And the jarring jumps of genre at the start of the video is why permadeath platformers and roguelike are absolutely different things. Call them rogue*lites*
@@Myntical That's not a bad point. Most of which is called roguelite nowadays is just arcade games with metaprogression. Which is completely different from the original rogue. Perhaps Arcade game should be the term?
'Roguelike' in the title should have been 'Roguelite,' they're extremely different genres, and only 3 roguelikes actually appeared in this video (Rogue, Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon, Crypt of the Necrodancer). this is especially considering roguelikes are inherently a genre where avoiding hits is practically impossible, with the combat being turn-based instead of real-time. for future reference, a roguelike is a game that, as the name implies, is LIKE the game ROGUE. while rogueLITES only harbor a couple minor features from the genre (random generation, permadeath), rogueLIKES are games that are extremely similar to the game Rogue. to elaborate, this includes essential features such as: having turn-based combat, being locked to a tile-based grid, and being non-modal (as in, any action can be taken at any time). i would highly recommend playing roguelikes, as they are a very unique genre with gaming experiences you won't find anywhere else, especially in the modern day. such as: NetHack (Brutal, unforgiving, the gold standard for the Roguelike genre) Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, colloquially known as dcss (Another amazing standard-setting entry in the genre, simple to get into yet still as heinously difficult to conquer as ever) Tales of Maj'Eyal, otherwise known as TOME Ancient Domains of Mystery, also known as ADOM DoomRL (Very simple to get into yet still remaining traditional, would highly recommend this as a starting point for people new to the genre) Caves of Qud, or CoQ (My favorite roguelike of all time, extremely fun and full of depth -- with a wonderful tileset that is simultaneously terminal-based while also being highly legible and non-offensive to the eyes, would also highly recommend this one) Jupiter Hell (A modern take on the genre by the developer of DoomRL, the most abstracted roguelike I've ever seen, its smooth 3D graphics will make you forget you're even playing a traditional roguelike) i'm probably forgetting something important here, but whatever
Yes, but as a society, most people don’t know what a roguelite is and most people think all roguelites are roguelikes so for SEO in my titles, roguelike is better for views. I actually put a poll on Twitter yesterday for if people know the difference between roguelikes and roguelites and around 55% have no clue. So as a creator, to optimize my SEO, I have to use roguelike. Sorry if that’s frustrating to you.
@@OlexaYTtechnically all Roguelites are Roguelikes soooo you're not exactly wrong to call them such. All Roguelike means is a game vaguely similar to rogue.

And the jarring jumps of genre at the start of the video is why permadeath platformers and roguelike are absolutely different things. Call them rogue*lites*
Quite literally exactly what I said at the start of the video 🥴
Rogue “like” and “lite” are too similar sounding that the distinction in difference is pointless if nobody casually understands which ones which tho?
@@Myntical That's not a bad point. Most of which is called roguelite nowadays is just arcade games with metaprogression. Which is completely different from the original rogue. Perhaps Arcade game should be the term?
The temptation to try Revita after watching this video-
that risk of rain gameplay looked like you never played it
'Roguelike' in the title should have been 'Roguelite,' they're extremely different genres, and only 3 roguelikes actually appeared in this video (Rogue, Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon, Crypt of the Necrodancer).
this is especially considering roguelikes are inherently a genre where avoiding hits is practically impossible, with the combat being turn-based instead of real-time.
for future reference, a roguelike is a game that, as the name implies, is LIKE the game ROGUE. while rogueLITES only harbor a couple minor features from the genre (random generation, permadeath), rogueLIKES are games that are extremely similar to the game Rogue. to elaborate, this includes essential features such as: having turn-based combat, being locked to a tile-based grid, and being non-modal (as in, any action can be taken at any time).
i would highly recommend playing roguelikes, as they are a very unique genre with gaming experiences you won't find anywhere else, especially in the modern day.
such as:
NetHack (Brutal, unforgiving, the gold standard for the Roguelike genre)
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, colloquially known as dcss (Another amazing standard-setting entry in the genre, simple to get into yet still as heinously difficult to conquer as ever)
Tales of Maj'Eyal, otherwise known as TOME
Ancient Domains of Mystery, also known as ADOM
DoomRL (Very simple to get into yet still remaining traditional, would highly recommend this as a starting point for people new to the genre)
Caves of Qud, or CoQ (My favorite roguelike of all time, extremely fun and full of depth -- with a wonderful tileset that is simultaneously terminal-based while also being highly legible and non-offensive to the eyes, would also highly recommend this one)
Jupiter Hell (A modern take on the genre by the developer of DoomRL, the most abstracted roguelike I've ever seen, its smooth 3D graphics will make you forget you're even playing a traditional roguelike)
i'm probably forgetting something important here, but whatever
Yes, but as a society, most people don’t know what a roguelite is and most people think all roguelites are roguelikes so for SEO in my titles, roguelike is better for views. I actually put a poll on Twitter yesterday for if people know the difference between roguelikes and roguelites and around 55% have no clue. So as a creator, to optimize my SEO, I have to use roguelike. Sorry if that’s frustrating to you.
Cataclysm all the way
@@OlexaYTtechnically all Roguelites are Roguelikes soooo you're not exactly wrong to call them such. All Roguelike means is a game vaguely similar to rogue.
This video illustrated very well for me that, indeed, I cannot play rogue-likes/lites much to save my life haha But I do enjoy watching other people play a game I would otherwise have no possibility of seeing on my own!
I wish brutal orchestra was here... oh well. Great video
Great game but not revolutionary in the genre
True
Hey, man, I'm new to the channel. Just subbed. Have you ever played or heard of dungeons of dredmor? I'd love to watch a series on it. It's old, possible right before or after isaac. Hilarious dungeon crawler.
Haven’t! I’ll have to check it out
Great concept, but I'm a bit disappointed that you skipped through 25 years of roguelikes. The genre wasn't the most prolific before the 2000s, but there is some games worth talking about. Fatal Labyrinth, Taloon's Great Adventure, Azure Dreams, UnReal World...
Unfortunately it’s just not my area of expertise so I stuck with what I know
Roguelike: You lose; you have to start from scratch.
Roguelite: You lose; you go back to a hub where you can make your character(s) stronger.
I disagree:
Roguelite:Arcade style game of any genre, ie. Atic Atac
Roguelike:Turnbased game where the _gameplay_ is similar to the game Rogue.
Brilliant idea! I'm a little disappointed you just skipped 25 years of game making history though xD
I have no Orb Slots and I must scream
What is the game shown at 35 seconds in with a forest on top?
Peglin.
