vids and info. Thanks for all you do!

Nice to see the greener side of NJ. You need to swing by Bound Brook....lots of interesting things to photograph downtown, and historic to boot. We can meet up for a photoshoot!

Love this! I am dying for the liberating feeling of going out on a motorcycle to take pictures. Now, I just need the bike! Great video Omar! Also, I don’t think the Chancletas will work!

Omar next time you come out this way let me know. I would enjoy meeting you in person. I live right by Morristown and this location in Whippany. We also have the Great Swamp National wildlife refugee nearby.

As an old rider, you need paniers for the bike, either hard cases or soft. Add a helmet lock and then you can walk around easily. Also look at Sidi boots. They make some excellent low summer boots with good ventilation. Most of all, ride safe..
