He was scary to face standing and was a monster in the clinch, and now was a monster on the ground.
Yeah, anyone that says otherwise hasn't a clue what they're talking about. He was as close to the REAL warrior that's in Bloodsport. Frank Dux, from what I understand, wasn't close to it. I would wage $1,000 on the fact that Bas would tear Frank Duxs head off. Also. In Pancrase, or Shoot Fighting is another term for it, they use palms of the hand and open slaps to the head and neck. Bas would knock people out with slaps and palm strikes. I've heard his punching to the head us just a sure KO.
Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do which was a combination of boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, and others. The core of JKD was in Lee's words “Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation." Bas Rutten is undeniably one of the baddest Pancrase fighters ever to do it, but "first true" mixed martial artist he was not.
@@CruelWorldVids1 The difference is Bas Rutten really was a fighter and Bruce Lee was an actor. Im not downgrading Bruce Lee because he took the best things from those different martial arts to create an affective style of self defense. When Bas learned about the groundgame there was no completer fighter than him. Rickson Gracie at that time was considered the toughest and most complete fighter in the world but he did not want to fight Bas. Even when Bas publicly challenged Rickson the Gracies declined.
One of the most respectful and humble fighters. When he made mistakes he owned up to them but he always worked to better himself. Always caring about not going to far with his opponents always checking to see if they were OK. Hands down when of my top 3 fighters of all time.
I watched Bas throughout his career. He never backed down or gave up. He was relentless even when totally gassed, and always found a way to dig a bit deeper as was shown in the final fight shown here. Bas had the most wicked liver kicks and palm strikes of any fighter before or since imho.
One of my nephews trained in one of Bas Rutten's mma gyms a few years back. I got to meet him once. I can't say he was humble but he was very cool. Very confident. I could feel that I was in the presence of a champion, for sure.
Didn’t realize how good Bas was at jujitsu. Had heard his palm heal strikes were like hammer blows, and his kicks and knees striking was like being hit by a car. He has to be one of if not the best fighters in history.
He was far from the best, had only a few mma fights where he dis well.Pancrase featured a lot of faked matches, you can clearly see it in grappling exchanges.Nobody considers pancrase real mma.
He's amazing! Every time I have seen him on TV and he was approached by a commentator he is a nice guy. He is a man outside the ring and a warrior in it. So many people in this sport can't do that.
Bas was on every steroids and more known to man. I dont see how you can have any respect for people who used performance drugs even though all of them could be on drugs .
This is why I love RUclips, It's the best place to go and see people excel at what they do. I have never heard of Bas Rutten but really enjoyed watching this video of a man who was the best at what he did. Awe inspiring!
If you never saw any of his fights, you don’t know what you missed! You should look some of them up. If you’re a true fight fan, you’ll love them! You can thank me later!😀
He was the first mma fighter I invested in as a fan. One if the greatest ever and a pioneer. I remember when he released that video about how to win a bar fight too. Absolutely hilarious but lethal too. I messaged him around that time on an email and he replied to me as cool and polite as you could get. Great guy.
Man has incredible combat IQ and is such an impressive technical fighter. His physicality doesn't hurt, but his sheer intelligence makes him one of the best there is.
I remember seeing him on a compilation VHS from blockbuster as a kid...have watched MMA ever since...I wonder how many fans of MMA that's true for..my bet its alot...he deserves more praise than he gets for this!
@BEWARE OF SEEKER FRIENDLY CHURCHES JESUS IS COMING why would you even say that? Is there some specific msg you want ppl to take from it? There must be, since you're spamming it in places where it makes zero sense.
My dad had me watching Rutten as long as I can remember. He was a extremely well rounded fighter. For the people who haven't see a lot of his stuff, do yourself a favor and look into him. We'll worth it.
Bas... one of the greatest. people forget about the days before UFC and other similar MMA organizations. I talk about Marco Ruas and Vanderlei who fought in underground circuits before this sport went mainstream like it is today. Hats off to you El Guapo Mr. Rutten. true warrior.
