This video is hosted by “weekend Matt”. Top button undone and sleeves rolled up, trying to connect with the audience 😁 Now I’m off to try painting again.
Quick tip when it comes time to apply the vinyl (or the painting mask) to the lexan body, especially on larger designs that are hard to position correctly on the body: Once you have applied masking tape (or transfer tape) and removed the vinyl backing paper, use a piece of parchment paper to cover about 90% of the vinyl design, leaving only a small edge of the vinyl adhesive exposed. The parchment paper will NOT stick to the vinyl adhesive and allow you to freely slide the design into exact position. Once there, use the burnishing tool to adhere the small area of exposed vinyl adhesive, serving as an anchor point. At that point, you can carefully lift up the remaining material, slide the parchment paper out, and then burnish the rest of the decal into final position. This also works great when using multiple colors of vinyl as an exterior decal - the parchment paper lets you align each color layer before adhering to the body. Hope this suggestion helps!
Works perfectly! I’ve done two drag body’s with my own racing team. I drew the files and my LHS owner cuts vinyl $5 a logo for painting masks (two sides) no more liquid mask on the light table. At 68 I’m still painting
Just picked a Cricut and been looking for tutorials so perfect timing Matt. This will be a solid video for folks to reference and gain experience in the RC community.. Absolutely a game changer for painting. Cheers mate 👍
Oracal (Orafol) is one of the best sign vinyls on the market. The term "Intermediate" is the quality of the actual vinyl. There are generally 2 types of manufacturing processes, cast and calendered (cast being the higher quality). The vinyl you have (651) is calendered. 651 is pretty much the standard for signs and vehicle decals, etc. For your purposes of masking and decals, 651 is an ideal cost to usage value. Orafol also makes a masking material, but it would be hard to justify the additional cost. There's also a lower tack "removable" vinyl (631) which has a slightly higher price tag. But, if you're not having issues with the 651, then I would just stick with that. I would recommend one thing when it comes to making decals/masks and that would be the usage of application or transfer tape. The adhesive isn't as aggressive as masking tape which helps with the release of the decal. The R-Tape brand is a go to for consistency. They make transparent and semi-opaque versions. One other recommendation is to look in to the Silhouette brand craft cutters. They are distributed by Graphtec which is a manufacturer of commercial plotter/cutters.
Top tip: when your cutting mat stops getting sticky, clean off the old adhesive with goo gone (not the wrong one Josh was using) and then mask the edges and spray 'batting adhesive' (found at the craft store, it is similar to the 3M adhesive, but similar to the original stickiness of the cutting mat). Also, keep the plastic sheet that came with it on the adhesive in between uses to prevent cat hair from gunking it all up. I use a Brother Scan n Cut which is very similar, but super easy to use vector files or the main selling feature is you can take an existing printed sticker, Scan it, then the software can find the edges and cut it out.
Love this video!!! I have been using a vinyl plotter to help me paint for at least 20 years now. I don't use a cricut I actually use a bigger (28 inch ) format plotter/ cutter by gcc (You can get a decent sized cutter now for a couple hundred bucks that actually works if you ever plan on making larger decals) and every time I use the cutter for more of the design and do less and less hand cutting. I design all my graphics on illustrator instead of downloading them just because I'm fairly proficient at it, but I was stoked to see you show people how to pull designs off the internet instead of having to create it themselves ( which is why I think most people shy away from this bit of tech). Loved this video, keep up the great content.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, as you know I use Illustrator, but it's not the easiest program to learn right away, so I wanted to be able to give some easy options.
Excellent how-to vid! I've been wanting to get a vinyl cutter for some time now, but wasn't really sure how hard it would be to make decals and masks. Now after watching I see how easy it really is! Thanks for sharing this and I look forward to seeing more in the future!
Loved the video. I have an old school 1st Gen cricut uses the old style cartridges to change fonts 😝 but that being said one thing I use to make paint masks is shelf paper we used to call it Mac tac . It comes in large rolls and since it’s a mask colours don’t matter but white or frosted is easy to find and easy to cut.
I'm thinking back and forward about a Circuit for a long time...and every time when I forgot about it.....some one reminds me again ..grrr....lol..... thank you brother now I have to think about again.... last time I was so far to actually buy the smaller one ( Circuit joy ) but I was not sure if it would cut 0,25 mm Styrene ... so I left it alone.... well thank you anyway for the video, keep it up 😉😁👍
I've been using my #Cricut maker for some time now to make vinyl decals & print then cut stickers. I invite you to a collaborative video where I can demonstrate the project steps.
