12:37 I actually grew up with the windows version and I don't remember sonic appearing to needing the toilet as he's running. He's got this sorta awkward "leaning to the right" thing going on here that looks like he's limping. XD
Sonic 3D Blast isn't my favorite Sonic game, but I did really it both on the Genesis and the Saturn. I prefer the Genesis version the most, simple because it's got one of my favorite Genesis soundtracks. I really need to sit down and play Jon Burton's director's cut of it sometime. Whether or not someone likes or hates Sonic 3D Blast, the fact that it was a driving force for Jon to post videos about 3D Blast, 68K assembly and Genesis programming tricks, other videos about Traveler's Tales developed games, etc. makes Sonic 3D Blast an invaluable launching point for Jon Burton's video gifts to the community.
I like sonic 3d blast Saturn version so badly I felt bad for not adding them to the glowing sphere bonus stage on the part 2 (work in progress btw) of my sonic 3 reanimated and I'm from Brazil so u might not understand the language on my sonic 3 animated
I had the Saturn version when I was a kid, and I loved it. It was my favorite game on the Saturn aside of Tomb Raider and Daytona. The music in my opinion was the best soundtrack in a sonic game. Especially in Ancient Ruins. The tracks sounded like Enigma and I was loving it! The gameplay was great. The graphics were awesome. I miss my Sega Saturn now lol.
The music was ambient and well composed on the Saturn. The fog on the Ancient Ruins stage was incredible looking, with clean transparencies and depth. I know this was a pretty decisive game, but after seeing it at my friend’s house on his Genesis, I had to get it for Saturn. It’s not what we deserved as far as 3D Sonic games on the Saturn, especially after seeing the stunning Sonic Jam 3D museum, but it’s not a bad game either. The only thing that made the game difficult was the speed, which made it feel like skating on ice the whole time, even more so on the ice stages.
One of the best soundtracks ever although that statement goes for every Sonic game. Even Sonic Adventure stole some of the songs and ideas like the homing attack.
I saw that the Windows version looked like the Saturn version and stopped watching the video to scroll down to the comments then once I read your comment I skipped to the bonus stages in the PC version and holy crap I thought the Saturn ones were bad at least you can see where all the rings are. Genesis FTW.
Saturn in easily the best version of the special stages. Def my favourite iteration of the half pipe stages. The genesis ones don't feel like they are special stages to be honest. There is hardly any challenge
I was born in 2002 and my mom introduced me to Genesis alongside the first and second sonic game from 1991/92. I'll never forget the endless times I've tried beating this game. I even tried to find glitches or secrets in Genesis too.
I thought I was pretty immune to the effects of nostalgia but then I heard the creaky bridge sound effect from the Windows version for the first time since 1998 and it flicked a switch in my brain and now I’m in my pajamas eating Capn Crunch and listening to Brain Stew (the Godzilla Remix) by Green Day featuring Godzilla available now at your local Sam Goody
used to play the PC version a lot when I was a kid but for some reason my game never had any music in it. I grew up assuming it was just like that, but I guess it was my pc being weird. It really changed everything a lot. It felt almost like an horror game without the music.
I tried to get ahold of the windows version and i couldn't turn on music as well. On Saturn emulators you need to launch specific file instead of a track so it can play the music so idk if it's a similiar situation on the windows version
I grew up with the Genesis version. As I recall it wasn't great to control but it was still fun and the music was great. Saturn version looks great -- with the new soundtrack by the same guy as Sonic R -- I'm very much getting Super Sonic Racing 90's dance vibes. Only downsides seem to be CD audio track loading speeds, and the camera angle in the special stage seems a bit off. PC version -- I was going nuts when the song didn't change at all for speed shoes (sometimes acceptable but the Saturn did it) and especially for invincibility. Plus the special stage, while more difficult than the Saturn looks worse than the Saturn. I had no idea that all three versions had entirely different special stages.
