If you guys ever feel like taking a trip to our studio in Canada to teach me how to paint better than the other guys on the team... I mean... that would be great, lol.
This is the PERFECT tutorial format! Lots of us often paint a mini to completion, but don't know how to give it that extra touch to take it up a notch. This is excellent! Please do many more vids like this! Thank you!
You really made my dwarf look fantastic! I repainted that glowing pipe 3-4 times trying to figure out what wasn’t looking right. Now I know ☺️. Great advice! Thank you!
Honestly, I liked your glowing effect a bit more. You did a damn good job on the dwarf! The head looks better afterwards, but your nose was more dwarfy. Keep up the good work!
Your paint job was fine. If you have access to an airbrush what you can try next time if you feel like it is make the surface white. airbrush white around the areas the light will hit, then do the same airbrushing with a bright blue like pylar glaciar or tyran blue After that you hit it with another highlighting of white in the "heat zones" as well as edge highlighting sharp areas that are being affected by the glow. Trust me the results are amazing.
Have you ever thought of giving a pic at Gaming Distance during your reveals, to go along with the close up, to show us what our view would be typically? The close view is nice for fine detail but can make us think that is how the figure should look at gaming distance.
That would be pretty useful for better showcasing which areas are the most important to focus on for making things read well. It can be easy to forget about when you are focused in.
As an Australian I am thankful to have moved to Canada a decade ago for the sole purpose of learning to paint better. I am almost at the level of applying for citizenship, but I have to work on my NMM...
Hope this is a continual series! The advice is great to see and watch and I can apply it to my own painting skills depending on each mini and what can be improved on each one in different ways! Love it!
I feel like with the first model, I see what they were going for. Kind of an object shadows highlight. The part of the head right behind the headdress was in shadow despite being a high point, could have added an outline of the feathers to highlight rather than completely highlight, but that wouldn't have been fast at all. Might have been the same on the torso? Like the big chin causing some shadows on the upper chest. Your additions are definitely an improvement but I think the original artist had some unique ideas I want to try now
This is one of the most helpful videos on mini-painting I've seen. I hope other youtube artists model this sort of thing. I remember asking myself while watching specifically the parts about pushing the contrast "Oh, that's all it is, but look at the difference!" But you don't always see that when you're watching a pro go from start-to-finish. Thanks so much!
I loved this video! So many times I sit and think “it needs something but I don’t know how to take it where I want it to go” more of these please! Y’all are the best! Enjoy your vacation!🤙🏻
I prefer the after ork. I see people say the original is more "Grimdark", but to me "Grimdark" is not a lack of brighter colors or subdued colors, its more about the overall figure looking like it belongs in a setting that shows wear and tear from active use.
It's a great observation. Some of this was artistic choice, but also the "light source direction" can sometimes benefit from being unrealistic for minis being viewed 360 degrees, like for game pieces. Front-on viewing only, you might make slightly different choices.
@@BloomThat true! But the only reason I was asking and pointing it out was because I was wondering if he actually had a connection with this person?!? Because if could have been what they were going for, but it kinda sounded like he was saying “there was NO reason for a shadow there” to me……………… so I was curious!?! Anything new I can learn I will try to get the most out of it!!!
@@AcoylteKraven82 Ultimately miniature painting moves into set photography skills, in the sense that you don't just want the light to be realistic, but to place the lights in the right places for the miniature to look their best. I can make a lot of terrible pictures that aren't caused by the light being fake (as it's always real, it's a camera!), or the subject being bad, but the light sources being the wrong hue, or placed in locations that don't help the subject look good. A lot of lighting you see in stills, and even in movies, includes plenty of secondary lights that you would never find in real life: See basically every night scene, or anything lit by candlelight. So can I get a light setup that makes the crown create a shadow? Sure! But does it make the subject look better? Probably not
@@jorgemontero6384 Ummmmm, ok……… I can’t tell if you are answering a reply I will leave in the future or if you were trying to reply to someone else’s comment that kinda had something to do with lighting also and something went wrong or your just messing with me?!? Yeah, I get taken a picture of anything is like taking a picture of a mini! But at no point was I talking any studio lighting or lighting to be able to film a movie or show!?! I was talking about the NORMAL lighting when you walk outside and the sun is in your face, where would the shadows fall!?! Like in the case of the model in question…… I’m not asking how the light should fall on it in his studio at his paint desk! I’m asking about the lighting if that creature was REAL AND ON THE BATTLEFIELD!!! But honestly I’m not sure where you were going with that?!? Since you were replying to the 2nd message I left (for the obvious reason! Unless you’re new to RUclips) but were talking a bit more about the original comment, but that was corrected in the 2nd part!!! But I don’t know!?!
