Taipan X .223 Pump Action / Straight Pull

- Quick rundown on the Australian made Taipan X .223 Pump action / Straight pull.
This model has a few upgrades over its predecessor, the Taipan Lite.
In this video I go over the new modifications and then send some rounds downrange.
Range testing yielded 1/2" groups at 50m and sub moa at 100m. Quite impressive out of the 16.5" barrel. I was shooting 55gr SBK Adi World class factory ammunition.
Overall this rifle will come into its own in scenarios where quick follow up shots are required on multiple targets such as mobs of pigs. The Taipan X is well balanced even with a suppressor hanging off the end of it. N.B ( I am licensed for suppressor use in NSW for all my contract work)
Features:
* Nice and compact rifle sporting a 16.5" threaded barrel
* Overall weight of 2.9kg
* 1 in 8 twist rate allowing the shooter to run heavier projectiles
* Comes with 2 x 10 round magazines
* Spring assisted pump action
* Case deflector
* Removable straight pull bolt handle
Manufactured in Australia by Southern Cross Small Arms

Nice rifle mate. Lovely smooth action. Here in the UK we can't have semi auto or Pump action centre fire rifles . We're only allowed "standard" bolt action or straight pull. Love watching how you Aussies go about pest control. Looking forward to more great content in 2024.
I had no idea your regs were worse than ours in some aspects mate.
Appreciate the support buddy 👊
Should be pretty easy to eliminate the pump action and just have the straight pull. Looks like a fairly standard AR forend under the pump mechanism.
That's really nice. I can see something like that gaining traction among the ar15 hunters in the states in areas that are clamping down on semi-autos.
Great presentation of your SCSA Taipan X , very professional review ! Purchased one these rifles , after watching your video.
Thanks
Thanks champion. Glad you got something out of it mate
Nice piece of kit mate can’t wait to c it in action 👍
Stay safe budd 🤙
Lovely piece of kit, great up load.thanks for posting. Kind regards Mike. Norfolk UK 🇬🇧
You're very welcome Mike 👊
Happy new year! I look forward to seeing this out in the field; surely you'll never be out of work.
Same to you buddy 👍
great review Rod and great tips to get the most from this firearm
Thanks buddy 👊
Nice looking bit of kit there mate, love to still see quality Aussie made products on the market, happy new year mate
Same to you mate 👊
Looking forward to seeing it in action. All the best for the new year mate cheers
Same to you Peter 👊
Happy new year Rod and looking forward to seeing more videos in 2024 👍🏾🇦🇺….my kinda videos even though I’m not a shooter I love seeing you guys keeping Australias feral in check.
Much appreciated, thankyou mate 👍
You Go Aussies. Love your work
Thanks mate 👊
I did enjoy your demo, thank you. That is a very nice Rifle and dependent on the situation you are shooting in, the Pump-action or Straight-pull seem ideal to have as options. Also, it's good to know that it is an Australian manufactured product.
Cheers mate 👊
+@gp3829
thanks mate 👊
Looks like a nice bit of kit 👌
It is mate. 👊
A big massive gday mate! Happy new year and safe travels.
G'day Kenny. Same to you champion 👌
G'day, Kool rifle. Like the bolt assist 👍🏻✌🏻
Me too mate 👌
That looks really neat! A 21st Century take on the South African Vektor H5, which was based on the Galil/R4. In S. Africa one would not have to jump through as many hoops to get a licence, as would be the case for a semi-auto rifle.
Mate, you and Hollywood get some great toys to play with 👍😀
It's been a lot of hard work mate 👊
Santa was nice haha cant wait to see it in action
Lol. Cheers mate
🇦🇺😎👍Great review mate🏁
Thanks champion 👊
Very nice.
Thank you
nice review mate kept it simple
Thanks
You know of course Nathan will want one now..
Nice rig rod I think the pigs and other ferals are in trouble lol happy New Year mate 👍🦘🇦🇺
Thanks mate. You too buddy 👊
I want to see the Taipan X in action Rodney can't wait
There's a little bit of footage in my latest video Irena

going there now@@RJMHuntingAustralia
Nice little review 👍
A little worried about the wear of the internals.. would love a follow up video after some decent use
👌
Smooth bit of kit mate. She is still super load even with a silencer.
Yeah mate. Still yet to play around with it and subsonics
And without it?
love it.. looking forward to the REAL test.. cometh piggies....
Thanks mate. First outing with it

