I think you forgot the most important part about the primarch fight and that is how leman got the upper hand. Both primarchs were giving all they had and fought without holding back. But Russ who is known to be an great fighter was actually about to loose. Magnus destroyed one of lemans hearts and even had the upper hand eventhough he had multiple disatvantages. Until a black lightning just appeared out of nowhere blinding both for a short moment. In this moment Leman let go of his sword, which while flying through the air hit magnus only weakspot. His eye. As magnus was blinded Leman saw his oppurtunity and grabbed magnus. Magnus and the Thousand sons have been manipulated by tzeentch since the very first day. And during this fight it was tzeentch who interfiered to make sure that magnus had no other choice but to fall to chaos. But besides that one thing, I think its a great video. Happy to see my favourite faction getting a big video🎆
Woah. Pretty big thing he left out. Unless it’s not exactly proven or known in the Lore. (I’m very green, less than a year). Is this widely known?! That’s wild.
@@_SeeYouSpaceCowboy yeah its kinda important but ut often gets left out. When it comes to primarch fight, you really need to read them yourself, because otherwise you will only hear about the end result and not more. Another fight where this happens is when lion and leman fought. They argued during a crusade which ended in a brawl. After leman realised how ridiculios the situation is he started laughing and got knocked out by lion. Thats why everyone says there is no winner and that we cant tell which primarch of those two is stronger. But no one ever mentions what happened before the fist fight. The fight actually started with them using their swords. They fought seriously with their weapons until lion disarmed him and could have literally killed leman(it was even stated in the book). He obviously didnt kill leman and then turned around because the fight was for him over. It shows that lion is supiriour to leman. You should never get your lore just from memes or just from short texts. If something sounds interesting to you than google it, someone most likely has the passage from the book uplpaded somewhere or retold it. Most likely you will find it on reddit
@@hey_itsme_sam2395 I’m p sure Wes has read the books but probably just left it out and your last advice is still not good advice or foolproof. @@hey_itsme_sam2395 agreed. I constantly see people getting things wrong because they trusted a video or a meme instead of the source material. That is one BIG thing i've learned since reading the books. That said i think Wes does pretty darn good and can't fit everything in his videos. Also the lore is so large at this point it gets really hard to know and remember EVERYTHING. expecially with gw doing casual lore changes every once in a while.
@@Lazrael32 yeah I think does a pretty great job. Its impossible to cover everything. Besides I think thats the best video I have ever seen someone covering the thousand sons lore. Expecially the tutelary part. Most other ytbers just leave it out or call them just deamons without explaining more. I like how wes pointed out that they werent actually evil, but just fueled by their masters emotions
1:04:44 okay, I LOVE this as an Egyptian mythology fan, Magnus is basically the god Osiris!!! Who’s body was cut into pieces and scattered across Egypt by his brother Seth!! I love the hints of actual mythology in the lore of this awesome faction!!
I still think it's interesting quite how much the story of the Thousand Sons embodies the quote: "Like father, like son". Magnus shared the same dream as the Emperor, a utopia of ascended humanity; he shared the same flaws, hiding things from his sons and the arrogance to believe that he knew what he was doing; but the fascinating part for me is that the story of Magnus and Ahriman is a mirror of the story of the Emperor and Magnus. Magnus destroyed the utopia he and his father dreamed of after being manipulated while trying to help, in much the same way as that Ahriman destroyed the legion after being manipulated while trying to help. Magnus destroyed the golden throne, doomed terra and ruptured the webway, Ahriman turned his legion to dust and trapped their souls in their armour. Magnus and the Emperor also responded in a similar manner, with outrage and punishment. It's quite poetic.
The man who’s own children eventually succumbed to a curse that causes them to murder their own brothers until finally put down being disgusted and frightened of the Flesh Change to the point where he got psykers as a whole removed from the war effort is low key infuriating and I’m sure Magnus had the darkest laugh possible when he eventually learned of the Wulfen.
That man, that "man god", is chaos itself. Just look at how humanity lives ... not even LIVES, but merely exists, exists to serve, enslaved, and left to be rotten from the core out. That is not the work of a benign god, but pure Chaos.
You being choked up about your script because it reminds you of something you love about 40K is exactly what makes you the best narrator, your passion is infectious. And im here for it Wes!!!!!!
The emperor really yelled "what makes you different" to the psycher Primarch of the thousand suns. Dude is probably the ONLY one you should warn about the psychic house of cards being built around your kingdom. Feels like either an oversight on the Emperor's part, or looking at this with how much sht hit the fan he was setup by our Carrion King
Not only that, but he seems to have forgotten that, like, half of his sons turned on him. I bet that if he had been up front with them, it would have been a lot harder for the Horus Heresy to even occur.
