What a great guide to follow along to, combining the mindset of creating missions with the very basics one needs to know to begin to further develop simple missions of your own :) I followed the instructions with some slight modifications, using a different map with a different flight path, but kept the majority of the concepts from your example. It was nice to be hand held through both simple and basic tools, as well as having a slight introduction to triggers, something which I've never had the energy to poke into before. I've played around in the editor for several hours now thanks to this video ^^ I assume this video was a one time thing, but it would probably make a great series. If you're ever in the mood to create more missions, perhaps consider recording the process. I assume I'm not the only one who would love watching you showcase new ideas for missions like convoy strikes, sam nets, pure air to air fights etc and show how to set up the triggers to make it happen, and keep mission interesting.
mackan072 thank you for the support I am glad you enjoyed it! Truth be told I am still learning about the mission editor and all the amazing features it has but I can certainly keep making videos on what I do know!
That was definitely my objective with this video! There are many videos that go into even more depth on the mission editor and definitely check those out, i am constantly learning how to do things!
It really just requires understanding the basics of it and then playing around a bit, if you have a baseline understanding of aviation terminology and how to game works it can be a lot of fun just playing with it. Volumes can be written about the Mission Editor and really have been most tutorials on youtube are like 10 part series with every part being 45+ minutes long! OH MY! I just wanted to give people the basics to be able to jump in and play around with it and run from there!
Thanks again, some of those other videos like you mentioned to me seem to be for the more advanced mission builders. This video is a good place to start for those that want to build missions. I'm about to build a mission now LOL.
Tip on placing an aircraft based on task. So, when you wanted to place the KC130 for refueling, I noticed that you were searching for the aircraft. To quickly see what aircraft can actually refuel...or accomplish the task: place the aircraft on the map (doesn't what is the default), then under the Task scroll down, select Refueling and then select the Type of aircraft. You will notice that only 4 aircraft are capable of conducting that task...a much smaller list to choose from :-) Applies to all the other Tasks as well.
Thanks man, I appreciate it!, I am glad to hear you're getting into DCS! It can definitely be daunting and I recommend just taking things in small chunks!
Hi, i'm french and i really want to thank you a lot for this tutorial ! I learn so much things but my english is not very good, you explain clearly much information of mission editor. Thank you again !
No problem man! I am glad you liked it and it helped you out, like I said you can go wayyyyyy more complicated as well as far more simple than what I did here. Feel free to share the video to anyone else you think it would be useful to
quick consise Perfect.. Thankyou sir for your time and effort put into this video. as a noob to DCS youve just made learning alot more fun interesting and easier to learn. Thankyou
Super great video, thank you so much. I really wish there were a LOT more DCS mission tutorials on RUclips. A lot of great channels do a couple here and there, but usually it is just the same basics. I'd be super interested if you were planning on doing a much larger, in-depth mission editor tutorial series, using these two parts as a jumping off point.
The tutorial video for the mission editor is very hard to find. Your video is very helpful and nicely for the novice gamer like me! Thank you very much.
I'm just getting into DCS after many years in Aces High....thanks for making this! If you're looking for video topics...voice comms would be great! (We're using Ventrilo since we can't figure it out!)
Very nice! Been using the editor for quite some time to learn modules but have had a bit trouble with triggers. This will surely help! Now on to the advanced stuff :-) /Wilbuz
You can use middle click as a ruler in the current versions of dcs by placing the cursor over the aircraft, waypoint or other area of interest then holding middle click and dragging the cursor over where you want to measure to.
I'm still trying to air to air refueling I just turned 99 flight hrs. In my logbook. But I have 0 air to air refuels. I'm on the east coast side of the US. I usually fly when I get home from work.
How did you change the mission editor builder unit from meters to feet? By the way, what about flite editor? Gives you a personal knee board about the mission you created? Tks
Amazing guide, I had no idea the mission editor was so powerful. Thanks for making this video guide. Edit* I was wondering seeing as you know what you're talking about, When i set a quick mission for the Harrier, Literally player Harrier at Kobuleti airport with a few ground targets at the nearby unused Kobuleti airstrip.. When i load into the scenario and cold start my Harrier i end up with very very limited symbology on the HUD, No pitch marker lines etc. If i HOT start then the full symbology is showing, So my question is have you come across this problem and know of a solution ?. Thanks in advance.
I'm not able to change paint schemes for M-2000C once I've created a mission . I must be missing something. can someone Please help. Otherwise I do pretty good in creating simple missions to practice with. your help will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Spudknocker, I watched your video and being a newcomer to DCS myself, I have tried to fly a SEAD mission with fansong radars defending a target, but whenever I enter the area the target is in, the fansong never seems to pick me up and activate the SAM sites so that they fire at me. Is there a way to activate the SAM sites to fire upon the player once he or she enters the target area to attack their designated target?
You need to make sure that an SA-2 site has a PR-19 Spoonrest, Fansong and launcers all within the same vehicle group and all within 200ish yrds from each other
How do i do a delay ai startup I started at ramp , checked uncontrolled. Triggers once mission start and actions time more. O and the start thing that is under the payload is there. Still no startup for ai at 2 min. Is there a certain Order. I’ve been pulling my hair out lol
are your coalitions set so that one nation is the bad guys or the good guys? Also if you want to place a sam site you have to have all the components for it to work like for a hawk battery or an SA-3 battery you need to have the search radar, tracking radar, and guidance radar plus the launchers. Also if a vehicle's skill is very low they take awhile to acquire a target and engage
racetrack pattern is an option when you have at least one waypoint beyond the place where you want the racetrack pattern to start e.g. if you had a single waypoint for a tanker, you could only tell it to fly in a circle around Waypoint 1. if you have a Waypoint 2, you can tell it to start a racetrack from Waypoint 1, and it uses (I believe) the 2nd waypoint to define how long the racetrack pattern is. hope that makes sense!
@@Spudknocker I might not have the clearest monitor but you surface wind setting indicates westerly at 11kts. For an easterly departure that's a tailwind.
you can cheese your mission by telling your wingman (preferably #2 because he's less skilled) to just stay at base, and then 'all of group in zone' will never trigger. you want any of group, or even better, any of coalition. iran would send interceptors regardless of who came into that airspace. You said you can add vehicles and airdefenses as static objects. I'm pretty sure a 'static object' is just a 3d asset. basically if you put a static t-50 there it's a rubber tank. it will not move, it will not shoot. and it even just has a tiny amount of health. and even though air defenses like a zu23 emplacements are static in that they don't move, you want to add them as a unit so that they actually have health, ai and something to shoot at you with. it is worth noting that if you want to place sam sites you need to group the vehicles that make up the sam system (i.e. search radar, tracking radar, launcher, command and control), and you need each one of them for them to work correctly. some sams may be able to use the tracking radar or some backup search radar on the CC but it's always better to just use the intended combination and let the ai figure things out when they actually loose something.
I was trying to set up a mission with the F-18 on a carrier, so I put the Stennis in the water and I then chose an F-18 , but when I tried to set it as take off from runway, it put me on the nearest island with a runway. How do I set up a plane for a carrier take off?
Thanks, I went back and found out for some reason it listed them (my F-18's) as an enemy, I forgot to ensure they were the good guys, my bad, thanks for the help!

