The Death Guard were my first army when I dove into 40K as a universe, before even learning the lore. I started with the Know No Fear box, but didn't want to play Space Marines. The more I learned about the army and Grandfather Nurgle, the more I loved them for such a different outlook than their fellow Chaos chapters. My first audiobook for 40K was The Lords of Silence, and the internal bickering of the legion really brings up such an interesting point about how divided they are on their gifts. Some relish in it, the durability or the love of bringing suffering to others. Some, such as the Tallyman, focus solely into their work to avoid thinking about it too much. Then there are others who still hold SOME semblance of loyalty to who they were prior to their corruption, such as the gene seed vault scene near the end. On the surface, they are easy to wave off as body horror monsters, but the deeper glance you can take into the legion reveals them as such a fleshed out faction that I can't help but love them all the more.

They all want to be able to remove their armour, they all want to be able to move like they used to, they all want to be able to feel, but Nurgle is an inescapable vortex. Once you start your descent into him he's completely inescapable, slow as it may be. Sure, he can suppress your disgust and fear, but he can't get rid of their desire for humanity, which leaves just about every member of the Death Guard more than a little depressed. The newer ones see Nurgle as a means to an end, all be it a terrible experience to get there, but most of the older ones have realized there's no light at the end of the tunnel, so might as well just keep your head down and keep going. Most of them feel less like zealots and more like revolutionaries. Their lives are awful, but the fact that they're living "The truth" makes their current existence ever so slightly better than when they were "blind"
This is how it is for all traitor legions, in the beginning it's wonderful and you love it. You're mentally and physically stronger. However, you realise your actions are not your own your thoughts are not your own, you're nothing but a plaything for the dark gods.
Mortarion and Typhon’s story in how they evolved into Nurgel’s foot soldiers is just dark as hell. You’re right, there are things worse than an honest death; becoming a member of the plague marines.

i love that some of GWs artists actually know what a scythe looks like still not a warscythe, but far better then the ineffective curved blade polearm that is usually pretending to be a scythe
Ever since I started studying historical weapons to draw better fantasy weapons, I can't look at a fantasy scythe anymore. Real war scythes really were that badass, but how their drawn ... it's just... *THE BLADE IS LITERALLY POINTING AWAY FROM THE ENEMY! JUST ROTATE THE DAMN THING 90 DEGREES!*
@@NoahDaArk Like a gave but with a concave curve. You know how blades with a concave curve have more cutting power but are harder to use because they have a more specific striking aria, if not look up "falx sword cutting roman shield" to get a pretty good image in your head. Now imagine that with the reach and leverage of a pole arm. Historically speaking war scythes were said to be able to cut threw a knights greathelm.
I will not lie, I thought your content would be trash, or at the very least sub-par. However, you are easily becoming my favorite Warhammrr 40k RUclipsr out there. Very nice!
Haha thanks. I understand that the tick tock style of storytelling is not for everyone so I try to do a good balance between the two. The short video serve their purpose to introduce new people to Warhammer or for people who already like Warhammer but don't have a lot of time on their hands 😅
Honestly what makes the death guard my favorite faction, and also the one I’d play if I had the money to build an army, it’s the tragedy of their fall. They never wanted to turn, hell they had begun their final trip with every intention of serving the Imperium, but were tricked by Typhus into being corrupted by Nurgle, only succumbing when they finally gave out to the pain of Nurgle’s gifts. The fall of the 14th feels like the most protracted and painful because, well they were trapped in the warp, and they finally cracked. Most chaos legions turned in a moment, or fell to sweet lies and soothing whispers, Nurgle’s chosen fought tooth and nail against it, eventually succumbing to the inevitability that Nurgle brings to his chosen. Also because Nurgle is my favorite of the gods but that’s my own bias.
Common white phosphorus is already horrendous. It's sticky, ignites almost immediately when it contacts oxygen, burns quickly through flesh and bone, and is almost impossible to extinguish. Honestly only discovered you're channel last month, I had heard of Warhammer previously but hadn't engaged with anything involved with the universe. You're channel was such a great introduction to 40K. Thank you for everything you do
One thing I really love is when you talk about different weponds how brutal they are, so when we then play on tabletop you can literally feel that when your ex your tyranids kills a space marine, you can feel the tyranid bullets borrow through the astarters armor and literally eating him up inside.
my god, this is absolutley AMAZING. I've always been a fan of the aesthetic of the followers of papa Nurgle, but I took the Horus Heresy quiz and got Iron Hands. Might want to just switch to Deathguard after watching this, such a great vid man!