I admit I don’t really care if my paint jobs look good or bad as long as that pass that 3+ color rule and don’t look like crap when you’re playing with them on the tabletop that’s good enough for me. With that being said I do appreciate learning new skills that can make my painting better especially if I decide to really go all out on a model
Very nice guys. It shows perfectly how what looks like "over the top" when painting it looks just perfectly right when finished. Now, if I only had the guts to push my mini's that 1 step further...
Something that drastically improved my understanding of painting muscles and skin was how you demonstrated taking the highlight all the way up to the connecting muscle. I Choudhary figure out why my models had a weird muscle appearance, but seeing how you painted the frogs highlights really drove the point on how to make it look more natural. What a small tip, but a huge impact on the results. Thank you for showing that!
great tips overall! always nice to have an external look on your paintjobs to improve and you guys sure know what you're talking about. I do however feel like the ork was kinda disrespected in its own regards, you took that brownish grimdark orc and made it back to a generic one, i think you could've done pretty much the same and still manage to keep the original feeling of this guy cause this ork's owner will either have to repaint this mini or his whole army for it to fit back in
My whole view the last what, 6 years, is better done than perfect. Which has led me to a lot of painted minis, some looking way worse, and some better. But at least they are done and to a better than decent standard most of the time :)
Its good that you are happy with it, but ngl dude, i personnally feel like it looked even better before they touched it, you are already an insane painter my guy :,)
MORE CONTRAST!!! My tips on how much is enough highlight: make a lot, a really lot, and just when you think you have made too much and have ruined the mini, put another layer highlights. THAT is the correct amount of highlights. Continue with the mini and thank me later.
Kind of wish you'd push contrast by working with brightness and shadoes without increasing saturation on the orc. It kind of misses the point when you change the art style completely. Not every mini has to be oversaturated like crazy even though that's the mini painting meta for some reason.
Just started painting this year and did some blue boys and nids. I was quite happy and was going to post them online for progress and feedback. Turns out there is no point, as an Aussie I know now I will never be good.
Was about to comment about it. The original one looks more grimdark and the after looks more like "regular" ork. I'm not sayin its bad, bit it feels like it took away some of the character and style.

When you mentioned connecting muscles, is that just making sure the shadow between each muscle isnt too dark, or do you connect the highlights over each one
Have the same issue. Still dont really get what "connect the muscles" actually means. I hear the words, I see them making brushstrokes, but it doesnt connect in my mind since its still too abstract for me.
It's a bit of both, where the deepest creases are you want to stay dark, but the shallower separations you want to join with your mid-tones. And if those points are closest to the light source, you can also join with your highlight. Hope my ramblings are helpful.
ruclips.net/video/xDGrCkSd1DE/видео.htmlsi=tIb5j8WQ0ABusuBl This video may be helpful, as he demonstrates the difference whilst painting the model's thigh muscles. Initially, he'd separated them with too much shadow.
Very nicely done, like'em so far. Only gripe is the orc one. While I get, that the mini was on the messy side anda bit difficult to read, it was also really gritty / grim dark. The overhaul, while I like it, has a different vibe. I personally would've liked to keep the skin some kind of olive and don't go too much into the saturated greens. The edge highlights on weapons and shoulders definitively helped though.