As an Egyptian, I think that the thousand sons represent Egyptian culture in fantasy better than the that Netflix documentary presenting actual history. Btw, great video as always wes looking forward for more
Magnus is unfortunately a Ginger therefore has (according to Southpark and real life observations)no soul. His last sneaky scary vanish from Prosperous is what game him a soul to become a demon. (I have no proof but Cartman says Gingers have no soul, and I tell my best friend i am happy that his children are healthy but, it’s a shame about heaven and that; But AS HE IS A SECRET GINGER AND I DIDN’T FIND OUT DURING SCHOOL, I FOUND OUT WHEN HE WAS 26, THATS 11 YEARS OF MISSED BULLYING. I like that these guys were pretty much grey knight. I could see that if Magnus had become the battery for the golden throne then these guys would have become the guardians of the webway, leading battalions of troops through the corridors of the web and defending said troops against deamonic presents. Probably have ended up bigger then the boys in blue. How the mighty fell. great lore dude keep it up.
What I like about the Thousand Sons is their dedication to their choosen school of magic pre-heresy. Techomancers, pyromancers, over buffed healer, telekinenis,... you name it they have it. Even cooler if you have multiple affinity with two or more paths, you can enter even more research book sections and scholar meetings. So in a way, I see Prospero as a big magic university in the 40k universe.
In the modern setting (40k), Magnus is attempting to turn Prospero/Sortiarius into a safe-haven for Psykers, where they can live without prejudice and can train their powers, so yeah like you said, a "big magic university".
Magnus: tries to warn the emperor of a grave danger, ends up destroying a project he had no idea existed Emperor: This is unacceptable, send Russ to imprison Magnus Russ: actually kills Magnus, destroys his planet and it's culture, slaughters the civilian population just for the fun of it Emperor: Oopsy-woopsy, aww did my little baby boy do a mistakey-wakey? It's okay, we all have our cranky days, cmere Leman let me give you a hug :3
Magnus was not a traitor. The Imperium betrayed Magnus. He disobeyed and damaged the project. He should have been punished severely. He even blinded the Sons from preparing a defense. The Battle for Prospero had a ridiculous Imperium force of Sisters of Silence, the Wolves, the IG, AND THE Custodes... They still kicked ass! OH and they were basically the first piece on the chess board Chaos actively and passively went after as well. They had the Galaxy turn on them at once basically... If Magnus and the Thousand Sons were brought back to Terra to fix the mess they created? The Horus Heresy would have been so much easier to stomp out. A Legion of Librarians alone would have wrecked any chaos force. Oh and I love how basically every Legion and the Imperium basically disregarded Nikea once they were faced with the reality of chaos themselves. The Emperor should have told Magnus why he did what he did and what he was doing too. 1k Sons forever! Well those who aren't full on maniacs souped up on Chaos juice. Fuck those poorly written characters. Real 1k legionaires should not cause pain or suffering just because it is Wednesday and there are still two work days left before the weekend. Ahriman is a good example. Not purely evil for evil sakes.
@jonathanwatson4484 yeah, Russ is an idiot lol 😂 Didn't even question Horus, was just like "kill magnus, the one I have beef with? Bet" I hate Russ so much. Hypocrite, and he gets away with so much bad shit and never gets reprimanded. Fucking. Dumb.
Magnus: was told to stop fucking with the warp, continued to fuck with the warp anyway. Fucked with the warp to warn his father, destroying a project he was told existed, but not what it was exactly. (yes Magnus was told by the Emperor that he was working on something and upon asking for details he was told that his help was not required) Emperor: sends Russ, some Custodes and Sisters of Silence to get Magnus Russ: Gets told by Horus that the Emperor changed his mind (he did not know Horus betrayed the Imperium) Custodes AND Sisters of Silence: Do not tell Russ that what Horus said was BS AND helped destroy Prospero
Magnus reminds me of my mom. Has to call up and check on me even when be distracted by my phone could prove disastrous, such as when I'm driving down an interstate highway at 85 mph. She and Magnus mean well but still end up inadvertently causing harm.
I don't blame magnus for what he did, he had 2 choices, using the boring, lame, "sending just a message with technology" or instead using his cool psyker powers, let's be real we would have all chosen the second option
Knowing that Teechz was personally dedicated to their fall _any_ option that magnus could take would have backfired spectacularly. All he could have done was wrong before he did, the poor bastard.