@BasRutten... I sure miss you on Axis TV when you use to cover all the fights .. Your legend and true gentlemen sir. I saw you in Los Angeles once in the early 2000's and I'm handicap ♿️ and you stood by the door to allow me to enter the Hotel. It was a heavy door and I was greatful. I thanked you and you simply did a hiya sound and gave me two thumbs 👍🏽 up. We didn't have phone cameras back then but I have the memory in my head forever. Truly a wonderful guy. Take care and in your famous words GODSPEED .. For me I just say God Bless brother 🙏🏼 take care and yes this video was Bloody Fantastic and you were truly an awesome fighter Bas ✌🏽
Here's what I see. A true professional fighter. Trained, strong, durable, and very very intelligent. More importantly though, he is composed. He allows his intellect to drive the use of his physical gifts rather than emotion. There's no rage, no loss of composure when he finds himself in a more vulnerable position. Though the emotions are obviously present, his mind controls them.
At meet and greet events he stays well after the time allotted because he makes sure to be personal with everyone who wishes to interact with him. Charismatic, kind (unless you're fighting), and genuinely funny guy. No doubt my favorite MMA athlete inside and out of the ring by a mile. Check out his tutorial videos, the dude is hilarious.
You have earned the respect of many! Your skill in your profession is inspirational. You define the statement: Winners don't quit, and quitters don't win! Thank you for showing your entertaining style and tenacity.
I have seen this guy promoting karate combat. My initial impression was that he was a good mma kind of ufc fighter. This is beyond that. I didnt even think this combat sport excisted, let alone that he was a champion of one of the most brutal sport with guys that seems to eat nails for breakfast
I did full contact karate which was basically kickboxing proper sparring with punches and kicks to the head we also could enter karate competition, not all karate is usless in a fight
I wasn't an mma fan at the time. To be honest, the first time I saw BasRutten was in the movie Boom. I loved his character in the movie, then I saw him on Joe Rogan and realized, this guy is a legend. Did a deep dive on his career and I'm now a huge fan. What a monster! Now I'm a big fan of mma.
I remember watching Bas fight from early on, the man is one of the best fighters I've ever seen. Technical, powerful, fast and a true old school warrior when it comes to honour in the ring.
The man was on the juice and juiced up top his teeth . I dont get impressed by people who have to supercharge their body with synthetic stuff to perform. I know, you believe he was natural and fought for 25 minutes without breaking a sweat and was as energized in his last minute as his first but, it doesnt take genius to see that he was on things that were meant for horse
Bas you were incredible! One of the greatest sportsman that ever lived. Any long time fight fan knows who you are and what you brought to the sport. We appreciate all you've done and wish you all the best.
@Charles Martell Hence me saying "we wish you all the best". Not "you will be missed". I said you "were incredible" because he doesn't compete anymore...
Robert here, Bas Rutten is the reason I broke away from ordinary defending. Breathing and hitting with power and blows everything. Got rid of bullies at the gym, permanently. Thank you Bas Rutten, this documentary is perfect, God Speed.
I have always thought that Bas is one of the best fighters ever. His winning streak at the end of his career is up there with the best. He also transitioned from a pure striker to a well rounded modern style MMA fighter.
That was just an awesome video and display of what REAL fighting is. I never really followed Bas Rutten but after watching this he without a doubt was probably the best and most viscous fighter of his time. LOVED IT thanks for sharing.
Great collection of Bas fights. The man is a world class legend! Narration was perfect. Frank Shamrock, also a class act, made for a hell of a mix. Excellant work here. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
One of the most dangerous fighters ever. LYING SPINELESS SELF-SERVING GOP POLITICIANS are far more dangerous! Their power derived from tens of millions of misinformed fearful angry mostly white voters! A cult voting base, brainwashed by 40+ years of R-W media's consistent BS. Dems are NOT socialists,
Most people who know something about the history of mixed martial arts know that Bad was beaten several times early in his career by people with jujitsu experience. People who could go for the neck or an arm lock or an ankle or knee continued to beat him for a while until he decided to figure out how to do it himself. Then he became so much deadlier.