Nice!
Cheers mate 👍
Good intro to the new rifle mate.
Have you considered adjusting the cheek riser up so you can get a proper cheek weld and a bit more stability?
I found it made the Taipan much nicer to get and maintain a sight picture.
The new forward assist spring looks to be a good improvement over the troublesome forward bolt lock on the Light.
Been playing around with it and various mounts. Got it sorted now 👍
The adjustable cheek riser is a good feature.
Coooool
Thankyou
OOowee! NICE,Rod. Drooool. I'd swap my new car for that, but,I'm stuck with a bolt Remi😉
It's certainly a great addition to the gun safe but I won't be getting rid of my bolt actions. 👌
Nah,me either Rod. I trust my bolts, and, they ride well on the quad. Keep up the good work with the foxes.👍👍@@RJMHuntingAustralia
RJM HA. Good video. Nice gun. Just a bit different than what's in use in the US. Different laws require different guns. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Cheers mate 👍
Bạn là người chuyên nghiệp dùng súng. Bạn săn bắn rất giỏi và chính xác 🇦🇺👍.
Thanks
Great video on the functions and the kinks of using it. Is it any easier to disassemble than the Light? What groupings are you getting at 100m, if you've tested?
Haven't pulled mine apart yet mate.
Ragged hole at 50m. Sun moa at 100m
thank you , great little vid on the X i have one in my safe and yet to take it out for pest control. are you making another vid on how the rifle goes on field and shoots ,
Did a bit with it on my last trip mate.

