I’m 32 and hadn’t been to a dentist since I was 17. I’ve had an intense fear of the dentist due to an experience there as a kid. This April, I developed an infection in an upper molar that basically caused trismus and I had no choice but to go to a dentist. I almost passed out and all that was happening was an X-ray was being taken. Lol. Yikes. But then...He was SO comforting! I ended up needing it to be extracted along with all four wisdom teeth. I was so scared at that appointment that I couldn’t even hold my pen to fill out my paperwork. I’d heard so many wisdom tooth horror stories that I was terrified. I had NO pain! None. I couldn’t believe it. I got brave last week and called my dentist’s office for next steps and I went for my first cleaning in over a decade on this past Wednesday and my hygienist (which is so cool to say...”I have a hygienist” lol) was INCREDIBLE! I had no pain or anything. A 15 year fear of the dentist is GONE. It’s unreal! Thank you for all you do and thank you for creating such a judgment free and informative environment! I’ve learned so much from your channel!
We're they impacted? I just flew to Colombia, was supposed to get them extracted AND OVER THE PHONE they saw my x rays and they just told me well, in your case there can be some nerve damage and possible jaw bone fracture. -instant panic And yeah, i didn't get them pulled 😭😭 And i reeeeeally don't want to be put under Any tips? Dentist said the older you are the harder it gets.
@@LiveloveandchillPR 3 were normal and 1 was impacted so they had to go into my jaw bone to get it out. It was in May but the jaw is still healing. It does take longer the older you are for them to heal. My sockets healed up in speedy time with no issues. I had no pain. My oral surgeon used IV sedation so I was “awake” but I have no memory of anything. The worst part was the IV going in burned for just a second and everything else was a breeze. They told me about the nerve damage and possible jaw fracture risk as well. I didn’t have a choice, though. I had to get it done. It’s now December and I’ve had 4 premolars extracted also and am 5 weeks into braces. My teeth and I have been on one hell of a journey this year!
@@brickboydior8126I'm not sure how to help but just wanna say if they're mean about it isn't your fault they feel the need to bully you cause they're lives are so sad Try not to listen and get done and out. If you couldn't tell my fear personally mostly comes from the judgment that some dentists feel they have the right to pass on their patients
My fears: The fact that I've never been to the dentist(and the fear of judgement for that), and the fear of all the work I'll probably need and the money it will cost.
@@KelleyBroussardMackaig well the consultation was OK, but its what is now to come is the worry. Never realised I have broken teeth, and they all need to come out 🥺🥺
Same here, kinda, I just have a big fear of going because the vibration from the cleaning, and the high pitch noises, and the people at the dentist labels me "the hygiene girl" and their a bit rough
I’m going in for my first real appointment in over 10years. I had a consultation last week and it really wasn’t that bad. My anxiety came from just going to the consultation and seeing that needed to be done. If you also have dental anxiety, please go. You can do it. I’m now more excited to fix my teeth than anxious. You got this! You are not alone.
I am very afraid to go to the dentist. since I was little I didn't take care of my teeth and every time I went to the dentist I had a panic attack and ran away. please help me
exactly my situation. just got my first appointment today in 10 years and all they did for this round was scanning and that even scared me so much. i was shaking and crying cuz my jaw hurt from clamping down on a big heavy metal scanner thing. the girl was rlly nice thankfully.. another guy came in and was a little bit unpleasant attitude which made me feel not good,, i was nervous and asking a few questions cuz i was scared we were drilling today but he looked at me weird and said no im not that guy. then he checked out my teeth and scrapped at them a little and told me i might need a root canal and also wisdom teeth need to be removed, i was so upset after and scared, and overwhelmed. i have to get my teeth done a DAY before my bday on the 18th of september… i dont wanna be stressed i hate when i freak out.. idk what to do, my stress is so bad.
