42:05 It bears mentioning that, while bleeding out, missing about 20% of his body, and actively slipping into the Warp himself, the Emperor ripped all 4 Chaos Gods from Horus's soul, washed him clean of sin, forgave him, and then wiped him from all of creation (both materium and imaterium) in the span of a few heartbeats.

@@kiwi_lord3424 Yeah. And this was _before_ became a God. This was the Emperor of Mankind at his strongest. A force of physical and psychic might that could only be defeated by his own blind arrogance and hesitation.
Horus was able to strike down the Emperor only because the Emperor thought him and unruly child that must bend the knee. Horus wasn't a threat to him, in any way. And it's that sheer arrogant hubris that Horus exploited to strike his father down.
My Horus Heresy knowledge is a little rusty, so this next part may be incorrect.
Once the Emperor had stripped the 4 main Chaos Gods from Horus, and cleansed his son of sin, Horus apologized. Horus apologized to his father, and meant it.
However, in his son, the Emperor saw that he was still susceptible to Chaos's influence, and he could not be allowed to live. But, if the Emperor only killed him, then the Gods could use Horus in the Warp, and this was _unacceptable._
So the Emperor drew on his massive psychic might and burned Horus from creation. His armor, weapons, body, every atom, every quark, gone, in an instant.
At the same time, using his own soul slipping into the Warp as a bridge, he did the same thing to Horus's soul. There was absolutely no material, or immaterial, evidence that the being known as Horus, Battlemaster of the Imperium of Man, ever existed beyond the chaos of the bloody civil war he hand commanded. The only thing left of Horus is the memory of him, hated and feared, by his Loyalist brothers, hated and respected by his Traitor brothers... loved, reviled, treasured and pitied by his Father...
But, the Emperor wasn't the only one to show massive power during this. I can tell you about the Black Rage of the Blood Ravens that was going on at the same time, if you like.

@@shocksword6847 Yeah... But even then, if it hadn't been for Sanguinius's death, Holy Terra would have still fallen.
The Great Angel's death was felt across his Legion, and almost in a single voice, all the Blood Angels cried out in rage and grief, and gave into what would later be called the "Black Rage".
In this state of berserker fury, no one could touch the Blood Angels. Before Sanguinius's death, each Marine was still a fucking Space Marine. Taking out a dozen or so demons and traitors for each loyalist killed. After the Rage gripped the Blood Angels, though... It was as if they were gripped by Khorne's rage itself.
The Blood Angels _refused_ to fall, fighting on while other Astartes collapsed from similar wounds, literally too angry to accept death. For each Rage-gripped Blood Angel that fell, _hundreds_ of demons, cultists, and traitor Marines fell first.
The traitors had killed their gene-sire, their beloved father, the Great Angel, and they would pay _dearly_ for that transgression.
Where a normal Space Marine would take out a score of demons before falling, a Blood Angel would take out hundreds, fighting in an Ork-like rage, refusing to die until they were cut to literal pieces. The Black Rage of the Blood Angels is what held the line and pushed back the traitors on, and above, Terra. Without that, Terra would have fallen.

not wrong, by comparison the orks are vermin to the might that was the Krorks. just one krork to lead the orks would easily be like horus being resurrected to unite all chaos factions. nothing might survive the coming swarm of the tyranids, but even the swarm would lose to truly united orks and the technological and psionic might a lone krork could provide.

I love the theory that Ork psychic power is so strong that one of them heard from a dying space marine that their emperor was an immortal god who would avenge him, and not only did the ork believe him, he spread the word of the story so that its common knowledge among orks, and since they believe a thing in enough numbers it becomes reality, The Emperor of Man is only still alive because a bunch of orks think its true and that a god king would be really fun to fight.

So a possible theory is that the emperor is using the psykers sacrificed everyday to grow stronger until his body finally dies. At that point in time he'll probably be on the same level of strength as the chaos gods, or strong enough to keep them at bay to the level of blocking their access to the material world. It might also equate to him being able to provide permanent safe travel through the warp for humans again. And that is why he is fit to rule and every word of his should be followed without question. Just picture it, if every primarch remained loyal despite all the failings of the Emperor. If they truly knew what they were fighting for was something worth giving up everything else. Despite the killing, barbarism, killing other species etc, it was a genuine hope for humanity to be achieved at ALL costs. Any other way, would probable either see humanity destroyed and/or subjugated into serfhood by other races or toys for chaos gods. The heresy can be pinned down to one thing: the traitors put their emotions before the vision that the Emperor introduced to them. In fact, Dorn, Guilliman, Vulcan, the Khan, all loyalists had their qualms against the Emperor but they stood with him. Even today, when leaders rule with emotions, we are truly finished. And so grim dark it is.

