    Voice acting isn't always an improvement to the characterization of people. Sometimes you just want to voice act them yourself and imagine what they sound like, which usually fits better than scrapped together VA that goes against what you would think the character would sound like. If they casted everything perfectly then sure, but I think it has a chance to make the game slightly better, with a much greater chance of making it significantly worse.

    • @gu3z185
      @gu3z185 Год назад +50

      Plus some characters are characterized super well, like Riebeck. You know he's scared of space and you know why he's there because you find notes that detail his progression through planets. Plus, he teaches you that there's actually a structural integrity meter on the scout, which is helpful.

      I agree: sometimes reading well written dialogue is more immersive than even a well acted voice line. One example would be Night in the Woods. Extremely good character writing, character design and animation make it fascinatingly clear what the individual characters would sound like. Watch any two let's plays of the game and it's almost guaranteed the players are going for the same voice. Sometimes a sketchy drawing is more interesting than an overworked hyper realistic painting because it's fun when some things are only implied and your brain fills in the blanks. This fascination would be lost if the game simply had voice actors doing the lines, even good ones.
      Plus, in Outer Wilds all the Nomai writing would either have to be voiced as well (which would take away from the mystery and give away characterization that you're supposed to slowly piece together) or only the hearthians get voice acting which would make the Nomai texts seem less important, even skippable.

  • @WillSee_
    @WillSee_ Год назад +166

    Outer Wilds got overshadowed in its release year and its a complete tragedy. Releasing only months apart from “Outer Worlds,” a much worse game with a much larger company. The games having the similar element of space travel made it even worse, so many less people even know the game exists.
    So while not as many people have played Outer Wilds, it’s whole heartedly a much better constructed game with a company who’s poured their hearts and lives into this project. It’s community might be small, but it makes up for it with lasting impacts and connections between those who found it.
    I played through this game as a spectator to a friend that I never really had anything in common with. After we worked together to finish this game we grew closer than ever.
    For that reason, I’ve never even played the game, but I love it so much from all the memories and bonding we had in it. I don’t want to boot it up and “overwrite” them with something different. That’s why every time I come across a video like this, I have one specific phrase I’ll leave in every comment section:
    “It’s the best game I’ve never played, and likely never will.”

    As much as voice acting would be cool, not sure how it'll work in the game. It might be more distracting and I personally would read the subtitles anyway XD
    As for the character personalities, it's actually cool that you'll learn more about Nomai characters and connect to them than those that you actually see in the game :D
    Lastly, autopilot not being perfect is a good thing to me. Nothing in the game is given to you. You have to earn them and use them correctly :) Also, the game is mostly a simulation so most likely it'll be really hard to actuallly program an auto-pilot with auto-avoidance.

    • @k0lpA
      @k0lpA Год назад +1

      yeah, not sure about voice acting.. Maybe for the cassette players you find that are from other hearthian explorers, so you can listen to it while you are still moving around and the characters who you talk to, but I often just read the subtitles because it's faster and with the amount of dialog in the "tutorial" part I think it could make it too long to get to space. but for the most part you will be reading nomai writtings so there could be some robotic voice coming from the translator or your character could read them out loud but it would get old pretty quick. I think the way they do it in the DLC solves the issue of "too much reading" that some people have much better.
      Also the auto-pilot avoidance system not working is told to you by slate even though most people find it out the hard way.. but I think overall it's a funny thing, I watched many streamers play the game it's always a funny moment.

    In regards to the voice acting, I do see your point. When I played, the only two characters who I felt connected to were Feldspar and Solanum. All the recurring characters you read about sort of fell by the wayside for me as I was prioritising puzzle-solving that by the time I realised there were characters in the text I'd already lost track of who was who. I don't personally think voice-acting would be the best solution (and apparently there's a very good voice-acting mod you can use), but thinking on it now I do think the game would benefit if each Nomai had a unique colour to help you remember who is who, as it took me a long while to remember names.
    And as someone else said, the DLC has barely any reading. They use these crazy things called pictures.

    Just like the rest of the game, the characterization is there but you have to go look for it. Multiple characters personalities get conveyed either through dialogue or other people’s dialogue, a lot of the time you have to go out and come back to get more options. Gabbro is a laid back and sometimes lazy hearthian that values the little things in life like taking time to relax and reflect. Chert is a smart hearthian that is the only one who gets an existential crisis from the universe ending just like you. Esker is the elder type that is lonely and wants hearthian interaction. Slate is a explosion loving guy and inventor that innovated the space exploration program, etc etc i think you get the point. I think the reason feldspar stood out to you as compared to the other characters is because most of the characters say his name with a type of respect and reverence that is hard to forget.

    Truly another amazing video as always
    Btw have your tried Rain world?
    The game has the BEST A.I in the world so far
    Basically it has an entire ecosystem
    So the enemies aren't there just to challenge you
    They actually hunt for prey and they don't despawn
    And it's really hard

    Voice Acting is literally subjective thing and preferences, the best would be having VA but also allowing players to turn it OFF, but in my opinion in this case it's not needed, Outer Wilds really don't need voice acting because it's helps to focus on yourself and gameplay/information rather than listening to someone, this game is not about good written characters (tho can't say they are too bad, they're more like just basic need to be added so the game doesn't feel empty) it's about exploration and being alone with yourself most of your time doing your things while dying and learning/discovering something new
    P.S. and yes, i personally agree with the idea that you should leave the voices to your imagination (in such cases as this game) as you imagine them instead of other people creating their versions of them for you to hear without immersing yourself into it with your imagination, and that's not about being lame or lack of work/effort and budget.

    I gotta heavy disagree on the voice acting tidbit honestly, and I can't really put my finger on why. I truthfully just think voice acting would have detracted from the atmosphere, I'm glad it was just text.

    This is one of the games I put aside in a specific category called Experience Games. It usually has the essence of misdirection or complete surprise of where the plot is going. Another factor is the breadcrumb/no direction choke. It's a good style in many cases when you have faith in the player to comfortably progress. This, Subnautica, Shadow of the Colossus, Majora's Mask, Red Dead Redemption are a select few that are in this category because you are very aware by the end that you'll never get to play it for the first time again.

    The footage you showed of your criticism of the ash twin was pretty much just you not understanding the puzzle and just trying to brute force it. Plus the voice acting thing, there is a mod to have that. But eh, I don't really like it. I guess I just like to voice the characters myself. Makes me feel more attached to them. Plus the autopilot is meant to be terrible. You are meant to get good with piloting the ship yourself.

    Voice acting probably wasn’t in the budget, also it’s just generally hard to do especially as an indie dev which is why most indie games don’t have voice acting