@@ImLazz hi. I m rly scared to go to the dentist but yk all my classmates have white and healthy teeth idk is just sad . I want to can smile . The thing is that I definitely have a lot of problems in my mouth rn and I m scared to go to the dentist bcz who knows what's gonna find out that I have. Some years ago I had an infection to a tooth and after so much pain the dentist said that I have to get rid of that. I was so f scared. He did the injections BUT it hurt me like hell. I SCREAMED AND HE ACTUALLY GOT SCARED . ANW , I found on Google a dentist with rly good reviews and yes. But I m scared to text her and make an appointment. Idk...I just need help;(
I'm sorry your experience sucked. Switch dentists! It's okay to keep looking until you find a good fit. I had to get a deep cleaning and still need to remove my wisdom teeth...But I like going to the dentist now! I love knowing my teeth are going to be clean. You can do this! Please don't give up and succumb to anxiety again. I straight up cried in the dentist chair, so I understand the feeling, but you CAN DO THIS! @@ImLazz
I would tell your general doctor about this, you can overcome the anxiety! It just takes a lot of will power. The ongoing anxiety is worse than going, trust me. @@Agatha_vv
Just came from a filling appointment and I can tell you I wonder why I even feared this to begin with. I spent all night watching dental needle insertion videos and educating myself. I saw young kids not even flinch while getting injected and wondered why a 26 year old like me was freaking out. Turns out the procedure was completely painless. Uncomfortable yes, the drilling part, but totally bearable for like half a minute. I closed my eyes, did not see the syringe, I had taken Valium an hour before, I also asked for numbing gel and then lastly played my favorite music. It was so quick and painless I quickly arranged to have my next filling done within a week. I honestly dont know why I had the fear, it’s unfounded.
I had a panic attack after getting local anesthetic and left after because I just couldn’t do it. This video helped me realize that place wasn’t the right fit and that I went in underprepared. Thank you. Hope I can find a dentist as anxiety informed as you!
I can totally get it! I was crying unintentionally out of high high nervousness and stress, yesterday at the dentist office when he explained that my tooth needed some drilling and scaling. I came out like a champion after the process :) I have another appointment next month at the same dental clinic and thank god I am now looking forward to it and not too scared now. if you are in Toronto, I can provide you with the clinic address. I am not trying to promote the clinic and neither do I work with them for commission, lolz. Just trying to help others who are as nervous when comes to dental treatment, as I am.
My dentist offers headphones so that you don't have to hear the drilling. As for the pain, you'll be so numbed up you don't be able to feel your face... like the Weeknd. As someone that neglected their teeth for years, I went through a long process of many fillings, 4 root canals, and 4 corresponding crowns...please just go for a consult. :) BTW They sometimes offer sedatives like Xanax or Valium if you're really anxious, but you may need someone to drive you home.
@@WizardOnAWhale7 unfortunately, I can relate and I’m going in a couple of days to finish my first root canal (I need 2 more) and I’m terrified. I’m scared something went wrong and they’ll have to take the tooth out, which was already almost the case. I’m also terrified of the environment, especially since it’s a different office from my regular dentist, which I wouldn’t mind going to. I’m literally freaking out.
Ikr. I have quite a few problems with my teeth and I'm super terrified of going to the dentists because they're obviously gonna have to fix my problems with my teeth, but I know its gonna be painful and I just can't stand teeth pain.
