Thanks to the Airbrush Garage for great content that helped me figure this out!🙌 If you are still having trouble cutting after following the above try this too. As in the video, I have the Cricut Explorer Air 2. The fine point blade works best but you will have to cut multiple times. 1. Create a custom Mylar material one for 7.5 mm & another for 10 mm in the Cricut Design App. 2. When you create the custom material, you will have a change to tell it to cut multiple times 2x - 9x. 3. Depending on the blade: 7-7.5mm mylar cuts with 2-3x. 2x was enough for an average fine point blade. 4. For 10mm, I had to cut 8x to get a clean detail separation for stencils and I chose blockier silhouettes.
Thanks Thinkingdhop for taking the time to share that very clear step-by-step. That will be very helpful to other viewers. Thanks again, and thanks for watching.
Your tutorials are very clear and concise. Thanks to you I'm finally understanding how to use my Cricut. Did you or would you make a tutorial on how to make our own designs for making templates or stencils? would you share any suggestions for how we can tell when the blade needs replacing? udaBEST!
Thank you so much for this information, I was going to buy other blades since my machine didn’t cut through the mylar i have. Now i kniw to test it first like you showed
So glad I found your video. I'm currently China painting on a dozen white coffee mugs and needed a way to create an image with stencils rather than freestyle painting each mug individually. I thought about cutting designs in mylar with an Exacto knife because I don't have a Cricut machine. I will be getting one now and will be watching more of your great tutorials! I really appreciate your no nonsense, detailed instructions.
Thank you for the nice comment, Sharon. The machine definitely does come in handy. A thinner mylar like .4 or .5 might be better for bending around a tumbler. Depending on what you are doing, vinyl makes the best stencil because there is little chance of paint Bleed but...of course they are not reusable. Good luck with the machine, and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the tutorial. I was just playing around with what I had on hand and made some stencils using thin acetate sheets but was looking for a thicker choice and you answered all my questions. Excited to try out the 7 mil. Excellent content!
Thanks for the tips -- I had tried 3 times to cut just using the stencil setting not knowing that my material was thicker than Cricut's. But "mylar" and "more" pressure saved the day! The material I was using wasn't marked for its thickness so was confusing. Thanks again!
If you use a non moisturized baby wipe you can clean the matt a great many times. Also one can use washable school glue sticks to adhere stencils to the matt. Wipe well after use and the stickiness comes back (until it is all the way off) of course by the time the stickiness is gone you'll need another matt. I use the Brother DX pro series cutter with Circuit or Siser products and they perform very well in the Brother. I do like the workspace that Cricut offers over the Brother workspace, however, all one has to do is export to a standard cut file and that is solved. Great Video.
Great video. Simple exploration without mambo jumbo like others like to do to make impression like rocket science. Simple but very professional and informative, thank you for sharing 😅 Just one question - how many microns is 5 and 7 mil molar?
My cricut must just suck I been at it for a while adjusting even after over a week and change blades even and won't even cut card stock on the setting cardstock... I want to do mylar. Got 10mil and says this will even cut thicker than that and had to crank the settings way up...wish I had something working
Hi Raymond. 10 mil is a little thick, but I still think it can do it. Did you set the pressure to more? When you do that, it should double cut it. Now, with the same settings, another way is to let it cut, and once it is done, DO NOT remove it from the machine. Just simply hit the cut button again and let it cut a second time. This should work. Let me know how it goes.
Throw them away when they lose their stickiness? Nooooooo! Go get you some LA cleaner from the dollar tree, wash off your mat and let it air dry , stickiness will be there when it dries. Over time yes it will.lose it, but if your on a budget you can get a can of easy tac! Tape off the edges and do a litht spray on the mat. There. Sticky again.
Jp, Cricuts and Silhouettes (in my opinion) are the best for home use and they carry different price points based on the size of machine. They have a lot of options to be able to fit your needs and price point. Machines outside this class of cutters (commercial use) become very expensive. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
The Explore air 2 is cheaper than the Maker 3 and does everything you are going to want it to do. As far as the blade, the standard blade is what I use. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Scaramoush, no...a mil is .001 of an inch. Mils are measured in thousands. For example paint thickness or paper is measured in mils. What you are referring to is millimeters.
