After having been a UFC fan for several years, my intro to him (and the Pride: Grand Prix tournaments) was from the first time Rogan talked about him on his podcast. I remember two things. First, he talked about the fight with Nogueira, and the insane ground & pound, especially when Nog was in the corner, eating the viscous blasts Fedor was raining down on him. The second story was about the Randleman fight, which had “the slam”, and the kimora that Fedor secured right after being dumped on his head. I had been listening to the episode, and had to wait until I got home to find those fights on RUclips. After hearing Rogan describe it, and as crazy as he made it sound, I was wondering if it was actually as bonkers as he had said it was. Well, he was right. When I was watching both of those fights, it was the first time I experienced a bit of anxiety from how brutal some of the action was. Plus, Pride rules allowed the stomps & kicks to the head, and the crowds in Japan are eerily quiet during the fights, so that definitely ratcheted up the brutality of the sport, compared to what I was used to seeing. Oddly enough, the kimora Fedor submitted was the toughest part to witness. He really wrenched Randleman’s arm & elbow, and in the quiet arena, the scream he yelled out in pain echoed throughout the building. Instantly, I was a fan, and watched a few more of his fights, a highlight reel, and a great mini-documentary on his mysterious training regiment, and the mystique of his rustic, hardened by the elements & Cold War era type lifestyle. A must watch, for any fan of Fedor, or mma in general.
Btw, I somehow hadn’t seen the fight, or any of the footage from his fight with Herring, until just now. Holy shit, was that an epic, one-sided ass-kicking. That was a career altering fight for Herring, who quickly learned how badly outclassed he was, and wore it smeared all over his face. So scary!

I went to his fight in NJ vs Silvia which he lost. We were all so down.
Fedor would have been more dominant (record wise) if he fought smarter. In his early and mid career he got a ton of submissions. Then he started to fall in love with his punching and went away from grappling and even kicking. He became one-:dimensional.

He's my GOAT. No one goes on a 10 year win streak like that at HW. He did it being very undersized for a HW and he never played it safe. He lost much of his athleticism but none of his punching speed as he got older. He's been way past his prime for quite some time now but i'm glad he came back and fought. His fights are always entertaining.

You think Randleman (multi time NCAA champion wrestler) or Matt Lindland (Olympic silver medalist and World Champion in wrestling) would agree to a fixed fight? How about UFC HW champ Mark Coleman (Olympic wrestler and 2nd in world championship)? Coleman FREAKED OUT when he lost to Fedor.

I remember Fedor being so unbelievably respectful of everyone, and showing true concern and respect for other fighters who he thought he might've hurt during the fight. The way he let go of Randleman's arm, after the submission, holding it, and placing it in a position next to his body, hoping he wasn't hurt, and not wanting to cause any damage. I love how Randleman picked him up, and put him over his shoulder, holding his arm up, showing how much respect he had for Fedor. That big smile that came over Fedor's face was great! I can't remember what Fedor said verbatim about Fujita's punch, but it was something to the effect that he had never been hit that hard in his life, and said he hit like a mule! There will never be another Fedor. Poise, confidence, humble, kind, respectful, and an insanely talented fighter. I'm happy to have watched him through all the years, from the beginning. Jon Jones may be a badass, but he, as far as being the GOAT, no. Fedor emobodied what a GOAT REALLY is.

I started watching MMA with my Dad around 2011, and as much as I liked following the legendary champs at that point in time like Anderson Silva, GSP, Jon Jones, Jose Aldo and the like, one of my favorite things to watch was still older clips of the Pride champs (pre-UFC absorption) like Fedor and Wanderlei in their prime being brilliant savages in the ring.

He would always talk to my dad about his fights and my dad remembers him saying that fighting Fedor was like fighting 2 guys that are both hitting you the hardest you’ve ever been hit in your life. Gary Goodridge now has all but crippling CTE and I’ll still see him around town from time to time. Makes my dad sad to see him because of the man he remembers being close with at work.