I heard the Chaos forms of the Death Guard were originally roughly based off of Rosie O'Donnell a week into refusing to bathe and living outside that entire time in 100⁰ weather with 90% humidity.
What outdated references - your age is showing lol ;) Nowadays you just have to look at a fat acceptance mogul and BAM you have the blueprints for a nurgle army. So many to choose from!
Loved this Lore dive. While the Death Guard aren't my favorite legion I must say I've gained a greater appreciation for them from this video. The shorts are cool but the more lengthy video essays are really where you shine bright in my opinion keep up the good work.
Woooo, a Concise telling of my Second favourite legion, and my Favourite Heretics! I love this and learned a whole bunch from it (Like Morty has hair?!). Can't wait for the Salamander deep dive and I hope you keep doing this because I love how you handle this show.
I shouldn't do this but every other 40k channel on RUclips honestly lacks so much. Weshammer on the other hand makes his channel fun, it's interesting. Its a 40k channel I know I show friends and they won't get bored
while they got a lot of cool new stuff, i kindof miss one piece of lost lore that had such subtle depth it used to be a rule that death guard could use bolters as bolt pistols on the tabletop could use it at range as a full bolter, but it was one handed and counted as a melee weapon as a pistol wich made perfect sense not only did they get a lot of bulk to absorb the recoil, it was always how they fought they always ground down their enemy with slow frontal infantry advances, but it was also always accompanied with either bioweapons or nuclear if a planet wasnt a toxic hellhole before they attacked it would be during and long after and what weapon is made to be as simple and durable as possible, the bolter volkite guns needed constant maintenance, plasma guns could explode during the long battles, lazcannons lenses would get covered in the gunk and eaten away by the acid rain none of these weapons could compete with the pure reliability of the bolter, and just like mortarion appreciated that of his men he also appreciated it of his tools and their slow grinding wars made reliability important over a little extra firepower so the death guard became the bolter specialists of the legions, carrying them one handed, some of them dualwielding them, without losing any accuracy and learning how to use their pitted blades along with the massive club of a full bolter in melee its such a simple little detail but it fits so perfectly with their mindset im sad that in modern lore they lost it for goo cannons while the imperial fists became the bolter specialists, for no real reason since they are defensive and always close to their supply lines so they could use the fancy weapons i miss back when 40k lore considered logistics the entire reason the imperium uses lazguns instead of the fancy plasma of the tau eventho they can make much stronger weapons
This was simply amazing. Truly a great deepdive, I learned more than I expected, which was in itself a gift! Thank you for all the effort you put into this channel, as fan of 40K and Warhammer, I greatly appreciated. You are awesome!
No problem, I've always really enjoyed the humanizing elements of some of the larger than Life characters in 40k. I feel like they get glossed over a lot for the sake of memes. Which on one hand is funny, but those little humanizing moments are what make the characters so compelling in the first place to me
I honestly love these videos. There is so much great nuanced and masterful storytelling about the great tragedy which is Mortarion and the Death Guard. It is a welcomed edition as most see Mortarion as the great hypocrite; the staunch, tyrant-hating, anti-psyker primarch who surrendered himself to the side of demons, tyrants, and sorcerers. I do think most factions in Warhammer have nuances and debates, and it’s always a pleasure to see that brought up. Thanks Weshammer!
gosh I love your videos. even when its stuff I already knew a little about, you dive deep into the lore behind it, and it's never done in a boring way, always great, the shorts, the deep dives, learning so much about factions I never gave the time of day, it helped me find my favorite legion. The thousand sons and my faves characters Arihman and now Mortarion. pls keep it up man, hope we get to play one day, my KSons against the Plague Marines sounds fun lol

If I could join any of the chaos space marine’s legions, it’d definitely be the death guard. I’d get tons of “familial love” and super powered mutations. If/when I actually do start collecting chaos space marines, I’d definitely make a color palette that fits the Death Guard
I always found nurgle to be a paradox, the dudes demons and soldiers do nothing but mutate and yet nurgle represents stagnation? Yet every depiction in the shows and games is having heavily mutated troops. Just seems weird
Technically he represents the cycle of life more, stagnation is just a stage which I guess is another paradox because he makes the ones he gifts live longer. idk man most 40k lore is just don't question it.
