Hey there Jon, I’m a big fan of small stream Brookie fishing. Here’s some tips. Gear wise, especially in small streams with a lot of overhang, a 7.5 foot 3 or 2 wt is the way to go with 5x line. You definitely would benefit from a net as these fish tend to come off pretty easy (also helps to keep the fish in the net while you get pics) the prince nymph that you used seems appropriate but I wouldn’t be discouraged to throw things even a little smaller. Working up the stream is the best way to find and stay hidden from the fish, it’s hard work crawling up the boulders but it’s definitely worth.

Great video Jon! I’ve gotten into fly fishing these smaller streams here in NJ for wild trout and its my new favorite style of fishing. A recommendation that I have is running what’s called a dry dropper set up. It’s using a dry fly up top which the trout will eat but I also use as an indicator and then from that running a 16-18 inch leader (5.5-6x tippet) from the dry fly hook down to a nymph. It’s by far the most effective way I’ve found to catch these wild trout. Hope this helps!

I think this style is fishing is so cool because you get to have an obstacle course and small adventure while at it. I can see how fly fishing is an extremely challenging process in this environment and I've had my fair share of frustration getting caught in bushes and trees. I was almost going to cave and go with a BFS baitcaster system for stuff like this, easier casting, accurate but I just can't bring myself to step away from my fly fishing gear.
