Ive seen rangers, SUV's getting their bushings, cv joints, and tie rods replaced in less than a year, then one time this dirty old LC200 with worn out tires came in, we checked the underchassis and nope, everything is still fine, just needed an oil change and new tires, meanwhile at the back of the shop, we had 5 range rovers with barely any mud underneath that already has broken air suspensions, leaking radiators, leaking oil pans and all kinds of electronic issues. The range rovers are on average have 60k to 80k miles lol. I can confirm that LC's are really built with quality and reliability in mind.

I had an Landcruiser 80 series and I also have an amusing anecdote. Around 12years ago I took said Landcruiser towing a Toyota Supra on a trailer to a track day. My mate towed his Subaru on a trailer with his Volvo XC90. It’s been long enough now, so I will reveal that we stayed at Brands Hatch Place Hotel just up the road from the circuit. There’s not much parking there for long vehicles, so we were pointed in the direction of a wooded area adjacent a large lawn. It was winter and the ground was wet. I think you have a idea where I’m going with this. My mate in his infinite wisdom, decides to drive onto the lawn and turn around with his Volvo and trailer. It’s going ok until he turns and the struggle for traction begins. He ends up more or less facing the right way to drive but is up to his axles by now. Going no where. Properly sunk. He cries for help and asks if we should unhitch the Landcruiser to tow him out. To which I laugh and back up to the front of his car with trailer attached. Didn’t have a tow rope to used a 3” trailer ratchet strap and hooked it to the back of my trailer and then to his towing eye. I had BF Goodrich All terrain tyres, which helped compared to his road tyres. Any way, in case you’re not aware the Landcruiser 80 series has not only a centre locking diff, also a rear locking diff AND a front locking diff. So I put it in low box and locked the diffs up and pulled his Volvo with trailer attached and Subaru loaded on it, out with my my Landcruiser with trailer attached and supra loaded on it. My GXL V8 ute was a beast... I loved that thing, had it as a company car when I worked for a mining company in Kalgoorlie. I used it as a 4WD work ute every single day and in the most demanding of conditions. There was almost nothing it couldn't take in its stride. If anything, I'd say the V8 was a bit too powerful for 99% of what people would need and probably not worth the extra money unless you really need it. It never even hinted at letting me down, no matter what the temperature or task, but thank goodness I never had to pay for the fuel! It was shocking how thirsty it was when it was being worked. But as the saying goes: If you wanna go to the outback, take a Land Rover. If you wanna come home again, take a LandCruiser. Out there, nothing else will do.

This is a really good tribute to a car whose real beauty is hidden underneath....The breadth of its abilities, the ownership experience, the static engineering and the real-world dependability of the 200 Series silently screams "SOD OFF" to every proponent of its (non-existent) competitors!!! Thank you Chris!!! Cheers from Nairobi, Kenya
I really understand your love and appreciation for your car. I own a Pajero 2800 intercooler turbo, a BMW 520 F10, a SEAT IBIZA GTI 16v group A rally car and a Toyota Yaris. By far my Pajero is my favorite car (and I know is not as good as a Toyota). 25 years and 222,258 miles after, I still love it and enjoy it every day as my daily drive and as a family car... Reliable as hell, I used it as my recce car for Cyprus Rally twice, 2010 & 2011 (meaning, it did the whole rally 6 times) and then it was my service car. I tow my trolley with the rally car to all the events. Still standing strong. Respect!
One of the only cars I ever sold as a used car salesman in Johannesburg that had over 350 000km`s on the clock and sold for R50 000.00 over retail book value...the minute we advertised it for sale the phone started ringing and didn`t stop for over a week after it sold... P.S : You have very fine taste in dogs too Chris, English Bull Terriers are the best breed ever!!!

In Australia the LC200 and all the other models of LC are king and for a reason. I have one of the first 200's that came to Australia, 2007 Sahara, similar to yours except no seat heating - it doesn't get cold here at least in WA. But you are absolutely correct, they are an immensely capable vehicle, and put most others to shame in going through the rough and tough. Yes they love to drink, but hey in Australia which is a huge place as compared to the UK, then you do what you have to do in order to get around. I love the simplicity of the vehicle and its virtually 'bullet proof' performance and reliability! I've said to my wife, I have no desire to get another car for the purpose that I use this one. Good review. 👍
@@fastlion6553 with my 200 I get around 15-16 litres/100 kms around town, 13-14 litres on the open road or highway and when I’m on the boggy tracks in the bush or the beach then I can expect to get anywhere from 18-24 litres/100 kilometres. Like any situation the variables change depending on the road conditions, tyre pressures and how much gear you are carrying. The beaches down here in the great southern and south west are pretty soft so you have to be prepared to go through the fuel.
