    Translation from Sumerian:
    'We are heart
    We are mind
    We are spirit
    From the raging storm, we bring the power of the primeval one.'
    Apparently it's a variation on a real ancient Sumerian spell calling on Enlil, king of all the gods.

    I think the underwhelming arc of the season is explained by the changes that writers had to make on the fly. Originally Maggie Walsh was the big bad for the season, with Adam as a tool/minion, but the actress had another opportunity come up she wanted to take, so she was written out. Then you have the arc that should have lasted much of the season with Oz and Veruca, but Oz wanted to do his Austin Powers: the Spy who Shagged Me part, so he gets written out and the whole arc condensed into a couple of episodes. I think those two elements could have provided a more unifying feel throughout the course of the season than what actually happened. I do think that as a season arc, Season 4 is the weakest, but as a collection of episodes it has some of the best standalones with the Faith episodes, Hush, the finale you will get to next. So it is a weird season, but onto Season 5, which has one of the best all season arcs, at least in my opinion.

    • @goldenageofdinosaurs7192

      Yeah, I’ve always felt that season 4 had a lot of potential, but never quite reached it. Season 4 contains a lot of iconic episodes, but the season as a whole never progressed like it should have.

      I think it has some of the best stand-alone episodes but I disagree that it's the best season. Thematically it falls apart because of the changes they had to make on the fly but it's still a really good season with amazing character moments.

    • @nicoleb1581
      @nicoleb1581 2 года назад +2

      Season 4 & 5 are my favorite ones. S4 surprised me because it really could have not worked. So many elements of the show changed (like transitioning from HS to college). I don’t even care that the storyline changed on the fly. So maybe the big bad storyline was weak but the character growth took center stage when you look at the season as a whole. They grew independently of each other which makes the whole rest of its run work on another level. It went from a teenage show to a adult show pretty flawlessly. Not many shows make that shift successfully

      Shan was also my first. I never imagined I'd have any desire to watch someone watching a show. But she happened to pop up in my recommendations during a time when I was bored and had nothing better to do. It wasn't even a Buffy episode. The first one I saw was Firefly's Our Mrs Reynolds. Then of course when I saw that she was also reacting to Buffy, I binged those to catch up. I'm still rather selective about which reactors I follow, but there are a few including SoFie of course.

    I feel exactly the same, you summed it up nicely. This season was hobbled by the exit of both Seth Green and Lindsey Crouse so they had to make do with what they had. That's why we had a filler episode like 'The Yoko Factor' which plot-wise is totally pointless, Spike divides the Scoobies at Adam's order only now to be accused of screwing up so he undoes it.
    Yes the main plot wasn't the greatest, they'd already covered the Frankenstein idea but as you said the quality of the episodes is very high, some of the show's best. Next season is the ultimate I think. As for next episode you might want to smoke a joint first, not that I'd give such advice to anyone.

    I'm glad that the behaviour modifying chip isn't in Riley anymore. Imagine how heartbreaking it is that the women he respected would try to control him like this. She was to him what Giles is to Buffy. Nobody should be controlled like that, well maybe it's useful when stopping soulless vampires like Spike.

    Love that there is one more episode left because this is the first time that Buffy has done this in four seasons, wrapped up the main battle vs the big bad and had a surprise for the finale. As far as Adam goes, he is imo the most underwhelming big bad so far, but it's hard to measure up to the Mayor and Angelus. I do think that overall season 4 had some strong episodes and character development which balanced everything out. Season 5 they ramp it up to 11 again, just wait and see :-)

    I love reaction viewers thinking wait what's the next episode.
    People always talk about the underwhelming arc of the Initiative this season season, but the point of the arc of the season was spot on. Which was the Scoobies struggles to keep the high school gang together in their college (and in Xander's case, his working) life that is the point of the season. It was done perfectly. The Initiative, as the crew said, "was never the point of the season." It was the way to set people, themes and storylines up.
    Not all reaction viewers react to Forests' love for Riley, but I enjoy it when they do. Forest wanting Riley in a romantic and/or sexual sense is a head canon that is, as far as I'm concerned, official canon. Too bad it will never be confirmed.

      Largely considered the worst season by whom? Seasons 6 and 7 are the ones that I most frequently hear cited as the worst. I'd never heard *anyone* cite S4 as their least favorite before I started reading RUclips comments, although I don't think I've ever heard anyone cite it as their favorite either.
      Maybe this is a more recent trend? I've definitely noticed that a lot of what seems to be the "common wisdom" about individual episodes now is *strikingly* different from the consensus that I remember from the late '90s and early aughts.

    S4 was always going to be slightly difficult because The High School years were over, and the show had to find a new direction. Overall it was disappointing compared to other Seasons and felt somewhat disjointed. Adam, even wasn't really a 'Big Bad' compared with the arc of other seasons. That being said, this was an entertaining episode with the big fight towards the end reminiscent of a Bond Film, with lots of people in a massive big fight in a complex with all sorts of weapons etc. We Willow again gaining amazing power, and being able to transfer to Buffy to make her invincible, there were shades here of The Matrix with the slow motion shots and the strange deflection of Adam's attacks. Riley shows great courage to remove the chip from his chest, and when Buffy pulls out Adam's power source we get a great sense of satisfaction. Don't worry Sofie about E22 finale for S4 It's very different, but an essential episode going forward.

    • @NachoTaco207
      @NachoTaco207 2 года назад +1

      I think it's very fitting in a way. The college years, especially the first year after high school, can feel disjointed and disorienting. Another reason I still love this season - it probably has the biggest selection of light hearted episodes. There are some tough moments in season 4, but overall, our core group gets a chance to have fun and grow up. Something that you can look back on wistfully once you get to season 5 and onward.

    • @killianlpc
      @killianlpc 2 года назад

      @@NachoTaco207 There were some brilliant stand alone episodes Something Blue, Hush, Restless, but overall it was so disjointed compared to the other seasons. All the other seasons had a definite arc, this one had Adam who was the worse Big Bad of the whole show. I know they lost Seth Green and Lindsey Crouse due to other commitments and aspirations, maybe this affected the Season too. Again some great episodes but I would rate this season second last in the show overall. It's just a matter of opinion.

  • @ferrisulf
    @ferrisulf 2 года назад +1

    I'm very glad this isn't the season finale. Adam was an underwhelming villain. Unfortunately, the actress who played Walsh wanted out and so they had to scramble to come up with a new storyline halfway through the season. So you see how we ended up with Adam. The season has phenomenal wrap up. And then on to season 5!!! (I like Graham as well. He made it out!)

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 2 года назад +1

      The real problem is that Adam isn't properly constructed as a villain at all. For most of the season, he's a literary double, and in that role, he works *really* well. It's only when they start trying to shoe-horn him into a different role that he stops making much sense. If they'd only accepted that the season's villain wasn't going to be something you could punch, they would have been much better off. They faltered by underestimating their audience, IMO.

    0:38 No, it's not that she likes Forrest, it's that she thinks Forrest sees Riley as more then just a friend and comrade. I'm not sure Forriley was intended but it explains a lot.
    The season Finale is a little bit 'different'. I'd like to say more, but we don't want spoilers.
    Walsh and the initiative were meant to be the 'big bad' for the whole season, but the actress wanted to leave, so they had to re-work it. This is why the defeat of Adam seemed a little lacklustre, he wasn't supposed to be the whole of the big bad.
