A place to discuss books and other bookish things. There will be ✨SPOILERS✨
Videos are posted weekly.
I am a Witch. I like to read. That makes me a Bookish Witch!
I enjoy stories that focus on powerful, resilient ✨women✨ and the people that come and go in their lives. These women don't necessarily have to be witches themselves, but you'll soon find that is a running theme in the books I actively choose to read. These characters are found in a multitude of genres, from Queer Horror to Urban Fantasy to Romance.
🍂Some Bookish Things I'll probably talk about on my Channel:
Vlogs about Book Festivals and other Bookish events (The goal is to travel more outside my city and state)
Honest, in-depth book reviews (Spoilers)

Did anyone else have a book goblin summer? 😂📚
That’s quite the mix of books! Glad you enjoyed some of em even if they weren’t all books you picked! Happy reading!😊
Yeah, I was kind of all over the place this last season. 😅 But it was fun! Thanks for watching! 💜
@@Witchy_Reads all over the place is fun! I’m a mood reader, so it’s fun to be mixed 😊
Love the smart house reference! Yay Graveyard Shift!! Horror for weenies 🤣Cool concept for a read.
I couldn't help it! It's where my brain immediately went. 😅 I'm definitely going to try to read Graveyard Shift sooner rather than later. Horror for weenies is so good for those who want to get horror pop culture references, but can't handle horror movies, genius!
Grave Yard Shift is on my list, we came to meet you sounds really interesting to me as well. Thanks for highlighting these, I had only heard of one before beforehand ❤
Yeah, it seems a lot of people have Graveyard Shift on their TBR, which is very cool. All of these sound so interesting to me, but realistically I'm probably only going to get to a couple. Probably Graveyard Shift and We Kept Her in the Cellar. Thanks for watching!💜
Great breakdown of new releases! The first two and the Cinderella one sound the most intriguing to me. 👻 I agree with what you said about how the atmosphere of being creeped out is so much fun and I love it when it’s done well and it makes you want to keep reading.
Thank you! I fully believe a good atmosphere can make or break a good horror story. The first one and the Cinderella one for sure are ones I want to read sooner rather than later!
Congratulations on one year! 💜
Thank you so much! 💜
Happy Booktube Birthday 🎉
Thank you! 💜
Thank you! 💜 I can't wait to see what this next year brings!
I have we came to welcome you from the library right now I'm so excited you recommending it
That ones sounds soooo creepy! Definitely interested in reading it at some point!
This new batch of horror reads are sure to be a great time! Do any of them sound good to you? 👻
i was super shocked by the brigerton like setting and did feel overall the plot was all over the place but i did give 4 stars!! sorry you did not have the same luck
There were quite a few things that bothered me about this book, but I do think the biggest thing was the time period setting. Fixing that one thing could have upped my enjoyment a lot. But I know a lot of people like this book, and I don't want to yuck anyone's yum.
Glad you had a good time with these, it's amazing how much difference a good narrator can make
For sure! I've noticed that I'm starting to enjoy specific narrators/readers of audiobooks as I start to listen to them more. I think another aspect was my ADHD. My brain was just not processing the story as it should because I knew how long The House Witch was and it was detrimental to my reading experience. Anything over 400 pages is difficult for me. I'm so glad these were fun reads, it's what I was hoping for! Thank you for watching! 💜
@@Witchy_Reads I have a couple that i gravitate to, and some that I avoid now. 400 page+ books didn't used to bother me but I don't read many that go over that now tbh
I love the way you have described Slewfoot. I do not think I would have continued after what you mentioned happened to the cat, but the rest of the story sounds absolutely amazing. I'm contemplating picking up The House Witch, but I'm just not sure. I like cozy but for 600 plus pages? I may yet pick it up. We shall see.
Yeah, I think I pushed through with Slewfoot because I was loving everything else and at that point I was so close to the end that I really wanted to know what happened. I'm glad I decided to stick with it, though that scene was rough. The House Witch is definitely not for everyone. I can see someone who really loves a well rounded/complete plot getting really frustrated with it as it feels that nothing is really happening on that front. This is more for character driven readers, which is why I enjoyed it despite it's little flaws. I don't know if you would enjoy it, but let me know if you give it a go! This was such a fun competition, thank you for including me!
