  • The two memoirs I read in 2023 both dealt with being raised by narcissistic parents and boy, can I relate to that. I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jeannette McCurdy and The Woman in Me by Britney Spears were challenging as they covered heavy subject matter and unlocked deep feelings.

    The Coogan Act was passed in 1939 (named after child actor Jackie Coogan) to try to mitigate financial abuse of child actors. Basically it requires employers to set aside a small percentage of their pay into a trust and regulates work hours, schooling, etc. It's been revised multiple times but there is still a lot of opportunity for abuse. If the the child isn't making noise to people about being unhappy, the parents can get away with a lot.

      Thank you for this information! I had a feeling that there was some kind of law; I just couldn't remember, and when I did a quick search, nothing concrete really came up. I really appreciate knowing the law now. It's sad that it looks like it is only specific to financial abuse and doesn't appear to be as enforced as it should be. It seems wild that an abused child would need to raise so much hell in order to make a claim when that would be so hard to do. I hope more changes are made AND that they are actually enforced! Thank you for checking out my video. 💜

    While I wasn't raised by a narcissistic mother, my mom was, and some of the things written by Jennette reminded me of the little nuggets that I sometimes get out of my mom. My relationship with my mom isn't great, but whenever it gets bad I think about how she has done the best with what she knew and that she is just a person.

      This is very true. We are all human and granting grace is commendable, but I also feel that if you are at the end of your rope it is also fair to cut ties for your mental health. I hope your relationship with your mom is heading on a positive path. Thank you for checking out my video. 💜

    It was a little wild how much I related to these memoirs. I'm still happy I decided to pick them up and read them.

    These are both on my TBR for this year, as I’m officially one-year no-contact with my own narcissistic abusers. I really appreciate your thoughts and insight on both, I know they’ll be difficult for me, but I agree that they are so important.

      A heartfelt congratulations for being strong enough to remove yourself form a harmful situation. I hope you are doing better as the road to heal can be long and hard. Thank you for your positive comment, I really appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed my review. I do highly recommend these books, but especially for Jeannette's book, please be mindful of your triggers. I hope you get as much out of them as I did. 💜

    I read the Woman In Me and yes I agree I do feel like the writing was a bit immature, but in the book she did state that she was reverting back to being a kid under the conservatorship, I’m not sure if that was a self defense mechanism for her to protect herself from her father, but I do feel like she got emotionally stunted, and she definitely needs time to be away from her father in order to get into a better place. I know she is trying to have a better relationship with her mom, and honestly I think that is a BAD idea, but I’m not her so it’s her choice to make. I did hear (I’m not sure if this is rumor or fact) that before the ebook was published, the page count got changed. Someone had said that Justin’s lawyers had a hand in her book. Again not sure if that is rumor or not. I will say based on Justin’s previous behavior, this wouldn’t shock me if it is true.
    As for Jennette McCurdy’s book I haven’t read it yet, but I need to soon. I have a feeling it will emotionally wreck me, because I have grown up with an emotionally neglectful mom who has gotten worse the older she gets. I rarely talk to my mom now, because of the things she has said and done to me over the years. My mom definitely has narcissistic traits.

      Yeah, I stand by what I said in that I think the tone of the writing for Britney's book was intentionally made to sound more immature and I personally feel like it works well enough. I agree that she should take a step back from her entire family, but like I said, it's hard to get to the point where you cut off family. She already lost her dad, I can see why she is trying to work things out with her mom, though I also don't think it will end well.
      I didn't know about the page count change, that is so interesting. I had a feeling JT knew about the book well in advance. I'm convinced that's the only reason he did an NSync "Reunion." Trying to shield himself and it's crazy that it worked for the most part.
      I highly recommend Jennette McCurdy's book. But it is a lot heavier than Britney's so just be aware and take care of yourself when you decide to pick it up. I'm sorry you are going through something similar. It's a horrible thing to go through no matter your age. Thank you for your insights and for checking out my video. I really appreciate it. 💜

      @@cj2130 I completely agree with all you said. It really is different layers of trauma. After all that, I think it's wild that some people still expect someone whose gone through that kind of abuse to just be normal and "act their age."

    I can't express how much I relate to this video. I got an audiobook free trial to listen to Britney's book and right after that I listened to Jenette's (both in english). They really spoke to me in a deep level. Hope they help other people 😌

    Any time I hear someone criticize abuse survivors for speaking about the narcissistic abuse, I assume that person is also a narcissistic.

    • @Witchy_Reads
      @Witchy_Reads  6 месяцев назад +2

      A lot of people are just unaware. I don't necessarily think that makes them a narcissist, just that they have been lucky in this instance to not have lived through that. I do think people need to be more open to other people's experiences and believe victims when they say they were abused. They should also allow them to grieve and heal in whatever way works for them. Thank you for checking out my video! 💜

    loved the video. Jeanettes book really hit me because i also had a parent who suffered and passed from a medical condition and while im not glad they died, it was so cathartic to read someone else's life that was effected by that looming fear of death of a parent...and being a caretaker and feeling responsible for them.

      I'm so sorry for your loss. That must have been a tough experience to go through. It does give a different perspective on something Jennette went through as well. That is something I don't have experience with, but I can empathize. Thank you for checking out my channel. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 💜

    I Woman in Me a really interesting listen, although i did have some issue with the delivery by Michelle Williams, but I am glad i listened to it. Like you I dont hit non-fiction often, but I am glad i gave it a listen. Great video!

    • @Witchy_Reads
      @Witchy_Reads  6 месяцев назад +1

      I can see that. While Michelle Williams' delivery didn't bother me too much, I still prefer when authors read their own memoirs. The fact is, no one is really going to convey the emotion you are trying to express as well as you because you lived it.
      I'm glad I read both of these books, but I might take a long break from non-fiction for now. I rarely read it, but I think I need a break after these two.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you! 😊

    If all of this is interesting to you and you're curious to learn more about what protections do and do not exist for child performers, Alyson stoner's RUclips series "Dear Hollywood" is a fantastic resource.

    There are few laws actually protecting children should actual foul play be involved.
    When the legal guardians are involved there is basically no god
    Mine tried to put me in an institution for talking back to her. Talking back.
    It almost happened.
    There is no hell like your own parents being evil.

    • @Witchy_Reads
      @Witchy_Reads  5 месяцев назад

      That's terrible! I can't understand parents who are this way, I just can't. I'm sorry that happened to you.
      I've since learned about the laws, but it seems they aren't doing a good job of enforcing them and children are too scared to speak out. So even with the laws it feels like nothing is being done.