there are so much reasons for me: fear of pain that I used to feel when I was a kid, fear that dentist won't wait long enough for an aesthetic to work and not listen to me when I say I still can feel pain (been there too), fear that aesthetic won't work at all cause I'm stressing too much, then there are drilling noises and smell that make my stomach hurt, guilt that I let my teeth decay to this stage (even if it's not that bad, I feel like the dentist will be disgusted anyway and will judge me), and then there's the bill, cause you don't know in advance how much I have to pay and it freaks me out! I have my appointment later today and I woke up with cold sweaty hands(
exact. and I'm afraid to go for the same reasons. when I was little, I went to a clinic and I told them that I was afraid and they said "you are big" and wanted to hold me to remove a tooth. I felt helpless and wanted to run away. plz help
Im 20 yo man and I'm going to a dentist for tooth removal procedure and your video is really helpful, i love this woman ❤❤❤❤. Good luck everyone you got this ❤❤❤❤
I have a dental appointment today for a tooth emergency plus I have to get lots of work done as I haven’t been in 10 years or longer. I hate the dentist out of fear of judgement. I suffered from depression and anxiety for years and neglected myself… I mean I couldn’t of cared less if I died much less if my teeth were clean. I’m so nervous. Send prayers and encouragement. Thanks guys 🙏🏽
How did it go at the dentist? I’ve got an appointment in a couple of days and dreading it! I’m like you deffo need to get a lot of work done and have dental anxiety :(
@@ElDubz420it went really well man, glad I went, and got an implant which feels and looks just as good as my old broken tooth. I’m slowly getting more of my mouth fixed, just takes time and money, and it’s nice now for people to comment on my teeth saying “you have nice teeth”
I got a filling today and I'm always really scared when I go to the dentist due to trauma as a child. I watched this video before I went, and it gave me the courage to open up about my dental anxiety and the whole thing went so smoothly. The dentist was great and really helped me calm down and talked to me to keep me distracted. Thank you so much, Whitney, for all that you do :)
my dentist is an angel. I had trauma when i was a kid, she drilled my tooth and couse me blooding. now my new dentist is so gantle and every visit is joy.
I have sensory overload, anxiety and I’m on the autism spectrum. So going to the dentist is always a struggle for me, I had braces when I was a teenager which was not fun for me at all as I was also going through a tough time with my anxiety at the time. I then had to get my wisdom teeth taken out, which thankfully I was asleep for. Up until this past year, I didn’t go to the dentist regularly and my teeth brushing wasn’t regular either. But I found a great dentist and I am now serious about fixing my gums and teeth. They’re not horrible, but they could be better. I don’t want them to get any worse! I finally got the courage to overcome my fear and now I’m on top of things.
thank you so much for sharing your story and inspiring others to care for their teeth. so happy you found a great dentist! wishing you continued dental care and sending positive vibes your way :)
this is the biggest reason I wanna be a hygienist! When I was little I had so much anxiety and just bad feelings towards the dentist but It’s much better now, I just wanna help people feel better about going to the dentist :)
Really thank you for this. I sweat through my shirt, shake uncontrollably and burst into tears at the dentist during the "normal" cleaning. My teeth are so painful and my fear of the pain is horrible too. I do think i may have a good team now, because this morning i went for the cleaning and as i started panicking, the dentist stopped and completely slowed it down. We discussed and decided that was enough for today, and booked an appt for next week with an anti anxiety med and nitrous, to see if that will help. Taking off the pressure and telling me i didn't just "have to get through it" were very helpful. I'm incredibly ashamed of how i am at the dentist, and just hoping i can still change over time.
I am 65 years of age, always had a fear of dentist, since childhood, the worst memories) although had dental work done over the years , not satisfied with my smile, so I just made the decision, that it’s time, let them take out the old & replace with a new, panic attacks, the heart beating 100 x a minute, sweaty palms, too hot, flashes , you name it , that’s me😀😀😀😀always, tomorrow is “D” day , but I’ll get through & so will you😀😀😀
It's almost like RUclips heard me! I am literally panicking about having my very first wisdom tooth removal next week. Acknowledging the fear and anxiety does make me feel better immediately. I hope the dental surgeon I'll meet is as gentle and reassuring as you are. Your videos have helped me a lot! Very informative, easy to follow in layman terms, and you simply make things sound way easier than I imagine them to be! Thank you so much
thank you so much for commenting this! it truly means more than you know. thank yo for watching. sending you all the positive vibes and a speedy recovery!
