Beat Everyone! The Most Underrated Champion in History - Joe Calzaghe

- Опубликовано: 10 сен 2023
- Forty six victories without a single loss, a record-breaking twenty-one consecutive title defenses and a decade long reign at the top! At the turn of the centuries, Joe Calzaghe ruled the super middleweight division with an iron fist, even making Roy Jones Jr. look awkward. And yet, despite being one of the most dominant champions in history, the general public is barely familiar with this fiery Welshman’s adventures. It's time to relive the journey of the "Dragon», a musician’s son from a small village, who reached the pinnacle of fisticuffs* and rode off into the sunset undefeated.

It's mad that like for the last 6/7 fights of his career and biggest names, his hands were completely ruined and he still won them all and retired undefeated. Proper legend
He wouldn't even punch anything between fights. It's a shame his hands started to let him down so badly.
Throughout his career he fought nobody’s, he’s got Mickey Mouse belts, over hyped

I always think of Enzo Calzaghe as one of history's greatest fathers. He not only sacrificed his own chance at glory for his son but dedicated his whole life to becoming the best mentor possible for his son's passion. What a legend.
You`re goddamn right.
That's what a father is
YouAintGotNoTegridyBoi ..
Yeah, I agree. Joe certainly didn't hesitate to show how he loved his Dad and spent his whole career acknowledging his Dad's importance to his success.
Joe was a hell of a fighter. I didn't realise he had a perfect no loss career, but seeing him in action, I shouldn't be surprised.
@steiny3353 I have Welsh blood and so glad raised the Welsh dragon
Great comment dude, plus the others he mentored in the gym, he was a father figure to so many kids, who also became world/European champions at different weights
Danish here. He took out our biggest champion, but won our hearts.
…and in this documentary Kessler showed what a great fighter and a great person he is. No arrogance, genuinely speaking with Calzage with a smile.Awesome👌
Just like when Rocky Balboa defeated Ivan Drago.
Was a big fan of Kessler too as a Welsh. 🇩🇰🤝🏴
Glad we got to see that fight, my father always knew that Calzaghe was a very dangerous fight for Kessler.Great fight, Calzaghe just always had that next level to go to.Dearly missed as an entertainer in the ring @@joshuakausmann5504
I couldn’t believe I was seeing Roy get embarrassed like this but respect to joe
Literally perfection. Doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
I think he's about appropriately rated and recognized. Good fighter, did not face enough competition.
He beat everyone who got in the ring with him.
@@Iamyourboo2Agreed. Calzaghe was very good, but his competition was lacking. Lacey was largely untested, RJJ was already on the decline and the BHop fight was contentious. Not shitting on JC, he’s an ATG in UK boxing but globally, not really.
@@MelGibsonFanthat’s ridiculous - he faced all the top global contenders in his weight class, over and over and over again. Not uk contenders - global. All the best their were. Just because you can’t find enough “big names” on his opponent list makes him just a local star? He literally beat every single best fighter in his weight class around the entire world, over and over and over again.
@@MelGibsonFan: You and "lamyourboo2" should stick with Ice Skating. Boxing is not for you.
To me, a perfect boxer. Unreal cardio, great chin, great offense, great defense, fast hands, fast reflexes, could jab and move or could trade in a war. Unbelievable. I just wish he'd have gone over the pond earlier to prove his doubters wrong. I loved watching that man fight, a real pleasure.
I'm glad that you acknowledge... that he fought some of the best American's well past their prime!
@Kingqubaent not all Joe's fault, he was an awkward proposition without a huge pay day attached to him. Hopkins knew he could make more in America fighting jokers like Tarver and big names like del a Hoya, great fighter but tiny!
@Kingqubaent That wasn't Joe's fault! He wanted those fights. Jones Jr and Hopkins ducked him as long as they had the upper hand in the sport, obviously not because they thought that Joe was too good for them, but because they knew how good he was and saw little benefit in taking the risk of being made to look average by a bloke that hardly anybody in America knew anything about.
@@Kingqubaent Yes he did, but as others have said, that was not his fault. Ask yourself this, Joe was a recognised belt holder, WHY were the others not chasing him to get hold of that belt. A very high risk proposition was Joe. The only yank who put it on the line in his prime was the IBF champion Jeff Lacy, he was undefeated, young, hungry and wanted Joe's belt. But we all know how that went. Fair play to Jeff, he risked it, he never quit, a true warrior, but sadly never the same man after that beatdown, confidence and self belief completely destroyed .
He lost power later on in his career, which made people call him the slapper. Definitely should have gone over earlier.
What a beautiful documentary. I'm Mexican and always admired Joe Calzaghe. I'm glad he retired undefeated and is in great health. Regards to all the Welsh people.