"babying it" is what they call "riding the bolt" in the defence world.
I stand corrected. 🤦♂️
We old diggers never had that problem with .303, the Owen or the SLR.
Will be interesting to see the longevity, have seen some internal wear that has me holding back. Cheers
We'll see how it goes mate
In your line of work would a semi-automatic be a better choice for those follow up shots and large mobs?
Absolutely. However the difficulty in obtaining the necessary licenses combined with the expense of a decent semi auto and safe storage requirements make it impractical for me at the moment mate 😧😪
G'day mate, how are tou able to use a suppressor in Australia or are they only band in Victoria?
They are classified as a prohibited weapon and require the necessary permits mate. I applies for them as a contract shooter and using them in a professional capacity
This blokes just showing off his suppressor
If you've git it. Flaunt it 😉
How many shots in? any issues? Would you recommend this version? I dodged the first one after all the complaints, but it's what I'm looking for
About 400 so far mate. No issues as long as you put it into battery properly. 👌
@@RJMHuntingAustralia No worries, thanks for the quick reply. I might go have another look at one
Những cây súng săn, Bạn sở hữu rất đẹp. Chúc bạn một năm mới An Lành 🇦🇺👍.
You too mate 👍
That taipan is a good looking shooter..!!!
Ive noticed you and the other Australian shooters all use bolt guns..are automatics a nono down under?...have to say, yall do very well staying on target while bolting..
Yes mate. Semi auto's are heavily restricted and full auto's totally banned
be nice in the tsph configuration. maybe just straight pull. be a great rifle now they tested some issues out
My new favorite rifle. Unfortunately, the budget does not approve yet.
Certainly a good bit of kit mate 👌
What level of accuracy are you seeking? I understand it's a hunting rifle, but is MOA or close possible?
Thanks
It's in the video description mate. Rifle comfortable shoots sub moa
Hey Rob, what type of suppressor do you have on that Taipan X? Cheers mate.
From the same company that makes the Taipan.
SCSA Q2 Moderator.
They're not currently producing them atm though.
Nice review Rod, what is the scope mount?
Porter Machine Works uni mount on the tube scope Andrew 👌
@@RJMHuntingAustralia Thanks Rod
My pleasure mate 👊
Would’ve loved to have seen a mag dump to see how the tolerances are with this new version when it heats up.
Have had no issues with it so far mate. 👌
Nice Vid Mate, you've probly said it before but what's your tripod setup
Running a Bexin ST424C tripod with a Sirui K30x ball head to arca swiss plate
@@RJMHuntingAustralia just thinking if I upgrade to this ball head or go for a bog death grip. On a fx maverick, what's your thoughts
Really depends how much you want to spend mate. I do this for work so I buy the best gear I can find.
What suppressor are you using just out of curiosity
Q2 Moderator from SCSA mate
I know they are bringing this out in .300blk soon. Would this be a good option in your opinion? Pros and cons?
For sure mate. The 300 blackout will be much better on larger game 👌
Hey mate, where did you get the ARCA plate from? i emailed SCSA but havent heard back?
thanks
It was a prototype from SCSA.
I believe they are now making them mate
@@RJMHuntingAustralia awesome thanks, will follow up
How did you get a can? what state are you in mate?
Contract shooter in NSW mate
Awesome stuff. Is this legal in all states?
Apparently so mate. To the best of my knowledge 👌
Does it make a good difference with the suppressor?
Chalk and cheese mate.
Huge difference
Nice looking rifle mate roughly straight out of the shop what is the retail on one or them cheers for the video mate and your thoughts as well
They're about $1800 mate
Pretty well priced then cheers for the info
👍
What scope are u running on it ?
Various HikMicro scopes mate. Thermal and NightVision
Does anyone know why pump action centerfires are illegal in the UK? I'm an American asking
Ignorance 🤷♂️
What kind of reliability are you getting? Of course disregarding shooter induced error as that isn't a problem with the rifle.
Best to jump on the Taipan appreciation group on Facebook. I have only put about 300 rounds through it so far without issue. Heaps more info on the page
How have you got a noise suppression can
I have the necessary prohibited weapons permits for my contract work mate.
Does it come in any other calibers besides 223? CKW
They're bringing out a 300 Blackout early this year mate
@RJMHuntingAustralia I live in the US and still can have Semitic auto and pistols
And rifle for now. Sorry, hit the wrong button with my old fingers
G’day mate, best of the season to you and yours.
It’s not an answer to bulk feral control buts it’s better than a lot of what’s been available previously for the price point.
Positive - Fit and finish are good. Cycles with no issues, 1:8 twist good for 65 gr Gamekings, price point (although you could spend another 1k pretty easy making it more shootable.
Suggestions for future iterations: It needs a bolt catch like an AR or OP SP etc that locks the bolt back on the last round, using the mag follower only wears them and forces you to manually lock back the bolt so as to release the pressure off the follower and stop the bolt going forward into battery when you “drop” the mag, the mag won’t “drop” on its own without the pressure being removed from the bolt sitting on the back of the follower. This slows down mag changes considerably.
Pin the rear stock as the machining tolerances are large enough that it moves when tight.
The trigger, it’s just bloody terrible.
Whinge: The OEM barrel break procedure is about the worst I’ve ever come across, it’s painful for a rifle with limited access through the action. Trigger feels like undoing a tight nut with a loose spanner, it’s so heavy it has no feel. I have a 2stage VP ordered which will bring it down to 2lb.
The Eureka Gun Company “Stockade” looks promising from an efficiency perspective……..
Do they make a bag to catch the shells for us reloaders?
Apparently there's a bit of conjecture as to whether you can legally run a brass catcher in NSW
Sounds pretty bloody typical for this shit state...... God forbid we collect our brass for future use and not put it in the ground.. Our country is going backwards.
Thanks for the review and info mate. Appreciate it.
Absolutely ridiculous for sure mate
not that I know of mate
What tripod is that?
It's a Bexin ST424C carbon fibre tripod mate 👌
@@RJMHuntingAustralia that’s awesome, thank you very much, I’m purchasing this gun for night hunting and running thermal, needed a tripod that suited the gun, awesome setup bro. What a legend keep up the good work. 🤙🏽🍻
Much appreciated mate. Thankyou 👊
can it be made lefthanded ?
Not as far as I know mate
@@RJMHuntingAustralia Thats a shame, thanks for letting me know, the only issue is the safety/slector, I can easily manage the rest, may need to see how one feels.
how accurate isit? Price??
Sub moa with factory ammo and retails for around $1800
Is it worth it costing $1799 Australian?
Personally, I think that the rifle is under priced mate.
@@RJMHuntingAustralia so its good price?
Yes
Wouldn’t you just you a semi auto ?
Heavily restricted in Australia mate 🤷♂️
@@RJMHuntingAustralia but don’t you have a CAT D license for autos ect
I haven't gone down the CAT D route. I may in the future but at the moment I can't justify the added hassle and expense.
@@RJMHuntingAustralia yeah right fair enough and I guess you really don’t need one unless your chasing pigs on the run but I’d love to run a suppressor for my ears🤣
Absolutely. Total gamechanger
Hmmmmmmm I got burnt with the series 1, just a piece of junk in so many ways, lets hope they ironed them out with the X but I sure as heck won't be busting the door down to get one anytime soon.
So far so good for me mate. 👍
