I learned how to play saxophone. Many years ago from a guy who was in the New York musicians Union, and he played with Benny Goodman. Sammy Kay k the Dorsey brothers and Glenn Miller like he played with all the big bands.. He told me to attach my read. The same as you said to attach your read like a fingernail distance from the top of the mouthpiece. After being in the Marine Corps and going to college. Get in a real job. I finally decided to start playing again. So I started taking lessons and the few teachers that I had told me. I was putting the read on wrong. I started to think I was getting false memories. Thank you.

Thanks for the video and tips. I've started trying to teach myself how to play the clarinet because I miss playing a musical instrument and nostalgia from my band years. Played trombone then switched to tuba during high school. You're video has given me some great instruction and a few tid bits that are interesting. I haven't played for some years or a woodwind at all and the embouchures for mouthpiece instruments are different than wood winds. Its a challenge but within time I'll learn.

I’ve been playing brass instruments (mainly french horn) for over 6 years now, and have acquired an old clarinet from a family member. Think it’ll be interesting to challenge myself and attempt learning an instrument where I can’t just translate my skills to a different sized mouthpiece. Quick note: I’m being picky here but many brass instruments also have their music notated in treble clef, including French Horn and Trumpet. Bass Clef is typically reserved for instruments like Euphonium and Trombone.

I am 65 male. Played last at 15. For the third time I am trying again. And you here is where I'm starting. Always had a reed placement problem. So I hope this Selmer CL201 last longer that the awesome looking one I tried 13 years ago. It was wood also but had a cool bell with fine detail scrolled into it. So, thanks. So just as mask wearing taught us to brush our teeth good, better, so it is with this. Here we go!

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH I’m in 4 th grade and I’m starting to play clarinet but my teacher forgot to explain how to do all of that. (Probably because of the time. Oh because I’m just so excited to play again I just wanted to play right away instead of waiting next week to learn)

im planning on joining my school's band and playing the clarinet (like my big sister, who gave me hers.) i dont have a reed but they do give you one at band, and they teach you how to play the instruments if you dont know (or at least thats what i was told.) i hope i dont have any trouble joining, and this video will definitely give me a good idea on whats even happening lol.

One other thing my first instructor taught me was to put a drop of oil onto the leather pads. When I first started learning, they had tubers of grease, which was thick but still portable.

PLEASE DO NOT START ON A RICO SIZE 1 OR 1.5 REED!!!
It will be way too soft and you will never develop a real embouchure. I recommend at least a size 2 Vandoren (2.5 in Rico if you must but I highly recommend starting on Vandoren).
The goal for most mouthpieces should be somewhere around a Vandoren size 3 after about the first six months.
Though it may not be quite as easy, harder reeds will promote better air support and embouchure strength. Don’t go too hard though, harder reeds don’t mean you are a better player...
Otherwise everything else in this video is pretty good!