@@jamestanner1564How is Wales repressed??
@@snoutysnouterson well firstly we have Welsh government and they're a joke 🤷🏼♂️🤣, no but seriously until 1967 the Welsh language was banned it's only been in recent years that it's started to become more taught and encouraged, the closure of the mines and and the treatment of the miners decimated the country just the same as it did in the north of England. I know we have the Welsh government now but that was a complete backward step for us moving away when we should have moved closer to the rest of the UK and was a result of Tony Blair knowing he would only enhance the labour vote and get backing and approval from the people who would never vote Tory after the miners strikes giving labour a guaranteed amount of historical votes because of the way Maggie treated them during the 80's. If you Google has Wales been repressed then I'm sure you'll find many examples 👍

It was an absolute joy to watch Joe fight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have rewatched his fights many times. I'm from the U.S. and Joe is my favorite boxer. I was always in his corner. He made boxing fun and exciting to watch. He was quiet outside the ring. In the ring, when he kicked it into high gear he was like a tornado. Joe's fight with Roy Jones Jr. is the only sporting event I ever paid for to watch on TV live. I was of course rooting for Joe. I really miss watching him fight. I don't watch boxing anymore.
In Wales I just showed up at the gym and had a picture with Enzo his dad/coach. He made us feel very welcome, very humble people. He just missed the mega years of middle weights in the UK catching only Eubank at the end of that era.
If only he'd been appreciated like you have and Americans woulda came here to fight him, his fear of flying and having a 60k stadium watching him he'd be so much more appreciated x
A true champion, old school fighter. Came to fight and a gentleman outside of the ring. 👍👍
What stands out the most is Joe's cardio. The guy was never tired in a fight. He could go 100 miles an hour forever. He also never neglected the body. His dad was an amazing trainer.

Yet another drug cheat allowed to getaway.
@@jamessmythe1891wat?
@@The_Reality_Filter Yep, he was a drug cheat, he may have fooled you but is not gonna fool me, important signals are that he absorbed many knockout shots without hitting the floor, looked fresh even after putting in non-stop hard work found after round, it’s an impossible task for a human body. It was the banned drugs that kept him going - strong painkillers and other PEDs.
To be fair, he wasn’t the only drug cheat, boxing has been and still is full of them - Nigel Benn, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, wilder, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and many more.
Sadly, drug cheating is unlikely to go away, the corruption dominates boxing mainly because of easy £millions to be made by both the boxers and the fixers.

The biggest issue in Calzaghe's career was Frank Warren. Calzaghe spent a decade being hidden at home fighting a string of no name opponents. He was the worst example of the 90s stay at home title holder Brits who lived off Sky money and were protected from actual challenge. It's very difficult to gauge how good Calzaghe actually was. His hand issues were also a massive factor, this video shows the great difference in his punching style. I never was and am still not a fan I'm afraid.
The best part of Joe's story, is his relationship with his Dad.