Yup, I got the Saturn version first and then the Genesis and vastly prefer the Saturn version. It has better (IMO) music, more and better animation in stages/etc, weather effects, and a better 3D bonus level. I hate that they keep regurgitating the Genesis version....
Aside for music. The Saturn versions OST isn't bad, but I would've preferred CD remixes of RR and VV. The Genesis' PPZ1 was also better, but that could've stayed as the intro song and the Saturn version could be the for the level, or vise versa
@@Turbotef It's the same thing they do with the 8-bit Sonic games. In every single official rerelease of those games, they're always the Game Gear versions, which suffer from a more washed out palette, worse sprites for Sonic (looking noseless 90% of the time) and - most egregiously - intense screen crunch. Literally, the only way to officially play the superior Master System versions of 8-bit Sonic 1 & 2 and Sonic Chaos are to buy the original versions on the actual Master System. Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 did get releases on the Wii Virtual Console, but tracking down a Wii with either game downloaded is probably harder than buying the original. Sonic 2 only had a Master System version in Europe, too, so you have to buy a European system that probably won't work on your TV if it's NTSC, plus the console itself won't work if you don't live in Europe or your sockets don't supply a 50Hz current. Sonic Chaos, which also only had a MS version in Europe, never even got a VC release, making it way rarer. There's just no official way to play the best versions of those three games outside of getting a PAL Master System. I do own one, so it's not a problem to me, but to many people, owning the most optimal versions of those games is completely impossible, which is a terrible shame because they're all worth playing.

For me the Saturn version is my favorite. It has the best quality for the intro video and the best graphics. Also, not many people know, but there is a map you can view to help you find your way around. Having said that, from what I've read, the changes in the director's cut might make it the best playing version as far as controls are concerned.

Having had both versions. I always though the mega drive music was better. Especially volcano valley. Also anyone else described that if you tape the cartridge as the ‘S’ is forming of the sega Logo. If you get it right it will bring up the level select. I found it by accident when I was 10.
I've only played the original Genesis version on GameCube. Its isometric perspective is a strange choice for a platformer, and I find its sensation of speed to be different from in other Sonic titles because of that and its confined world design, but I remember liking it. Had Sega remembered what made this game good and not completely lost the plot with later 2D and 3D titles, perhaps the Sonic series wouldn't have become the butt of jokes and instead continued to be a solid platformer franchise. If I was to play this one again, I'd probably opt for either the Genesis or Saturn versions. The Genesis version has music I find more memorable, but the Saturn version admittedly has better graphics. The Windows version seems good, too, but it seems to me like the hazards in its bonus stages are hard to see.
The original developer of this game has made an extensive series on it and the decisions they made. And one of his regrets was the sensation of speed was not as good as it could have been. But they were also running into hardware limits as it was. But he figures there was something they could have done to improve at least that one thing.
The glow effects for the pick ups has it turned on every other frame. If you watch the video in 30fps it is static and consistently covering sonic. In 60 fps you see how it's supposed to look. I knew something was off until I changed the resolution.
That's a trick they used for pseudo-transparency effects. The Genesis can't do transparency effects and real transparencies are very tough to pull off properly on Saturn, so showing it every other frame makes it look transparent when the game's not dropping frames.
Версия для Генезис не на много уступает по качеству графики двум другим версиям, но зато имеет ОТЛИЧНУЮ музыку!!! Следовательно - версия для Генезис - лучшая!
Ah good times. Still have my pc cd of it (they used the saturn version for the pc release) and it was one of the 2 sonic games I bought with my pocket money. (The other being sonic CD but I somehow broke it to think it was illigal; no idea how I managed to unburn a sega cd and delete stuff but I think that's what happened.) Anyway I always thought the stage effects made the world feel bigger and mysterious; like it had years of hidden secrets. And eggmans scary laugh with cd's made me think he was the satam version. Man to get a scarym intimiating eggman-like villian would be great to see again.