These are the Chris Harris videos I was unknowingly waiting for. Never watched him on Top Gear as it died for me when the real trio left but Chris is so good just on his own.
My grandpa owns an old Land Cruiser, and it is honestly one of the nicest cars to drive in. So when I heard that it is getting discontinued, I got a bit sad.
My neighbor has this car and they have had it for over 20 years and they swear by it for its comfort and capability, they drive to Turkey on a regular basis. It's tough and an enjoyable ride. I agree with you far superior to most high end SUV's
Have a mate in NZ that put one on its roof in a lake completely submerged. 24 hours later, it was rescued, fluids drained, etc, and he's still using it. Everything still works, and that was in 2008. Got my father one in 2006, and he still says it's the best car he's ever owned. Towed his caravan 21 miles before realising the caravans brakes were still on. I'm not talking about a modern caravan but an old one that tipped the scales at close to 2 tons. Didn't even notice, though caravan needed new tyres and rims.
More videos of this please! I just bought a 200 series here in the States and catching up on various maintenance. I have already fallen in love and have completely forgotten about my 100 series I just parted with.
This car is a tank. If not because of London's ULEZ zone I'd have one yesterday! That 4.5 V8 diesel is a nuclear reliable unit. Well done Chris. Been a fan since your Autocar days.
I have a 2013 URJ200 (US V8 gas version) in New England. Chris is spot on with his review. It just proceeds... anywhere, even towing our 2 ton travel trailer. A personal bonus is it that it doesn't stand out. There are so few of them that one really knows what it is. But the ones who know... they know. I plan to keep it forever.
Love the way he keeps the reviews very different every one’s doing hi end cars as a review nobody keeps it real the message is you don’t need to spend thousands to make you self happy anybody can have a nice new car, these days it’s not like it was when l was at school cars are not as special as they once was on the road and everyone is getting in to debt for something they can’t afford and doesn’t really make them truly happy because if it did they would keep it for ever and remember it or keep it until you really needed a new car l Love to see a top gear show or a car show on older cars cars that was out of your price range but now in arms reach l think that’s what we need as times are getting harder also it saves the planet keep the reviews coming 👏🏾👍🏾👊🏽
Is that a (u.s.a. here) bull terrier? My youngest brother had one of these with that straight snout but his was white with a black circle around his eye. Was the most good natured, loving dog I've ever been around and would excitedly run and constantly spring up in the air like a deer on caffeine😄 little guy just died at 12-13 years old and my other brother buried him on their tree covered 5 acre property where he spent the last 7 years. Edit- yeah it is. Aka the ole US Spuds MacKenzie mascot and my brother's dog looked identical.
Buying that Land Cruiser was one of the best decisions in my life. I wouldn't add nor subtract anything more from what has been said about this car. It's simply the best, oldschool and long lasting vehicle one can get in the whole car engineering history. And to tell the truth - they don't make this kind of cars any more. It's a partner in everything for life.
I’m an European living in west Africa, and I can confirm these are the must have cars, the premium luxury vehicle everyone aspires to have at some point in their lives. Can’t beat Toyota and the Land Cruiser in terms of build quality and reliability. It’s a top top car.
Recently upgraded my 03 LC Amazon with 275000 miles (everything working) to a LC V8. Only reason needed a little more motorway speed. Have to endorse everything you say Chris fantastic car best 4x4. Had 3 Range Rovers 1 defender who all needed regular trips to the dealers.
I bought a new 2021 Land Cruiser to tow my caravan which it did admirably for a 13 month trip around Australia. I have sold the caravan now but there's no way I'm selling my LC. I love this car. Comfort plus and probably as reliable as any car on the market today.