Thanks Matt! This is for sure a game changer!! I don’t know if you have yet or not, but a how to on a multi color paint job with logos would be legit and VERY helpful to a newbie such as myself
That requires a bit more setup, but it can be done! You have to make a few different cut files to start, and line up a lot of things by hand. At least, that’s how I did it. There’s probably a smarter way!
You talk about matts. I have been cutting my vinyl without the matt and it works just as well. You'll loose maybe an inch of the material, but it sure beats dealing with matts.
I started using a vinyl cutter for paint masks over 6 years ago. i used to sell them to some of my subscribers but that got out of hand and i stopped. check out some of my videos
I’ve been using my cameo silhouette for six years now. I originally bought it to cut vinyl transfers for T-shirts as well as window decals, but have since transitioned it to strictly a hobby vinyl cutter. I now use it to make masks for my RC cars, I have also used it used it to make decals for models, slot cars and RC cars, boats or anything that needs A custom cut decal. I use oracle 650 exclusively which is an indoor outdoor permanent vinyl. It’s probably my most used hobby tool.
Why is it? Some of your best most informative videos. Always cost me money! I do enjoy how you put it in laymans terms. Definitely brings up the confidence level. Always appreciate the info. Right On Brother 👊
is it possible to scan or take a picture if the masking sticker sheet, that comes with a model, then bring it into the software and have the same scale?

Love my Cricut.. crazy useful. I will say larger logos/graphics cut more smoothly and are easier.. but I've made some reasonable small text graphics with it, too. FUN stuff!!
I have a Silhouette Camero 3 vinyl cutter that I only used a few times to make stickers. Never tried to make paint masks with it. I painted a few bodies, but only in 1 or 2 colors, nothing fancy. Guess what I'm gonna (try) do this weekend! Great video, thanks!
@@scalebuildersguild sorry bad joke. I thought it just cut vinyl but at 0:54 I learned it's a cutter and sticker of vinyl lol I might buy one after learning it cuts styrene
We just bought a cricut. Of course my wife wants to make her own things but the main reason we bought it is to make decals and logos for my RC cars. I told her to watch RUclips videos to learn. This is very helpful for me because I need to learn how to make a logo for my current project. Thanks!
Heck Yeah Matt I've been using my Cricut Cutter for the Paint Masks and the Exterior Graphics on my RC's for a few months now... After watching this 4 months ago (when the video was 'released'), I knew I needed to get one...not only for cutting custom masks for painting RCs, but also to make my own vinyl auto stickers/decals. Unfortunately, other things (such as getting a Limitless V2, Cross R. HC4, and Kyosho Mini-Zs, as well as moving to Las Vegas) became more important. In the meantime, they released the 3-series. Moving forward, they had some great Black Friday deals (which actually started a couple days before Turkey Day)...and, among them was the Explore Air 2. To make a long story short, it was just delivered, along with the other accessories I ordered. Yahoooooooooo!!! 🤙🏼

This is AWESOME!!! I am researching to make an informed purchase, of a Cricut or Silhouette machine, to use with my 3 kids, for various purposes.... RC related and non-RC stuff as well... was awesome to find an SBG video when I searched for stuff to watch... Any chance you can give some input on why you chose the specific machine that you have? Would you buy this one again if it needed replaced, or if you were starting over? Any additional beginner tips, or extra supplies or equipment we should purchase as complete beginners? We have a decent printer , for general use, but may look into getting a better printer, Any advice on that subject? Thanks for the video, any additional input , from anyone, would be most appreciated... cheers.
I think the Cricut was on sale when I was looking. I'd spend a bit more next time and get the next tier Cricut for a better cutting experience with smaller sized decals. Feel free to send any more questions my way!
I am still watching…amazing! I am a little embarrassed though. I do not own a computer. I use my Iphone &/or ipad for everything. A shame though, the CRICUT is not a very expensive piece of equipment. I spend hours searching for decals, a small fortune to have custom decals made or delicately cutting my own masks.
I've been on the fence about getting a Cricut. No more. It is now on the "Must Have Soon " list! I would be using it for markings on RC planes. Many thanks fror the Video!
Good stuff Matt. I’ve had mine for a few months and found that a purpose built weeding tool is far easier to use than a blade(for picking out unwanted vinyl)… of course my eyes aren’t what they used to be, but I really mangled some stuff up before I got one.
I want to do 1:10 scale replica F1 masking of intricate sponsor logos. The lexan F1 bodies have complex curves that I think would require very thin and flexible masking material. Any recommendation for a.masking material that would work for this application and could be cut in the cricket?
