One small detail I liked in Nope is how at the beginning you see Keke's character say the Muybridge speech. She says "This man was my great-great-great grandfather" and Edward Kaluuya adds the one "great" she missed. Later in the film you see a video of their father doing the exact speech she did at the beginning of the film. She missed one "great" because she knew the speech by heart from hearing her father say it all the time.

I also think it implies that she's just repeating what she wants to be true and may truly not. I saw some birdbrained take by E;R mention that it could have been just that the Muybridge film just didn't accurately capture skin tone. The point being that media strips you of everything you think unique and replaces it with trauma. The electric cyclist is even named 'Ryder Muybridge' and is played by a white man.

The Brokeback Mountain discussion meant a lot to me. I was raised by really homophobic parents and was 14 or so when the movie came out. I watched and then resented it for a long time just because its characters were very beautiful men and I always felt ugly, and due to my particular psychology/circumstances felt alienated from the gay community due to not fitting a physical stereotype. Plus the fact that it’s a tragedy made it too hard for me to watch, given the homophobic filth that my parents talked to me from a very young age. I remember watching a Rock Hudson movie with my dad and when his name came up in the credits my dad pointed and said “he died because he was sucking other men’s willies.”
The discussion in this episode clarified for me a lot of what’s stupid and harmful about homophobia, and convinced me to give the film another shot sometime.
    So thanks, guys!

I decided to watch _Brokeback Mountain_ for the first time after hearing that Sardonicast was set to review it. I'd heard about it for years at the Catholic school I went to as the "gay cowboy movie" without knowing anything else about it. I found it to be very touching and thoughtful, and I agree wholeheartedly with everything Adam and co. had to say. It upset me a lot more than I was expecting, particularly that flashback scene where Heath Ledger's character (as a kid) sees the mutilated corpse. No one should have to live their life like that. It isn't right. It isn't human.

    NOPE SPOILER:
Jup (Steven Yuen) had been using the horses that OJ had been selling to feed Jean Jacket for 3-6 months before the events of the movie. OJ sees him practicing the show in the distance when he goes after the white horse that ran away. Jup had been doing it every Friday and on the debut show everything went wrong because Lucky wouldn’t run. Just contributes to Jup’s overall hubris and misunderstanding of his connection with nature and the “bad miracles” around him.

I really hope Adam gives Better Call Saul a second chance. I understand that "it gets good after _____" is a bad argument, but I think after maybe the halfway point of season 1 there are a TON of things Adam would really appreciate about this show, and it might change his perspective about the early first season a bit.
It seems like the show was still trying to find the right tone early on, but by the episode "Five-O" it really figured out what the rest of the series is gonna be from then on, and it only gets better.
It would make for a decent watch along at least.

In my hometown, the regular theaters wouldn't play "Brokeback Mountain", it was only playing at the independent theater. This was in California, which shockingly voted "Yes" on Prop 8 just 3 years later (an anti-marriage equality bill). I was in high school, and a friend and I asked a parent to take us, and they kind of treated it as a novelty--and they weren't expecting it to be tragic, so they were kind of annoyed leaving the theater. I was still mostly closeted at the time, so I couldn't really express my honest feelings about it--but I remember finding it mostly boring because I was a dumb 15 year old, and couldn't appreciate what it was actually trying to say. Our primary exposure to gay media at that point was yaoi and BL manga, if that puts it in perspective lmao

I thought Ethan Hawke being a pervert in the black phone was really obvious. It was to the point i was afraid they were going to show some kind of exploitative creepy child molestation as a flashback. After they showed the daughter getting beaten in the first act, I was worried about the child suffering on screen escalating.
Ethan Hawke says to Finn “I wont do anything to you, you wont like.” One of the boys on the phone says something about Ethan Hawke killing is soul before he killed his body. Of all things the only piece of furniture in the basement is a dirty mattress… The looming sexual assault felt like the horror to me. It’s interesting to hear that some people didn’t notice that at all.

I feel like the cinematographer’s motivation for getting sucked up ultimately came down to what the movie says about spectacle.
He’s being presented with the opportunity for the shot of a lifetime and how even if the world doesn’t know that he got the shot or will even be able to see it, HE knows he got it and that’s enough for him, he doesn’t care if he dies as long as he dies getting the impossible shot.

There's a weird obsession with numbers with Yeun's character. He says the mayhem on set lasted for 6 minutes and 13 seconds, and the time when he feeds the alien is at 6:13PM. It could be him just wanting everything to be connected with his experience on the set - that he believes that he survived because of a miracle, so using same methods with the alien would work, too. But, he only survived because he wasn't in sight of the monkey and didn't look at him until he calmed down.
The shoe could be that "bad miracle" they speak of. It was just standing that way and it was something he could focus on, on the set, while all this horror was happening around him. So, he displays it as a miracle on set, but then the - excuse the pun - other shoe drops when he misinterprets what happened to him, gets cocky and ends up dying by what he thought he could control.
Just some rambling thoughts I had when I saw it last week, loved it!