Whitout comment the Director's Cut hack, Saturn wins, the graphics, music, and, special stages, extremly superior to PC version, with good style Comment the Director's Cut version, this version wins (Director's Cut), revamps ALL of the original MD version, and, level editor, more control style and more! Request: Bomberman (1991), launched versions: PC Engine, Sharp X68000, MS-DOS, Amiga, and Atari ST Note: Good job with the comparison!
O port do Saturn é fantástico! tem apenas dois pontos negativos a tela de carregamento demorada e deixou passar a oportunidade de adicionar o Super Sonic.
Hearing several Sonic Adventure tracks, a good two years ahead of the DC release is still awesome today. I was more fond of the Jacques Saturn soundtrack but didn't really care for the game, outside of the demo we got on the Sega Flash demo discs in the UK. An isometric sonic game didn't really peak my interest at the time. I didn't get my Saturn until early 98. (I think I was actually still on the megadrive/mega cd at the time but playing something else. I wanna say Final Fight CD and Castlevania Bloodlines...🤔)
Why oh why did I own the Genesis version and not the Saturn version back in the day? Sega needs to rerelease the Saturn version instead of rereleasing the Genesis version over and over again.
I swear I played a version of the PC port that had the Megadrive Bonus Levels After seeing the comparison I defiantly prefer the Megadrive version over all the directors cut will be the version I play.
Well, the Megadrive version has been re-released later in PC, so we'll believe you :D . We have exclude It from the comparison because it's a megadrive emulation and it is actually in the video
The Saturn version essentially sits on top of a converted version of the original; given that it was done in seven weeks, it's a pretty decent achievement. However, for what it does with the hardware, the Mega Drive version is more impressive.
7:39 why couldn’t have this looked like the sonic game we should’ve gotten for the Saturn? Really sucks all we got was Sonic Jam and a remake of a genesis game. Don’t get me wrong Sonic Jam is pretty cool with the free roam world but it’s not a fully fledged sonic game that we should’ve gotten. RIP Sonic Xtreme
I remember owning the saturn version until my brother sold our saturn for a PS1, to me the saturn version is simply the best way to play the game. Windows 95 was good also but I remember being disappointed by the bonus stage but I was so young I didn't know why, now I can tell pretty clearly. It's nothing like the saturn version at all. I still don't get why sega sells the genesis version of this game all the time but not the blatantly superior saturn version.
The Genesis is still associated with Sega's finest moments. The Saturn unfortunately isn't. And while the Dreamcast was one last failure that caused them to leave the console market, it seems to be still associated to a good legacy. In short the Saturn sits in a grey area, further overshadowed many times over by the PS1 in that era.
Saturn version for me, sound, visuals and music. But, that's purely nostalgia. I first played this in 2002, and I still have my Saturn copy, but I also feel no need to ever play it again.
I remember adoring that Special Stage style, partly because it was all visible ahead of time and partly because it was the most fun half pipe design out there.
Nice vid, if only for showing off the director's cut. It looks cool but the game's still style over substance in my opinion. But seeing more devs go back to their old games and upgrade them would be neat.
Out of all those versions, I prefer the genesis. The music sounds better to me. Pretty much the only reason to play this game is the music and nostalgia for my youngin days
I still find it odd how Sega ported a lot of these games meant to be exclusives on the Genesis and Saturn to the PC. I'm not complaining, it's great that they did, just find it a bit odd during that era of furious competition.
I guess during late 1997, because the Saturn was on the decline and going to be discontinued soon, they decided to port some of their Saturn games to PC, in order for them to reach more people, why they didn’t do it for NiGHTs though is questionable, maybe because it was Japan developed.
The only thing Missing from the Saturn version was NO SUPER SONIC and if the transformation was available they should of used the you’re my hero theme from the intro for it.
Feel like a bit of a hybridization of the Saturn and PC version of the special stage would be best. More of that 3d sonic, maybe the same animation speed of running as the PC version. While graphically, the PC version isn't as good as the Saturn, the view of the track ahead is kinda cool

Steam deck?
