I hear this point leveraged at games like Dead Cells quite often: “The upgrades make the game easier, so winning is a matter of grinding, not skill.”
First of all: the game is designed _around_ the idea that you will have those upgrades. They didn’t curate the game’s challenges and _then_ slap the upgrades on top it. The game’s difficulty was crafted with the inclusion of things like additional potion charges and a gold reimbursement in mind. It works in the same manner as leveling up in an RPG: you gain those tools so that you’re able to tackle the game’s later challenges.
As far as the point about these upgrades making the early-game areas, I have two counterarguments to this. The first is that I’d like to assert that in certain games, the early challenges are not as difficult as you believed them to be. The reason that the Prisoners’ Quarters became easier wasn’t necessarily because you invested into some permanent upgrades, but because you gained knowledge and experience of gameplay to be able to more easily tackle them. For example: when I first played Hollow Knight, I struggled against the False Knight: I died 3-4 times to him. I also _struggled_ with Hornet in Greenpath, as did many other people - some to the point of giving up on the game completely. Yet after managing to beat the game to 100%, I went back and had zero struggle against those bosses. Did I gain some permanent upgrade from finishing the game that made me deal more damage to them, or have more health going into those fights? No. I just didn’t suck at the game like I did the first time I fought them. The same can be applied to enemies in Dead Cells’ early-game areas: Zombies and Grenadiers were only hard because of your lack of experience with the game. (It is well established among the Dead Cells community that the Concierge is an inherently easy boss, and you see people like VeeDotMe refer to it as a “test dummy” for when he’s showing off a new weapon’s moveset.) These two ideas can co-exist: you can purchase upgrades that make you stronger, and have the game feel easier, simultaneously. But while you are spending your time unlocking those upgrades, you are naturally improving your skills at the game, which will inherently make you better at tackling those challenges. As the saying goes: coorelation does not equal causation.
And the second argument, is that the game resolves this problem for you by introducing higher difficulty modes, which counteract the effectiveness of many of the upgrades by stripping away health fountains, increasing the costs of items, buffing enemy stats, and for the purpose of this discussion, introducing brand new types of enemies that replace the old ones and are much more deadly. If you get caught up in a Rampager’s claws, that three-hit combo is likely to rip off nearly half your health. Have fun trying to recover from using a potion charge in the very first area on 5BC.
I feel that I should also take this to mention something else about the other difficulties: the boss cell modes, contrary to what I’ve seen some people assume of them, aren’t simply an optional, extra challenge. They are deeply woven into the full experience of Dead Cells, and this is proven by the fact that there is new, exclusive content spread across all of the boss cell difficulties that cannot be acquired on lower levels, all the way up to an extended endgame on 5BC that features an extra new area, a fourth, new boss fight, two new endings to the game, and various weapons and outfits dropped by enemies that exist nowhere else in the game. Yes, you can technically finish the game on 0BC, but it’s as much of a “completion” as saying that you finished The Binding of Isaac after beating Mom’s Heart for the first time (or whichever boss it is that gives the ending cutscene). You are missing out on _a ton_ of the game’s content - likely most of it.
I understand where you draw your conclusion about this, and I respect that it made the game less enjoyable for you. But I ask that you take my words into consideration, and maybe give the game another go. Perhaps it might change your mind.
There are a couple other points I’d also like to bring up, here. For starters, I have been around for almost the entire lifespan of Dead Cells (bought the game when it was on version 0.4), and so I’ve seen this game grow and change over time. And with that, I’d like to say that this game has had its difficulty nerfed _multiple times_ over the years. Most major content updates are released with challenges that people might describe as “nearly impossible”, and then they gradually tone things down to where it feels reasonable. The first DLC, Rise of the Giant, pushed the game’s difficulty so much higher that they dedicated the next patch just to rebalancing the new content that it added.
I’m also going to give my opinion of how Dead Cells compares to other roguelites that I’ve played. I believe that Dead Cells actually offers a much more “legitimate” challenge than games like Enter the Gungeon and The Binding of Isaac, because you can’t break the game’s difficulty anywhere near the same level. (And if you can, it’s a result of an exploit or other design choice, and it will inevitably be removed from the game in the future.) After your fourth time using the Black Hole Gun to completely negate the bosses’ attack patterns, or after seeing a dozen different videos of people straight up one-shotting Isaac bosses, it begins to feel like the items you receive as drops, in those games, play a far greater role in your ability to win over your skill and experience with the game. Sure, you don’t get those items every time, but if you keep playing for long enough you’ll run into the right RNG for it, and that seemingly allows you to bypass a big chunk of the learning curve and achieve a much easier win. I don’t need to learn how to successfully dodge all of High Dragun’s attack patterns, because I have the Fightsabre and it just deflects all bullets around me every time I reload.
You very rarely see that sort of thing in Dead Cells, because the game doesn’t have a tier system from weapons (where certain item drop far less often, but are significantly stronger that more common items), and the developers make a good point of fixing items when they become too strong. In this way, I feel like all of my victories in Dead Cells were rightfully _earned,_ since I faced roughly the same level of challenge every time. (I say “roughly” “the same level of challenge”, because as we all know, _perfect_ balance is an unattainable goal in game development.) I may be able to curate a build in Custom mode by reducing the randomization of item spawns, but I will still have to overcome the game’s challenges using that build, since there aren’t items that “don’t allow the enemies to play the game”, as it were.