Thanks for this comprehensive and entertaining video! Love your narration style and art direction. Fun to see you jumping into green screen compositing - Wes is really IN 40K!
I'd love to see a "love/hate" grudge match of "Magnus & Ahriman" vs "Mortarion & Typhus"... which pair could look past their differences to beat the other team... lol... I love warhammer stuff...!!! Great video Wes...
Just a few days ago i was searching for lore on the death guard, since I found it to be my favorite faction/ legion in the 40K universe. And my god this video did not disappoint! I find this to be your best video yet and hope you will strive to make every video as thorough as this one. Absolutely amazing!
I literally just finished the Dark Imperium trilogy. I did not like how the third one ended. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone but the whole Mathieu subplot came across like a 40K “Left Behind” book to me. Did not care for it at all. The rest of the story was great. I am not a huge Ultramarine fan but I don’t dislike them either. They come out of this series looking pretty good.
your videos are great. if you are interested in requests, id ask for more Chaos. Everyone does loyalist/imperium stuff.. give us more chaos lore :D Maybe do a fabius bile deep dive (?) I just picked up the first nightlords omnibus book and am halfway through and its cool but focuses too much on Talos, imo
This video was probably one of your longest, and most enjoyable. Worth the hour of watch. It will be most thankful if you do a video on some Guard Regiments in the future as well. This comment was brought to you by Phantasm, The Reasonable Templar.
I like your deep dives, and especially your short videos. I know you have done some shorts on some units and members of the Imperial Guard, and I'd be interested to hear more about the different specialized guard regiments like the last chancers or Tallarn desert raiders!
I was on the ropes on getting into Warhammer as a whole, and with these videos you’ve tilted me to the other side. Thankfully I haven’t gotten into the figures, my wallet can’t take much more 😂
That's ok! The novels are affordable and they are awesome! If you prefer audio books, they use some pretty perfect narrators and you can get most of the catalog on audible
A Border Prince here on RUclips also does some 40k audiobooks if you'd like to give it a try for free. He's a hell of a narrator and does good work, check him out
Definitely love seeing new takes on warhammer a few channels I watch and it always helps to hear new lore or perspectives may have been missed. I like nurgle and the death guard. But tzzech is my boy. The thousand suns are cool and powerful.

I just wanted to tell you that you're doing great work keep it up. If it wasn't for you and you narrative style I would never have love the 40k universe as much as I do. I even want to build my own army later on down the line, again, keep it up brother Hammer!
A single lasgun would be fought over by countries and would be considered the ultimate infantry weapon, allowing the user to destroy anything including vehicles. Now, realize that weapon is considered not much better than a flashlight in the lore.
god damn i loved this so much, think i found my fav faction and group in all of 40k Heres hoping we can get more deep dives into the other chaos god legions!
Thanks I really appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed it! But don't worry! In between any other videos I decide to make I plan on doing a video like this for major faction and every Space Marine legion. It will take me a very long time to get through all of those, but once I have I'll probably start focusing on the subfactions of other factions as well
Love the DG stuff, as it's always "they're the most enduring" or based around attrition, but in the lore ol' Papa didn't want them, he wanted the boi Perty, as well as the Warhawk ripping mortarion as he's outlasted him. So there's always that subtle undercurrent of them being the 2nd choice, and means everything has his feeling of them having to prove themselves, kind of like Mortarions origin story on Barbarus.
Even though I'm just now listening to all these I've been learning a lot. I listen to your deep dives while at work and it's fun to learn so much about WH40K lore. Also love to the grandfather. Have a character for Black Crusade that's a warpsmith and aligned with the grandfather.