I’m a gagger so they can’t get good x rays. Ended up getting a pano which was super easy. 3 extractions and reconstruction work scheduled. I have a super hard time getting numb but my dentist was able to figure it out. I’ll never stop being nervous but letting the provider know definitely helps a lot. If it wasn’t for Whitney’s videos I’d still be doing nothing. This was a great video.
oh my goodness thank you so much for commenting this. truly happy you are working on your dental health and I'm rooting for you to continue your care! I do have a video with tips and tricks to prevent gagging also! hope this helps: ruclips.net/video/KSP-0ZatTsQ/видео.html
It's been 15 years and I'm 47... and in the last two months I gather the courage to go . I have alot of work that needs to be done ...I am diionoised PTSD and anxiety disorder...plus dental trauma after loosing my teeth in a bad car accident. So I now been getting work done little by little.the office that I go to have good vibes like you 😊 I'm in California, but if I probably wasn't in California and wasn't it with my current dentist I would definitely have chosen you ❤ you really seem gentle and caring... I like that the dentist doesn't give me alllll the " bad news " about my teeth at once . I'm currently in therapy. And yeah I didn't even know I could talk about this with my therapist . In fact I would like to know if there are therapists that specialize in dental therapy , I mean therapists who are specialized in speaking with people with dental anxiety ? But thankfully where I go every one is so kind .as soon as they see me coming ... Leo greet me with this huge big smile because they are very aware that I'm extremely afraid . I already take Ativan for my general anxiety . I also asked my dentist about laughing gas and tomorrow I will be asking them about Twilight ..... They are so attentive. I really feel like they care how about making sure I have the right treatment and care . I think the biggest thing that hurts me about this situation is that before the accident I loved .... Okay I didn't love going lol reduce to dental malpractice and the way that the last Dennis treated me trust issues with going the dentist. But I've come too far to turn back now.... I love seeing your videos come across my page.... You're passionate enthusiasm is what gets me feeling courageous. Thank you... ❤
I haven’t been to one in years and I brush my teeth every day. I just really have such an anxiety and even paralyzing fear of the dentist since I was 6.
Thank you! Everything about the dental experience freaks me out. The drilling sound, the pressure during procedures, all the odd tools, what ifs, horror stories, dental hygienist who are rough, invasion of personal space, Judgment, etc. .. I'm supposed to go in 30 minutes and I feel like vomiting. I hate it here.
I just had an amazing experience with a dentist. The assistant was spectacular with my anxiety and that she thrives on helping anxious patients. I had a crown and I didn't feel any pain at all. I used to be too terrified to go to the dentist, and this time I was so relaxed that I could have fallen asleep during the drill. No sedation. Incredible experience that I didn't think was possible. There's actually hope with a great dentist.
I went to the dentist today after years of anxiety and fear. Like my nerves were so bad but I had to go. Turns out this new dentist is so good and practical. He was also very pretty and kind! I would really suggest you guys talking to your parent or friend or anyone you trust, and taking them with you to the appointment. Talk to the dentist first before you get treated or you could book a separate appoinment. The video was really helpful! Remember, you aren't alone! ❤
I don’t know why I have the fear but I always have. I found an incredible office last year that has been great along my treatment journey. They’re so kind and do their best to make me comfortable every single visit. I appreciate them soooooo much! I still get a sedative each time but it makes us all more at ease.
I went to the dentist today (I was always fine before today) but my dental fillings were 3 and turned out to be a 3 hour appointment. For some reason, as soon as I got anaesthesia injected I started feeling faint and I was very anxious. The Dr and his assistant tried their best to calm me down and I managed to pull through until the end! The feeling was awful though. I have 3 more fillings to do and I’m scared it will be the same thing again. The worst part for me was sitting on the chair with my head towards the floor, that position makes me feel trapped. But if I managed once, I think I can do it again.
I’ve always had struggles with dentists, I would scream when I was little every time I went and the dentist couldn’t get me to open my mouth. Eventually he sent me to a “specialist” who sat on me, and I was choking and he wouldn’t let me out. It only got worse from there and I didn’t go again until I was 9 or 10 and we finally found a dentist I can trust. I trust her so much and it’s amazing how much a good dentists for you can change your experience!
I think the first step to overcoming dental anxiety is for you to want to over come it. The next step is finding a dental clinic that cares about those who are very scared. Nothing the dental clinic does will matter if you don't want to change! (I have severe fear, i was crying amd trembling at a appointment. I'm saying this from experience)
I think more dentists in the Philippines need to watch this video. I suffer from trauma from a past dental experience in Robinson's Galleria to where I can't sleep or relax at all the day before a procedure. Most dentists don't believe me when I tell them what I went through and it's exhausting to have to repeat the story all over again to find a dentist who will. I will always have anxiety now.