At my local makerspace we have a silhouette. An old one but still does the job. To cut out stickers and templates its great stuff. I need to find a yellow painter's tape like yours because mine seems to stick too much after deburing and it's a pain to separate the cut out inserts (that little circle inside of an e, a, o,p...) to stick where it's supposed to. I too Highly recommend using one of those machines. it's great for the hobby to customize your stuff and an undeniable ally to paint intricate stuff and logos. Now that I know the machine exists, and learned how to use it, (and it's not very difficult), there's no going back. And I won't comment on the cnc or laser cutter that the makerspace also has . 😍 Wickedly satisfying and helpful and hypnotizing machines
Hey just wanted to thank you for making this video, it is very helpful information on using a cricut cutter. I’m using mine to make some mask for some drag car bodies.
I'm having trouble finding the "intermediate" version of the oracle 651 vinyl. Is it marked as intermediate on the box? I contacted a big supplier here in AU and they hadn't heard of the intermediate version either. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thought this was very cool and interesting until a computer is needed. Hopefully company's like this will join the future and make android or ios software for those of us who have moved beyond Needing a windows based system.
I picked up the Cricut Joy a few weeks ago, I got to hasty using vinyl as an exterior mask and ruined my pain job. Have you tried using masking tape applied to the cutting mat to make masks?
While awaiting VP's internet to return . . . do you regret not getting one of the more capable Cricut models? Anything you wish you could do but can't with the model you got?
I did a video on the $100 cricut air and use it for the exact same thing. It’s really great to make your own shirts and scale vinyl decals for RC cars. Awesome video!
I tried removing the background on one of my pictures and the software will not allow me to go further, and mentions i have to subscribe. How can i continue for free?
Hmm, I don't use that feature very often as I prep a lot of my graphic files myself beforehand in Adobe Illustrator. My guess is the background removal is too complex for the free features.
yo man check out the FMS k10 id really like to see you do something with that rc its a super good scale rc model of a chevy k10 like super good for out the box for the price. its got interior lights turn signals work hig and low beams the side mirrors are actually glass mirrors. i think it would be really cool to see like a prerunner or something made out of one i just cant bring myself to hack up mine if i ever get another i wanna try something like that
Appreciate the tips… i typically still click the background on simple even with transparent from a Google image as sometimes it doesn’t remove it completely.
Can you please tell me if it is possible to use the cricut maker to create 1/64 scale paint masks? I am new to this but need to create decals and masks for that scale size if possible. I just need to know how to do it.
I’m going to look into one of these. I’ve got a paint scheme idea for a Ranger body, and hand cutting all of the masks is not my idea of fun. I’ve done it once, and that was torture.
this is what I want to accomplish. I need to make my own frames for two different size bodies so I have to do the artwork and I need to be able to get it to a program that cricket will take and I only have an iPhone. & a ipad ?
I have an Air 2 and have many window stickers for 1:1 cars and RC's as well. Have also use printable vinyl with the print & cut feature for making stickers.
Very cool!!! A guy at my local hobby shop has one. He makes cut outs for his paint jobs. I had him cut me some Deadpool cut outs for a paint job I did. I want one of these
"Flip vertical" is good if you are manipulating shapes and stuff like that to make a design. There's also an option on the "make it" screen to mirror the image, which would also work for your purpose of flipping the text.

That's awesome, thanks for watching!
Hey just wanted to thank you for making this video, it is very helpful information on using a cricut cutter. I’m using mine to make some mask for some drag car bodies.
Thanks for watching and glad it helped!
I'm having trouble finding the "intermediate" version of the oracle 651 vinyl. Is it marked as intermediate on the box? I contacted a big supplier here in AU and they hadn't heard of the intermediate version either. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
As long as it's 651, it should be fine!
I betcha Matt's scrapbooking room is super cute, I wonder if he wears a shawl while making his scrapbooks....
And I sip tea as well!
Could we possibly use an iPad instead of a desktop computer? A friend has a cricut I could use, unfortunately I don’t have a computer.
Yep! There's an app for the cricut you can use. Thanks for watching!
I have a Cricut and have considered using for wrapping a lexan body,
have you tried?
I haven't, but I'm sure it's possible. You'll just have to be really careful with bubbling. Go for it!
Lol I was just thinking of buying a Cricut for this to make RC livery. Searched and found this video!
It's definitely a game changer! Hope the video helped and thanks for watching!
Thanks for this vid man. Been thinking about grabbing one of these for this exact purpose.
Glad I could help!
How are you liking the software? I heard the Silhouette Cameo cutters are more user-friendly.
I'm not familiar with the Cameo, so I don't have a frame of reference. Thanks for watching!
Thought this was very cool and interesting until a computer is needed. Hopefully company's like this will join the future and make android or ios software for those of us who have moved beyond Needing a windows based system.