I started off watching you do shorts for warhammer 40k and no joke your shorts turned into raiding every bit of lore that you had on your channel on 40k! it all started when henry cavill mention a blackstone fortress or maybe something like that and then the algorithm caught your short and sent it to me ive been stuck on 40k ever since then! im happy youre doing more 40k video and having more than just 1 minute to explain the legions! its been awhile and i forgot who put me on when i was going through the shorts again and then now when i saw an hour long video! Thanks WesHammer any hour long video you put out about warhammer is gonna always get a like/view from me! Much love
Certainly the most body horror legion but Night Lords, Emperor's Children and Word Bearers all are more horrifying imo, just for for their methods and how they conduct themselves.

Typhus was by Mortarion's side that long? It seemed like there was a much bigger disconnect between them. I could've sworn he was Terran born.
In the original lore I believed but it was later retcon
i love that some of GWs artists actually know what a scythe looks like
still not a warscythe, but far better then the ineffective curved blade polearm that is usually pretending to be a scythe
@@ianyoder2537 Wait so how does a warscythe actually work?
@@NoahDaArk a proper war scythe actually has the blade pointed up so it looks like a spear with a long curved blade.
@@DarthAxolotl huh, interesting
@weshammer can I add a +1 to OP's sentiments. Your longer videos are superb.
@weshammer It's still working. Your shorts finally got my friends into 40k after years of me trying, so I definitely appreciate it.
Fantastic addition to the 40k lore scene. Thanks for all your hard work boss!
This is also what I think earned them the right to be nurgles chosen, they showed their fortitude unlike any other chaos faction
Hell when some where severed from the warp they were horrified by what they had become
As a Necron lover i can respect this legion eaven if their immortality is different
I wonder if Necrons can counter Nurgle's diseases and shredd them atom by atom using their techo weapon or the other way around
@@minuano2ndtrueancestor865 tecnicly been robots helps against diseases
@@minuano2ndtrueancestor865 iirc they both have had a feud and mortarion sent a palgue to destroy a tomb world
At least Necrons dont have to wash their hands while fighting Death Guard
Common white phosphorus is already horrendous. It's sticky, ignites almost immediately when it contacts oxygen, burns quickly through flesh and bone, and is almost impossible to extinguish. Eaven the vacuum of space are not always enough.
Using it has been a war crime here on regular earth for a long time.
Just imagine what thousands of years of cruelty and war can do to make phosphorus even worse.
Love the show

Honestly only discovered you're channel last month, I had heard of Warhammer previously but hadn't engaged with anything involved with the universe. You're channel was such a great introduction to 40K. Thank you for everything you do
Please do more deep dives into the chaos legions. The way you explain everything makes it so easy to listen to. Would really love to see more!
Are you going to cover all Chaos Astartes Legions like this? It was a great video, and I'd love to see you take a deep dive into the other traitor legions. My favourite are the Night Lords
My plan is to do one of these for ever major faction and every space marine legion 😃
@@weshammer night lords 🙏

This channel has the best beginner friendly 40k lore contents, Death Guards are my favorite faction as well
I really enjoy quality 40K lore content. There aren't that many good narrators with such passion. i mean, you probably get compared to Luetin a lot but honestly there's not a contest there, your styles are so different I don't think there can be a competition. And I love seeing your videos man.
Hey man I absolutely love these long-form lore videos. Extremely informative without dragging or becoming boring please keep them up, really appreciate all your hard work. I'm sure there's countless people that have been introduced The Hobby through your excellent videos.
Me watching this while eating
I love these deep dives! You're doing incredible work :)
Okay understand that sounds
Got the whole army now I’m painting them. Happy to see them getting covered by you
I am so happy someone else finally saw mortarion as a version of Nathan explosion!
Now I want to try and see the other traitors as members of deathklok!
These deep dives are so wonderful. You've quickly turned into one if my favorite 40k youtubers. Keep up the incredible work. Because these videos are so refreshing.
I just started reading about WH40K lore and I ADORE the long videos you do. Please keep it up, I’m so looking forward to more
I must say. I knew nothing about Warhammer 40K before I managed to stumble upon your channel. I think you are doing a great job! Definitely got me hooked! Keep up the good work!
These long-form lore videos are easily my favorite content that you produce, love you're passion and commitment, keep up the great work! :)
Having just started my death guard after finishing necrons, this is the perfect supplement! Thank you!
I heard the Chaos forms of the Death Guard were originally roughly based off of Rosie O'Donnell a week into refusing to bathe and living outside that entire time in 100⁰ weather with 90% humidity.