House Witch has been on my TBR for a while now. I think I got a better understanding of what I should expect from it after this video. I'm gonna try to get the audiobook as well. I'm glad you enjoyed both of the recommendations, can't wait to see the results on Saturday. ☺
I definitely recommend the audiobook, especially if you're like me. I also noticed others had similar issues reading the eBook or physical copy. I will warn you, nothing will prepare you for the voice done for the cat. 😅
Sorry the footage is a little blurry in this one. Still getting used to that camera and I didn't get the settings just right for this one. I promise I'll get better! 💜😅
I honestly think that your camera may have been focusing on the cat plushy behind you. I've seen people have to cover up things like that to make their cameras realize that they are the focal point. 🤣 It could have just been the setting, but I choose to believe that your camera loves cats.
@@Danni.Dabbles I would believe that if I knew exactly how this camera worked. LOL It's technically new to me so I'm still working out the kinks. If I continue doing vlogs I really need to figure out the autofocus. 😅
Yes! This is why I have a couple books downloaded on my phone at all times and a physical book at home
Same! 💜
😂
🤣
What a rollercoaster!!! fun times!
A rollercoaster of chaotic book emotions!! 😆 All the fun!
i love your thoughts on this books!!! books about magic have my whole heart lol :)
😅 I'm glad my ramblings made sense! I also love books with magic, I just tend to be very strict on sticking to the rules of whatever magic system the book decides to implement. I am hard to sway if the author breaks those rules part way through.
Loving the vlogs, I have Alice in Borderlands on my shelf, really need to start clearing my manga
Thank you! Alice in Borderland was a fun read, I'm definitely interested in at least looking into the adaptation.
Ohhhh nooo I am so sorry you did not enjoy Honey Witch!! Loved to hear all your thoughts about that because I have only read good reviews for it!!! So happy you enjoyed Alice in Borderland!! I have read a few volumes and loveeee the series!! But the adaptation? Chefs kiss!!!!! 😍😍
Honestly, I think the marketing for The Honey Witch did a lot of heavy lifting because just reading the synopsis I was excited for it. I think that's why it was such a disappointment. I do plan on watching the Alice in Borderland adaptation! I'll let you know what I think!
@@Witchy_Reads Alice in borderland is one of my favorite things!!!
OMG, finally found someone that put everything I felt was wrong with Honey Witch into words for me. I was so surprised how much love this book gets considering all of the problems it had with characterisation and plot development. It's been an interesting week with some surprising choices and outcomes, excited to see how you all do in the next one. 😊
I'm so glad I'm not alone in my feelings. I've only seen good things about the book and the reviews on Goodreads are so confusing to me. LOL
Miss week 1?! THE GALL XD obviously I joke. Once again i love this video, I love how you just go off about your thoughts in the moment. I'm unsure about the honey witch, ugh spinsterhood. when a character doesn't really have anything to them and the magic system is a bit meh its frustrating because there is nothing to draw you in or connect with. I will pass on that one lol But as a nerd for manga and anime - this is one that I have been wanting to read. I shall take the dive on that one for sure. Love the video, keep up the amazing hard work you are doing! MUCH LOVE!
I was so worried I was going to come off as too mean about The Honey Witch. But it was so bad! Definitely loved the manga more and will be checking out the anime and adaptation. Thank you for the support and for watching! 💜
@@Witchy_Reads not at all! i get it. and I'm glad you enjoyed them tbh, and anytime friend!
I feel like I'm going to be an outlier on my feelings for The Honey Witch. 😬
I don't know about that. I've heard really mixed reviews, so I don't think you are alone. It is one that I might end up skipping. Glad Alice and Borderlands was a surprise!!!
@@Danni.Dabbles that makes me feel a better. 😅 I definitely wouldn't recommend it, but if others like it I'm not going to judge.
You had me rolling with some of your clips! Glad you find a new favorite!
😂😅 I'm glad it was entertaining!
Yesssss!!!
