    Chris, I did a full Porsche Carbon Ceramic conversation on my E60 M5 15 years ago… speak to BG Developments in Bromsgrove or reach out as I still have the drawings for the disc bells and calliper carriers to convert the PCCB’s to BMW, front and rear (rears had the handbrake designed in the bells) 👍

      Please share! I was about to order the carbon ceramics from a F82/F87 to bolt up to my E61 M. But PCCB sounds way more interesting. How difficult and expensive did that project turn out? How well did Porsche parts integrate with the car? Really cool, never heard of someone doing that retrofit.

    Chris rationalizes rebuilding the M5's engine by asserting he will then have a new car. Nothing could be further from the truth.
    His semi-desperate optimism resonated with me because I've been there. In my mid-20s I was eaten out of house and home by a 1970 E-Type roadster. It took eight months to sink in that I was never going to enjoy owning that car.
    Imagine being 25, single, living in a swinging city and swanning around in an E-Type. Sounds ideal, right? If it was a Series 1, it might well have been. But when British Leyland took over production, Jaguar's formerly good reputation for reliability was forever sullied.
    Being stranded on the shoulder of a freeway late at night in the driving rain, before cell phones, has a way of diminishing the appeal of even the world's sexiest sports car. By the time I unloaded it I was glad to see it go.

    I had a Golf R32 for a couple of years. I enjoyed nothing more than going to the “doctor” to put it up and discuss what needs fixing. Have you owned an unreliable European car? Apparently not. I remember my dad having a great owner experience with his Jaguar Mark 2. But that was before British Leyland. When Car and Driver called the Rover 2000 TC the best sport sedan on the planet, my dad bought one sight unseen. And engineering-wise it was in a class of its own. But it was assembled by workers whose Marxist union leadership told them would go to the people who oppresed them. The car literally fell apart within a year. My dad liked that car so much, thinking its poor reliability was a fluke, he bought another. Same result.
      It took the Japanese to shoe the industry how to build a reliable car.
      I experienced the misfortune of owning a 1970 Series 2 XK-E.

    It’s funny you mention how good the sound of the hifi in this car. We have a 2007 335i that’s the same year as this car. The car is 17+ years old and it sounds way better than the optional/upgraded stereo systems available in new cars now.

    • @kylem7457
      @kylem7457 9 месяцев назад

      Not bashing because I love the content. But as an e60 m5 owner I think he’s under estimating costs here. I know that Intake and plenum from infinity design is £3.5k! I’d say he’s getting free to cheap labour to only be at £10k for all that work! Most of the work he’s done here I’ve also done to mine and I was at £10k just for the intake, rod bearings and control arms. Let alone the clutch and anything else!

    Chris, the way you describe the SMG is spot on, you need to drive the car to that gearbox, which was for me M & S6 everyday. All those reviews who day the the gearbox is hopeless only drive it in Auto mode (in which is is as they say)
    I miss mine, had it for 2 years, flogged it to hell every single day (35000ks) and the only issue i had was throttle actuators, but was expected. Not expected on 2nd day of ownership though.
    Avg fuel consumption was at least 21L/100km

    • @bradcomis1066
      @bradcomis1066 9 месяцев назад

      21L/100km! Wish I could afford those sorts of bills haha. That's nearly $50 to drive 100km here in Canada. Pretty close to saying it would be worth it in an M5 though.

    "Intake noise is the future" - YES... YES... I'm not sure how long I've been saying this... my Corrado VR6 used to rock a BMC CDA airbox and boy that thing made the VR6 really bellow... but the exhaust note remained completely reasonable and not annoying AF for other people. On the E61, I'm not fortunate enough to have an M5 but I do have an E61 520d of a similar vintage and as every year goes by, I love it more and more. Yes it's expensive to keep on the road but I've done a lot of repairs myself which has kept it manageable.. it's a superb car and it's crazy how cheap you can pick them up for these days. Just, as eluded to in this video, they are a bit needy now at this age in terms of maintenance :)

    The new cars are all just crap plastic. That is a proper car! As you say, the seats, engine, tailgate just work. You got me to buy the E91 335i done perfectly for the kids with plenty of power to spare. I want another!

    Cool cars. I remember from my 535d e61 days going through all that with the I drive and suspension. Not to mention warped brake discs, thermostat, turbo pipes, new torque converter etc etc.

    If it makes you feel any better Chris, they did about 12-14 mpg when they were brand new. Fairly certain I specced this car up back in the day when I worked for BMW GB.

    17:07 reminds me of the phrase "Land Rover: Making Mechanics out of Owners since 1948." Smashing video though, and a wonderful car. Health to drive.

    I’ve had a ton of sports and super cars. My e60 M5 v10 was a love hate!!!! I had rare 6MT and it was glorious especially with muffler deletes it sounded insane. However it broke every other drive! As Chris says it’s $2k every time too. Battery went flat out of nowhere & massive pain to replace and reset Ecu. Then the throttle acculaters went out $3k. Then steering angle sensor went and I damn near crashed when I lost steering mid intersection. It’s like that one GF you had that was high maintenance & psycho but damn at times she made you very happy 😂

    Great video.Keeping old great cars going is cool. Also, think of the energy/implications you've saved in not creating a new car.

      Keeping old great cars going *is* cool, but don't kid yourself.
      If you were brave enough to use this as a daily driver, 10,000 miles a year at 14mpg means you'd be emitting about 7.2 tonnes of CO2 a year. That's roughly comparable to the emissions produced when manufacturing an EV (McKinsey estimated between 5 and 10 tonnes of CO2).
      A Tesla Model 3, charged on UK grid electricity as of 2023, would cause about 300kg of emissions when driven 10,000 miles.
      So after, at most, 18 months of driving, the total emissions from buying a new Tesla would be lower than the M5.
      There are a variety of ways in which we'll be able to keep classic cars on the road and mitigate the carbon impact, but they will be much more expensive than keeping an EV as your daily driver and saving the classic car for the weekends.

    On the oil consumption. I used 3 to 4 litres of oil on a round trip to Le Mans last year from Milan via Monaco. The average speed was higher than what I’d be comfortable mentioning but I think with a big engine with lots of pistons with some miles on it you’re bound to have some oil usage. I do also have a leaky main seal but whatever. It used to bother me but I don’t let it anymore and it’s only heavy on oil when used at high RPM, it’s pretty good doing to the shops and around town.
    Car was Mercedes E55 Kompressor