I think that rouge lites like hades don't make things much easier with the tiny upgrades because they are insignificant but the ones that aren't are usually tied to skill so its not that big of a problem, deaths defiance is the exception

Honestly, really informative video. I didn't know about Rouge the game or the difference between a Rouge-Like and a Rouge-Lite before now.
I also like the analogy you use for rouge-lites involving the weightlifter and the pig.
I definitely still appreciate rouge-lite games. I wouldn't want the advancements to trivialize the game, but I appreciate the lower skill ceiling as many people like myself don't have time to sink into a game to perfect skills and memorize attack patterns. For people like me, starting from 0 may mean we never finish the game. The little skill, experience, and improvement we get from casual play is mostly mitigated by the infrequency we play at. The little overall progress we make after each attempt, which would be 0 in a rouge-like, is practically the only progress we make.
When I have time, I'd love to sink my teeth into a rouge-like, but for now, I'll have to stay in my lane.

Something I kinda liked about upgrades in roguelikes like Dead Cells, Skul, and Hades, is that it changed the overall feeling of the game. Like... Yea, it technically makes things easier, but it's less like you're suddenly able to kick the ass of everything without breaking a sweat, and more like "Now you're at the power level you're SUPPOSED to be at".
That's how I felt with something like Skul at least, That the like 160% physical and magical attack with 15% base crit change, the ability to destroy items you don't need to get gold, the Skull Type Specific Upgrades (Power skulls raking reduced damage, Balance skulls getting faster cooldowns, and Speed skulls moving and attacking faster), 1 extra life per run, & a 10 hp damage shield for 1 second whenever you switch skulls?... All of those basically brought you up to the par they expected you to be. And with those, being a little shitter who could barely even get through world 1 at first didn't feel nearly as bad. And it kept me going to actually try more of the game until I actually beat it. Meanwhile something like Dungeons of Dredmor or Tales of Majeyal were much more difficult for me to stick with long-term because I went through the same shit with the same builds over and over and over again without much benefit.

Dude risk of rain has a bomb ass story, told enough to be coherent while just held back enough to keep you guessing, plus it explains why you keep respawning, plus it tells you what's up with the final bosses of BOTH games, plus it explains the lore of EVERY ITEM which is almost at 200, plus it explains ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE STORY.
Tell me what other game has achievements being explained in the story outside of an achievements name.
Plus imo the risk of rain series is the best example of a roguelite that might as well be a roguelike. The items, characters and skills, and artifacts you unlock are made to enhance the game and all, outside of the character and artifacts you pick, are just as integrated into the randomness as the base items. Sure there are artifacts like command that make life easier, but then there's also dissonance and honor that really test your patience and skill level.