Cheryl,Glad you liked the video. Two main take-a-ways when cutting thick mylar... a sharp blade and setting your pressure to more. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
This is kind of an old video so idk if this is helpful anymore, but using a baby wipe on the sticky mat can help clean off some of the gunk and make it last longer. I have pets so plenty of pet hair gets on mine hah.
Very well done sir! I wish I could have found you earlier, your walk thru and patience are top notch. No flash, just the right amount of info. Bravo! I was in the process of ordering mylar and a deep cut blade, thought I might check out RUclips first. Happy I did. I am now a fan and follower. I can't wait to see your other videos. Thanks again!
Jim, thanks for the nice feedback and I'm glad I could help. I have a video coming out next week on all the features and tools in Design space. Hope you check it out. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
Thank you for the heads up and the quick reply! I will definitely check it out. I also want to get into airbrushing, so your channel is gold for me. I have crash coursed myself in design space to get things done, I'm sure I have more to learn. I have been using corel draw (I have had CD for several years). and design space to get compliment each other, learning snafus everywhere. Lol I do appreciate you and thank you for sharing.
Casper, basically. Some color photos need more work. Check out the Jesus multi part stencil i did. I bought it on Etsy (no longer available). Single line drawings work best because they are quick and easy, and there are plenty of them on the net. For example, a Harley logo or a Skull. Hope this helps.
Lynn, it took me awhile to finally get one but no regrets. I found myself using it more than I thought. So handy to have around. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Rory. A mil is different than a millimeter (mm). Mils are measured in thousands of an inch. 7 mils = .007" (inches). Paint layers, sheet plastics, mylar, etc. Are measured in mils. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Mancjazz, I am glad you liked the video. I never said mm, which means millimeter. What I said was mils. Mils are measured in thousands of inches. Things such as paper and paint thickness are measured in mils. 7 mils = .007". Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Thank you! Thank you! I don’t use my cricut to cut stencils. My friend needed some cut: this is the exact material she had and I was baffled! Like you…I tried the “more” just for regular stencil, a deep cut blade, and a knife blade. I wasn’t choosing Mylar! Saved the day!
Why not create a new material where you can select the blade type and a higher default pressure, then add the "more" step? I'm still working through getting 7mm to cut on an explore 3.
Prowlman, Sorry you are having trouble. Try a new blade, should work. I agree though they should have an option for thicker Mylar than they do. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Simon, 7 mil is .007" (inches). Mils are measured in thousands of an inch. Mils are also used to measure paint thickness. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
I've been thinking about getting a Cricut. Is there any model to avoid? ones that don't do well on mylar stencils??? I may go the pre owned route if I can find a deal that my bank account likes.
Gwen, glad you found the video helpful. I have two other cricut videos check them out when you get a chance. Good luck your gonna live the machine. Thanks for watching.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! Ohh my goodness I have tried so many times to cut on a thicker mil! I even bought an Ikonart because I thought you couldn't cut it deep enough on Cricut.
Thank you for posting this video. I just bought an Explore Air 2 and I have never used a Cricut before, but am anxious to learn. I'm looking forward to making my own stencils and many other items. This video was very easy to follow. Thanks! I 👍, Subscribed and Saved it. 😊
Carrie, very cool. You are going to love your Air 2 it is so versital. I am so glad you like the video. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Much appreciated.
Pixxa37. Yes. Set the pressure to more and double cut it. What I mean by that is when the cut cycle is done, do not remove it. Simply press the cut button and let it cut a second time. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching.
Didnt read through all your comments so someone may have alerted you to this already - but material thickness is not either 5 or 7 mm it is 0.5 or 0.7 mm... I kept looking thinking no way that material is that thick - and finally realised the difference. Otherwise you have a nice style and are easy to watch.
Hi Chris. what I say in the video is 7 mils. A mil is .007 of an inch. Mils are measured in thousands of an inch. Paper, paint thickness and in this case mylar are measured in mils. Not to be mistaken by mm (millimeters). Hope this helps, and thanks for the comment . Thanks for watching.
