This is by far my favorite series of yours and I feel you should know every warhammer horror story you’ve covered I’ve listened to on audible. There’s something so unsettling about the eyes of the Emperor being gouged out. Defiling a visage of humanities god. It’s like saying he isn’t watching. That his protection holds no sway here.
I like (and am creeped out by) your interpretation!
I thought it hinted at the nature of whatever was causing problems, something, whether the creature _itself_ or someone influenced BY it, doesn't like the emperor, which means something among his enemies, i thought it hinted that it was chaos related.

This gives Event Horizon vibes, can definitely feel the influence. I wish 40k had started making shorts, films, and tv series decades ago as it is so rich in lore and detail. Great job narrating.
DW. The series is going to be absolute garbage (already starting with the rings of power treatment) and thus deny any further adaptions of 40k for the next 10-20 years. Yay :)

If I understood well (which could not be the case because English isn't my native language) the desacrated Emperor image is implied to be the artefact casting a curse on the people who take it, driving them into madness. However, in my headcanon, it's just the Emperor's wrath because he is pissed off than nobody tries to fix his portrait.

I got the same vibes. Maybe it's some necron artifact on the asteroid that causes madness for whatever reason.
nah that astroid just had a hoard of warpstone
@@desperado3236 Might be some mental wave that it uses to deterr folk from being around it for too long, and if they remain too long around it, well, this happens.
Then, (maybe) handful of scarabs go to the station, repair any sign of damage.
Though honestly, it could be purely warp related. Chaos can force their ways into the material plane, but it is extremely taxing and difficult.
Much easier to have someone "invite" them in/accept an invitation. In this case, it probably was the guy taking the picture, i.e. he accepts the "deal" that everything that happens here is outside the gaze of the emperor.
See, as chaotic as the warp is, it is bound by lot of extremely restrictive "rules". Sure, those rules can be broken, but it tends to be very taxing on the warp native (though the amount of difficulty can correlate to how restrictive said rule is)
Since this being that is "enticing" these people is only requiring a minor "agreement" my hypothesis is that someone made a deal/contract with a decently cunning deamon or warp entity to protect that asteroid.
It was probably pretty win-win situation. The deamon keeps an eye on the place and makes sure it doesn't get tampered with too much, and it can eat all the unfortunate souls (that were around for too long) and their emotions as it wanted.
That is my feeling about this at least. My hypothesis? It is probably a warp entity rather than a deamon bound to any of the factions.
Unlike how the tabletop may paint things out, the deamons of the 4 factions merely take up a small piece of the river of souls.
The most probable answer by my estimate? It is a dangerous necron artifact that an eldar of the old times (could be relatively recent, but I really doubt it) put up countermeasures for so no lesser species would mess with it.
So an eldar of the old times likely either created or made a deal with a spirit of sorts to make sure to keep any unwanted folk away. Eldars would immediately notice the signs of their own kin and thus would avoid it, but the lesser species would be properly punished.
How's that sound?
I feel the horror vibes, but... I'm not exactly fan of the "no answers" style of storytelling. I don't need everything explained, but I do need at least something. In this story we read about a guy suffering from halucinations. At the end, the rest of his crew appears to suffer the same fate. But what has really happened? Was this an act of some strange creature? Cult? Just a mere halucination? The only thing we know that there is "something scary" and literally nothing more. I am ok with having questions after a story, but if the main conflict is with something we know literally nothing about... I feel like that is an cop out. Of course people are gonna have questions when you answer nothing. But making people ask questions while feeding them just the right amount of answers? Now that is art.
However, the voice acting in this one was more than good enough to carry the whole story for me.
I suppose it's a matter of personal taste, I really enjoy these kind of stories, the ones with literally nothing to work with, which in turn gives ample room to theorize and analyze each and every hint that were given. Each time I read or listen to one of these stories, especially in the 40K or Warhammer Fantasy setting, I mentally roleplay as an Inquisitor or Witch Hunter and try to explain it via in-universe info, then make overtly conservative conclusions (in this case, just a feral xenos creature gnawing on random bits in the facility, mixed with stress and fatigue from the miners, which caused them to hallucinate and give into madness) while at the same time prescribing overtly radical courses of follow-up action (in this case, termination of the mining crew as they have all been touched by madness, and are more than likely to all be heretics due to the discovery of the defaced picture).
Agreed, keep it vague but if you dont even give me an idea of wtf is going on i just stop giving a shit about the story, like theres 0 pay off to it all and makes the whole thing feel like a massive waste of time
Some cursed relic which kills the crew? How and why will never be known.
I've felt like that with some stories but I didn't really feel that with this one, maybe weshammer's ability to tell stories carried this
@@GayDemonWarlord Warhammer is so vague most of the time. Wes carries all the stories 😂