    Details:
    1. If you want mention the Custodes, you need to mention the Sisters of Silence.
    2. I would have mentioned that the rise of the Psychers was connected to the warp storms created to the slow burn creation of Slaneesh.
    3. It is important to mention that the AI rebellion was put down by a Human/Xenos alliance, but the exhausted victors were incredibly weakened and brittle when the warp storms started. However, the Xenos in the galaxy never forgot which idiots gave rise to the killer AI and often prayed on isolated humans during the Age of Strife. This is a big element in the Imperium's bigotry and xenophobia.
    4. The Emperor pushed Atheism not just b/c of the evils he had seen due to religion, but b/c he wanted humanity to see the beings in the warp as "Warp Aliens", not supernatural beings to be worshiped.
    5. I do think the Age of Apostasy needs to be mentioned. Anyone new to the setting that watches the 9th edition trailer and wants to know who the heavily armed ladies are needs to know their backstory as SoB become a key elite military force of the Imperium in the current setting.
    6. May have been good to mention the Webway way earlier, as it really is the trump card of the Eldar, and what they leverage to systematically kill the Krok leaders to degenerate them into the Orks after the War in Heaven.

To any one who has never played 40K, go to your local comic book store or tabletop RPG store and ask when they host games for new players. You won’t regret it. It is very easy to get into and they will teach you the mechanics as you go. For those who have no experience w/ actual role play you can play 40K like chess w/o having to put any role play into it and have an amazing time. For those more familiar w/40K lore is also a blast to play with because they will add some in the moment role play that is unexpected but takes that moment to the next level of fun. Sometimes games like D&D takes too long to prep, to long to get players (especially new players) on track w/ the plot etc… Not in 40K. It’s non-stop action. You are in the shit from the start of the game until the end. You will laugh, you will cheer, you will hold your breath, you may bitch, you will win, you will lose but you will never be bored!

Might I add my own theory? The reason demons don't tend to appear in the solar system often despite how bad things are on Mars is because the Astronomico os a "Eye of Terror" made by the Emperor and it both keeps demonstrar away and eats the souls of all human in the galaxy with it being more capable of consuming souls near Earth and maybe the Catan shard on Mars is also eating the souls over there. Remember, the C'tan originally fed on stars but switched over to souls once they realized how tastier they were.

I picked up Chaos when i was a kid because my cousin had Guard and I liked the Black Legion paint scheme, so my first real access to 40k Lore (other than the Guard focused Black Library books) came with the 3rd edition Chaos Space marines Codex. The first character i got and painted was Abbadon and between that and the codex lore entries about him and the Black Legion I was hooked. I will never forget the feeling of awe i had reading the First Horus Heresy book, when I actually READ Horus speaking of his "Father" and "brothers" to his Sons, or when he spoke to Sanguinius, Or when they ran into their first daemon and had no earthly idea what it was.
I will say that now I've finished the Horus Heresy books and have a better understanding of the different Primarchs, I'm more of a Space Marine fan than I ever was, they made the White Scars and Space Wolves waaay cooler, and even made the Ultramarines into something that was so much more than the Codex posterboys they had been up to that point.

Just recently I have stumbled on your channel, and been taking a deep dive into 40k (really after stumbling upon regular Warhammer). how did I only find this now? All this is to say great job, your presentation excitement and delivery has kept me from searching out other 40k content creators at all. The lore is just great, I have been able to make some parallels to marvel comics (Marvel being my specialty) such as the entire aesthetic look and feel just remind me alot of Marvel UK, which was around in the 90's. Characters like die-cut=space marines, Death metal=Necrom, Death's head=tons of aspects of 40k, Dark angel etc, also they were constantly dealing with Techno demons of immense power. Also the tau empire in concept and look remind me of Betta ray-Bills race and creed a lot actually. Just find it interesting the parallels and I wonder if originally there was some inspiration from these materials. All and all I am going HAM on the lore and want to get into the books as well even though I have never played table top or video games I am still totally hooked now. Thanks my friend and keep journeying through the Grim Dark!

The one thing I think you maybe could have touched on was the creation of 20 Primark's and their legions, but that 2 have been completely erased from the history of the Astartes & the galaxy at large for some reason be it fair (genetic defect or trait) or foul (some insult or aggression against the emperor or otherwise). I also realize that absolutely ALL details about it have been purged from the records for those reasons....either way, great video, wonderful and concise explanation of exactly "The Big Picture" and the essentials needed to understand this massively YUGE chunk of lore and information.