😄
I’m definitely laughing whenever Lucien speaks ❤️ (and Nesta lol)
Right!? Like, I find Lucien so funny and way more attractive as a love interest, but teenage angst means we gotta go after the brooding boy. Lol
@@Witchy_Reads haha so true, I would've loved Tamlin 20 years ago lol!
I loved this
Awww! Thank you! I hope I came off as just the right amount of chaotic. 😁
@@Witchy_Reads We are ALL chaotic here 🙂
@@vens_corner 😂😅
Great video happy autumn 🍁 🎃🍂📚☕
Thank you! Yes, it's finally autumn! 👻🎃🍂🧹
As my name is Leandra, I jumped to attention every time you said "Leander" 🤣 Is it crazy that this may be my main reason for not being able to pick up this book? hahaha CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST EVER READING VLOG!!!!
That makes total sense. I've not encountered a book where a MC has my name, so I have no idea if I would be able to read it or not. Thank you for the support! 💜
I found this so fun!! That we read the same books and although our experiences were kinda similiar they were also very differente!
We definitely came to similar conclusions, but took different paths to get there. 😅 Which was so fun to see!
I had a blast reading these books! I hope my fellow competitors had an equally good time!
Night birds sounded like a promising concept- sorry it didn’t work so well for you!
It did sound like a promising concept! There were some things in the synopsis that had me a little skeptical, but on the whole I thought it sounded good. There were some good moments, but yeah, it didn't deliver what I was hoping for.
This video is great! I thoughtful and relevant. Thanks for your point, I do adore a lot of these female characters who are getting their revenge, but I don't think that that needs to be the only way. Obviously people can become self-empowered as a resolved of a multitude of events. I really appreciate it when you pointed it out. How survivors are a mess. I think that's very salient. I always tell people it's a capitalist lie that we have to suffer in order to produce art. It's just a way of making us more complacent with her suffering. And I think that idea speaks to what you're saying here
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video and related to the topic. This is one of the major tropes that I want to keep calling out because of how bad it is and how often it is used. Thank you for watching! 💜
I read a few years ago that Alan Dean Foster was not paid for those books. He started fighting Disney who now owns everything and the debts. They tried to ignore him but he recently got some payments as they did not want it to go to court.
Good for him! It's wild that he wasn't initially paid for his work.
I just rewatched Alien and read the novelization. They only seemed to skip one part and had more dialogue that the movie but it wasn’t adding anything really. There was added scene near the end which was filmed but edited out till a special director’s cut came out later. Overall a good job on the novel.
Interesting! I'm excited to read it and see what I think of the few differences.
THIS IS ME!!!
🤣🤣🤣
I am not capable of thinking that far ahead, tbh at this point I think October/November are going to be catch up months for me at this point lol, although i am planning on looking at a some retellings/reimaging's of Sleepy Hollow/The Headless Horseman tales, if for no other reason than I have an excuse to rewatch the moves I can't wait to hear your thoughts on any that you get to.
That's fair. I've been trying to be better about planning ahead, this is the first glimpse of that. We'll see how it goes. 😅 Ooooooo! Tell me more about the Sleepy Hollow retellings!? I'd be curious to read something like that. Though the last Sleepy Hollow-esq book was a huge disappointment for me. I have read The Unmothers - it was alright. It was not nearly as visceral as I had imagined it would be and had a bit of a non-ending. Wasn't very satisfying. I'm currently reading A Mask of Flies when I need a break from ACOTAR. I'm enjoying so far. Definitely more scary, which is what I was hoping for.
@@Witchy_Reads yay for better
Hi, new subscriber here and this is my new favorite channel! I'm also an avid reader who practices witchcraft!
Welcome! I'm so glad you found my channel and that you're here! 💜 What do you gravitate towards as a witch? I'm partial to crystals. Also, what's your go to book genre?
@@Witchy_Reads I call myself a green witch, I'm an herbalist as my job! I run a horror book club so I was definitely taking notes during this video.
@@SarahEsmaeWolfe An herbalist!? That's so cool! Ah! Horror bookclub! What kind of books has your club read recently?
@@Witchy_Reads we read gothic, horror, paranormal, and the like, we just finished Starling House and before that was How to Sell a Haunted House!