@@leandrocastello309 nah he had other choices, which what makes it more dramatic, but however let's be real, if we all had cool magic powers we would all try to use it at any given chance
Plus, considering how long technological messages would take, it could very well arrive too late, and if he tried to go in person Tzeentch would guarantee he was too late

can't remember which it is, but it's either the Roboutian or Dornian Heresy that shows what would have happened if the Thousand Sons had stayed loyal. there's also good artwork of loyal Thousand Sons fighting traitor Space Wolves during the Siege of Terra.
"if everything had gone according to plan then the thousand sons..." tzeentch starts howling with uncontrollable laughter: "plan? oh you silly humans. there is no such thing!"

My man trying to challenge Luetin with these deep dives. Seiously this was awesome! As someone who just bought his first Thousand Sons box this was super informative
I honestly like his delivery and feel more than Leutin. Kind of the difference between reading an encyclopedia or s novel. Both are useful and informative, but the novel is more engaging
Awesome video! Though I want to offer my thoughts about Magnus "ruining" his touching moment with Mortarion: I think he was making excuses to Ahriman because he thought he'd object to his primarch being so forgiving and kind to someone who had been so vehemently opposed to them. Considering how Ahriman was already doubting Magnus after his (temporary, but still) abandonment of his legion during the Burning of Prospero, Magnus might've been concerned about Ahriman's loyalty, hence the excuse of just wanting Mortarion to be in peak fighting condition. Or, Magnus is a dick. That could also be the case. But in my opinion, it seemed a bit too genuine to be a ruse.
This is why I love 40k so much. You can do a deep 1 and a half hour lore video on a faction and still not cover everything. It's so deep and I love it so much.
One thing that always blows my mind about Warhammer 40K is that, for how deep & complex the lore gets, it still all happens inside the Milky Way galaxy. Makes me wonder what wonders and terrors (besides the Tyranids) the universe contains
God this was good thousands sons lore.. I wish you could somehow add the ancient awaits story to this.. showing how despite everything’s that transpired. Of all the traitor legions the thousand sons have maintained their humanity. Giving their lives because they knew it’s what Rylanor deserved and fulgrim had become everything they disdained.
@WesHammer It is insane to me that as many times as this story has been told by every WH40K lore channel all of them left out these conversations between Magnus and Mort, Magnus and Vulkan, and Magnus and the Emperor. I couldn't tell you how many videos I have watched about the fall of Magnus and the burning of Prospero and not one of them ever mentioned any of this. Magnus was in the throne room and was even then given a chance to redeem himself.... Wow that is very interesting and changes my thoughts on Magnus a lot. Thank you for actually telling the story in full. Love these deep dives, thanks again Wes!

Hearing the love you have for the Ksons Wes is inspiring. I’ve been working on my world eaters for a while now, but I’m gonna start a thousand sons too. Thanks!
Except he constantly did. Wes left out leman trying to communicate with his brother for days to avoid a fight. And all magnus had to do was listen to the emperor and much of the heresy would never have happened. Magnus' story is one of supreme arrogance. But there is still a lot of tragedy in it too.
@@Lazrael32 you are also lefting out the part he meagerly tried through a source that wasn't even a source to begin with. Then objection of Veldor proceed to bomb the shit out of Prospero. Not to mention his constant hypocracy about psyckic powers. What rune priests communicate with are more deliberate daemons than TS ever did. Leman is a bad example for Magnus's own fuck ups. If he listened to the emperor they wouldn't know about Horus Heresy until its truly too late. Magnus fucked up the Webway project colossally yes but it also alerted the imperium of Heresy. And if Leman actually gave a damn he woild have brought Magnus back to terra so while magnus holding the rift closed emperor and the custodeans go there kill the daemons and seal the rift. Then BOTH Magnus and Big E would be on the field and heresy wouldn't be as davastating as it was. People really forget about these little details. And so what if you are arrogant? I don't play this, but I've been learning so much from your deep dives. I've been curious about the 40k universe, and you do some of the best explanations. Thank you, WesHammer!
This is the best things and most heartbreaking thing I've ever heard and Magnus wouldn't have gone Kaboom if his marbles were intact but nonetheless, the grimdark is AWESOMELY GOOD!!!
Vulkan saying he would not accept the extermination of his legion in order to be forgiven by the Emperor made me imagine a bittersweet scenario where the Thousand Sons watches as Magnus readies to fight against the very thing they swore to protect, and then they would all collectively agree to commit suicide. Telling their primarch that for the preservation and glory of mankind no cost should be too great, and that they are just soldiers, they vastly more disposable than their primarch is, and if their deaths would mean their father would live, they would gladly pay it.