I heard it was based off of Oprah after her third lunch of the day. She's a sweaty eater.
What outdated references - your age is showing lol ;)
Nowadays you just have to look at a fat acceptance mogul and BAM you have the blueprints for a nurgle army. So many to choose from!
Loved this Lore dive. While the Death Guard aren't my favorite legion I must say I've gained a greater appreciation for them from this video. The shorts are cool but the more lengthy video essays are really where you shine bright in my opinion keep up the good work.
These deep dives are GREAT. In my free time being able to chill and learn about the universe of 40k is something I love doing. 🔥
Dude an hour long great job it was so worth the wait love the content man 🥰
Woooo, a Concise telling of my Second favourite legion, and my Favourite Heretics!
You're getting me hooked on Warhammer 40K lore - and I am all for it
while they got a lot of cool new stuff, i kindof miss one piece of lost lore that had such subtle depth
it used to be a rule that death guard could use bolters as bolt pistols on the tabletop
could use it at range as a full bolter, but it was one handed and counted as a melee weapon as a pistol
wich made perfect sense
not only did they get a lot of bulk to absorb the recoil, it was always how they fought
they always ground down their enemy with slow frontal infantry advances, but it was also always accompanied with either bioweapons or nuclear
if a planet wasnt a toxic hellhole before they attacked it would be during and long after
and what weapon is made to be as simple and durable as possible, the bolter
volkite guns needed constant maintenance, plasma guns could explode during the long battles, lazcannons lenses would get covered in the gunk and eaten away by the acid rain
none of these weapons could compete with the pure reliability of the bolter, and just like mortarion appreciated that of his men he also appreciated it of his tools
and their slow grinding wars made reliability important over a little extra firepower
so the death guard became the bolter specialists of the legions, carrying them one handed, some of them dualwielding them, without losing any accuracy and learning how to use their pitted blades along with the massive club of a full bolter in melee
its such a simple little detail but it fits so perfectly with their mindset
im sad that in modern lore they lost it for goo cannons while the imperial fists became the bolter specialists, for no real reason since they are defensive and always close to their supply lines so they could use the fancy weapons
i miss back when 40k lore considered logistics
the entire reason the imperium uses lazguns instead of the fancy plasma of the tau eventho they can make much stronger weapons
This was simply amazing. Truly a great deepdive, I learned more than I expected, which was in itself a gift!
Thank you for all the effort you put into this channel, as fan of 40K and Warhammer, I greatly appreciated.
You are awesome!
I love these long deep dives, the narration is so good
Thank you for having a bit of sympathy for the Primarch.
Bro I'm so glad I found you on tiktok. I definitely love the long form vids. I've already bi get your content and am looking forward to all the vids to come. I'd love to see a collab with Majorkill, you both do an amazing job explaining the lore with comedic stuff sprinkled in. Thanks for the vids my dude o7
Thanks! I'd love to do collabs with all the other creators, hopefully that will happen one day
@@weshammer Majorkill was the reason I found you a few months ago.
I hope a regular podcast can workout between a group of you big enough that ppl can rotate in and out. It can work well with someone discussing a subject they are most knowledgeable in while others ask questions. Also could be a simple update podcast.
I'll be happy seeing crossovers if that's all that can be managed though.
This was a great video I'm looking forward to many more
Man oh man, I love this channel the information is told in a really cool way without getting boring that some other channels do, btw love when you tell the information so well that you literally feel like you can se a picture in front of you. Keep it up also, if you could do more like the ones with how terrifying weponds are that would be lit. Other channels do that of course like one mind syndicate but they don't tell information and stories like you keep it up man pure talent!!!🔥
The lore never does come out and say whether the fiat of "Nurgle can infect anything" overrides the fiat of "the Tyranids can adapt to anything".
If I could join any of the chaos space marine’s legions, it’d definitely be the death guard. I’d get tons of “familial love” and super powered mutations. If/when I actually do start collecting chaos space marines, I’d definitely make a color palette that fits the
Death Guard
I always found nurgle to be a paradox, the dudes demons and soldiers do nothing but mutate and yet nurgle represents stagnation? Yet every depiction in the shows and games is having heavily mutated troops. Just seems weird
Nurgle is more like giving up on everything
I think of it more like entropy
Technically he represents the cycle of life more, stagnation is just a stage which I guess is another paradox because he makes the ones he gifts live longer.
idk man most 40k lore is just don't question it.
