The Top 100 Video Games of all Time

- IGN's Top 100 games list encompasses the best of the best throughout history, spanning generations of consoles, PCs, handhelds, and more. Our list last saw a major update back in 2019, and since then, there have been several games released that deserved to be added. And just as importantly, we looked at the totality of the top 100 as it stood, and asked ourselves a few key questions, leading to some beloved games being dropped off, and other games we previously missed being added to the ranking.
Games added to our top 100 have to measure up to a few key metrics: how great a game it was when it launched, how fun it is to still play today, and how much any given game reflects the best in its class. While past versions of this list have put a big emphasis on a game's impact and influence, we've essentially taken that out of the equation, as many games that left a mark and inspired future developers may not stand the test of time and be all that fun to play right now. Or, quite simply, they may have been surpassed by other games.
You can head to IGN to check out the full list in exhaustive detail, and we encourage you to check it all out for more context. With all of that said, IGN's list reflects the current staff's opinions of what are the 100 best games of all time - a collection of games that have continued to captivate us with their stories, wow us with their revelatory approach to game design, and set the standards for the rest of the industry. One of my favourite things about watching games evolve is actually not the graphics though that itself is astounding, but how game design iterates over games, as game teams are inspired by totally separate genres take ideas and the best parts of one and incorporate it into their own which happens again and again and again as gradually a better game design language is formed.
My thoughts exactly and Nintendo happens to have been the company that invented the most genre's that still exist today better than ever.
An yet, the vast majority of games released today, despite having the luxury of tapping into 40+ years of videogame history and experience, are utter turds.
What happened to the other 90 games?

Also IGN: gives the game 9.5/10 instead of a 10/10 with no explanation
Making a list like this is always a nearly impossible task. It's so subjective and 100 seems like way to few to choose from when you start realizing just how many games there are.
Well it’s almost like they stated that this list is just an opinion. There will never be an objective “best of all time” list ever

Nintendo has made some questionable choices in the past years, but their impact on the industry is undeniable.
Lists like these are always subjective, but the argumentation is rock solid.
Questionable is almost an understatement.
@Garrus Vakarian Stupidity. The gameplay is nintendo's forté. They reinvent themselves all the times. Zelda and Mario are like this. So, you don't understand how gameplay works. Surely. Nor do you know what is the new concepts and mechanics they try to implement.
Questions like "the GameCube was more powerful than PS2 , but why Wii was less powerful than ps3 ? And then why was the WiiU much less powerful than the PS4 ? "
@@HediDev easy answer though. Nintendo was never focused on graphics or hardware power, but on innovation. The Wii pioneerd motion control gaming, while the WiiU (although a flop) introduced both onscreen and tablet gaming. Playstation has had the same formula for years, which allowed them to focus on hardware improvements. That made them compete with Xbox, but Nintendo was its own thing
Still think their newer games are way better than snes/64 ones.
Megaman 2, FFVII, Doom 2 are my top 3 games. With Megaman 2 being my personal favorite.

Beiing a hardcore Games owning every console and PC. In all my Life (being 38) a game never blew my mind like Half-Life Alyx. Its a revolution in every sense of the word. No other games can hold a candle to this experience. VR was a gimmick till it truly showed what immerson can be.

Is it me, or are more and more of these lists relegating Ocarina of Time to lesser positions? It's impact it virtually immeasurable and told gaming that immersive, scalable open-worlds could be achieved. The point about games achieving the 'crescendo' moment of their respective series' is entirely applicable to OoT. Gaming as a medium owes OoT a debt and seeing major publications forget that is somewhat disheartening.
Nah, there have been enough games that have built upon what it gave us and it is ok to be relegated. That doesn’t take away its relevance, but it won’t be always the greatest game ever.
It’s the allegory of the student surpassing the master, and it has been done.

@@NueThunderKing OoT's usage of symblosism just through subtext alone changed the dynamics of gaming forever. Botw surpasses with the new age of technology and gaming mechanics, but this was pushed to the envelope thanks to its ancestor. OoT's story is the best in the series, but Botw's open world gaming experience is the best in the series over this category.

Dark souls 1 not being top 10 is criminal. The amount of lore within the world, and the entire world structure itself is some of video games best

Halo 2 was and still is the greatest Halo game ever made
For sure with Skyrim. Over 10 years later and the game is still great
Halo 3 is literally the foundation to console online multiplayer today. Armor customization, CUSTOM GAME MODES, map editor , 4 player co op, theatre mode, skill based ranking system. It literally puts 90% of games in 2022 to shame and it was made in 2007.
My love for Skyrim his decline massively over the years sadly.

Oblivion, Halo 2, Banjo Kazooie, Vice City, Sega Gt 2002, Diddy Kong Racing, Snake Eater, Super Mario World, Smash Melee, Paper Mario 64
Super Mario Galaxy should have been in the place of Mario 64, it was less innovative but way more creative, polished to perfection and it plays so incredibly smoothly and has aged like fine wine, unlike 64 that's a lot more clunky to play nowadays.

Haven’t played BOTW, but according to their own description, what’s it done that nothing else has?
Don't get me wrong, BOTW is amazing and I'm like 1/4 through my play through, but it sounds like their totally biased for Nintendo.
BOTW is being called "Open-air" instead of Open world and that is something you will find out why once you play it. It became the inspiration of Genshin impact and Fenix immortal Rising by the way.
Not much tbh. It just moved Zelda to an open world setting. The game is great but not at all revolutionary and certainly not the greatest game of all time

The amount of copium from RDR2 fans is insane. Yes it's a masterpiece, but be glad it's even in the top 10. Some absolutely incredible games don't even make it that far, even if they deserve it.

just so overrated, as many others in this top 10/100. like honestly, breath of the wild greatest of all time, lol. imagine the fact that the majority of gamers are playing only on PC/consoles like PS/XBOX, not on nintendo switch or wii, like wtf. makes no sense. they didn't put any metro in the top 100, no age of empires, no racing game like NFSMW/Underground and so on. and how can some grown ppl that are supposed to be educated in gaming matters (IGN) can put Fortnite in top 100 best games of all time... such a joke top.

Yes! Definitely! BOTW is what the Original Zelda wanted to achieve. A truly open world, just waiting to be explored. Anyone can and should play this game.