The fluff around the TS is probably my favourite traitor astartes. I love me some Death Guard, because I like their gross sculpts, but the TS are no 1 for lore. That being said, I laughed unreasonably hard at the Magnus Mortarion dialogue during the siege. Like genuine character growth and humanisation followed by cartoonish shenanigans. The way you wrote the script just perfectly shattered all of the build up. To be honest, if I read that in the book, it would be super jarring, but dammit it made me laugh here.
Holly molly Wes!!! This is great! I love the 1000 Sons. Thank you for upping the quantity and quality. I appreciate it and now have 1.5/11 hours less work tonight because I will be watching this. Blessed be the Wes!!! :)
Dude, at this point now (I'm a fairly new subscriber) I've watched every video you've made. They are by far my favorite lore videos of any subject I have seen. Your narrating and use of background music is top-notch, and some of the more tragic stories choke me up every time. Thank you for all your hard work in making these. I can't fricken wait for the next video.
Love the video! I just listened to A Thousand Sons not too long ago and absolutely loved the story. One small criticism for this video, it might just be my device, but there seems to be almost a buzzing over your voice. Just wanted to give a heads up! Keep killin it my guy!
This is hands down my favorite video you have done! I can not wait for part 2! I would have loved to see Magnus become the primarchs of the grey nights. That would have given him a newfound purpose but also washed away his mistakes. I think that would have given him humility and would have made him more powerful than another primarch, but instead, he fell to a shadow of what he was. I believe in his transcendent to deamonhood he became weaker and less of a threat then if he would have stayed in his original form. Great job on this video can't wait to watch more.
God imagine if the Thousand Sons agreed to research or cooperation treaty with the Tau, they both have so much to gain and both would advance tremendously.
Loved the entire video! As a newcomer to the game & lore this really helped me towards choosing Thousand Sons as my first army. Really loved the bit between Magnus and Morty, you can see some of Tzeentch's influence show through in Magnus' actions there. Can't wait for part 2!
I like how Wes is wearing a Black Templars shirt, while talking about Thousand Sons lore. Those two factions are the exact opposite of each other, and my two favorites.
Dude, your channel is really something else. The production value and storytelling are excellent, but what make the difference are the pure drive and commitment you put in your videos, you can really feel how much you love these stories, and how they genuinely matter to you. The community is really lucky to have people as passionate as you are, keep it up!
Fun fact about the Primarch: In Latin *GN* is red as *NG* meaning that the 15th primarchs name is pronounced MANGUS the red. If you think that's nerdy, first admit it's at least a bit funny.
Thousand Sons are siiiiick but I can't stand the headgear. Dudes are out here lookin like they got charcuterie boards glued to their domes. Awesome video, Wes! Thanks for all your hard work!
Just discovered your channel. Really hitting the mark for me. In depth well made videos. Covering a range of subjects some covered before some not. But the main thing for me is that it is both to the point but also enthusiastic. Your not creating quick bids over before they have began. Your not waffling on for hours about random stuff. And your not reading in a monotone off of wiki. Great work. I will happily listen to any of your videos about subjects even if they have been done before as based of your current videos I think you will do it better. Looking forward to it.
The oddest part is that the Thousand Sons in all their theory about the Warp, never considered that every single demon there is a twisted reflection of someone out in the galaxy. Someone's personal demon they birthed unknowingly. This mostly likely isn't the case but if I'm faced with a mirror reality of everything in my galaxy, it stands to reason that the people of the Milky Way would be reflected as well.
Not to dismiss Magnus' wrongdoings, but it was sad to see him fall to ruin and shame as hard as he did, especially to the Space Wolves. I actually think Magnus could've been handled better by the Emperor, but alas his own hubris and ignorance caught on with him and then he so fell into disgrace. The time where he fucked up the Webway to warn the Emperor is also a prime example of good intentions leading to grave consequences. A true pity.
When I saw you had a Patreon I wanted to Donate to request this very video. I love that you put so Much energy into such an amazing video that though honest in your bias was honestly fair in the judgements and assements of their history and actions. I will have to say this for the time being is my absolute favourite episode you've produced to date. Also I LOVE the Leagues of Votann Minature I recieved. Tzeentches Kindness upon you.
Hey Wes, thank you so much for making a lore video for the Thousand Sons, I've been waiting 18 years for someone to make a comprehensive video of the Thousand Sons and you did it. Keep being awesome and thank you for sharing your passion with all of us!
It's a shame in the last 10k years the demon primarchs have effectively lost their minds or whatever was left of their humanity. I'd of really liked a redemption arch for Magnus and Mortarion since neither of them ever wanted what had happened to them.