Not erosion born of action, but decay born of stagnation.
Mutation is not Nurgle, but the rainbow of Decay is His Gift.
I love the shorts, and these lore videos are awesome. I look forward to all the future content.
Saw this in recommended, subscribed. "Nurgles special nasty boys" immediately won me over.
I love your long form content, thank yoy for making this.
Makes me wonder if the 'Dutch Oven' is more of a tactical move for them rather than a prank.
your videos are great. if you are interested in requests, id ask for more Chaos. Everyone does loyalist/imperium stuff.. give us more chaos lore :D
Maybe do a fabius bile deep dive (?)
I just picked up the first nightlords omnibus book and am halfway through and its cool but focuses too much on Talos, imo
Real good pacing and well put together, so we'll I didn't even realize how long it was.
He's a hell of a narrator and does good work, check him out
this was really neat.
Can I suggest you do one of these deep dives on the Primarchs?
0:00 this man summarized exactly what I like in the death guard in 10 seconds
Imagine the lady's face when she found out Angron grew to be a slave, mortarion landed on a plague like world.
Im absolutely loving these longer videos 👌🏻👌🏻
Definitely love seeing new takes on warhammer a few channels I watch and it always helps to hear new lore or perspectives may have been missed. I like nurgle and the death guard. But tzzech is my boy. The thousand suns are cool and powerful.
Granted I haven’t watched all of your 40k videos, but this is by far my fav. Thanx for doing this! Please keep up the good work, cause the community are loving these ❤
I've never played warhammer 40k even once, but listening to the lore on this channel is very entertaining!
keep killin it bro! Your videos are lookin fire and the formatting is really popping off. Much love ❤
Thank you so much for putting the level of effort you do into these videos. I absolutely loved this video
You’re simply killin it - loving your content
This was awesome. Great work man! I think you hit both the tragedy and the horror of the Death Guard.
This is great. I’d love a video on each of the Primarchs and their legions. I know it’s a ton of work though, I appreciate your research!
I just wanted to tell you that you're doing great work keep it up. If it wasn't for you and you narrative style I would never have love the 40k universe as much as I do. I even want to build my own army later on down the line, again, keep it up brother Hammer!
Could you make a video on the emperial guardsman?
How strong are they compared to normal irl soilders?
A single lasgun would be fought over by countries and would be considered the ultimate infantry weapon, allowing the user to destroy anything including vehicles.
Now, realize that weapon is considered not much better than a flashlight in the lore.
Seen hundreds of warhammer presenters/loretubers, and I have to hand it to you Wes; Top tier work sir, top work indeed! Cheers!
Beyond amazing work again! Thank you for the great content and amazing explanations of this beautiful 40k universe.
Wow Wes. Fantastic and compelling lore lesson man. I had no idea Mortarion’s origin story was such an epic tragedy! Thanks for this excellent vid
Great video. You should also talk about some of the surviving loyal marines, such as Nathaniel Garo which leads to the grey knights eventually.
When I was younger, my favorites where Slaneesh.. As I became older, the call of the Grandfather beconed and the forces of Nurgle are now my favorites
god damn i loved this so much, think i found my fav faction and group in all of 40k
Heres hoping we can get more deep dives into the other chaos god legions!
20.38 Ah Yes, Change is inevitable. The favourite Quote of grandchangeling Nurgle
This was insanely well done you should consider making this a series with all the primarchs/ legions and their motives/personality’s !
Thanks I really appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed it! But don't worry! In between any other videos I decide to make I plan on doing a video like this for major faction and every Space Marine legion. It will take me a very long time to get through all of those, but once I have I'll probably start focusing on the subfactions of other factions as well
@@weshammer Sounds great looking forward to it !
If you love gardening then Grandfather Nurgle can grant you’re most enjoyable future
You have such a lovely flow when you’re telling a story, you must make an amazing tabletop host or dungeon master for lack of a better term.
I don’t even play warhammer or games like it but I love the lore of it, and this is becoming my favorite channel