I have what I like to think is a baby Land Cruiser - a 12 year old Rav4 - beefy and sturdy. Frankly I don't see too much difference in my impressions and my feelings - built to last and built to perform. Love it! But having said that - this is the puppy I would love to have when my car grows up!! I work extensively in the Arabian gulf, and the countries there are just oozing with these puppies, and performing with astonishing reliability.
So glad you made this video Chris! I’m a Brit car enthusiast living in California and have really fallen for the Toyota brand! These land cruisers are the ultimate do it all vehicles! I currently have ‘21 4runner which you guys unfortunately do not get in the UK. Totally over engineered, bullet proof and most capable body on frame vehicle’s out there! I recommend watching Dave from “Automotive press” RUclips channel to truly understand how amazing these vehicles are!
I am the same, i started working in Nigeria a few years ago, 3/4 of the cars there are toyota. It seems its only the UK or Europe who are in the dark. Since working here, i really want the 5.7L V8 Tundra. It's the pickup chassis to your 4runner
I LOVE that you made this video! Of all the different cars I've driven, Land Cruisers have always been my favorites. I'm also sad at the same time, because you're adding to the Land Cruiser hype, pushing up the prices even more just before I'm about to buy one. 😂
I sold our 2000 V8 petrol in Dubai with over 400,000 km ,everything still working to a very happy local, who is still running it hard. They do get through Dunlops at an alarming rate though! Nice tribute Chris thanks!
We need a full length adventure out in this thing Chris. Remember its not just this one, its generations of Landcruiser's before it that brought us here, All brilliant in their own way when released. Had an 80 series until recently and was started to show some age after THIRTY years. Moved on to the 200 as soon as I heard they were dropping the V8 and the Tailgate. Impresses me every day I drive it. 3 kids 1 wife and half the house in the back for trips away, no worries, There and Back again.
Perfectly done, Chris. It is *not* an SUV, it's a pukka 4WD off-roader with a lot of creature comforts built to industrial standards. If want something that makes an impression at a swanky event, get a Range Rover: if you want something that will muck in and get on with it, get a Toyo LandCruiser.
Back in 2008 I traded my petrol Landcruiser - same model as Chris's - for a new Range Rover Supercharged. The RR has treated me well, the local Land Rover dealership is another story, but as time has passed I've come to appreciate what I gave up with the Landcruiser. There is nothing in the current crop of Land Rover, M-B, BMW, Jeep and Toyota SUV's that impresses me at all until... Almost 18 months ago I put down a deposit on an Ineos Grenadier looking for a traditional work horse, honest SUV. I'm still waiting to see how that works out because in North America Ineos Auto appear to have promised lots and been slow to deliver. May 2023 will be my first opportunity for a test drive with delivery at the end of 2023 so my patience is running thin but as Chris points out, there aren't a lot of (SUV) alternatives.
Chris, we need more journalists to do reviews like this, not about new cars, but older ones, maybe ones weve forgotten about, ones that revive memories for people. Excellent
Beautiful video Chris. Once you go Land Cruiser 100 or 200 it is hard to sit in anything else and enjoy it. Everything else pales by comparison. I have owned 2 Land Cruiser 100 1HD-FTE’s and a LX570. I regret selling each of them. I now drive a Prado 150 V6 and think about my “Proper” Land Cruisers every time I drive the Prado. The 1HD-FTE 4.2 inline 6 turbo diesel is built on another level in terms of durability. Built in a hermetically sealed factory, single pulley on the entire accessory belt drive system, dual belts on the alternator, the service manual suggests using a wire brush for cleaning the injectors. They can also make 500kw and over 1000nm when tuned.
The best part about 100/200/300 series landcruisers is the accessibility of parts, and their reliability - toyota uses modular-type parts for many of their cars, which brings down the cost. The 4.5L Twin turbo V8 is also used in the 70's series Landcruiser in a single turbo configuration and is known for its ability to go to ~500000klms with basic servicing. Unfortunately 200 series are so sought after in Australia, one with 200000klms still costs $70-80000AU depending on year/condition. Great cars.
I drive a 1991 Land Cruiser. It had been badly abused by previous owners, towing, salt water dips, poor maintenance, bolts missing, you name it, they tried to kill it. I have taken care of it for ten years and it is by a very long way, the best vehicle I have ever owned.