    • @clanpsi

It wasn't a genetic defect or aggression against the Emperor. Both of those things have been done by other legions who haven't been erased, and both Primarchs were remembered fondly by all of the others who talked about them. This is an amazing amount of lore stuffed into a little under an hour. Super concise and well done!
One correction, though - this one is probably small, but (I think) very important. The Burning of Prospero took place *before* the events of Istvaan III and V. The Burning of Prospero took place in 004.M31 (the year 30,004) while Istvaan III took place in 005.M31 (the year 30,005). I think this is important for three reasons; firstly, Horus was not yet known as a traitor when he manipulated Russ. Secondly - and most importantly, in my view - this means that the first shots of the Horus Heresy were fired by a *loyalist Legion.*
That's right, the Space Wolves were, perhaps ironically, the first Legion to turn on their brothers - and at the behest of Horus, no less.
Lastly, this means that if the Emperor actually listened to Magnus' warning before punishing him for his mistake - or if Russ had actually brought Magnus back to Terra instead of driving him into the waiting arms of Tzeentch - the events on Istvaan could have been prevented.

The imperium of mankind is an obvious nod to the Roman empire and its legion ultimately infighting a reference to the crisis of the third century.
The Necrons are probably inspired by the ancient Egyptians, while the elflike creatures (forgot the name) are probably a reference to the Greeks who by the Romans had a reputation for being the forefathers of the Mediterranean culture but ultimately succumbing to lazyness and depravity.

Just finished the video. So what I got out of this video is: religion is bad if used as a machine or worship by evil people, and some humans, if give an ounce of power will take it and be corrupted by outside forces that will use them for their own gain.

No problem! If you check out my channel I do my best to fill in the blank spots as concisely as possible. But Warhammer has been around since the '80s and there are 600 novels. So there's lots to cover! This video's. Purpose was to talk about the major time periods So anyone who watched it could pick up a random book and not be completely lost 😅

In fact, there was a whole section I pulled from this video right after the Horus heresy called the age of apostasy. I spun that off into its entire own video. So if you watch my recent adepta soritas deep dive. It's like the sequel to this, it is the to year 36k

I think the Damocles Crusade, Tyrannic Wars, and the Awakening of the necrons are worth at least a glancing mention, since they are significant events for their respective factions.
I.E. Tyranids only get a glancing mention in this video despite being arguably the greatest threat to the galaxy as a whole.

This was very helpful for me. I think doing an overview of where we stand right now would be a cool way to finish. Like what is the greater scope of things for all races, not just Gulliman and his crusade.
-Eldari are scattered and on the verge of extinction. Various factions trying to bring back the powers of their gods in fold in order to save Eldari from Slaanesh.
-Orks are everywhere, and they fight anything they can find, their crusades being called 'WAAAAGH' often resulting in destruction of entire systems.
-Necrons have been reawakened and their superior technology and cheat codes are major problem for everyone in galaxy and most of them are hell bent on re-conquering the galaxy.
-Dark Eldar are just annoying sadist pricks. Not much is going on with them. Inferior to every other race in terms of power. Ultimately they are just an Eldari faction.
-Tau are a young race who are living their golden age like humans did during their age of progress and dark age of technology. Only difference is that they had to face the horrors of galaxy way earlier than humans,so this development will undoubtedly push them into a different fate than what happened to humans in dark age of tech.
-Tyrannids are the ultimate new threat to the galaxy. They devour all of the natural resources and biomass of planets to fuel their endless numbers. Being controlled by a single hivemind and very resistant to warp effects. They are a major, existencial threat to even the necron and chaos.

As much as I would like to read some of the lore from this time myself... I hope they don't.
One of the reasons 40k feels so vibrant is the amount of in-setting 'mythology' that exists. There are whole swaths that we, the observer, only get to experience through unreliable narrators who don't know fact from fiction. This allows us observers to 'fill in the blanks' as we see fit... and that, that alone can make the difference between passing interest and a deep seated fascination with the setting.

Did you read the gods of mars series? There is a lot about the dark age of tech in those books.
Event horizons shot at light speed and the disassembly of entire star systems with displays of cosmic vandalism!
As for the war in heaven I can't think of anything that's out there involving that.

First amazing job! The fact that you were able to summarize the 40k timeline in under a hour when I can barely keep a conversation about one of the legions under an hour is fantastic! Now question with there being over 400 books would you be willing to create a series of shorts dividing some of these books and briefly explaining what they cover so people who are interested in learning more about specific events are more aware of them? I had to stop reading quite a while ago just because of time constraints and now I have no idea where to start to get caught up to the current events

Loved this explanation. I got into WH40k through the Dawn of War series of games and was absolutely hooked on the lore - that was back in 2004. 20 years later and I’ve wrapped up reading the Horus Heresy series and man what a ride. The ending was quite different to the lore I’d been reading up until the last book but I won’t spoil it for anyone.
Keep up the good work Wes. May the emperor protect! ✊🏾