I look forward for the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island to get the Director's Cut treatment. Here is what I want to see in the Director's Cut version of the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island: standard save/load system, save/load slots, no passwords, let Tails and Knuckles appear in the Gene Gadget and Panic Puppet levels, the option to switch between the Genesis/Mega Drive and Saturn version's soundtracks, the ability to transform into Super Sonic and play as Super Sonic after you get all of the 7 Chaos Emeralds plus 50 or more rings and Time Attack Mode.

Yup, I totally understand.
I almost forgot about the PC port and the Director's Cut version.
My ranking:
1. Saturn
2. Windows
3. Genesis
Did you see 12:35 though
@@trymsan4368 Yes, I've even played all three, so just let me have my opinion
@@trymsan4368 let him have his ways
The PC Special stage is... so sad compared to how amazing the Saturn one is! Haha
@@auralunaprettycure but I would still rather play the windows version over the genesis because of the soundtrack
Having had both versions. I always though the mega drive music was better. Especially volcano valley. Also anyone else described that if you tape the cartridge as the ‘S’ is forming of the sega Logo. If you get it right it will bring up the level select. I found it by accident when I was 10.
How i fell in love with the sonic franchise is because of this game and the other versions i still love this game to this day 😍 ❤❤😅😊
Green grove zone theme will forever be engraved in my mind as the Sammy classic sonic fan intro song
AWESOME SONIC 3D BLAST 1996 - VERSIONS COMPARISON !!!
It's funny to think that this game have 26 years old and we've never seen sky in it...
I like the Saturn version because of the graphics and sound being better than the Mega-Drive/Genesis version.
The Sega Saturn version is the best. Hands down.
trye
What genesis did with its hardware and this game (and intro!!) was AMAZING. Sega Genesis ❤️
When I first played the game and the guy yelled SEGA! I spilled my Coca Cola
Same, but it was coffee.
Hallelujah!!!!!! In the Directors cut version now sonic isn't running on ice!!!!!
Saturn has Sonic Speed Simulator Music.
The music in that game originates from the Saturn version.
I Know.
Версия для Генезис не на много уступает по качеству графики двум другим версиям, но зато имеет ОТЛИЧНУЮ музыку!!! Следовательно - версия для Генезис - лучшая!
Si
i have extremely vauge memories of playing this game
Ah good times. Still have my pc cd of it (they used the saturn version for the pc release) and it was one of the 2 sonic games I bought with my pocket money. (The other being sonic CD but I somehow broke it to think it was illigal; no idea how I managed to unburn a sega cd and delete stuff but I think that's what happened.)
Anyway I always thought the stage effects made the world feel bigger and mysterious; like it had years of hidden secrets. And eggmans scary laugh with cd's made me think he was the satam version. Man to get a scarym intimiating eggman-like villian would be great to see again.
I have so much fun for watching this level
Also windows is sega genegis and sega saturn
Where the game shines.
Saturn: Graphics, special stage
Genesis: Music
I actually prefer the Saturn soundtrack but to each their own.
Nobody:
Not a soul:
Subtitles:Woof
Whitout comment the Director's Cut hack, Saturn wins, the graphics, music, and, special stages, extremly superior to PC version, with good style
Comment the Director's Cut version, this version wins (Director's Cut), revamps ALL of the original MD version, and, level editor, more control style and more!
Request: Bomberman (1991), launched versions: PC Engine, Sharp X68000, MS-DOS, Amiga, and Atari ST
Note: Good job with the comparison!
Damn pc's in 1997 struggled running 3d blast at a constant 60 fps
O port do Saturn é fantástico! tem apenas dois pontos negativos a tela de carregamento demorada e deixou passar a oportunidade de adicionar o Super Sonic.
Yes I agree
gene gadget on the saturn has the best intro for any sonic level
sonic 3d blast for genesis is actually one of my favorite sonic games
Thanks to this game we get an awesome remake for the Circuit zone in adventure
Hearing several Sonic Adventure tracks, a good two years ahead of the DC release is still awesome today. I was more fond of the Jacques Saturn soundtrack but didn't really care for the game, outside of the demo we got on the Sega Flash demo discs in the UK. An isometric sonic game didn't really peak my interest at the time. I didn't get my Saturn until early 98. (I think I was actually still on the megadrive/mega cd at the time but playing something else. I wanna say Final Fight CD and Castlevania Bloodlines...🤔)
Nice!
