Me, who has a drawer full of 1in and smaller pieces of scrap vinyl: people dont precisely cut out their design and save the extra??? Who would just peel that huge chunk off???
👋😳 Ummm….me when I first started? 🫣🤭 Thankfully, I quickly quit & now have joined the 1”-2”+ piece drawer crew 😉 It drives my husband bonkers, but I also do that with my fabrics for sewing as well, so he’s fairly used to it now lol.
Me who goes through the scrap drawer and tries to get a piece that is slightly larger than the piece I am cutting. Also normally put a shape around the design to have a smaller space to weed.
I'm a Cricut beginner (a Cricinner??? nope.) , and I appreciate these videos that are full of helpful tips and pointers. These videos lead to my better understanding of the Cricut, so I end up with better result, more efficiently and with out the frustration. Thank you!
Loved the kerning tip. As a former typesetter, I always notice when words are spread too far. You’re right when you say that proper kerning can give a design a finished, professional look. I also appreciated the tip to burnish the cut design before weeding. Makes a lot of sense
I would add "stop weeding small letters from the outside first". Especially with smaller letters, if you weed the inside pieces first you're less likely to push the letter out of place because it still has the outside vinyl to keep it from shifting. GREAT tutorial!! Thanks so much for preaching the kerning message lol! :)
Thanks for getting right to it instead of 5 minutes of talking before showing what you intend to show. Didn't fastforward any of the video and got lots of great tips. Thank you!
I agree and highly appreciated. All these RUclipsrs with their hockey intro videos and music and logo and clever transitions. They think it makes them look like pros but it's just annoying, a waste of my time, and makes them look like wannabes.
Thank you so much for the reminder about not unloading before verifying that the cut is correct. I have a brand new Maker 3. My environment is a little cool where I work. The very 1st test cut was incomplete. Weeding was a challenge. I figured out that I either need to increase the pressure or repeat the cut without unloading. Before getting the new machine, I had been using the Cricut Joy and never really had this problem. I really enjoy your RUclips videos and all of the tips your channel has to offer. Thanks again!
Tanner of @Makers Gonna Learn, THANK YOU!!! Your tutorials are always fun & informative. I'd like to share with you, something I figured out after some very frustrating weeds, that go along with your tricks with weeding vinyl from the mat. I have actually started adding a cut line around my project, that way I know I'm not going to accidently cut a small piece of a letter or item off. On big weeding projects, I've also added some inside the design so I'm not fighting & having to trim the vinyl waste while trying to weed. It's been a game changer for me. I also keep a few of the individual alcohol pads in my tray for quick wipe downs of those blades. I loved the felt trick, that was awesome!!! I've always rolled my mat when it had paper, I like your way better.!
Pro Tip! For large straight cuts, a sewing rotary cutter works beautifully. I haven't tested it on anything thicker than foam board, but it seems to work well with even thick materials. You can get more leverage than a handheld craft knife!
OMG where have you been all my crafting life??? This is my first time watching you and I have learned so much! can't wait to go and watch your previous videos. Absorbing your information like a sponge! thank you Thank You THANK YOU!!!
Glad Press and Seal works amazing for the felt trick to save the mat. You just pull out how much you need and tear it off right out of the box. I've never thought about using contact paper before. Im going to run some numbers and do whichever will save me the most money. Saving 5 cents here and there ends up adding up to a new blade pretty quick, lol. Jeeez, I'm cheap! What happened to me😅!
Thank you so much! You saved my relationship. I thought it was over. After 4 years I stopped using my cricut and figured it was time for a breakup. Your video was like vinyl therapy and I fell in love with my machine all over again. Thank you Dr Cricut !
Thank you! I just bought a used Joy, never used because she didn't know how to use it, and I have no clue about it either. I've been delaying getting a machine but it was such a good deal for me. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos like this to help me get started. I don't have any of the tools, materials, etc so the advice about other brands of vinyl is so so helpful! I'm glad I found this channel first, before I go spend too much money!
Don't buy the smart vinyl just cut straps of full size vinyl with paper cutter or scissors. Yes for card making buy a card matt. You can cut card fronts with the card closed. If you don't want to use the card matt buy a Dollar Tree sticky matt and make cards that fold down from the top. I still use all of my older Provo Craft tools with my Cricut Maker like paper trimmers and punches and die cutters.
I had my Cricut Explore sitting on my desk for over a year before I even opened the box! I called Joanne’s and had a personal instructor get me started. It was the best $100 spent (90 minutes lesson)!
