I used the 18-55 for years, and have had the 16-55 for about a year. My advice is that if you are serious about image quality and want a definite upgrade from the 18-55, the 16-55 is definitely worth the price. In fact, if I had it to do over again, I would bypass the kit lens and jump straight to the red badge. The 18-55 is a fine lens but its big brother is clearly better. It’s like the difference between 95% and 99% for the critical eye: the 4% is a deal-breaker/maker. I was concerned that the 16-55 doesn’t have OIS but turns out this is not a problem at all-basic technical understanding of photographic physics and your camera, and use of multiple exposures (as needed), easily work around this...I would say lack of OIS will actually help you become a more skilled photographer. If you’re demanding, get the 16-55.

Own a 23 1.4, 60 2.4, 35 1.4, 18-55/F2.8-4. Only 1 body XE3 but with a handgrip. Bought the 16-55 a month ago. Immediately in love with this lens and leaving my lens in dry cabinet. Its a glue to my camera.I agree about the image compare to 18-55.. cannot be describe but i love the tone colour on 16-55 much much better and the sharpness. Hands down its the best lens. Sold the 18-55 a week later after i bought.

Out of my Fuji 3 Primes and 2 Zoom XF lenses (16mm f.14/35mm f1.4/56mm f1.2/10-24mm f4/16-55mm f2.8), if I had to keep only one, it would be the 16-55mm f2.8 hands down.

      Hello,
I have a question that perhaps you could help me with, since you have one of the lenses in question. It might be a stupid question but here goes.
I have a XF 18-55 f/2.8 Fuji lens (came with the camera) and lately I've heard people rave about and seen pictures shot on the XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR prime lens. Would you think it's a good investment to get the 16mm f/1.4 prime lens for someone who has already the XF18-55 f/2.8? I know they are not the same and one is wider and has more stops but I am curious to know if the lens is indeed worth 760 Euros or if I am blinded by my new-knickknack-obsession?
Thanks for any help in this matter.

I love my copy! It is my "go to" lens when I'm not sure what I'll be wanting to accomplish, and I want to simply hang it from a shoulder harness and not carry a bag/a variety of lenses. I do own the F/2 23mm, 35mm, & 50mm lenses. But this zoom gets a lot more use as a general purpose, easy to carry lens. Thank you for the very fair assessment of the lens' pros and cons. I think for most people the pros will outweigh the cons.

As a senior on a limited budget (so I tell my wife) I am looking forward to leaving my trusty 18-55 at home for a bit. Like your blog and the soundtrack . I never felt there was much downside to any of Fuji’s lenses prime or zoom provided they were used appropriately. With the advent of higher FPS ,higher dynamic range and faster processors it’s important to read manuals regarding focus characteristics carefully. This is important for prosumers lest they get discouraged and switch to a “better” system.

Thanks for your great review. As a working pro I really liked your review and loved your style. I really liked your images and I think you have a great eye. Having worked in press and commercial photography for over 30 years! I still only have the 18-55 kit lens, as I mainly shoot with the 10-24mm when needing a wide zoom. I agree with you about the quality of the kit lens, it’s in no way bad but I definitely notice the lack of sharpness more often than not. Having stumbled upon your video it has now made me realise I need to invest in the 16-55 upgrade!! Keep up the good work. 😀

Honestly I loved the image quality but hated the weight. A big benefit of the Fuji system is it’s size. The 18-55 also is good enough for like 90% plus 55mm f/2.8 kind of isn’t enough for portraits anyway so yeah. Get the 50 f/1.0 and keep the 18-55

    Fujinon xf 16-55mm f2.8 r lm wr
    GRANDISSIMA DELUSIONE (disponibile video)

Thanks man, great review. I've pre-ordered this with my new X-T4. Should arrive end of this week, looking forward to it! Sold my A7III and 24-105 f/4 lens for this combo, can't wait! I'm debating with my self if I should go primes, but I think I will go for both! Start out with this, and get some primes later on (maybe 16mm f1.4, and the 56mm). As I'm traveling a bit (or well, used to) the zoom will be great. My only gripe is the size and weight, but still smaller setup then my A7III. Mostly for video, but I have a feeling Fuji will bring out the photographer in me as well ;) subbed for more content in the future!

Владимир Ленин it was a great lens, excellent quality in all zoom ranges and f-stops. It was very much like the 24-105, but I think I actually liked the fuji better. It had some magic to it that I just can't describe. I sold it tho, and got the 16mm F2 and 35mm F2, for a lighter setup. My first primes, and happy so far. Missing the versatility of the zoom sometimes, but the smaller setup and a bit more light is welcoming.

Hi Roman, just started binge watching your videos as you are by far the most practical and straightforward reviewer for the Fuji lenses and cameras. Thanks for the massive effort in creating this videos. Would really appreciate if you can help me with my dilemma. I do beauty and fashion videos in youtube and own the XT2 and the 56mmf1.2 as well as the 18-55mm kit lens. I still feel I'm not getting the same quality of videos as I wanted out from the 2 lenses. The 56mmf1.2 whilst amazing with portrait photos, using it for beauty videos is just terrible with its noisy autofocus. I'm not a pro just a newbie in the camera system who just happened to get the Fuji XT2 as my first camera. I'm considering upgrading to the XT4 but given what I do with fashion & beauty videos, what would be the best Fuji lens with good and silent autofocus that you can recommend? And would you think upgrading to the XT4 from the XT2 for videos is worth it? Thanks heaps!