Chris, it really doesn't matter where you come from a mil is not the same as a millimeter. Mils are for measuring things like paint, paper, mylar, plastic sheets, etc. I hope this clears up the confusion. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Thanks for all your hard work and I always leave your vids with another helpful tip (like the magnets and steel backer board to secure in-work projects....very cool and I hit your Amazon site and ordered it up. ) And I just ordered the Cricut Maker (may want to engrave in the future??) and these mylar sheets. Back in my AB history ...hmmm....1985 or so....we used to cut our stencils with a fine tip wood burning tool....lol....we had to move very carefully on the polystyrene for fear of burning a gapping hole in the design ....being retired and of limited art budget, I find AB stencils are not cheap and in the long run the Cricut will pay for itself. I'll keep watching man....great job!
mm (millimeters) are different than mil ( mils) mils are measured in thousands of an inch. 1 mil is .001 of an inch. Products like paint and paper are measured in mils. (Not mm) hope this helps.
Thanks so much for this great video! I just got a brand new Explore 3 and tried following this but unfortunately it still isn’t cutting all the way through. So after that I tried doing a 9x cut with “more” pressure at 350 pressure, and it’s still not cutting. My stencil is a 0.0075” thick Food Safe Grafix Craft Plastic, so only ever-so-slightly thicker than yours. Do you think a thick blade is my only option now? Thanks so much!
Yes. I would try a deep cut blade. It may be due to the hardness of the plastic mat you are using. The stencils I cut are mylar, still a type of plastic but maybe not as hard. When you are successful cutting it out please let me know what you had to do. It will be very helpful to other viewers. Thank you for sharing.
To save you from having to buy a new mat take soapy water wash with your hand then take a card and push the dirt away an it’s as good as new I’ve done many of time
Just found your video... looking for a stencil substrate tutorial - gonna save this in my favorites for cricut tips! Wanted to mention - you do NOT need to throw your mats away! Just wash them in warm, soapy water with a scrubby sponge & let air dry. The stickiness comes back and clean! Not sure if you shared a later video about that, but I'd rather be annoying than you throwing unnecessary $$ away! 😁 Hugs, from Mesa, AZ 🌵
Depends....for stencils like I make an air 2 is perfect. It cuts a variety of material as thick as card stock. A maker 3 is for cutting thicker material. Watch some videos on the maker 3 and compare the two. Hope this helps and thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
Carl, mm and mils are different units of measure. Things that are vert thin like paper and paint thickness are measured in mils. A mil is 1 thousand of an inch (.001"). Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching.
Hey Dale wanting to cut some outline of cars to have some stencils that speed up my T shirt Airbrush Art, I have the opportunity to do some cruise in car shows. I was wondering can I download pencil sketches that I draw save to file and transfer the to file to cut on Our Cricut ? It would save me a ton of time to have stencil of particular outlines of Cars to use for the airbrushing appreciate any input Thanks.
Mikey, you can do it but the pencil sketch has to be dark and crisp. Sketchy gagged line will drive you nuts once downloaded into design center. But the short answer is yes. Yes you can. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
I'm very interested in this machine! I do models and was wondering if it will do vinyl? Cause I'd like to make stickers and painting stencils for airbrush. With car bodies they are so curvy. Very nice channel
David, it will absolutely do vinyl. That is actually what the machine was intended for. You will live it. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I have spent most of the day trying to figure out how to cut the .07 to no avail. It would not cut thru. I will give Mylar a try tomorrow. Glad I found you! Thanks a lot!
June, when you set the pressure to more, it double cuts. If you find it still isn't cutting through in all areas, possibly due to not the sharpest blade. You can recut. How you do this is once it is done cutting, do not press the arrow to release the mat. Hit the "C" cut button to re cut. That will definitely do it! Hope that helps.
Thank you for explaining it so clearly. I have exact same sheet/thickness and would have also use the deep cut blade. Good to know that it is not needed.
Omg thank you so much for this tutorial you have no idea how many videos I've watched today trying to figure this out !!! It worked and cut perfectly!!!!
Following what you shared just cost me a sheet of Mylar. I have a new Cricut Maker 3 (couldn't access the custom materials setup for my old Explorer 2) so I followed your instructions to the letter. Wasted a sheet of mylar as it did NOT cut all the way through. 🙁
I am sorry to hear that. I just posted a video on how to double cut that addresses that problem. Not everyone has that problem but if you do that video addresses it.
In reference to your possibly wasting your money pertaining to having to purchase the longer cutting blade and not being able to use it, here is a video my wife and I was watching last night pertaining to that very subject. The title to the video is… “Fool-Proof Reusable Stencils With Cricut” posted to RUclips by “Makers gonna Learn” in that video she references how to install and use that longer cutting needle (about halfway (or more), through the video). Just thought I would let you know how it can be done even if there is no setup step for doing so - If you are still interested in using that longer cutting blade and want to watch that video. - Just trying to help out.
