    Man this video is a treat. Five years hard labour reduced to a 12m bullet. 'Best of' lists like this are goldmines of inspiration for fellow movie lovers, so thanks for that. My score is pretty well split. I've seen 25. Own about another 25 (yet to see). And of the remaining 50, I've heard of about half of them. . So many films to respond to - Sunrise is my favourite silent movie and Cottage In Dartmoor is my favourite British silent movie.. I've seen all the Westerns apart from The Great Silence (which i'm holding back on until the perfect bleak winter's day).. Lots there on my watchlist that will now get bumped-up, thanks to the thumbs-up. Eg - The Whisperers, Robbery, Never Let Go, We are the Lambeth Boys, Tiger Bay also Cactus Flower and Targets (which has been knocking around on VHS for 23 years, still unseen). My film knowledge drops off a little in the 21st century so plenty of new titles there for me to explore as well.....Cheers, grand job there.
    (p.s. don't know if you do requests, but in December it could be fun to see what everyone on this channels' 'top ten first-time viewings of 2024' were? Just a thought :)

      Hi. Thanks very much. In this big RUclips world I’m grateful if people find and watch my videos but it lifts my spirits even more when people know of the movies I’m talking about or are at least curious to discover them. Very glad to hear you love A Cottage in Dartmoor. I have just picked up Asquith’s first silent movie, Shooting Stars, which I’m looking forward to. A bleak winter’s day will be a great time for your first watch of The Great Silence. All the films you mention for adding to your watchlist resonate with me not just because I think they are good but also because they link in with other movies or subjects that interest me. I hope you enjoy them when you get to them….Last year I did a top 35 first time watches for 2023 so some of those feature in this video. I may have to do a different kind of round up video for 2024 as this video already includes some favorite first time watches. Many thanks for your comments. Have a good weekend

    Wow. Every time I watch one of your videos you show me movies I have never heard of. Always adding to my watch list. Out of the 100 you shown I have only seen Kajaki(aka Kilo Two Bravo), The Blob, Cactus Flower, The Grey Fox and Speed Racer

      Hi. Thanks for watching. Oh yes, if you’re a Mills fan then definitely The Long Memory is of interest as he plays quite an embittered character. Some great London locations too. I also mentioned Tiger Bay, with young Hayley Mills starring with him too, love that one also

    I actually bought the Blu-Ray of Company from my local branch of HMV in their criterion collection sale just last week, Neil. (My amateur operatic company performed the show in the spring this year.)

      Hi Ian. Ah, that’s interesting. I would think that particularly as you have experience with performing the show then you might get even more enjoyment out of the film than I did. Such difficult songs to master, I found watching the rehearsal process really fascinating…and exhausting for the cast, who showed such dedication to getting it just right. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching and commenting

    Wow, what a great video. So many here that I’ve not seen and quite a few I’ve not even heard of. I’m particularly intrigued by Christo In Paris & The Gates. Kalatozov’s two films and Naked Island would certainly be in my favourites of the last 5 years.

      Hi Steve. Thanks very much. I thought the idea of artists wrapping buildings and locations in vast amounts of fabric was ridiculous until I watched the Maysles Brothers documentaries and then Christo’s vision and enthusiasm became so infectious and understandable. I really love these films now….And talking of Kalatozov, I have just this evening watched I Am Cuba for the first time. Jaw-dropping filmmaking and another instant favourite

    There were very many here I've not seen. The sixteen I have seen are: 'Come and See', 'The Cranes are Flying', 'Kuroneko', 'Onibaba', 'Close-up', 'Sunrise', 'Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles', 'Sansho the Bailiff', 'Ménilmontant', 'La belle noiseuse', 'The Lusty Men', 'Harakiri', 'Wings', 'The Grey Fox', 'Targets', and 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?'. Of these, my favorite and to my mind the most significant purely as a work of art is 'Harakiri', easily one of the greatest films ever made and likely the single most powerful samurai film of all time. I don't understand why director Masaki Kobayashi is not more widely celebrated as one of the true masters of cinema.

    • @neilsmoviechannel3199
      @neilsmoviechannel3199  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Barry. Great to hear you have seen those ones. Although I don’t recall any Kobayashi movies being on TV when I was younger, I’ve got no excuses for not having seen more now. Embarrassing it has taken me until recent years to see HaraKiri and I still have The Human Condition to watch! I do think those two films in particular are highly regarded nowadays (as well as Kwaidan and Samurai Rebellion) but yes, you don’t hear his name mentioned nearly enough

    • @barrymoore4470
      @barrymoore4470 Месяц назад

      @@neilsmoviechannel3199 Apart from 'Harakiri', I've seen 'Kwaidan' and 'Samurai Rebellion', with 'The Human Condition' remaining a major gap in my cinematic education (the late film historian David Shipman regarded that three-part epic as the greatest achievement in movie history). But even the three Kobayashi features I have seen convince me that he is one of the truly great filmmakers. Incidentally, I was lucky enough to see 'Kwaidan' and 'Samurai Rebellion' in 35-millimeter projection at repertory screenings, the beauty of 'Kwaidan' in particular being enhanced by that original format.

    Hi Neil, A fascinating bunch of movies. Of which I only own 6. But have seen 10. They are my type too. But never find them when out looking for good deals. I suspect these are mostly higher priced movies. You have lots of foreign films and I really enjoy international movies a whole lot. I enjoyed this video! Have a good weekend!

    What a great video, only 9 in my collection, good to see two Hammer films and one of them covering a very difficult and disturbing subject. You have a lot of World Cinema titles which i feel i should investigate and check out. Really enjoy seeing your love of film which I totally understand.

    • @neilsmoviechannel3199
      @neilsmoviechannel3199  Месяц назад +1

      “By ‘eck!” Thanks for watching, Ian, very kind. Yes, although those two Hammers are certainly atypical of the studio, they’re ones that have really thrilled me. I don’t want to preach and there are still huge gaps in my world cinema knowledge but I think exploring all types of cinema is absolutely vital for anyone who loves movies. So if any of these pique anyone’s interest at all, then that’s great. Thanks for commenting

    Hi Neil,great video. I enjoyed that. I think I did not too bad with 19 watched. There's quite a few on my radar. I really want to see Jeanne Dielman after it topped the poll a couple of years ago but it's very difficult to get a copy over here.

    I have only seen 12 out of your hundred with And Soon The Darkness being one that I watched recently as I bought it in the Kino Lorber sale. I thought it was very well done. I do have Queen of Spades and The Day The Earth Caught fire on DVD but have not watched them yet. You showed several thrillers that really piqued my interest, among them Tiger Bay and The Whisperers.

      @@neilsmoviechannel3199 I absolutely loved Speed Racer. It was fun and totally visually amazing. And I have not seen Jeanne Dieiman. The one I hated so was Margaret. I found everyone in that film incredibly unlikeable, being either cruel or a total fool. There was no one to identify with or feel for and it seemed to just plod on for an eternity.

    • @neilsmoviechannel3199
      @neilsmoviechannel3199  Месяц назад

      @ Ahh, Margaret yes. Funnily enough that was the one title I thought about swapping for another to mention as, although I rated it very highly at the time, my recollection of it now isn’t as strong as most of the others. I know I saw the extended cut on the Criterion Channel, which I gather was better than the theatrical release. Glad to hear you liked Speed Racer.
