Hey guys, so I want to let you know that I will not be allowing any “bashing” in the comments. If you viewers are having a hard time finding or understanding the the kind of information you're suggesting they find, I've had a great deal of help from AI chat bot. They can give you product information, and what machines are compatible together. Ive tried a many different ai apps but my favorite is Genie. That particular AI answers my questions extremely thoroughly, and always makes sure to warn me about any trouble I might possibly come across, like making sure I knowcompatible consumables are, and any additional equipment I might need or want. It's really very impressive all the things an AI chat can help you with. It saves me SO much time and energy!

As someone who spent approximately 30 years working with, and providing support, for computers and software as my career, in my opinion, this is the best video I have seen on this topic! (and I’ve watched plenty!)😬 I wish it could somehow be made ‘mandatory viewing’ for anyone considering purchasing an electronic cutting machine or asking “which one should I buy?”. So true on so many levels. One example, I purchased an ea2 in Nov knowing I could use my android. Got my machine unboxed, cut their sample test and quickly purchased a svg file within hours of receiving my machine. Upon trying to open the file I soon found out files need a computer. Oh no, my heart and ambition rapidly diminished. Thankfully my boss purchased a laptop out of fear when the pandemic started for me to work from home if I were to get sick. I asked if he would mind if I used it for personal use and he agreed. Very blessed now.

I personally own a cricut (and love it) But first I did download the design space program and play around BEFORE purchasing the machine. I also considered what I wanted to do with the machine, so I decided to get the explore air, I knew the maker could cut more materials, but I wanted to stick with what I was currently interested in. It is a pricey purchase, do your research and make an informed decision, by doing so you will help eliminate buyers remorse. And be patient with yourself and have fun. I recently revisited this video and it helped me make the decision to buy a Brother Scan and Cut. I'm relatively new to crafting and I'm still sorting out what I want to do. Right now, I'm making lots of cards for Veterans. Being able to cut various sizes and multiple images really streamlines my projects. The recipients are (hopefully) accepting of my novice status and I'm getting plenty of practice while doing something I want to do.
In my previous comment here, I mentioned a lack of space. I fixed that. I turned a spare bedroom into my craft room, complete with two large work tables and plenty of storage. I'm making the investment, so quality crafting will become eaiser.
Thanks, Maymay for your helpful videos. I'm really enjoying the current Monday series.

I do art for fun and I'm considering making a sticker shop. I already have a bunch of designs completed and I know exactly how to make them into stickers (with and without a cutting machine). I've printed some and hand cut them but discovered that it's quite difficult with my disability as it makes my symptoms worse especially my hands shaking which is not good when doing lots of careful cutting. The shaking makes my cutting less precise and therefore the stickers are lower quality.
This video has been helpful making sure I consider different aspects. Overall I think a cutting machine would be beneficial for me and my current career goals/plans :)

I didn't allow myself to get frustrated, when I feel overwhelmed, I quit, put stuff away and tackle it the next day or day after. AMAZING just how many problems I've solved just by sleeping on it... I wake in the morning going "duh"... that's why it didn't work!".... try again and YAY! It works. I have limited funds, limited supplies and a huge list of "want to do", but I will slowly build up my materials and learn as I go. Thanks mostly to you and Melodie's teaching videos.... I no longer fear Design Space... and am getting it figured out more and more each time I work there. Have even made a few of my OWN cutout cards.... Very solid advice for anyone thinking about jumping into maker space with a Cricut. Do your research and be honest with what you really want to do. Thanks.

My daughter used her Cricut to make favors for her wedding (and boy was her husband delighted she saved money somewhere, that was one beautiful, Expensive wedding and itʼs paid for, but they could have sent two of their kids through a Masterʼs degree for what it cost, no lie, literally!) but that was one thing everyone raved about!
I appreciate this video because I was so jealous, but I will just keep my sewing machine and as someone said, use an Exacto knife. It was a good thing they got married during a summer break as she is in her second year of law school and needed that time to learn how to use it. But she loves whatever she has, and those wedding favors were gorgeous. Many people commented on them and realized sheʼs more than a high maintenance blonde.
Nope, after this, I am no longer green.

Very helpful info, Maymay! I’ve been thinking about purchasing a Cricut Joy for some time. I’m pretty tech savvy and already have what I need to get started. I am mostly interested in having a cutting machine for paper. A Brother Scan n Cut would be ideal and will do a lot! But the price isn’t in my budget at this time. I have several die cut machines and lots of dies and will continue to use them. But for my very small vintage reseller and art biz,I want to be able to do more automated cutting for my paper and card crafting needs. So I’m still considering it, but the Joy may be the best thing for me at this time. Thanks Maymay!