They should rerelease the Saturn version in a compelation.
Saturn is by far the best version.
Why oh why did I own the Genesis version and not the Saturn version back in the day? Sega needs to rerelease the Saturn version instead of rereleasing the Genesis version over and over again.
I swear I played a version of the PC port that had the Megadrive Bonus Levels
After seeing the comparison I defiantly prefer the Megadrive version over all the directors cut will be the version I play.
Well, the Megadrive version has been re-released later in PC, so we'll believe you :D . We have exclude It from the comparison because it's a megadrive emulation and it is actually in the video
Ngl i liked the SS port the the 2017 Directors Cut as it made the first Genesis one a faded memory now.
I really do prefer the Genesis OST. Seems to have more energy and fit sonic a bit more in general.
Director's Cut Needs -
A Complete Remastery of Genesis Intro (Like Alot more pallete)
Green Grove Zone always gave me motion sickness.
The Saturn version essentially sits on top of a converted version of the original; given that it was done in seven weeks, it's a pretty decent achievement. However, for what it does with the hardware, the Mega Drive version is more impressive.
the saturn versions of green grove in sonic 3d blast is not so green as the orignal
Now i remember where i heard the speed simulator hub world music
Funny how the Genesis version has the best music. Much more fitting to a Sonic game.
Sonic Team
The Saturn's also difficult to emulate compared to the Genesis.
Saturn and Windows have detailed floors ngl
thay should've brought this to the 3ds
0:30 now I know from where come the first song on Twinkle Park, sorry for my ignorance, jeje
I grew up with the pc version of sonic 3D blast, the original 1997 copy.
I like the music for the Sega Saturn and Windows versions better.
Saturn version for me, sound, visuals and music. But, that's purely nostalgia. I first played this in 2002, and I still have my Saturn copy, but I also feel no need to ever play it again.
Yo....that Windows special stage is butt.......UGLY!!!!
Yes. The ugliest butt that is out there like, what Robin looks like from Teen Titans Go.
@@SN64YT No offence, but nothing you just said was grammatically correct.
It has the longer draw distance though...what is bad as you can see the piles of shitty graphics comming to you from a mile away
@@dusanstojsin4938 Oh yeah. My comment looks like a 5 year old wrote that lol.
Fun fact: originaly the flickies come from a game called "Flicky" by sega
Out of all those versions, I prefer the genesis. The music sounds better to me. Pretty much the only reason to play this game is the music and nostalgia for my youngin days
Que bien se veía la parte de Bonus en la SEGA Saturn, que feliz se deben haber sentido los 5 o 6 usuarios de la consola cuando lo vieron xD
@@Turbulation1 Very plausible. Though Nights would be ported to PC until much later on Steam, if I recall correctly.
I still remember playing this game back in the day. Not a bad game , but it is my least favorite game in Sonic franchise.
Sonic Spinball is the worst imo
The only thing Missing from the Saturn version was NO SUPER SONIC and if the transformation was available they should of used the you’re my hero theme from the intro for it.
Mario kart super circuit also has a directors cut has every improvement you can imagine like playing as miis
A track pack
Story mode
And more!
I personally don't like the Saturn but the Genesis port was one final game to show the amazing capabilities the Genesis had.
Genesis port? The genesis version was the original.
@@Turbulation1 No shit sherlock.
The guy playing the original Genesis version is pretty good at the game
Change my mind
I grew up with the PC version. I feel cheated with the watered down special stages lol
Am I the only one that like this game
Feel like a bit of a hybridization of the Saturn and PC version of the special stage would be best. More of that 3d sonic, maybe the same animation speed of running as the PC version. While graphically, the PC version isn't as good as the Saturn, the view of the track ahead is kinda cool
