I watched dozens of beginner clips and could only make squeaks. Before the video was over, I was wailing. I'm 75 with COPD and practice makes my oxygen level soar to 99%. Thanks a ton.
I recently switched from drums to clarinet in band and this will help a lot! I've never played clarinet and I wanna show my director that I know what I'm doing and that I'll be good at playing it. Thank you for this!
I'm 61 and just ordered /bought a used instrument on ebay and some reeds from Amazon, 2.5 royals. I'm doing my research b4 the clarinet gets hear and this helps a lot. Trying to keep the old brain thinking so I'm learn the clarinet. It also helps fulfill a dream. I loved Benny Goodman as a kid but my parents didn't understand English well ( just from the Philippines) and bought me a coronet instead. I tried it but I didn't continue because there were just so many good players that i got shy. Still shy, but I don't feel the pressure and it's the instrument that I originally wanted to learn on from the beginning.🤣 Found another person i like on the clarinet, Eddie Daniels. I'll be happy if I can play Happy birthday for my grandnieces. Again thank you for taking the time to teach us. Very succinct and clear directions.✌️😊
Excellent excellent video. I play trumpet, and I'm teaching my daughter how tead music. She is learning the clarinet, and although I've played with clarinet players my whole career, I never paid any attention to how they play their instrument. Thank you for such a thorough and simple explanation. I know this help!
Oh my god. Dude, I’m in 6th grade and I’m 11. I just joined beginner band in my school, and sixth grade’s been tough. Especially because of band. My sound is too flat, according to my director. So I took it a step back and went to mouthpiece and barrel, so i can get a sharper sound. And man, I watched so many RUclips tutorials and nothing worked and I was literally making an ‘F’ sound on mouthpiece and barrel. But after I watched your video and awesome demonstrations of how the mouth should be, I can make a perfect F sharp! Thank you so, so SO much. I can finally show my band director what I’m capable of thanks to you.
I have an old metal clarinet & I had difficulty producing the sound, now know d proper way to get that mouthpiece to my teeth & lower lips & blow properly. Very helpful to a trying hard learning sr citizen like me. Thanks!
Thanks I’m a beginner just started 5th grade band I sounded terrible In front of my director and I hope next Monday I’ll show them what I can actually do because of you 😃
Great. My 9 year old son has just arrived home with a clarinet and I had no idea how to set up this Reed. He has dispraxia so this could get interesting 😂
hi teacher! your video helped me learn English vocabulary about clarinet. I have played clarinet since I was 11... I love this instrument and everything that music can bring to us. Thank you very much for your lesson
You are so underrated :(. I wish you got more recognition, this helped me with my music class a lot, I am sure I will get A on this one! Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Hite mouthpieces are good and beginners should start with number 2 size reeds until they get the hang of getting a good solid tone. Then increase the size as you get better (2.5, 3, 3.5 etc)
It’s was so confusing, the embochure because I was previously a flute player and it feels weird to have your mouth like that… Thanks for helping 😊 4:23 literally me when I started without any guidance…
Thank you! After assembling and disassembling the instrument and some strange sound between them, this video did save me. I can practise blowing without assembling! I'm recording my progress in my channel.
Thank you so much!!! I reviewed several tutorials with skilled players who somehow did not understant that they need to cover the details of exactly how to place your top teeth and put your lip over your bottom teeth! I got a 1929 Conn "rubber" clarinet from a friend. I was going to just keep it on my desk at work, but it is was so cool I just had to learn to play it. I can now play a song! ("First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack).
Sorry after doing all that, how should you press the reed, raise the teeth together with the lip or press the reed horizontally or vertically, how should the lip touch the reed, that's the whole problem
I do make a sound but it sounds like a trumpet not like a clarinet and it only works when I put too much mouth to the mouthpiece 😢 and also my clarinet came with two barrels one is larger than the other one, I put the larger one maybe that’s the problem? what should I do? Help 😭
check the reed to make sure it's moist on both sides...make sure you don't choke off the reed when you put the mouthpiece in your mouth. Tighten the corners of your mouth and let the reed vibrate inside your mouth
Make sure you are using proper fingerings for the note you are trying to play. Best to start on the open G where you don’t actually put any fingers down.
I played clairanet in school and didn't play for many years until now I am 69 now I can't make any sound with just the mouth piece and I've forgotten alot of the fingering
It's never too late to pick it up again~. You will have to retrain your mouth again to get used to tightening the corners to play but like before it all comes with practice~! good luck!
Hello again!! I accidentally dropped my clarinet.... And the reed is broken, which is okay to me because I can always buy another. But the mouthpiece is also slightly bent, and worse is that I'm borrowing school's instrument!!! I tried blowing but it can't make any sound except for air. What should I do!! 😭
Oh no! Well it happens so I would just let your music teacher know and see if they can replace the mouthpiece for you. If it doesn’t affect the sound significantly they might just leave it until the end of the year.
Check your reed to make sure it’s wet on the backside, check the mouthpiece to make sure it’s not chipped or broken. Make sure the reed and mouthpiece are flush with each other.
hello when i blow into mouthpiece after awhile inside the holl is getting wet and the sound changes i cant get the correct sound what shall ido to not get wet?
try to keep your mouth dry so you aren't spitting too much into the mouthpiece...only way to clear the spit inside is to swab it out with a cleaning swab for the clarinet or suck the spit back up from the mouthpiece (I know it sounds gross but it is effective to get rid of the "wet sound") Also make sure your reed is not "dripping" wet...it should be soaked but not dripping wet with saliva
@@mechanicalcookie5625 say "eeeee" and then "ooooo" while holding your cheek corners in the "eee" position. I dont know much so I can be wrong but my understanding is you dont blow with your cheeks with this instrument but you how with your diaphragm.
@@mechanicalcookie5625 you have muscules in your face under your skin so yes it is going to hurt. But if you do it for an hour everyday for 5 days it won't hurt because you are strengthening those muscles
@@MusicTeacherWalker Okay! I was able to blow the clarinet for a few times today. But somehow i can't blow air into the clarinet anymore, my mouth feels breathless and dry. Is it normal for the back of my bottom lip to hurt or am I not supposed to put pressure in covering my bottom teeth?
@@itsnottoolatetostart nothing should “hurt”…the corners of your mouth should feel tired from tightening and sealing the mouth on the mouthpiece. But more often than not problems lie with how we set the reed on the mouthpiece and whether the ligature (the silver piece with the screws) is far enough down to allow proper vibration from the reed when you blow.
@@rozhyaqoob198 hmm check your mouth position then and make sure you put enough mouthpiece in your mouth and don't pinch the reed...allow it to vibrate

Nope! Water doesn’t work the same way saliva does on the reeds. Needs saliva. You’ll get used to it as you play 😅