@@ethanor It is actually a very clever way to get people invested in your story. All the "i would've done this and that instead" conversations are good for building a community and getting the word out of the original story. Fan speculation is great.
It is one of the reasons why Mary Sue is a negative thing when it comes to stories and the characters in them. It leaves no room for people to self-insert.
@@arkosilaura Well, he's not expected to know what to do all the time, but he should not ignore basic reasoning. Why lie to your medic, why make up that you don't hear it anymore? What's the harm in just telling the truth? When a character in a horror is dumb and ignores the obvious choice, it's not endearing, it's frustrating. It doesn't help viewers self-insert, quite the opposite, I'd say
@@AxolotlInMC My assumption as for why he behaved the way he did is because he is a former ganger.
He instinctively tries to avoid saying anything that would show him to be weak in any way.
In a gang in an underhive, such a thing would get him torn apart immediately.
Also:
Remember that the only drive of the people he leads is money. If they think he isn't able to lead them to money anymore, or that they can overpower him and try their own ideas at leading themselves to money, they will get rid of him... and they wont keep a betrayed leader around. He'd be vented.

That’s really how the 40k universe is written
That's the dice roll of Warhammer. Sometimes you are just chilling on your chill lil agriworld, and then sometimes space splits open, its raining blood, and your bones are dry.
Sometimes you're born on an agri-world.
Sometimes you're born on Necromunda.
We do a little bit of shade around here. 😆
Dont worry much about how you come off, you are anonymous afterall
Welcome to Warhammer 40k. Some people have it nice, some people don't. It's a hellish universe
Guess I refreshed at the right time, looking forward to this one.
Refreshing was a blessing
One thing I love about 40k is the horror element. It’s not your average kind of horror. It’s unique, different. Not like creepy, jump scare horror. But like body horror. What lengths humans will go to get that edge in war. The things they do to their bodies. As well as their souls. It’s like humanity tends to reflect its environment. And with all the different races and aliens and the horrors of war all reflect on what these humans become. I haven’t read any books yet, played any 40k games both video and tabletop. I became a warhammer fan through the fantasy setting. Specifically total war. But I always knew about 40k. Probably before I even knew about fantasy Warhammer, because my cousin was always obsessed with Warhammer 40k books. He had every book, and he knew I was into fantasy and sci fi like him and always urged me to get into it. Well lately I have been watching lore videos here and there, and like I said my favorite thing about these videos, is I know I’m going to be horrified by the end of it lol in a completely unique way too, I don’t know how to perfectly describe it
I agree with a lot of what you said. It's the brutality of the universe that draws me to it. It's not horror like we think of typically, but a horror of grotesque and mutilation of the mind, body, and soul. The horrors are eldritch level gods and creatures, and absolutely, the universe reflects that onto itself, always adapting and one upping the last.
So far, I've only played the Vermintides and Darktide, and I am currently trying to figure out where to start reading. It is so expansive that I really don't know where to start.
@@StuckTrippinas someone who has shredded through most 40k books, a couple tips may help.
1: if your interested in being chronological and stay in the time, then start with the first Horus Heresy book, Horus Rising. Its the very beginning of the Heresy during the end of the Great Crusade that made the Imperium. Keep in mind, be ready to commit, the Horus Heresy series is complete now, but it is HUGE and is over 60 books I believe.
If you dont care about that and want some of the best writing to keep you going, the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series are excellent and follow Inquisitors, and has very good and ground level descriptions of how the Imperium is for ordinary people. For some huge action, Spear of the Emperor is a great modern Space Marine book.
This is honestly a fantastic story and it's taught me something. If you want to survive a horror story, you need to have emotional intelligence and be able to be honest with the people around you if I was this guy I would probably have held a meeting and told people that I was compromised in some way and explained what happened and attempted to find some solution that would maintain the safety of myself and the crew
lol this is 40k if you made that announcement chances are you would be deemed a heretic and killed.
Lol no denying that