Joe Calzaghe was an absolute phenomenon. Undefeated and not just because he fought also rans like others did. The more you hurt him the stonger he got. He was like a real life Rocky (when Rocky was winning). Seemingly endless stamina and a chin that could take anything you threw at it. Nothing is more frustrating for a boxer used to knocking people down and out than to see someone getting back up and continuing to walk through their best efforts. They soon run out of ideas how to stop someone like that. Even the great Bruce Lee said he didn't like fighting that kind of guy. You'd almost have to kill them to stop them. Joe never died and he never lost. One of the best records in boxing ever. I'm amazed he doesn't get the credit he deserves sometimes.
He simply hasn't beat enough quality opponents.
He's a rare example of not being strayed by financial gain. He's an example of keeping things in house and not broadcasting it to the world. He's a rare example of a boy, Man that listened to his farther. The great Enzo RIP . I think if you are teaching young boxers you have to include joe and Enzo to their diet as it's a boxing diet that works
Steroids can do that.
Thats right all his 46 wins were just Americans @@mathieufredette3157
If he was a yank he would be another may weather or Ali. Joe Calzaghe was a unbelievable boxer fighter and incredible undefeated UNDISPUTED CHAMPION OF THE WORLD BABY ❤
To not be aware of this man as a fighter leaves me almost ashamed what an impressive career in and out of the ring with class
You didn't miss much
Fair play to you brother and I hope it inspires you into looking into more boxing and learning about other hidden gems out there because there is a treasure trove of great fights
@@jasonmoody4219what? Clearly know nothing about boxing. Hall of famer, 46 fights undefeated, 2 weight world champion, beat Kessler, Hopkins, Jones Jr and Eubank. Deluded pal
@@jasonmoody4219 nonsensical comment.
I never heard of him until this video. I was busy fishing in alaska not having access to tv. Its amazing to go undefeated and not even be talked about by the mainstream media. Everyone new about Tyson, Jones, the golden boy, etc.
He wasn't American that's why he was ignored.
Another great sportsman Thank-you for the year's of good fights and entertainment Man
All the best cheers Newzealand
Never heard of this man.. After watching this documentary I'm a fan now. He fought to the end of every fight. Definition of a true Warrior.. He definitely deserves more recognition💯💯💯
You probably weren't born 🤣...you missed all the best decades.
He stop
He had a phenomenal engine. His only weakness was that he hated flying and was very reluctant to go to the States to promote himself. Lb4lb the best fighter the Uk has produced

Never heard of him? Wow! You must have just started watching boxing or you just watch the most boring of all weight classes. The heavyweights.
Joe is one of those Boxers who put on such an awesome performance every time he got into the ring it made me laugh. Watching him Dominate opponents was at times unbelievable. His work rate was absolutely super human in appearance in many fights. Thanks Joe, you truly were a joy to watch.
Lol true.He made it look so easy. What a fighter he was!
Tyson-esque body shot followed by quick uppercut
Most accurate video description in all of RUclips! Calzaghe is one of the goats! Awsome video!
What a wonderful story. I'm very grateful for your video - delightful!
I thought everybody knew who Joe Calzaghe was back in the day. How is he underrated? Dude had insane stamina and was a master of reach and distance.
Boxing fans, we knew and know who he is.
He doesn’t get no credit he should atleast be top 10 greatest
@@SporthighlightsS1 lmao he beat 45 year old hopkins and the corpse of Roy Johnson who was already but in a body bag by Tarver and Glen Johnson, two guys he never fought lmao
@@eclisis5080what about the Lacy fight? You remember how hyped Lacy was at the time right? He was known as the mini Mike Tyson regarded as unbeatable you remember that hype right?
Um, he's ok.
I know that America wasn't interested in his weight class at the time, but this boxer was and will always be a bloody legend; one of the greatest all-round fighters to ever get into the ring.
Great boxer. As good as it gets.
I'm Welsh and immensely proud of the boxing exploits of Joe Calzaghe. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest boxers ever to don a pair of boxing gloves.
Absolutely fantastic episode.
What a career!
What a Father!
What a Legend. 🙌🏻😎💯
Joe was one of the finest boxers this little island has ever produced! The boy wasn't brash, wasn't loud, wasn't a showoff, just went about his career with no fuss. I followed him from start to finish. Of course, I had the advantage of knowing some people on the inside who would give me the occasional nudge, and a word. A phenomenal boxer, and I would never dream of betting against him, because I knew he was a winner. A legend in the minds of too few boxing fans, and an absolute gentleman.
Legend. The true GOATSE of most times.
real boxing fans know how top level joe was.
When he beat EUBANK Joe cemented his place in boxing history. Never ducked anyone
it's an absolute disgrace how many Americans and non Brits slate Joe for his weak hands.
He still beat many world champions with those glass hands, and remains the finest SMW ever
its lucky for his opponents hos hands wer fecked🤣🤣🤣
One of my favorite boxers of my lifetime. I didnt know his amazing father passed away. So much love for his son. RIP Enzo.
Wow, thank you for this. What an incredible fighter and human, what an amazing career! Almost storybook!
Used to love to watching him, he is 1 of the best ever.
Without doubt the greatest British boxer of all time, Joe had the fighting heart of a lion and a chin made of granite ❤