Now if I mainly project to shoot stills and very few videos, should I spend the extra money on the XT4 or is the XT3 plenty enough for photography even without the IBIS? Considering which body I'll choose should I go for the 16-55 (with no OIS) or 16-80? @@max-olson You know, it's funny, but the size & weight in practice are not bothering me at all. The handling of the lens is excellent and it feels good in the hand; better actually than the much lighter 18-55 kit lens. It also helps that, when zooming in, the lens extends only a little bit, whereas a lens like the 16-80 becomes twice as tall. Having said all that, I use this lens in combination with an XT2, which balances very nicely against the lens. I have also used it on the much smaller XT20, which is doable, but would never be my preferred choice.

@@max-olson The 16-80 is known to be soft at the end of the focal spectres, both wide-angle and tele. And some say that the corners are soft as well. The 16-55 is very sharp across the entire range. The workmanship is extraordinary; it's a red badge zoom and that's not just a marketing ploy; you will feel the difference immediately. For me, also important was the 2.8 versus 4.0. With the 16-55, I can shoot portraits at 2.8 at, say, 50mm (which is a focal length that I like a lot) and achieve good background separation. With the 16-80 at 4.0 you can achieve that too, but you need to back up a lot further, which is not always practical. Zooming in, the 16-80 extends a lot, which makes it more prone to dust suck. Finally, I had some doubt about the fact that the OIS turns off automatically when placed on a tripod; I prefer to be able to turn it off manually (although so far I have not read any complaints about that; time will tell). Of course, the 16-80 DOES have OIS, while the 16-55 does not. Since I hardly shoot any video, that does no bother me, but for you this might be different. To me, it's really an (easy) choice between a consumer travel lens and a pro standard zoom (if that does not sound too snobbish; I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination :)). Best buy of 2020.

Hey Roman, love your channel and came back to watch this video again as I’m trying to decide what lens I should get next. I’m new to photography and have the xt3 with the 18-55 , but want to get into some portraiture/street but also some video on the side. I was thinking of going with the 16-55 2.8 or the 23mm f2 and the 50mm f2 (or maybe just the 35mm f2 with the kit Lens for video) what do u suggest ?

This is such a detailed and well explained review :) I enjoyed it very much, thank you for this!
However, I am currently in a state of dilemma. Well, I recently switched systems from Canon to Fuji and I have a hard time deciding which lens should I get. I’m currently using an X-T4 and loving it so far. I am a photographer (just a hobbyist) and I have an XF 10-24 f4 because I need the wide angle shot to take photos of cityscape/landscapes and also did a bit of vlogging with it as well. I would be doing mainly photograph still, but would like to do some videography in the future. What lens should I go with next? I’m torn between the XF 16-55mm f2.8 or a bunch of primes of 23mm f2 + 35mm f2 + 50mm f2. I’m not considering the fast primes of f1.4 because I heard the autofocus is not great as it’s an old lens with old focusing motors. The f1.4 primes are great lenses which produce amazing pictures (don’t get me wrong), but I wouldn’t mind the f2 as they have better motors and faster autofocus which will help my videography in the future. I am aware that the XF 16-55 f2.8 is great for video as well because of its linear motor (LM) with silent yet fast autofocus.
So knowing that I’m just a hobbyist photographer who would like to try to produce cinematic videos in the future, which lens do you recommend? XF 16-55mm f2.8 or the f2 primes? Cost will not be an issue for me as they add up to roughly the same price. Thanks! Your opinion on this will be greatly appreciated.

Ive had this lens since released and i find that i dont have the confidence to use it for street photography due to its size!! And have you ever felt that using primes on the street is better for size, weight and stealth? I only use this lens for family events and maybe travel because of its size, whats your favourite focal length for Street photography?

First off agreed that it was a great review. The center stays sharp across the zoom range. At the corners 16mm is a touch soft, 30mm not as good as the center but still very good and at 55mm a bit softer than 16mm. At 16mm f/2.8 this lens is almost identical to the XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR at f/2.8 which is an amazing lens. IMO the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 is better than the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens. Outside of Fujifilm's Fujinon cine lenses this is as good as it gets. In the end unless someone pixel peeping no one will notice. I have this lens and It is worth every penny. If I could only have one lens this would be it. The only drawback is that it's really big which is why many times I'll carry and use a few primes.

    Hello,
I have a question that perhaps Roman or anyone here could answer.

_"What you think of the 18-55 kit?
      "_
It's an excellent lens and much better than any Canon or Nikon kit lens. If you're shooting an X-Trans II 16MP sensor, can live with the f/4 aperture on the long end and don't need weather resistance the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 is overkill. If you're using X-Trans III or IV sensor, printing large images and could use weather resistance the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 will make a difference. Because of the OIS the XF 18-55mm lens is a better choice for video.

@@snapsbyfox Good thought. The XF 16-80mm is an excellent choice for video over the 18-55mm because it's weather resistant, has a longer reach, constant f/stop and I suspect a bit better build since it's WR rated. The only downsides are size and cost. The 16-55mm might be the most commonly found XF lens on the used market which has depressed its price making it a great deal whereas the 16-80mm on the used market still commands a high price. All told IMO if cost isn't an issue the 16-80mm would be the way to go.