small correction fluid on and inside of a person that is spontaneously exposed to space will boil not freeze. Temperature is the speed of the particles making something up move (vibrate in solids) in space there are basically no particles, so vacuum doesn't have a temperature, at least in the way we thing about it. People in space have problems with cooling down since all the heat our body produces is trapped inside of the spacesuit, with the only way to get rid of heat energy is radiating and that is quite weak at the temperature of the human body. NASA EVA suits have undergarments with tubes of water running around so that astronauts don't get heat stroke. Also we don't give up much radiation but the sun does. And if you have been up in the mountains on a sunny and calm winter day you know that temperature may be below freezing but in the sun it can be quiet hot I mean strip down to underwear(and get a horrid sun burn) hot. Same thing but even more of that once you don't have a few 100s of miles of atmosphere to stop most of the sun.
The God Emperor of Mankind with his Gene-writers remade mankind in order to conquer the stars. He remade the entire foundation of humanity to be tougher stronger and flexible to the rules and laws of the universe and half his damn sons did the human thing and stabbed him.
It's not just a cooling problem, it's a balancing problem between heating and cooling. All matter radiates heat in the form of infrared light, and in space, that light just goes off into the void. If you're in the shade, you're constantly losing energy through thermal waste and getting basically zero back.
The reason astronauts struggle with overheating is because their suit acts as an insulator; the warm inside reflecting the heat back while the cold outside radiates very little heat. But in direct exposure, space is frigid, it's just very slow to freeze you since there's no atmosphere to sap your heat, just your own ambient loss.
@@themather1 the amount of energy you are losing by radiation is way less than the amounts that your body produces.
Interesting, I did not know these things
if ur going to correct you might as well say space is not populated with orks ,chaos gods and astartes ... oh and I am the emperor

Space Marines can be in horror situations as well like in the the later parts of Astartes animation. Most of the Horus heresy from the primarchs POV was a bit unnerving too. Especially since no one knew what Chaos was back then.

14:57 I felt that.
When I arrive with the second shift crew first shift is happy to see us. We help them get ready to close before they hand it off to us. But third shift... Rolls a little different. They expect us to be done and vacated from their space. Their expectation is we are to only see them coming in as we are heading out. Of course sometimes work carries over so you have to finish. And oh God, third shift will go Maximum Petty to make it so much harder than it has to be.
I thought that was a mic mistake at the end at first 😂
Nice touch.
Ah yes. Another fine example of "life isn't so bad in the Imperium."
No, no it really isn’t. For all its flaws from an idealistic, golden age of technology enlightened perspective, it’s guaranteed food and shelter and protection. Out there in space, anything goes and it’s a real abominable crapshoot on how bad it is. Not whether something bad will happen, that’s already guaranteed, but the severity is the gamble. Right here, this is somewhere in between getting lost in space, and turned into a chaos entity. Not as bad as permanent plague zombification, but worse than weeks of lonely starvation drifting in the void
Yeah life wasn't bad for these guys. their DEATH was bad, but they seemed to live pretty okay lives until that point.

Definitely a warp entity of some kind inhabiting the picture of the emperor. The fact that the eyes are scratched out seems like a calling card or maybe even bait. A way to compel the observer to view and keep it. A very insidious curse-like thing that’s super difficult to combat. That’s intense…
Yeah the story definitely implies it's the picture causing things but I think it's something on the asteroid and the picture is just a symbol of the madness to come.
An unintentional warning left over from a previous miner who created it in his madness before suffering the same fate.
That's how I see it anyway.
@@desperado3236 it could be both for all we know. Maybe it inhabits the asteroid and uses the picture to spread its influence like a rat carrying a plague
I take it more as this. The Emporer is the head of humanity, the savior, and the reason to push on through the grim dark. Your entire life, you believe with all your being that the Emporer is watching over his flock.
However, something truly horrific was happening here. Any who bore witness would surely question their faith, probably feeling alone and abandoned by their god king. Any image of him would soon become a falsehood, a liar, and a thief of belief. Somebody likely gouged the eyes in a last-ditch middle finger to the man that wouldn't save them.
Nurgle is a warp being and can create magical plagues. But green light usually means Necrons.

So picking up the picture is what starts the madness, right? Then does it spread to the other people on the facility after it's caused someone to die by it? Why did everyone else start hearing it at the end?
Heresy guarantees death yk?
Maybe the doc looked at it too and didn't say anything?
it only spreads if other people touch it
The entire previous crew vanished, and it seems unlikely that they all took turns holding the photo. So, I think that once someone starts the haunting(?) everyone gets screwed eventually.
And here I was expecting the twist to be that this is the recurring nightmare of a servitor dreaming itself to life, and constantly trying to kill itself in a semi-delirious panicked mania.
I like the idea that the portrait of the emperor is actually just one of those annoying noise making devices that you put in someone's backpack as a prank

There's a possible event known as "unnatural corpse"
There's the chance to get an event where a corpse turns up at your colony. The corpse is that of one of your colonists, who is still alive. Its a perfect copy of them.
Its warm and clammy to the touch. It causes the still living colonist to eventually go insane over a couple of weeks. In the last few days you have this sense of impending doom and horror, then it awakes. If you incinerate the corpse, throw it out, bury it, butcher it, launch it hundreds of kilometers away into the ocean or even feed it to your animals - it always returns. It teleports next to the victim whenever you aren't looking at it, always watching, driving them insane.
There is a way to stop it from waking up, but its a race against time. Its basically a death clock for the unfortunate victim, before a horrible unstoppable fate in their mirror image inevitably barrels toward them at impossible speed.
I swear half of these start with people mysteriously disappearing