I also traded in my G550 for a Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser is far more comfortable, quiet, and reliable vehicle. I took a 3,500 mile road trip in it about a year ago and it didn't skip a beat. I put BF Goodrich KO2 tires on it and it can go pretty much anywhere now.
I have a Toyota 4WD and I absolutely love it. So well engineered and built. Yes, it drinks gas, but it’s a pleasure to drive every day and is great for adventure.
I’ve got an 04 Lexus GX in the garage and I feel the same way about it. The GX isn’t as posh as the LC but it shares a lot of the same ideas and hardware under the skin. There’s something very compelling about them and I still enjoy cruising around in it all these years later.
What a lovely dog! Great car, these things are bomb proof, the older 4.2 100 series are a bit better on fuel but tick all the same boxes, chassis can rot though as they don't leak oil and rust proof themselves!
Chris genuinely loves cars and that makes he's reviews honest and consumer useful. It's refreshing to see a Brit realize the truth about Toyota and say it with pride.
LC's have always been great. I had a 1990 HDJ80 4.2 in-line 6 turbo diesel. It was also a proper tank with a vast interior and great off-road and towing capabilities. Technology was aged but still a very strong 4x4 with a great personality. I miss it.
What a thoughtful, and well explained expose on a truly wonderful car. I have an 80 Series (1995), that was 280,000 miles (NOT KM) on her and she’s ready for 500,000 more. But, yes, she has never met a gas station she doesn’t like.
"A land rover will get you there. A Landcruiser will get you there and home again". They are talking about the Defender and 70 series. But the 200 series is still very reliable but much more comfortable.
I cant afford a v8 but i have orderd a prado with gvm upgrade. Everyone tells me they are over priced and the ford everest is better value.. but my second car is a 21 year old corolla which is a lovely old girl who refuses to fail..
I'm 30 seconds in and I already know this isn't long enough...

He did get the phrase wrong though "if you are going into the interior (oz outback) take a Patrol, if you want to come back take a Landy"
This is why Chris has always been a car guy. Been watching back when we had 480p
I just love Chris Harris videos. It is never long enough. Can listen to him ALL DAY.
I have a 97 Land Cruiser and I approve of this message.
Someone who likes cars reviews the flashiest new Ferrari (not that Harris doesn’t do this very well) but people who really love them as machines just GET this. Brilliant vid!
Couldnt agree more. Had one of these for 10+ years. Not a rattle, not a squeak. The embodiment of reliably and no-fuss understated luxury.
An LC200 is one of my dream cars, too bad the current price of LCs in Australia has priced me well out of the market
Please tell me how many liters for 100km
Thank you.
@@crispyinasia61 as a Toyota fan I feel so proud about your experience.
Love the last v8 gen of land cruises. They look timeless, bullet proof and to me rides like a rolls Royce even though I’ve never been in a rolls Royce
I have gone thru a 180 in life, ladder frame Japanese vehicles are the only thing I want to drive. And definitely in diesel, love the sound of it.
Chris is just the best car reviewer with the best filming to go with it ever imo.
They are the GOD TIER vehicles down under in Australia... they can cross the country without fail in comfort no matter what. awesome video.
Love the way he keeps the reviews very different every one’s doing hi end cars as a review nobody keeps it real the message is you don’t need to spend thousands to make you self happy anybody can have a nice new car, these days it’s not like it was when l was at school cars are not as special as they once was on the road and everyone is getting in to debt for something they can’t afford and doesn’t really make them truly happy because if it did they would keep it for ever and remember it or keep it until you really needed a new car l
Love to see a top gear show or a car show on older cars cars that was out of your price range but now in arms reach l think that’s what we need as times are getting harder also it saves the planet keep the reviews coming 👏🏾👍🏾👊🏽
Ah Walters Arena, many a muddy mile around that awesome motoring nirvana
Check Scotty Kilmer's youtube channel if you want the true, honest opinions on cars.
Best co-driver ever.
@@jeremyb4493 any dog is a great dog but bull terriers are extra lovely in nature. Sorry for your brother’s pup ♥️
“Keep your sporty SUV’s, because they are…………shite” 😂😂😂 Priceless and how true
Defiantly one of my top 5 dream cars
Mr Toyoda was a legend and built some awesome machinery. 👌
Waiting for Chris Harris' 11 min feature is worthwhile. Nothing like it. So refreshing,no background music needed.