@@SarahEsmaeWolfe Ooooo, how was How to Sell a Haunted House? I have a complicated reader history with Grady Hendrix. I'm not a fan of the books I've read of his, but I've heard his older stuff might be worth reading.
Thank you for voicing this, I had trouble describing why weyward bothered me so much when everyone else gave it glowing reviews. I thought I was just being dramatic by being bothered by the violence. I didn't find it hopeful or inspiring at all.
Yeah, reading Weyward was not the experience I was hoping for. It failed in every way narratively. The violence against women was completely unnecessary and gratuitous in some cases. I've seen a few others mention that they were disappointed, but couldn't exactly vocalize why. I'm glad my video is able to help with that. Thank you for watching! 💜
They say write what you know. So when I write, it's hard not to include sa in my stories. I'm slowly moving away from it but it is present in my first stories.
I think if you are writing a story that includes SA for a purpose and it adds something, then those are important stories to tell. What I was talking about is a specific trope that only adds things like SA to stories for shock or plot motivation without any real narrative purpose. I've read plenty of stories with violence, including SA that I found meaningful. It all depends on how it's presented. Thank you for watching! 💜
Ooo The Unmothers sounds unsettling. Will definitely be checking out that one.
Agreed! I love folklore especially when it's creepy. That's why this book interested me so much. Plus, I like the idea of it being focused on the horrors of being a woman. What a neat idea for a horror story! Let me know if you end up picking it up and enjoying it. Thank you for watching! 💜
What spooky reads do you plan on reading?
Agree completely. … These experiences do not make anyone stronger, they are designed to cripple and they do, behind whatever facade you erect or however you dissociate. These days I refuse to see dramas, films, ballets, operas and read books involving these (back or front) stories. Why? Apart from being triggering, it is because the reality is they display gratuitous misogynistic cruelty as entertainment, dressed up hypocritically as “reality” or “education” or “meaningful”. Playwrights, choreographers , lyricists or authors using these scenarios might think or claim or even believe it gives their works street cred or depth but they don’t. Healing from assault is a deep process far more mysterious and interesting than revenge or becoming a bully yourself or religious mumbo jumbo. Anyway. :)
Exactly! I always try to avoid them, but sometimes it's not made clear that this is in the story. I know I've been fooled plenty of times and I'm sure it will happen again. All I can do is point it out and explain why it's something we need less of. As I said, there are soooo many other options for women in stories. Thanks for watching! 💜
Love this! and totally agree with many of your points and icks!!!
Thanks! Yeah, this book was a disappointment to say the least. Woof.
I think thing o may have said its best worst book i have read 😂, nwver toing to read th rest...
From what I've been told you read ACOTAR to get to ACOMAF. So I might continue this. 😬 I'm having a good time, so let's hope that feeling continues...
@@Witchy_Reads I hope so!!! I know Noah appreciated it more than i did lol
I love A ______ of _____ and ____.
I am definitely enjoying this.
Has ANYONE else had a similar experience with this book?
Sooo sad! I don't even know how it would feel to live in a book desert... it's a heartbreaking idea to me. I'd love to randomly post books to these areas if I knew where they are. I have. question though... does Costco require a membership to shop there for your country? In the Uk Costco requires a paid for membership and tend to be in areas that you can only get to with a car so would not impact areas of people that have less money. Great video... thanks for putting this together! It's so useful to have videos like this!
In researching this video was the first time I heard about book deserts and I agree it's incredibly sad. Costco does require memberships here as well, but the thing about book deserts is that they aren't necessarily in extremely poor areas. In looking at the map, it appears there are a lot of middle to lower-middle class areas that are affected too. So then removing Costco as an option could potentially be devastating (in terms of books) for those areas. Thank you for the kind words and for watching!💜
Found Family is my favourite trope... I loved this book 🥰 I don't mind if they're realistic or aspirational... for me it just fills my heart full of happiness.
Found family is one of my favorite tropes as well! I loved this story, so I don't mind that some felt it was unrealistic. It's what I would hope space exploration would be like. Thank you for watching! 💜