Great tips! I just tried the foil trick as I was having trouble cutting . . . small letters out of vinyl. I tried using glitter HTV but that was an issue as well. Will try regular HTV. Warning for those who customize their settings: spent hours with Cricut Tech Support last week. When I customized my setting pressure and changed tools, it didnt work. I discovered this when I got tired of changing from Fine Point Blade to Rotary while cutting a lot of bonded cotton fabric. It worked okay until I closed Design Space and then opened it the next day. The rotary cutter didn't even cut the paper let alone the fabric. While it showed the proper tool and pressure in the list, when I clicked to edit, the pressure bar gauge was for the fine point blade. We tried a bunch of things, including uninstalling Design Space. Nothing fixed the glitch. I was able to get around it by creating a new material setting. But every time I closed and reopened DS, I had to recreate the tool again. Just a heads up. As of right now, it still isn't fixed.
Hi! I don’t have a Cricut. I don’t have plans to get one right now. I love this tutorial! It’s a good introduction. I can also tell you really know your stuff. I just wanted to mention about eyeballing something. When you get something perfect it pops. It looks so professional. Take good care.
I’ve had a few weird shaped blanks. I’ve found it easiest to just snapped a photo of it, crop that photo to the edge so I can accurately measure and size it, then I upload that photo to design space to use as a guide.
I am so proud of you Tanner! I remember when you were the occasional guest with Megan Elizabeth. The Lord has so blessed both your professional and personal life in the ensuing years! Keep on keeping on, not only enjoying the blessings but giving the Lord the credit!
@krystaljah haha! Not slow at all. It's a HUGE learning curve!! Thank God for YT 😂 Basically, instead having to reload the mat with one colour at a time and do 4 separate cuts, 4 times; put a square of vinyl on each corner with each different colour that you want. Putting them in the corner means you don't have to fiddle with measurements etc. It's all done in one hit since you've told it to cut each heart all from the same mat. I keep having to remind myself it's not a printer & it doesn't know or care what I'm putting on the mat. It's purely only cutting lines. My materials only just arrived yesterday, so I'm ready to have a crack ❤ Happy creating ❤
Thank you so much for these tips!! I have been doing this for about 3 years now & I didn't know half of these tips!! It's true, you do learn something new everyday!! Love my machine!! 💘 Thank you!!
I got my Cricut maker 3 yesterday and I’m SO GLAD I found your channel! Absolutely loving spacing out the vinyl in different corners! And the kerning. Actually all of it. Thank you! New subscriber right here. So excited 🙏 🎉
I learn so much from you. It has been awhile since I have used my Cricut but I am teaching my new boyfriend how to use mine and we have been enjoying learning new things together. Thank you again.
A tip I have is to remove your blade if you have been cutting glitter paper and use a paper clip to remove glitter from I side the blade housing as it can clog up and stop the blade from rotating smoothly. I put a piece of double stick tape on the paper clip and just cut away the extra. The glitter will stick to the paper clip and come out of the housing easily.
Your a crack-up! I like you. I bought my Cricket 15-20 years ago and used it once.I think I'm ready to finally learn how to use it lol. I'm 67. Can you teach an old dog new tricks??? Good luck lol.
I like to leave my vinyl long when I cut with the cricut. I leave the roll attached. Recently been cutting the excess off with an extra rotary cutter that I am not too precious about. Helps me not waste vinyl. Also really make sure that the mat is all the way pushed in before you let it start cutting. Take it out and reload if it didn't load properly the first time.
I knew about the first tip but it has saved me so many times, I think it absolutely deserves the first mention. But the second and third tips are new to me but they might give me a chance to like cutting vinyl.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm starting my creative side up again and this is showing me all the lil tips and tricks. I appreciate you very much.
OMG!!!! New subbie here. Very informative video, with some great tricks and tips. Instructions were very clear and concise. I could listen to your voice all day. Idk, it’s just very soothing and calming, and you have a very welcoming and playful aura. Keep ‘em coming, I have a lot to learn😂😂😂. God bless!❤❤
I don't have a Cricut machine yet but I'm looking into getting one here soon. I'll be sure to use these tips, thank you for sharing them. I think I'll be coming back here for more Cricut lessons and tips ☺
Thank you for the tips. I'm new to cricut and this helps so much. I used transparent contact paper you can buy at your local stores for transfer tape and works like a charm.
Great tips! Very simple and common sense, yet we all might not think of these. Thanks for teaching me some great new ways I will be implementing going forward! 😁
As a first time maker 3 users this video was exceptionally helpful. Thank you for all the wonderful tips of the “do nots”. Good to know earlier rather than later.