In this video, Chris himself embodies the ethos of his Toyota - he’s very practical, and not very glamorous. Well done!
Agreed. I have a 2019 LC that will stay in my family forever. It goes anywhere and does everything comfortably.
This and every other Land Cruiser is legendary in Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 Everyone who can afford one has one
Great content, Chris! Land Cruisers are like red wine: Just getting better as they age.
A Land Cruiser is on the dream garage list for many South Africans (including me). A Land Cruiser and a GR Yaris is a great two car garage
Australia and Africa love the Land Cruiser.. No nonsense vehicles. Just pure awesomeness
UK has both the Prado and the Surf. Both are identical to your 4runner
I am the same, i started working in Nigeria a few years ago, 3/4 of the cars there are toyota. It seems its only the UK or Europe who are in the dark.
Since working here, i really want the 5.7L V8 Tundra. It's the pickup chassis to your 4runner
we have the land cruiser prado which is pretty much a 4runner with slightly different body panels and uglier front end design.
I would like to get a 200 series but i don't want to down grade from a 80 series lol
Engineering masterpiece!
Chris Harris, Legend. 200 series Landcruiser, Legend. Great film 👌
*Land Rover has left the chat*
Just bought a 2010 petrol 200 series! The most complete car ever made. Sports cars aside, it is the answer to every question here in Australia.
Chris the forest gnome… best car ever indeed!
I love it when Chris Harris shows us his personal cars and explains why he loves them
Chris, we need more journalists to do reviews like this, not about new cars, but older ones, maybe ones weve forgotten about, ones that revive memories for people. Excellent
I've been lucky to own a 2013 lc200... it's my daily driver, camper, gear hauler, I love this machine...
all day, every day with these. Others have already said it in the comments section, the best recent 10+ minute video on RUclips full stop.
This video should’ve been at least 3 times as long. I can listen to this man talk about cars for hours
My wife and I own three Land Cruisers. Love them.
I'd still say this is an underrated car. Love the LC, it's incredible! Even more tempted to get one now!
Great review, thanks Chris. I’ve got a 1997 80 series, 4.2 turbo diesel. Absolute beast of a machine and effortless in all it does.
I've had 1996 and sold it last year, I am still not sure why I did that..!!
Thank you for the such reviews. Love the way Chris explains everything honestly. Such content is as rare as sensible cars, like this Land cruiser
I love me some Chris Harris on (Collecting) Cars.
Best land cruiser review yet, and very helpful with the G Wagon comparison.
LC is a thing of beauty.
It's loveliness increases, it will never pass into nothingness.
We love our 200 series and have enjoyed the distant remote places that it takes us. Good video!
Chris genuinely loves cars and that makes he's reviews honest and consumer useful. It's refreshing to see a Brit realize the truth about Toyota and say it with pride.
On my forth Landcruiser after moving to Australia 20 years ago. Loads of heavy off road use use never missed a beat.
LC's have always been great. I had a 1990 HDJ80 4.2 in-line 6 turbo diesel. It was also a proper tank with a vast interior and great off-road and towing capabilities. Technology was aged but still a very strong 4x4 with a great personality. I miss it.
more chris, more pip, here for it all
The dog made it. Love Land Cruisers. Love Bullies. If ever there was a spirit animal for Chris it's that bully.
What a thoughtful, and well explained expose on a truly wonderful car. I have an 80 Series (1995), that was 280,000 miles (NOT KM) on her and she’s ready for 500,000 more. But, yes, she has never met a gas station she doesn’t like.
i have waited long enough for this video, thanks chris! Absolutely love the land cruiser and what it stands for!
"A land rover will get you there.
A Landcruiser will get you there and home again".
They are talking about the Defender and 70 series.
But the 200 series is still very reliable but much more comfortable.
It's a living legend. I had on for fourteen years on issues at all, ages like fine wine.
I always look forward to content that Chris is headlining
Chris you rock as well as the Land Cruiser 200 Diesel/Petrol V8! Thank you for making these informative and thorough videos. Cheers mate
I cant afford a v8 but i have orderd a prado with gvm upgrade. Everyone tells me they are over priced and the ford everest is better value.. but my second car is a 21 year old corolla which is a lovely old girl who refuses to fail..