Also, this might be a stretch but 6 minutes and 13 seconds, aka 373 seconds, the number 373 is an angel number telling that "The ascended master is on the right path", as in angel tells you that "you're on the right path"
I think this kinda fits with Yeun's character and story considering that he genuinely believed that he was the chosen one because he survived that incident thus having the belief that he can tame the untameable.

When watching Nope I kind of noticed a strong theme of certain means exploitation media industry. You have the animals that aren't well treated (while we don't see it as much with the ape, we do see with the horses how the people on the set use a mirror despite being told not to do so, as well as not giving them a break when Kaluuya's character says they need one). On top of that you have the kids, who are both harmed by their experience on the show (Yeun mentally so whereas his costar is left deformed by the accident), as well as the "smaller people" i.e. Kaluuya's character, who is tossed to the side when something happens to a big name, despite it happening only due to others going against his instructions.
Adam's point about Yeun referring to it as "the viewers" is something I haven't picked up on but is possibly even more strengthening on my theory, as the viewer is at the end of the day supporting the system that causes these harms.
This can be additionally strengthened by the fact that the photographer, driven to get the perfect shot at risk to his own safety, meets his demise also by means of attempting to engage with media beyond what is healthy.

At the beginning, it was OJ who got sick of the film industry and want to be get done with it maybe due to father's death (As in selling horses), where as Emmerald was the one who wanted to be the center of attention as in doing PR of herself on film set and providing the idea of alien footage to tv show.
However as the movie went along, especially after they find out more about the alien and escaped to the tv store guy house, it was Emmerald who was now done with the alien and wanted to escape from it, whereas OJ wanted to come back to where alien is. At one point she refuses the interview by the TMZ reporter as well.
At the last scene, Emmerald was able to take a picture of the alien and destroy the alien. With polices standing outside the festival site you can say she have now become the center of attention as she always wanted to be, but her main focus was on her brother OJ coming back with Lucky like a main character of the western movie (This could might be a reference to that scene where in the past Emmerald was supposed to tame the horse but OJ tamed it and Emmerald had to just view it from the outside)
This might be a play on western genre or a message about how males and females are treated in media (this might be a stretch) but I find the dynamic really entertaining and interesting.

It’s a shame the Sards don’t want to give it a shot, but it’s a bigger shame they basically wrote off all the review scores as compromised, considering the western audience generally seems to love it as much as if not more than the Indian audience, including some of their colleagues (ex. Joel Haver, Schaffrillas, Marcus, the three of whom gave it 5/5, and probably others). Like if I said “I don’t like anime so I don’t think I need to watch Akira for my 1988 list, anime lovers are inflating the scores”, that would just be kind of sad. I find it funny that you guys don't want to watch RRR. Personally, I loved it, but I respect your decision, mostly because I don't think it would give us an interesting discussion. I've seen it being compared to superhero films, and I wholeheartedly agree! It's like a super over-the-top superhero film, but one I like. It's zany, kitsch, over the top and an overall good popcorn film to watch with friends. The action sequences are pretty creative in a fantastic kind of way. I recommend it, but understand why you're skipping it. The title sequences are enormous, but I appreciated all the focus on the special effects house and people like the stunt coordinator. These are a big part of the film and should get their own spotlight. I wonder if they're treated better in India vs the west.
Also, I loved Nope. It's light but dense, silly but serious, I think it hits a perfect balance of interesting but still commercial. I loved the non-overt black culture representation, it was shown in such a creative way and I hope we get more of it (which I think we are in the current film landscape).

This may sound like a reach, but I think it’s really about the life of Hollywood celebrities, particularly in this case, black actors and their everyday struggles of dealing with paparazzis.
Sometimes we forget that celebrities are also normal people just like us. People treat them either as gods, emotionless robots or wild animals. We see their lives as spectacle and how we invade their personal spaces whenever they’re in the middle of a controversy. Then we criticise them when they react violently in front of the camera.
OJ, - like the UFO, is introverted, reserved and shy to be in front of the camera.
The UFO, - like any other celebrities, doesn’t like being watched (or looked at) all the time by some intrusive cameras whenever they step outside their mansions or “clouds”.
Jupe - is one of those celebrities that went through childhood trauma that became a national spectacle, so much that people literally go to his place to take pictures with him and memorabilias of the incident. People even paid him to revisit that god-awful day.
Horses - I think they represent the public opinion like Twitter threads, comments, headlines etc. that bait a person to come out and say something back to defend themselves. This bait of course serves no real purpose but for clicks and more attacks.

