    The 35 f2 is a superb lens. I recently sold off the 23mm f1.4 and replaced it with the 35/2 and have absolutely no regrets. When I think about it, I have never gravitated heavily towards the 23 (35 equiv in FF) and pretty much always go back to the standard 'fifty' and a 28 wide paired together. About 80% of shots will be taken on the fifty and just pull the wide angle when I really need wide or want that perspective. At the present I have the wide end covered with the TTArtisan 17mm f1.4, which works very well indeed on the Fuji bodies. I'm definately not missing the 23 1.4 with that combo.

    • @TheLiamGordon

      It has been one of the best lenses I've ever had. Since making that review I actually started gravitating to 35mm FF but still feel the 35 f2 was an important lens for me. Those TT artisan lenses look interesting. Im yet to get my hands on one.

      @@TheLiamGordon The 17 1.4 has a few party tricks, aside from speed, hard infinity stop, which on mine at least seems accruately calibrated. 10 bladed diaphragm throws sun stars on point light sources, even at quite wide apertures. The tapered barrel gets out of the way of the viewfinder on X Pro bodies. Its a handy lens for small money.

    Thanks for the review. This was the first Fujifilm lens that I picked up when I bought my XPro 2 a few years ago. I have acquired lots of Fujifilm and vintage lenses since then, but this once remains my favourite. When I travel, it is always in my bag, given it’s flexibility. If I’m heading out for the day, I will often take just the 16mm 2.8 and the 35mm 2.0. Enjoyed the photos. Thank you.

    I upgraded from an XT10 to the XT2 a few months back and now have a used 23mm f2. Great lens, I may have bought the 35mm but they didn't have a used one in stock. I now also have the 16mm f2 so I'm now thinking, I might be better trading the 23 in for the 35. This would give a better range. I also have the 18-55 f2.8 to 4.0, it's nice ti have the choice.

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  5 лет назад +1

      Drew Eden if you get the most use out of the 23 then it might be worth sticking to it. A lot of folks prefer the wider focal length. But I see your reasoning with having the 16 already

    4:04 what do you mean why don't you want to shoot less than F2 most of the time just curious?
    Also that's a lot of noise in the black at 5:33. Would you say that is a drawback of this lens or is that RUclips diluting the quality a bit?
    Thanks.

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  3 года назад

      I meant I don't really shoot at f1.4 and I'm happy to trade it for the WR.
      At 5:33, looking at the original file, it's partly RUclips creating the ugly muddy noise. The original file looks grainy but I have a high tolerance for Fuji's digital grain and I also brightened that image quite a bit if I remember correctly. So none of that would have helped the final look in the video.
      Either way, I don't think the lens is to blame for that.

    I've had problems with this lens going below f5.6. I usually shoot manual and have noticed significant softness on my point of focus. I realize if I'm shooting a portrait at 2.8 or 2.0 some of the face isn't going to be sharp. But damn, I'm nailing the eye focus and the result is always the same. Soft/unsharp eyes.

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  5 лет назад

      Jay Wise ... Jay, you brought up a good point. I returned the 23 f2 because it was a little too soft wide open at close range. Because that’s what I’d have often used it for. I was comparing it to a sigma 35 art lens though so it had big shoes to fill.
      With the 35 f2, I didn’t really test it in the same way. I use it for street and travel instead of work so I was largely sold on the size, price, and weather resistance.
      I’ve been playing with it today and you are correct, it is softer at f2 at close range. My copy at least, is not so soft that I would hesitate to use the image. It could probably be fixed quickly in photoshop too.
      Thank you for pointing this out. I will have to adjust how I talk about this lens in the future 👍 I do still love it though 🙂

    My solution for street work is the amazing Fuji X H2 and the FUJI XF 16mm f2.8 prime. It's far better than the Fuji X100V point and shoot solution. The slight extra weight is worth it for catching a special moment in vid or pic. Moments come and go once in a lifetime. You need to be ready!

    Truly superb samples, and your commentary all makes sense to me. It's also impressive that you are careful to make room for people with different approaches and photographic "eyes". Clearly yours is amazing, and there's nothing you are "imagining" about the IQ that Fuji delivers. I've used full Nikon and Canon kits, and am switching completely at this point to the Fuji; even with the smaller APS-C sensor sizes, their trans-x technology, dynamic range, and superb lenses produce IMHO better image quality, as well as more advanced usability. Great review here!

      I think if you’re trying to stay below 6400, there will be plenty times that it won’t be fast enough in low light. The 35 1.4 is going to do a bit better at keeping your ISO down, just bear in mind how much more money it is :)

    Just a quick question. When you were attaching this lens to your camera. Did it attach immediately with a "click" or did it seem difficult to get on? Almost like you had to force twist it, which was making me nervous while applying. I am using the xt30 with this and it did not attach with ease as with my 15-45mm lens. I just want to make sure nothing is wrong with my lens.

    I have a serious question for you: I am going to buy a new Fuji camera. I am an amateur shooter with Nikon entry level: Nikon D3500 but I have been working for a couple of years in my region and I have been earning some money, I think I could be more professional in next two years. My question is: I will buy a Fuji Body after quarantine, probably X-T3 or X-T30. I have now chance to buy one lens; I was checking the offer and I was convinced that best for me should be body and 18-55 mm F2-8 4.0. Everyone says is a good lens to start with but I was checking and I would pay same money if I buy body and add 18-55 mm or 35 mm F2, the prices is almost the same. My primary work with my new camera should be portraits and social events, I mean, I think it´s the place where I can earn more money now to buy my sports lens. I like street photography, travel, too. Wich of this two lenses would you be ibest for those purpose? 35 F2 could give me a decent bokeh for portraits? What would you pick up in my case and why? I understand I could learn more about composition with 35 mm. My only reason to not to buy 35 mm is because I am not sure if I can make right all shoots in social events. What do you think? I like examples photos with 35 mm, they are sharper.
    I really love sports phtography, I´d like to be a sports shooter with this camera but Long lens will come in the future.

      @TheLiamGordon  4 года назад +1

      Hi Danny! I think you would be fine starting with the 18-55. It’s a useful lens to have and will be versatile enough for events at first. 35 will get a little restrictive if you are in a tight space. Once you make some money you’ll be able to save up for all the fancy lenses you need :)

      Morrie Glick Thanks, Morrie! I guess it will depend on how low the low light is and how much you can/are willing to slow your shutter. I often find if I’m shooting streets at night I’ll be above 6400 but I’m usually trying to shoot at 1/250 because I can’t stay still 😂 Do you shoot a lot at night?

    You made a good review earlier about the xf23 in comparison with the sigma lens. Would you say that the xf35 comes closer in terms of sharpness?

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  5 лет назад +1

      Good question Christian. I haven’t done a side by side comparison so I’m not 100%. However, I’d say the xf35 is just about as sharp as the sigma most of the time, but at f2 at close range the sigma is still easily sharper. The xf35 basically suffers the same close range problem as the 23, although maybe not as badly.
      I wish lenses weren’t this complex. Basically the xf35 is my current go-to favorite lens, but if you’re shooting a lot of close up photos at f2 it might not be the best bet.

      Danyal Fryer it depends on your use of it. I don’t think you’d be disappointed with either.
      This is basically how I made the choice... I’d get the 1.4 if I was shooting weddings or models or something similar where clients are paying a lot of money for photos. Because I’d probably need that 1.4 aperture.
      Since I’m shooting street and travel for myself and RUclips, the f2 meets my needs, leaves a few hundred bucks in my pocket and has weather resistance... That being said, it produces beautiful sharp images that I can print large and would still be happy delivering to a paying client.