If your sat that there thinking a bit of lost sleep doesn't sound too bad trust me when I say sleep loss can and does ruin you. I've been dealing it with for three and half years and every year its gets harder to deal with.
ANOTHER WARHAMMER HORROR IN THE SAME WEEK?!?! LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve watched and seen a lot of horror stuff, so I’m pretty used to creepy stories by now. But for some reason I got a rare “that really creeps me the fuck out. Big time” reaction about the tapping at the end. And, especially. That emperor forsaken image of that demon lady monster. For some reason that whole thing really got to me in a way horror hasn’t done in quite a while for me. Well done. I don’t know if it was just the visuals alone, or the narration or the sounds or all three. But this one really got me freaked out pretty good towards the end
I absolutely love it when your doing the horror story's. Please keep it up mate.
"in walked Idris Elba" great story mate loved it
Through the whole story, I couldn't help but think of this woodpecker that really liked the wall outside my window. that asshole would tap-tap-tap all the damn time...I was the only one that would hear it, because it only liked my wall for some reason. "I'm not crazy, it's the bird!"
I always look forward to your Grimdark Story Hour videos! This one was absolutely fantastic!
I had to Google the time zones to make sure I was on top of this upload, turns out 10AM for you is 12AM (the next day) for me
DUDE I LITERALLY LIVE FOR THIS SHIT, thanks for the consistent new posts my brother
These are your best videos by far Wes, love your channel and hope you keep finding these horror gems!
Booyah! New grimdark story hour! My painting session gonna be extra good today!
These are the absolute best 40k stories on RUclips. Hands down.
The warhammer universe is so terrifying it’s unbelievable fight in wars with torturous aliens and creatures that want to eat or kill you. Or try to just work a day job which is crap or you have to deal with stuff like this. I would have voidlocked myself the moment I’d saw that things face nevermind the stuff he went through.
Also weshammer thank you for getting me into the horror series I love it your grim dark series is just amazing.
As I sit on the toilet, in burning agony due to my lactose intolerance, this entertains me! Another great summary!
Finally it's story time hour 😊
I usually like your videos, but man coming back to them when im baked or drunk I got new appreciation for your story telling cadence
Was it the picture that activated the anamoly? The medic didnt have the picture on him so why did he also start hearing the tapping... so many questions
Okay so I love all of these dark warhammer story hours, this one too, but I’m ngl I started laughing at 21:13 imagining DJ Khalid saying that for some reason😂 imagine if he was just green screened on there for a sec
RUclips's video player gets worse by the day. I've paused the video but the audio keeps repeating that creepy knocking.
Great man. The best horror stories are the ones where not everything is explained
Love me some Grimdark Story Hour
I love the Horror Hour it’s what I look forward to most. You’re the only one that does it and it’s awesome
I dont know why they dont use these storys to make movies they would be soo good they already have great writing, world building, and story telling. I really like this story too with all the creepy moments with the picture of the gman and the tapping not to mention the returning corpse coming back with the same injures and new ones was chilling.
Love your 👻spooky👻 40k Stories, ist different than the other chanels , Love your stuff in generell, sry for My english im from Germany berlin, jawohl mein Freund , liebe genau solche Sachen, weiter so Kamerad 🫡😁
Perfect timing
imma be honest... at first i thought, "this guy is a lil corney", but then realized how much time and effort you put into making me feel interested in the story compared to other content creators. Nothing against them, but you seem to really care about what you put out and I appreciate that. I have binge watched about 2-3 hours so far and I love it. You have gained a loyal subscriber sir!
I don't get it/ the twist... :/
Help pls :)
What the monster is isn't explained and it's up to you to come to your own conclusion on that. However, the twist is that throughout the story Alune Was the only one that could hear the knocking and the monster was terrorizing only him. After he died, we get a quick peek at two other characters that can suddenly hear it.
What this insinuates is that this is exactly what happened to the previous crew. One by one they were picked off by this creature. In those final moments, we get to see that this process is repeating itself.
@@weshammer alrighty, thanks! :)
@@weshammer it seems odd though that the entity seems obsessed with spacing its victims. since there was no obvious signs of death on the rig more than likely they all did what alune did and wernt killed through "accidents" like hydrogen bubbles. it sounds a lot like vengeful river ghosts from china that wernt given a proper funeral and thus drag others down with them. maybe the original heretic that cut the eyes out made a beacon with the sacrifice to not even a warp entity but some formless void creature thinking they would be rewarded but well just ended up like the rest