For what it’s worth, I think part of the reason why some movies tend to be longer these days is this:
I feel that a lot of audiences have more or less seen it all and tend to be pretty jaded, so in order to really do something that an audience hasn’t seen before, you sort of have to come up with a really wild concept.
If you’re making a movie with a really wild, out there concept (Everything Everywhere All At Once, for instance), and it’s not a movie that’s part of an established franchise and isn’t guaranteed a sequel, you a.) have to set up the concept and its rules within the confines of the story you’re telling and b.) give the concept adequate time to really sing and show you things you haven’t seen without it feeling like a cool opportunity has been missed.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was long to be sure, but it needed that time to do A and B. If you’re talking about standing out in the mind of an audience, sometimes it’s either be longer to give the audience something they haven’t seen before while weaving it into a proper story, or take an hour and a half to tell a story that’s already been told a thousand times before.

I worked on a tv show just recently where we had some horses on an outdoor set for a few days and it annoyed me now nobody I'm Nope respected the horses (even though they were written that way). I guess OJ could've done his section of the safety meeting better to tell people not to mess with the horse but it's for the story. I loved the film I don't wanna make it seem like I didn't like the film I just wanted to say that the film crew in Nope were assholes

Oh don't worry. New TVs are screwed up for gaming as well, especially if you have multiple consoles from different console gens. The smart tvs will screw with settings a lot of the time

aspects i realized while watching the film is that the design of the alien in Nope changes multiple times and represents multiple things, as adam states in one design its mouth is similar to that of a film camera. its early base form can be likened to an eyeball. Even still its a small black eyeball similar to that of a chimps eye which the jupe alien kid design incorporates with his back story. Later on it expands and reaches out into the sky and actually takes a form that looks very close to biblical accurate angels with multiple wings and what feature do biblical accurate angels have...big massive eye. Side note with my first viewing i thought at first the design of the alien looked like a big cowboy hate with the hole in the middle being where you put your head...which could also work given the western cowboy themes.

Probably there's a comment on this, but he was practicing at night before with horses. We see it early on from a HUGE distance before the alien shows up and eats. It was a small scene so, easy to forget.

Funny how the briefly compared the black phone to a Stephen king story. When the short story was written by Joe hill, AKA Joe hillstrom king. His son.

I haven't seen RRR but I've been hearing about it from like a bunch of podcasts and stuff like that. Mostly positive stuff. I haven't noticed that from any other Bollywood movies. Seems like it's more than just imdb/letterboxd inflating.

I just want to acknowledge how Adum is honestly a lot more strong a person then I had already thought, hes is someone who at first glance, had me believing was equipped with an uncommon or rare upgraded epidermis layer of tough material for a slight increase to verbal, emotional, mental, and some physical defense. This was before hearing what I heard today, and I already had great respect for Adum, *****can't go without saying the fact that i hold much respect for Ralph and Alex too***** but today Adum is someone who I think is deserving of some recognition for that legendary gear he forged and equipped growing up giving him all the defenses mentioned before, but also imbued with super deflecting teflon and some added points into all stats with additional points to charm and idgaf. I dont think I could be half the dude he is today, such a good guy with a strong drive, who consistently expresses positive outlooks and viewpoints despite experiencing as he was growing up (when we are most impressionable) being told what would be For ME such soul-crushing, life and character development altering, self-esteem halting, and depression producing garbage opinions of family members of his friends, I sure wouldn't be surprised if also spewed out from other losers. Even dealing and enduring together along with his boyfriend and the pointless, ignorant, and hate-filled views of his family, its unimaginably unfair needing to walk on eggshells where and whenver family is near, especially in the year that we are in today, we're supposed to be better by now. The fact im trying to say is that It's hella admirable that no matter what, it seems Adum was and still is true to himself and who he is. Even growing up when the world we experieced was much more impactful and left marks instilled in us who we developed to be, molded by the things we were told, saw, smelled, and felt. I know it must of been a rollercoaster of life experiences and I'm just glad to know you're here with us internet strangers, along with Ralph and Alex, providing us all with enjoyable content that lets me forget for a little while how shitty it is outside and chill out reducing some stress. thanks guys

Out of all the critics I just knew Adam would tear Nope to shreds. I’m shocked that he liked it. It has so many things where the more you think about it the less sense it makes.
Like Antlers brings an analog camera and Emerald is stoked that he brought says “I told you he would bring it!” Of course he would bring it. What other purpose would there be for having him? They’re talking on the film with him and in hindsight the entire conversation should have been about whether or not he has an analog camera and can he bring it because that’s the only way they could have filmed it.
They using flailing tube men that explicitly look like big colorful flags in the intricate trap after they establish that the thing is wary of colorful flags. You think it would just say nope and go nowhere near them and so the tube mens function of signaling that its near by would be pointless. The thing is incredibly fast but now he’s outracing it on his horse? Why does it seem to be mesmerized by him at the end? Why doesn’t it just suck him up like its been doing because He’s explicitly looking at it. Why did they steal car engines from an active crime scene? They have a Fry guy and he doesn’t have access to any other suitable batteries?
Was Jupe planning to kill everyone because there was no way he could have encountered the thing multiple times without knowing that you can’t look at it. And if so his plan to show it off to a crowd of people that includes his wife and children and the only other survivor of the chimp attack doesn’t make sense.