WHAT?!! THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!! BELEIVVE ME! I WILL START DOING THIS! BECAUSE, I BEEN FREAKING OUT WHY MY IMAGES DON'T GET CUT ALL THE WAY AND I BEEN CHANGING BLADES A LOT! IT WILL START DOING THIS SUGGESTION!!! WOW!! OKAY THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Thank you SO much! I learned many new things. Your video was perfect timing, as I’ve a new project & many of your “do insteads” will make it go much easier!!!! 😊
I have always wanted to actually take the time to really find someone to teach me the ins and outs I enjoy your your uplifting spirit and I think this could be fun ty ty ty you've made my day
Just found you Tanner and subscribed! Love your style! I have had multiple Cricut machines for over 10 years and still learned something and reminded me of other tips.
When I’m kerning my letters (or moving other objects) in design space, I like to use the arrow buttons to move the letters, because my hands aren’t super steady. When I try dragging them, I usually end up going too far or not far enough. I’ll drag things until they’re close, then use the arrow buttons for fine tuning. Thanks for some great tips! 😊
If you have any input, it would be nice to be able to change the number of passes (1x 2x 3x) on the cutting window so that if there is a missed spot, it doesn't have to go through the whole routine...just one more cut to get through those little missed spots.
This video was great! I always wondered how people were able to cut different colors on one mat. I'll give the four corners technique a try. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I am still newish to Cricut, I got mine in December of last year. Love all of the information that I have been able to find as of yet, but this was super helpful, thanks again.
I think it’s wonderful you are exploring a new journey! I actually started working with miniatures a few months ago. I have been following you on your crochet journey and now will be interested in this new 1:12 journey! ❤️
Instead of cutting the unused vinyl off, add a border around what you're cutting so that you can just peel off the margin around the cut item, leaving the backing in place and reducing things a step if you are doing bulk runs.
Great video, Thanks! Question, you combined your letters and then welded...do you have to combine (in general) before welding or can you just weld? I've welded shapes together, have not done lettering yet. Just curious if I should combine before welding anything. Relatively new to Design Space and trying to learn things the correct way. Thanks!
if you combine first and don't like it you can undo and adjust your design, welding is permanent so combine gives you the chance to inspect you project first.
Im relatively new to cricut crafting. When using the HTV to make small letters to apply to acrylic for example, do you need to ise a heat source? If so what should i use? Thank you!
Omg, I came across this video by mistake. But I'm so glad I did this makes so much sense. This has been so very helpful! Thank you much tanner! Your a godsend so many tricks you have shared I had no clue about. I'm so glad I found you. Omg I feel like it's Christmas 🎄 and i just won a fabulous prize 🎉. Sincerely thank you
Thank you so very much for sharing all of your helpful and great tips! I have learned so much already from you since finding your videos last week! You are a gem! ❤
Awesome video! Can I use HTV on a piece of quilting cotton ? I make totes out of quilting cotton and I want to put a name on the tote. They are not con as. They are a thin cotton. Almost like a thin dress shirt cotton. Will the heat be too much for the cotton? Will the vinyl stay on this type of cotton? Thanks for your help. Love your channel ! 😊😊
Thanks for this helpful video. I just have a quick question on that last part. How do I apply HTV to no fabric surfaces? Would I need a heat gun or something like that?
Lol... I agree. I save and use every tiny scrap of vinyl. It has proven useful far too many times to throw away anything and I would never put a piece of vinyl on that much larger then needed. Use the grid and move the design to fit in grid as evenly as possible so can just measure out to exact space.

Yes! You are my hero, thank you for teaching the importance of kerning! ❤ Elevates the look from “Homemade” to “Pro.”
You are so welcome!

It drives my husband bonkers, but I also do that with my fabrics for sewing as well, so he’s fairly used to it now lol.
Those scrap pieces have come in handy for projects for me!
I cut my material 1" larger than my project. Haven't had a problem yet and it saves material.
I have made a whole shirt with scraps
Me who goes through the scrap drawer and tries to get a piece that is slightly larger than the piece I am cutting. Also normally put a shape around the design to have a smaller space to weed.
I have a whole bin of scraps from the excess! The scrap bin has saved me more times than I can count when I need just a tiny piece for a project!
The #1 thing I need to stop doing with my Cricut is: stop leaving it unplugged collecting dust.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤭
Me too 😂
Me toooo

I put a weeding box around my vinyl so the outside is all intact for next use..
I do the same
I have done the same. Another video showed that and I was like WHAT? Haha game changer. Or I cut a piece the size I need
Will HTV work on card stock?? For using small letters
@@angelikakopek yup..
I watched a video on it..
Can’t remember who made it…
Brilliant!❤

LOVE THIS! I've also found that a square quilting ruler works really well to get things even and centered :)
Yes! Thank you!