1880, yeah, the deep cut blade will work as well. What happend was when I first tried to cut the 7 mil with the regular blade it didn't work so I thought I needed the deep cut blade only to discover that the regular blade worked with the pressure setting set to Moore. Thanks for the info. Much apriciated.
Hi, thanks so much. I did the same paying 35 pounds for blade and case. I can't see a material dial.on the cricuit maker 3 any tips? The company have rubbish instructions, thank God for RUclips and people like yourself.
I just ordered a Cricket Explore 2 online. I want to make reusable stencils using mylar and make wooden signs. My question is after you cut the stencil in your video out. Can you use the unused mylar left over? So it doesn't go to waste. Thank you.
C M, the answer is yes. If I have a sheet where I cut something and have a lot left over. When I have another cut I want to make I will simply turn the sheet on the grip mat to have the "bottom" of the sheet now be the top. As long as you have enough material left position your sheet to the upper left corner of the mat. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
@@TheAirbrushGarage yes I've adjusted it to more, less, then back to default. Doing this between the three, I noticed that each one was doing worse each time. The stencil paper was starting to come off the mat as it was cutting out the stencil. I don't know if it's because of the mm of the paper. I'm using 4mm stencil paper. I think it's too thin.
@@SalomesTransformations0702 4 mil (.004") cuts fine at normal preasure. Make sure you are selecting stencil material and you are using a standard grip mat.
I have used a cricut for a long while now, to save you some money on buying a new mat when the one you have gets dirty. Just wash it with regular soap and water, no abrasive cleaner or scrubber. soap and water and the mat will get sticky again. Also, the plastic covering gets static and attracks dust, so when you take it off the cricut, make sure you cover it in a microfiber cloth, or put it in between two pieces of paper. Since you have those deep cut blades, try using the thin basa wood to cut out wood stencils for sooo many more amazing art. ... Now.. I need help with my airbrush and none of your videos cover the issue i'm having.
Angelita, first...thank you for all the great tips. Now...as far as the airbrush what problem are you having? Maybe I can help. I do have over 100 videos on the channel and quite a few on trouble shooting. Let me know and thanks for watching.
Thanks to the Airbrush Garage for great content that helped me figure this out!🙌
If you are still having trouble cutting after following the above try this too.
4. For 10mm, I had to cut 8x to get a clean detail separation for stencils and I chose blockier silhouettes.

where are you getting 7 mm from ??? 7 mm is thick as a whole magazine. its over 1/4 inch.. do you mean 0.7 mm
7 mils not mm. A mil is measured in thousands of an inch..007" things like paper and paint thickness are measured in mils.

I've only ever cut vinyl with my Silhouette, so my blades stay good for a long time. How much wear and tear does the mylar do to the blades?
Rachel, I am not sure of the exact ware and tear, but my blades last a very long time. Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching.
Hi! I am interested in purchasing a cricut to make stencils for face painting of small details. Which machine do you recommend and which one blade?
The Explore air 2 is cheaper than the Maker 3 and does everything you are going to want it to do. As far as the blade, the standard blade is what I use. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

I 👍, Subscribed and Saved it. 😊
Carrie, very cool. You are going to love your Air 2 it is so versital. I am so glad you like the video. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Much appreciated.
What Blade are you using please?
CK. It's just a regular fine point blade. Here is a link. amzn.to/3T9j0y9

Awesome
🖖Wow such clarity of presentation, congrats I finally understand what I am trying to do stencilwise!
Did you cut the stencil twice?
SUBSCRIBED
Andrew, I did not. The pressure setting need to be set to "more".
@@TheAirbrushGarage Thank you I appreciate the reply and thanks for making the video👍😷👍
I have the chance to buy mylar 7.5mm. will it work? I have a Maker
Pixxa37. Yes. Set the pressure to more and double cut it. What I mean by that is when the cut cycle is done, do not remove it. Simply press the cut button and let it cut a second time. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching.
@@TheAirbrushGarage Thank you very much!
@@TheAirbrushGarage ummm very confusing - and apologies. Where I come from you say the word mils and you are talking millimeters.