Crazy I never heard of this man till now, and Brutal is an accurate discription of his attacks. The respect they show during those fights is great to see. The Japanese fighters have amazing will to keep going no matter what, seriously impressive.
Rutten is constantly observing, thinking and testing defenses.Adapting to his opponent and striking with precision. His distractions are legendary. His fights and instruction are 🔥 🔥 🔥.

Bas Rutten is a hall of famer, a champion and still has his brain intact with no signs of CTE. Every time I see him I think of Colin Ferrel as bowlseye
Good to read that Bas has all his marbles after an obviously brutal career in MMA. Unfortunately, not coincidentally FAAAAR too high a percentage of retired MMA fighters and boxers do end up with CTE, Dementia, Parkinson's, etc., so it's good to know Bas is in relatively good health.
I have never heard of Pancrase but I agree with the narrator that this was an elite, top tier fighting organization! Holy shit those liver shots were BRUTAL!! Totally underused technique in today's UFC and others.
Its like wwe in usa. Staged but at early days people believed in it. Look at all Bas oponents. Pure joke. Its like Ronaldo between players from Slovakia. No hate to Slovakia of course
@@porscheclub96 it wasnt totally legit shooting, there were some arranged fights.Dan never fought in pancrase and ken was a basic grappler in those days. The dude is right bas fought a bunch of nobodys but was elite himself.Certainly pancrase was nothing like WWE,everyone could fight to some degree.

Fantastic video compilation. Bas is a warrior with integrity, respect for his opponents and does not look for excuses/shortcuts. One of the best of all time.
One of my deepest regrets as a fight fan, was that Pacrease was so hard to view in America. Imagine how much more respect(he already gets a ton) Bas Rutton would get in the fight game had his great Pacrease fights been seen in America.
I've known of him for many years, glad he finally has gotten the respect and honour he deserved, Bas Rutten is in my opinion the most complete and devastating fighter I’ve ever witnessed, Rutten reminds me of a famous quote from the immortal Bruce Lee - "When the opponent expands, I contract when he contracts, I expand, and when there is an opportunity, I do not hit, it hits all by itself" Rutten was/and is a master of his art.
Wow, Bruce is now elevated to God-like status? Immortal? LOL. For a 1.72 m, 64 kg giant of a myth, where is his succession of ring fights to even say his name in the same breath as Rutten? Bruce wasn't even a good screen actor, but it was exciting to watch his scripted moves though!
@@badger297 Bas was a physical monster. But people like Bruce are more interesting. Smaller guys might get an edge in P4P and all time best conversations, but we as people are more enamored by smaller fighters since we like to watch speed
Finally someone making a worthy documentary about a REAL Legend !!! One of my Heroes ! UFC looks like Kindergarten compared to old school ! Had the chance to follow at that time and it was so good ! never felt the same way since then, Thank you so much for this one !!!
One of my top 5 favorite fighters of all time. Bas was born a 1,000 years after he was supposed to. I see Bas on a battlefield somewhere swinging a giant axe with a bear skin cape. Savage.
I was a latecomer to the early fighting days of what I will call mixed martial arts. Although the rules where different and the open hand strike to the face was weird I understand why it was necessary since no protection for the hands could mean an early ending to a career from too many broken bones in the hands. I am especially grateful to see the legendary Bas Rutten in action. He is, truly, one of the greatest fighters of all time! Thank you for the video. Simply a fight fan, POMO
This was the best fighting matches I have ever seen in my life. Honor to all fighters who even enter such a brutal ring. This is true cqc combat. Loved it. These fighters have great skill and physical control over their martial art and pain threshold. Awesome stuff.
Thank you for sharing the essence of Bas Rutten. I used to watch this legend back in the day. Inspiration to last a lifetime in all aspects of the human experience. Amazing
Bas Rutten was far ahead of my time and the first time I ever saw him fight was in a video much like this and I am still just as blown away with what an incredible fighter he was and his part he played in the sport. An absolutely legend.