That felt hack was brilliant! And I wholeheartedly agree about not using Cricut vinyls. More expensive and not as good.
Yes!! I've been using Siser Easy weed HTV to make pinnies for my daughters lacrosse team. That is is like BUTTAH!!! 🎉🤩
but what is "contact paper", please?
Tanner of @Makers Gonna Learn, THANK YOU!!! Your tutorials are always fun & informative. i wish id seen this before i cut my 60cm project. happy to know about tip 1 now though
Burnish before weeding- what a concept. Who knew? I have never heard this before. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
I can't imagine how must easier it would have been to weed the minecraft shirt i made with this
Pro Tip! For large straight cuts, a sewing rotary cutter works beautifully. I haven't tested it on anything thicker than foam board, but it seems to work well with even thick materials. You can get more leverage than a handheld craft knife!
I have a little one that I found at dollar tree
OMG where have you been all my crafting life??? This is my first time watching you and I have learned so much! can't wait to go and watch your previous videos. Absorbing your information like a sponge! thank you Thank You THANK YOU!!!
At 9:52 is brilliant! So much easier than putting them side by side and crossing your fingers hoping you placed the vinyl perfectly.
Glad you think so!
You can add a boarder box around your design in design space so make saving the extra vinyl easier.
I’ve been using Press N Seal for a long time - works perfectly when applying vinyl to balloons (or any round surface)!
Thank you so much! You saved my relationship. I thought it was over. After 4 years I stopped using my cricut and figured it was time for a breakup. Your video was like vinyl therapy and I fell in love with my machine all over again. Thank you Dr Cricut !
Boy am I glad I'm not married to you.
@TheLarryBrown umm I was referring to my love hate relationship with my cricut ;) not a human
I had my Cricut Explore sitting on my desk for over a year before I even opened the box! I called Joanne’s and had a personal instructor get me started. It was the best $100 spent (90 minutes lesson)!
This was a great tutorial. I do mostly paper crafting with my Cricut but still learned a lot! Thank you for all that you do.
You're welcome!
OMG! I never thought you could weed on the mat! I am brand new to Cricut and so much to learn. Love your video for tips on making it easier!
Omg I’ve had my cricut just under a year and this was sooooo helpful! The kerning?? Tip was my favourite thank you!
Right! Totally explained Kerning and Welding in 2 minutes.. I get it now!
Thank you so much!
You're the sweetest! Thank you so much!❤
LOVE the four hearts example. I only just received a Cricut for my bday; this is a great tip for newbies like me ❤
Just saw the felt tip too. You're a star!!! Saves time & $$ with mat care/replacement 🫶🏽
Thank you so much!
Maybe I'm slow but I didn't understand the 4 heart thing lol maybe when I start using my cricut I'll get what he was explaining.
@krystaljah haha! Not slow at all. It's a HUGE learning curve!! Thank God for YT 😂
Basically, instead having to reload the mat with one colour at a time and do 4 separate cuts, 4 times; put a square of vinyl on each corner with each different colour that you want. Putting them in the corner means you don't have to fiddle with measurements etc. It's all done in one hit since you've told it to cut each heart all from the same mat.

Love this video. Great "to the point" helpful tips without the chit chat. Thank you
So glad you love it!
Exactly!
Wish I watched this five minutes ago! Your first tip would have saved me so much
Thank you! I always use a weeding box before cutting. (Therefore I don’t have to cut around my design after)
That's a great idea!
These are BY FAR the best tips I have ever seen! Thank you sooooooo much❤
Thank you so much for these tips!! I have been doing this for about 3 years now & I didn't know half of these tips!! It's true, you do learn something new everyday!! Love my machine!! 💘 Thank you!!
You're so welcome!
Your so passionate about the “don’ts”, lol. U say it so nicely, with just a tad of saltiness, I think we all needed this, hee hee❤
I feel like I was directly being called out..LOL Stop EYEBALLING.. LMAO!!😇
I got my Cricut maker 3 yesterday and I’m SO GLAD I found your channel! Absolutely loving spacing out the vinyl in different corners! And the kerning. Actually all of it. Thank you! New subscriber right here. So excited 🙏 🎉
Woohoo!!!
Yes. After wasting a bunch, I learned to save my vinyl and card stock. Love all the tips!
Thanks for watching!
I learn so much from you. It has been awhile since I have used my Cricut but I am teaching my new boyfriend how to use mine and we have been enjoying learning new things together. Thank you again.
Wonderful!❤
Great beginner tips! Thanks!
In stead of eyeballing the size, Just make a picture of the blanc you are using and resize it in DS to the actual, real size. Works great!