Wes, I've been following you since you got into YT. This is my favorite video you've ever done. I love them all, but as a Thousand Sons fan this one really hit the mark for me. Thanks, man. I really appreciate you.
How long until the comments are flooded with TTS quotes and references? (Eg the Necrons pull a Uno reverse card against Magnus issuing a cease-and-desist)
I feel a lot of the traitor legions have real good stories about why they betrayed the Imperium, but I think they all boil down to Daddy issues. Also, all the primarchs needed girlfriends. Ask Guilliman, he wouldn't be able to handle all that paperwork without that Eldari girlfriend being there for him, and also the whole bringing him back to life thing she did. Now THAT'S a girlfriend.
Can't wait for the follow-up of the modern Thousand Suns! Honestly love the videos and though I don't play the board top, the lore and history of 40k is fascinating to learn
The only thing is I wish GW hadn't used the Egyptian theme twice in 2 major factions. Like, both the Necrons and Thousand Sons have Egyptian themes. It would've been cooler if GW took more inspiration for major factions. Like using the Aztecs or the Commanche, for inspiration would've been perfect because both cultures had warriors dressed in feathers. It would've matched Tzeench's bird theme.
I've only been reading up on the lore for a few years now, but I've read that the Dark Angels originally had a Native American theme, and one of the forgotten legions had an Aztec theme. Can't swear to it though.
@@ghannos9869 Ah, very cool! I mean, I can understand why they might be hesitant to do a Native American theme because of certain sensitivities. But still...

1:04:44 okay, I LOVE this as an Egyptian mythology fan, Magnus is basically the god Osiris!!! Who’s body was cut into pieces and scattered across Egypt by his brother Seth!! I love the hints of actual mythology in the lore of this awesome faction!!
No wonder Leman Russ hates Horus so much then, since he probably ejaculated into his drink
He’s also a nod to Odin giving up his eye for knowledge
It's not just magnus, each of the primarchs take inspiration from mythical deities, but obviously their own brand for the grim dark lol
Love Magnus. Especially his TTS voice.

Probably similar to his bitter laugh if he ever found out about Lemans dark ritual to visit the warp and ended up sacrificing his Librarians to do so.
I think he laughs every time a Wolf Priest uses Psychic Powers, while insisting 'I'm not a Psyker. its the spirit of Fenris. Totally different"
That man, that "man god", is chaos itself.
Just look at how humanity lives ... not even LIVES, but merely exists, exists to serve, enslaved, and left to be rotten from the core out.

Magnus: tries to warn the emperor of a grave danger, ends up destroying a project he had no idea existed
Emperor: This is unacceptable, send Russ to imprison Magnus
Russ: actually kills Magnus, destroys his planet and it's culture, slaughters the civilian population just for the fun of it
Emperor: Oopsy-woopsy, aww did my little baby boy do a mistakey-wakey? It's okay, we all have our cranky days, cmere Leman let me give you a hug :3
Horus told russ that the emperor changed his mind, yeah the wolf king is an idiot
@jonathanwatson4484 yeah, Russ is an idiot lol 😂
Didn't even question Horus, was just like "kill magnus, the one I have beef with? Bet"
I hate Russ so much.
(yes Magnus was told by the Emperor that he was working on something and upon asking for details he was told that his help was not required)
Emperor: sends Russ, some Custodes and Sisters of Silence to get Magnus
Russ: Gets told by Horus that the Emperor changed his mind (he did not know Horus betrayed the Imperium)
Custodes AND Sisters of Silence: Do not tell Russ that what Horus said was BS AND helped destroy Prospero

Honestly man, thank you for what you do. You are one of the reasons why I give my fiancé a bombardment of lore. Thank you.
My conjecture always was that they were psykers so active, that Tzeench took interest in them putting some curse on them himself.
Thank you weshammer for the amazing videos. I've been wanting to get into the thousand sons for a while, this might be what tips me over the edge!
The number of action is this universe that can be summed up with "because he was a dick" or, in the case of the orks "cuz it wuz funny" are wild
This has got to be the most amazing and dedicated Thousand Sons lore dive I've seen so far!
The story is why Thousand Sons and Death Guard are my favorite legions.
If Emperor had TTS becomes canon, it would be a dream come true.
I would kill for a deep dive on the Chaos Primarchs, how each fell to chaos, and how each bonded to their chaos gods

It's a shame in the last 10k years the demon primarchs have effectively lost their minds or whatever was left of their humanity. I'd of really liked a redemption arch for Magnus and Mortarion since neither of them ever wanted what had happened to them.