I never knew how dominant a fighter Bas Rutten was. Really amazing how he never backed down and was able to beat the elite fighters consistently. Plus it was old school rules. Very impressive and thank you for compiling these fights and providing such an exciting narration.
Never heard of Bas Rutten till now. Wow, what a power house! The man is a machine , made for one thing only. Destroying any thing that came his way. Incredible !
You have introduced me to one of the greatest mixed fighters of all time. I am so honored to have been able to witness a fighter such as the Great BAS RUTTEN! AVE BAS RUTTEN!
My God!! Ive never seen such brutal combat. Thank you for the intro to a whole new world. Seems by the dates that MMA is a watered down PG replica of a truely gladiatorial sport from the origins of all inclusive hand to hand combat fighting.
Bas is in every sense of the word a true LEGEND! His power, speed & knowledge of true & real fighting is legendary in every corporate league, Pancrase, K=1, Pride, Bushido & Dana White’s MMA-UFC. Mr. Rutten, you sir are a truly legend & a master of the eternal soul of the warrior! Thank you!!!
I met Mr. Rutten while teaching English to a Brazilian fighter named Marco Ruas in the 90's . Had no idea who I was being introduced to, he was such a down to earth, humble guy! What a treat to run across this video!
I just kind of stumbled upon this video and I honestly I never knew this much about Bas, but man he was a beast! I always wondered why he was so revered in the MMA world.
I like to think the commentator for this channel has talked and sounded like this since he was a child. Even when he's ordering pizza, he still speaks like this. With verbal commas. I love it.
Never heard of Bas Rutten, being Dutch myself I thank for bringing this to my attention. But really started watching kickboxing k1 at the late 90’s so that might be the reason, but what a great fighter was this man.
@@GeneralBuckNaked ofcourse I remember him, the flying Dutchman they called him. He had a devastating knee. But he didn’t stay long into the K1. He is a trainer now, I think but not 100% sure. There where some really interesting characters in K1 in those days.
Bas Rutten's RUclips channel has all of his Pancrase fights with him narrating what went on (likely where all the footage in this video came from). Shows a really interesting progression, improving his grappling skills after several losses to submissions. Great for binge watching. He also has an unintentionally hilarious self-defense "tutorial" video on RUclips that is legendary--showing is wacky sense of humor.
I knew someone who was an instructor for Krav Maga who trained with Bas Rutten. He said that Rutten told him to put 2 full length practice blocking bags to protect his leg. Then he kicked through both bags so hard that the Krav Maga instructor said it felt like his leg was snapped CLEAN THROUGH! That's how hard Bas Rutten kicked!!!
Bas Rutten is a legit legend in the MMA world & also my favorite fighter of all time. He has incredible power & determination coupled with one helluva gas tank & skills that shock every fighter he's ever gone up against. Having achieved an incredible record of 28-4, Bas won 21 of his last 22 fights, with that 22nd fight being a draw. Bas was able to have winning rematches against a loss to Masakatsu Funaki & a loss to Frank Shamrock. The only opponent he didn't successfully rematch was Ken Shamrock. I admire Bas Rutten's commitment to the sport of MMA as well as his showmanship. Bas is truly a class act!
Wow! Absolutely brutal! What an incredible fighter! That man dominated the ring, everybody who would have fought and lost must have been so relieved the day the most brutal fighter retired!
jon jones is jsut as well rounded and has a higher fight IQ imo. Only thing jones lacks that bas has is power , but he ùakes up for it withhow many tools he has in his striking arsenal . That and his wrestling is great.
First of all thank you for the education on Bas as I did not have that knowledge. Wow an amazing fighter and truly deserves a place in the hall of fame of pro wrestlers/fighters. Awesome! More more more.

One of my nephews trained in one of Bas Rutten's mma gyms a few years back. I got to meet him once. I can't say he was humble but he was very cool. Very confident. I could feel that I was in the presence of a champion, for sure.