I’ve been using my Cricut for years, but I still learned 3 new tricks! Thanks! In regards to contact paper on the felt, can you use transfer tape?
I love watching your informative videos. I have learned so much. But I especially appreciate your attitude and beautiful smile. Thank you.
Just getting into my CRICUT and this video was super helpful! Looking forward to watching more of your videos! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I knew about the first tip but it has saved me so many times, I think it absolutely deserves the first mention. But the second and third tips are new to me but they might give me a chance to like cutting vinyl.
The felt on the contact paper...🤯🤯🤯
AWESOME TIP!!!
Huh, burnish before weeding...brilliant. Also, HTV over vinyl so helpful. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Long time Cricut creator here, thank you for these tips! I’ve learned some news things!
You are so welcome!
Love your awesome video! Great info! You are too smart, thanks for sharing!
So glad you love it!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm starting my creative side up again and this is showing me all the lil tips and tricks. I appreciate you very much.
You are so welcome!
You can also add a frame around your design and completely skip the craft knife.
Best tip I've read, it seems so obvious now!
Please tell me where you got the baskets behind you and the size that is holding your vinyl.
Maybe try Temu.
I have to agree, I really enjoyed my crafts when I started measuring with my measuring tape, it saves alot of time getting it right the first time.
You can add a box around every design and attach it before you make it. That will do the same thing as cutting it out before cutting.
I add a square/circle, etc outline around my design to save vinyl. It self frames so I can weed right away with no loss as the border is already cut.
Thank you so much. I am still nervous but I’m trying. Love watching you
Thanks, Tanner! You rock!
Thank you for the tips. I'm new to cricut and this helps so much. I used transparent contact paper you can buy at your local stores for transfer tape and works like a charm.
Wonderful!
Yes, it does work!!!
Felt Trick was genius! I knew the rest, but this one.......GOLDEN!
buying a centerpoint tape measure is an awesome idea too!
Love the heat transfer vinyl tip! I love how much easier that is to use. I’m going to try it. Love this channel❤️
Thanks so much!!!
So if you use heat vinyl on wood, do you iron/heat press it?
Great tips! Very simple and common sense, yet we all might not think of these. Thanks for teaching me some great new ways I will be implementing going forward! 😁
Thank you, Tanner! I learned some great tips, my favorite was the felt!
You're welcome!
OMG I've Had my Cricut for 3 years and these were great!!!! Thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
As a first time maker 3 users this video was exceptionally helpful. Thank you for all the wonderful tips of the “do nots”. Good to know earlier rather than later.

heat transfer vinyl for small letter is new to me. I will have to try.
I was thinking the same thing. I had no idea

Great tip honestly never thought of that
Wonderful video for us newbies! Thank you!
I just got my lil joy, just practicing and trying to learn, these were great tips Thank you. What are some of the other brands do you use?
This video was great! I always wondered how people were able to cut different colors on one mat. I'll give the four corners technique a try. Thanks for sharing!
I didn't g3t it but again I haven't used my cricut...I mean if it's only cutting how does it get the 4 colors? Mmm maybe I'm slow
Get video. ❤ Very informative to help crafters perfect their craft.
I have come along way in 2 years just by watching your videos
Thank you 😅
Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I am still newish to Cricut, I got mine in December of last year. Love all of the information that I have been able to find as of yet, but this was super helpful, thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
I think it’s wonderful you are exploring a new journey! I actually started working with miniatures a few months ago. I have been following you on your crochet journey and now will be interested in this new 1:12 journey! ❤️
Wow, you just touched on so many points that I needed, all in one video. Thank you so much. This video is amazing.
You're so welcome!
Man I wish I watched this before my Christmas ornaments project🤦🏼♀️
Thank you!
Hi Tanner. Question….i have cricut joy which uses smart vinyl. Should I just use regular vinyl instead given one of the tips you gave.
Thank you for the amazing tips .really enjoy all of your video back when and even more now ,thank you again.
So glad you enjoy them!
Sincerely thank you
You're so welcome!
Thank you so very much for sharing all of your helpful and great tips! I have learned so much already from you since finding your videos last week! You are a gem! ❤
You are always welcome!
Hey, Tanner, I'm wondering will the felt hack work for fabric?
Lol... I agree. I save and use every tiny scrap of vinyl. It has proven useful far too many times to throw away anything and I would never put a piece of vinyl on that much larger then needed. Use the grid and move the design to fit in grid as evenly as possible so can just measure out to exact space.
Loved the info you provided. Answered a lot of my questions. Great job.
Great to hear!
the newish off-set feature in DS is great for trying this out, you can make small margins and see the accuracy instantly