Chris, it really doesn't matter where you come from a mil is not the same as a millimeter. Mils are for measuring things like paint, paper, mylar, plastic sheets, etc. I hope this clears up the confusion. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the tips! I was trying to cut a 5mm stencil, and this was immensely helpful!
Carly, I am glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Thank you for this. I’ve been researching before I buy and this is the best vid I’ve found. Very helpful.
Art, glad you like the video. Thank you for your feedback and thanks for watching.
That all is very nice of you, Mark, thank you.
Why does it not look like 7 mm at all. I have a 5 mm foam board in front of me and its way thicker i don't get it
mm (millimeters) are different than mil ( mils) mils are measured in thousands of an inch. 1 mil is .001 of an inch. Products like paint and paper are measured in mils. (Not mm) hope this helps.
@@dancuccurullo8453 ok thanks for this information
Thank you for the tutorial, here I go wish me luck.
Tammy, Awesome! Thank you for the tip.
Good shit bro , this shit helped me alot .. I'm getting Into stencils 🎉
thanks so much for a very clear and concise tutorial! Now I have to figure out which Cricut to buy.... any suggestions?
Depends....for stencils like I make an air 2 is perfect. It cuts a variety of material as thick as card stock. A maker 3 is for cutting thicker material. Watch some videos on the maker 3 and compare the two. Hope this helps and thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
Answers a question I have had for ages. Thanks
Ivor, glad I could help. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
OK. Barring other complications I might marry you. I finally have a workable stencil!!!
Lol
I take it the Mylar is 0.7mm
Carl, mm and mils are different units of measure. Things that are vert thin like paper and paint thickness are measured in mils. A mil is 1 thousand of an inch (.001"). Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching.
Can u do a vid how to cut out sticky stencils designed for nail art. Plz
I was want to cut 7 mil Mylar and your tutorial was excellent. Thanks
Lorna, I am glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching.
Hope that helps.
exactly what I needed!! thanks so much!!
Just got my first Cricut, thanks for the easy to follow, helpful video!
Exactly the information I was looking for - delivered in a no nonsense and direct way. THANK YOU!
Robin, thank you for the nice comment and thanks for watching.
Great! Perfect just what I was looking for!!!
I also bought a deep cut blade, and found your video while trying to figure out why my cuts weren’t cutting my 6mil material. Thanks for the tips!
Kevin, you're welcome and thanks for watching.
Great info. I was just about to get one of those blades.
Thank you for this video I’m a beginner and this has really helped will be watching a lot more for help which you explained easily x
I am glad you liked the video Denise. I appreciate the comment, and thanks for watching.
Thank you for explaining it so clearly. I have exact same sheet/thickness and would have also use the deep cut blade. Good to know that it is not needed.
Lollka, I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching.
I had no idea cricut mDe a red maker. Wow pretty cool. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching. I am glad you liked it.
Great, thanks so much. Just to have instructions for the 7ml is perfect because I bought a package but thought it might not work.
E, glad I could help. Thanks for the comment and watching.
Thank you so much, this helps so much
Very helpful.. Thanks for the clear, concise and easy to digest tutorial my guy
Thanks, Richard, I am glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching.
Very helpful. Thank you
Thank u so much. I'm new to this Cricut thing. And been needing help with this for months now. Again thanks
Glad I could help!
I'm building wooden fishing lures, and this looks like a good technology for developing stencils for scale patterns and other features. Thank you!
Charles, good luck with the lures I like to fish as well. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Omg thank you so much for this tutorial you have no idea how many videos I've watched today trying to figure this out !!! It worked and cut perfectly!!!!
Rochi, I'm glad I could help. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Very helpful. Thank you for doing this tutorial. I now know why my deep cut blade isn't cutting through my 7ml stencil sheet completely.
Sara, glad the video helped. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Wow! Thanks so much! This was exactly the information I needed! Your work looks amazing. Thanks again!
Thanks, Ellen. I am glad you liked the video. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Hi, thanks so much. I did the same paying 35 pounds for blade and case. I can't see a material dial.on the cricuit maker 3 any tips? The company have rubbish instructions, thank God for RUclips and people like yourself.
xtremeshot, my only experience is with the Explore Air2. I would youtube your exact machine. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
EXCELLENT thank you!
Ok so I'm still stuck. My stencil did good. But it didn't cut all the way through.
Natalie, did you adjust the blade pressure to more?
Also...ruclips.net/video/dFvXHHlwfDk/видео.html
