Fabulous coverage! I had a feeling you'd make it here some point. I am a big fan of the sliding gates personally, as they're very memorable, even if they're not the most reliable!
back when these were swing gates, other areas used to have them, Redcar got upgraded to these (i think) hydraulic gates, all the rest were upgraded to boring generic gates.
Yes, this is the only crossing with these telescopic gates as they call them. It appeared that every other crossing had room for barriers, except this one lol.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel tbf the signalbox is literally right where the best place for the other barrier could be, plus i dont think two-barriers would cut it (full width of road), or be very reliable.
The station has been effectively closed since 2019 when trains stopped calling there, so I never stopped to take a look unfortunately. Apparently it's getting a makeover as some development is happening on the old Teeside Steelworks.
Wonder why they chose those barriers. Maybe the barrier arm would hit that little white part sticking out just above the right wigwag if only 2 barriers for 2 lanes or if there were four barriers then it would hit that part too
The signal box is in the way on the right so you couldn't possibly fit a barrier there. It also wouldn't be possible to to install one barrier that covered the whole length of the road due to it's location on the Yorkshire coast. A barrier that long would be dangerous in high winds
@@AutoUnder Well i dint actually think about the winds and the long barrier, that’s a great point there. They could have just had gates that covered the railway and moved like a door towards the traffic but if it failed the gates in the video would be best. I wonder if there any others like this too.
@@Southeast-planes-trains it used to have gates exactly like that that swung out and were driven by a motorised tyre. They were also not very resistant to the wind, which is why the sliding gate was installed
That doesn't look terribly safe! The gates are so slow in operation that pedestrians spill right across the road to get round them, right in the way of cars! Do we know what went wrong recently when the whole system failed to operate and one motorists got taken out by a train? (fortunately the train was going slowly and there were only minor injuries).
It does seem a little unsafe in its operations, but I think most vehicles wait until the gates are fully open before proceeding. I did read about that incident recently. Will wait for the full RAIB report before making any assumptions.
Them pedestrians must have a death wish, whether you’re a pedestrian or a car, you’re supposed to wait until the barriers fully open and the lights/alarms fully stop before continuing.

Pity this is the only one with them, but still very unique nonetheless :)
This is very unique, 2:15 is where you see the body
I went there yesterday, was so much fun!
Ah nice, it's a very unique crossing.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Ikr, I used to live near em, also.. I went again yesterday Xd (They broke when I went yesterday)
Ah, the 'good', 'old' and 'totally doesn't get forgotten to close' Redcar Central Level Crossing! Very memorable!
Will be interesting to hear about that RAIB report for that incident when it gets released.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel only time will tell!

Excellent video and crossing 👍
Very unique level crossing
Definitely.
Still love these sliding gates, really unique!
It's verystrange but cool !
Is the steelworks station still open? Check out that gorgeous signalbox

@@AutoUnder that makes sense, especially when it’s next to the coast
This crossing is unique. How do the gates work?
They slide out from each other in two sections and it glides along.

@Leeswinburn
Nice vid at Redcar central level crossing in North Yorkshire though.
Excellent Video! I thought you come here too! 👍🏻👍🏻 Really like these sliding gates!

I think the vehicles just wait for the gates to be fully open before they continue driving anyway.
IV been there