I was given an old Cricut CRV001 and while looking for various information on how to use it, this video popped up. I was hesitant to watch it because I didn't want to be told I shouldn't have it (is what I thought you were going to say). But, I'm really glad I watched it because #1) I totally agree with what you are saying. People laugh at me for spending so much time researching any new hobby I'm trying, even as simple as learning how to loom-knit or watercoloring, but it really does pay off and saves me from buying unnecessary accessories. #2) Mine is the old cartridge based machine, and I've been able to find what I need on the internet, and I don't have to connect it to my computer. #3) I've also seen too many people jump on the bandwagon for whatever the latest and greatest thing is without thinking about if they really need it or what other things they will need to make it work and they end up wasting money. Thank you for covering this topic.

I am so excited by what the machine can do. I love crafting, and I love technology, so this is right up my alley. I’m still working at the moment, but retirement is not that far off (approx 6 years) and I am hoping that by then I will have aced the machine, and can use it to make extra money! The only problem I foresee, is that I live in South Africa, and with the Dollar Rand exchange rate being what it is, the materials are pretty expensive. Am busy looking at getting someone in the USA to send me some materials.

I have a friend who’s very techy and she uses the top-of-the-line Silhouette. She turns out fabulous cards! I have a number of manuel hand crank die cutting machines and I go to them all the time. My mother gave me her old Silhouette when she bought a new one, only to turn around and sell the new one because it was too complicated. The problem with all electronic machines, until you get really good at them, is that they gobble up a lot of paper!
You would think that metal cutting dyes would come down in price now that so many people are going to electronic machines, but I’ve seen some stamp and die sets costing almost $50.00! Sorry, not buying metal cutting dies at $24 a die! That’s ridiculous.
Your comment about using a tablet, such as an iPad, versus a computer is extremely valid. A tablet has very little memory or RAM; it is not designed to store the amount of data that electronic cutting machine programs need. It’s set up to read books on, to get information, to watch RUclips or Pinterest, or Instagram. An electronic cutting machine is very data heavy, because that data tells the machine how to enlarge and reduce the patterns that you pick, or how to flip a design, or do a shadow, etc. Tablets are only meant to access things on the Internet quickly, and not store a lot of information.

    • @pat4005
      @pat4005 3 месяца назад

      No. That is not correct.
You can buy tablets that have a high Capacity and Storage!
MANY artists, designers, and media producers use tablets professionally, for designing stickers, enamel pins, low-content books, comic books and graphic novels, graphics, illustrations, and more!
Plus audio and video editing and numerous other creative things that may be necessary for a variety of media products.
So no, a tablet is not limited to simplistic, passive things only, such as watching YT, reading books, or visiting social media sites.
That may be the way YOU choose to use a tablet, but it is certainly NOT the only function they serve, or do well.
Some tablets have a capacity of up to 256 GB, and up to 2TB storage!
In my home studio, I use 2 desktop computers with wide screen displays, and have pen tablets that I use for input to the computers (beats using a mouse when you are designing and painting).
I also have a couple pen input tablets that I use away from the computer (for a change of scenery or when not sitting at the desk).
I use them professionally for designing products, graphic design, video editing and illustration.
So in essence, you can use them just for fun to watch videos and social media for entertainment, or as a hobbyist to to creative things.
But some of us use tablets every day as professionals.
It's a wonderful tool that makes us a living doing what we love!

I was on the fence for months years ago before purchasing my personal sized Cricut and cartridges. As I learned how to use it, I bought more cartridges and used it for years. Then I was on the fence about the Cricut Explorer. I waited a couple of years because I didn’t to be on the computer all of the time as I’m on it at work all day. So I started with my iPad. As I learned and became more comfortable with it, I then found I could do some of the things on my iPad that could be done with a laptop. So I then purchased a laptop. Now I can switch back and forth between the iPad and laptop. Research, asking lots of questions to someone who knows how to use it, etc before purchasing. Yes you need to be comfortable with technology.

Regarding iPads, or other tablets, there are a wide variety of features available on that type of platform. However, the advanced features, including processor power and memory capacity, that might be necessary to interface with certain other tech tools would not be generally available on an entry level tablet. Powerful tablets often cost as much or more than a fairly high end laptop.

I'm used to using laser engravers/cutters and 3d printers. I actually run a small business from home with my laser machines, doing custom engravings, making small crafts, and even small tables, but I still did my research before I started my business and even long before I bought the machines. I first thought about a cutting machine when I used my laser to cut very intricate patterns out of card stock for layered bookmarks. Took a long time and leaves singe marks on the underside, so a cutter would be so much better. I'm now thinking about expanding into making vinyl decals for other businesses, shirts, hats, etc. Since not everyone needs coasters, or another mug lol. So I'm now doing my research on cutting machines before I decide if I want to get one or not and which one, if I do. Came across this video while doing that research. The thing about rushing into things before you know your machine is absolutely true. For anyone that's ever run a laser engraver or 3d printer, they can tell you that you will run through so much material, just doing settings tests lol.