A computer isn't required. Works with iOS and a bluetooth connection.
great, now I gata steal the wifes cricket... 😆
great video, super helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I picked up the Cricut Joy a few weeks ago, I got to hasty using vinyl as an exterior mask and ruined my pain job. Have you tried using masking tape applied to the cutting mat to make masks?
I did try that, but found the masking tape to be a little thin to get consistent results.
I'd love a SBG 1/10 scale bumper sticker or decal to put on my K10!!
I release bumper stickers 2x/ year... probably this Spring!
While awaiting VP's internet to return . . . do you regret not getting one of the more capable Cricut models? Anything you wish you could do but can't with the model you got?
I’m perfectly happy with the Cricut I have. Not a single complaint.
I also made Axial SCX1 decals for my Jeep. The decals are almost 2 feet long.
Cool!
I did a video on the $100 cricut air and use it for the exact same thing. It’s really great to make your own shirts and scale vinyl decals for RC cars. Awesome video!
Great channel. Definitely adding Cricut to my Christmas list 😀
Thanks for watching! Hope Santa brings you a Cricut- it's a great tool!
Great video. Who’s this “we” you keep talking about?
It’s the royal “we”. As in, “We are not amused”. 😂
Wife Has 2.. large one and the mini.. looks like I’m going to have to barrow one.. thank you so much for sharing this….
Thanks for watching and good luck with the Cricut!
Thanks SBG, great video. Been thinking about getting a machine like this for masks.
It's great for masking! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks. I've used an older Cricut but im ready for a new one.
Hope it helped!
yo man check out the FMS k10 id really like to see you do something with that rc its a super good scale rc model of a chevy k10 like super good for out the box for the price. its got interior lights turn signals work hig and low beams the side mirrors are actually glass mirrors. i think it would be really cool to see like a prerunner or something made out of one i just cant bring myself to hack up mine if i ever get another i wanna try something like that
I had one, but didn't review it! It's a nice truck though!
Awesome! just purchased a Cricut 2 days ago this video perfect timing to get me up to speed . I have some bodies already waiting to try it out on .
Appreciate the tips… i typically still click the background on simple even with transparent from a Google image as sometimes it doesn’t remove it completely.
My wife has a 3 different circuit's I have had her make me a few decals but will try it for a mask for my next rc paint job.
Enjoy!
Can you please tell me if it is possible to use the cricut maker to create 1/64 scale paint masks? I am new to this but need to create decals and masks for that scale size if possible. I just need to know how to do it.
I think that this machine would struggle at that scale. Sorry!
Sold! I’m going to look into purchasing a cricut for our lab! Thanks!
Glad I could help! Enjoy!
I’m going to look into one of these. I’ve got a paint scheme idea for a Ranger body, and hand cutting all of the masks is not my idea of fun. I’ve done it once, and that was torture.
I've been there! The Cricut is a game changer!
Can it do 11x12 to airbrush on a canvas? Thanks I have a circut 3 explore
It’s capable of a 12x12 square of cutting from what I can surmise.
My Wife has a Cricut that I have learned to use for my RC channel logo/stickers & T-shirts. Pretty cool machine for sure💯😎
Believe it or not, the Cricut weeding tool is actually a great device.
I'll check it out!
this is what I want to accomplish. I need to make my own frames for two different size bodies so I have to do the artwork and I need to be able to get it to a program that cricket will take and I only have an iPhone. & a ipad ?
iPad has software for the Cricut I believe.
I have a 32” vinyl cutter I used to make banners with… now I have to make my own paint decals. Whew failed business into happy hobby!!! Hahah
I have an Air 2 and have many window stickers for 1:1 cars and RC's as well. Have also use printable vinyl with the print & cut feature for making stickers.
Great idea. I’m going to need to borrow my wife’s cricut.
Go for it!
Hmmm, I need both this and a 3d printer within a year.
Can only chose one. Which one?
Tough decision, but I would say that the 3D printer would be my choice. Thanks for watching!
Very cool!!! A guy at my local hobby shop has one. He makes cut outs for his paint jobs. I had him cut me some Deadpool cut outs for a paint job I did. I want one of these
Do you need a subscription to use the removal tool in the software?
Apparently yes. I don't use that feature though, and prep my images in Photoshop.
Nice . I am using the Cameo 4 , also very good one 👍
I've also a cameo 4! With the right blade and mat it can even cutout thin styrene
Great tutorial. Now I have to buy one for my base camp project
Enjoy!
"Flip vertical" is good if you are manipulating shapes and stuff like that to make a design. There's also an option on the "make it" screen to mirror the image, which would also work for your purpose of flipping the text.
My wife loves her Cricut ! I have yet to use it for my rcs but I’m willing to give it a go for ahee
You should!
Man i need one of these for sure
Always been interested in one of these.