Brilliant tutorial, created an awesome mission in 3 odd hours thanks, just have to find away to make a few things randomly and surprisingly spawn, so as not to expect the migs over the next rise:) don't know if this is possible though.
Need to turn off the horrible F/A-18 music. It's a catastrophically bad song and is incredibly distracting background noise. Makes following the tutorial difficult.
I turned the volume way down, sorry its not enough for you. I figured it would be better than total silence... I know the Hornet theme music isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think its grown on me a bit.
LOL yes thank you, seeing as the Kuwait isn't on the Persian Gulf map and the F/A-18C was brand new at the making of this video I wanted to have the jet in the video. So taking off from the United Arab Eremites was my only option. When we get an F-16 in DCS we will have an airframe that is an Organic part of the UAEAF, even though we are not getting the correct model.

Gotta say, this is a terrible map. It's really just the straits of Hormuz. Lots of gulf, not much land. Fine for naval battles I guess. But without Kuwait or a bigger chunk of Iran (They do have some area without mountains..) or the Arabian peninsula, there just isn't much to work with.
You just saved me several hours of trial and error

I give an example in the Trigger zone. I want AWACS to be rtb when the mission is over. How can I find the (ID) numbers in the Tirgger Zone?
Nice work as always
Great video. I had no idea about trigger zones. This will really help me. One note, think you had the wind coming from the west and not the east.

How did you change the mission editor builder unit from meters to feet? By the way, what about flite editor? Gives you a personal knee board about the mission you created? Tks

What about trigger zones for the SAMs'air defence units you placed on the enemy base?
There are no trigger zones required, they scan and engage threats as required and dictated by their ROE