I finally got my wisdom tooth extracted yesterday after putting it off for 1 and a half decades! I have a good and carinng dentist. You can try hik out if you want someone who can be more accomodating to your experience.
Hi! I'm from the Philippines too and I finally found a dentist who genuinely listens and cares about my fears and phobias, and she really adjusts her techniques etc to not make me feel uncomfortable. She even lets me watch a movie on my phone during the procedure lol the dental clinic is called "Luxe Smiles" here in Southwoods, Biñan Laguna, and it's not that far assuming you're from Manila, the dentist's name is Keneisha
About 5 years ago was my last dental visit, the dentist accidentally pushed the drill down on a nerve and my tooth was bleeding all over the place,i pushed her away and she cut herself and i left. Since then i tried to go twice and i just stepped in and started crying. Today I really had to go because i was worried about my leukoplakia (as i read on internet i have it) My sister held my hand while the dentist took of all the left over stuff from my teeth. I was crying all along ,and im still shaking ,but i did it. It actually wasnt so bad, dont be ashamed,go with someone, you can do it! Im proud of myself :)
this video & the comments are making me feel better . I went to the dentist for a tooth extraction & when the dentist fully examine my teeth I had more work to be done which made me very anxious to the point I started tearing up and my legs was shaking. I ended up going home because I couldn’t fully calm myself down. But watching this video helped me so much thank you ❤️
when I was a kid and I used to go to the dentist they would poke and stab me with the tools when they would clean my teeth and it really hurt. Now I'm a bit older I still get anxious about going to the dentist I don't like the sounds and I'm terrified of needles.
Mee too, i hate the needle, and He tries to hide it from my view, 😅“ close your eyes , count and lift your hand up when you reach 10. “ to day i got to 7 when He Said “ all done” we use hand signals for a pain scale. Try that.
My last dental appointment was probably in 2015, you've inspired me to want to make an appointment. I guess I have a super sensitive mouth, and part of the fear is the pain, cause it does hurt every time in one way or another. The worst is when they floss for me, I hate that so much and it hurts so bad. Part of it is trauma, I'm sure. When I was a kid I had a hygienist that would make me feel bad if I said something hurt. Your videos have encouraged me to reclaim my oral health. I've got a waterpik that helps me actually floss which I never used to do because it hurt with the string, I picked up an ultrasonic toothbrush that I know how to use properly, found some sensitive friendly mouthwash and toothpaste and have been trying my damnedest to get back on it. Just hope I can work up the courage to schedule one.
thank you SO much for sharing this. wishing you the best on your dental appointment - I am so happy you're caring for your teeth and sending positive vibes for continued care! thank you again for this comment - it means more than you know.
Thank you for your videos! I finally found a gentle dentist! Where I feel welcome and not judged ... I’m on my way to recovery for my teeth! Had a root canal and a crown so far... next is deep cleaning and then fillings and a mouth guard because apparently I’m a teeth grinder and I didn’t know
I finally got a mouth guard, loving it (feels weird to sleep at first). How was your root canal? Just got a crown and afraid of needing the canal in the future.
Hi ! I'm very nervous of dentist haven't been in Bout 10 to 15 years since a kid only been for emergency:( but the fact that there's so many other people who struggle makes me feel some what better and your advice is really helping THANKYOU !!!
I try to be super open and honest w my dentists when I've gone, but some make me feel infantilised. When I went to get my wisdom teeth taken out, I requested to be put under for the procedure. I told the doc right before he put in the IV needle that I have a phobia about needles and I was panicking a bit, and all he said was "ugh you're fine" and jabbed me right then. I also feel looked down on/condescended to when they tell me I should come in more often and I I have to reply that I don't have insurance so I literally can't afford to. It seems like it's being taken as non-compliance when it's really not.
I have had dental anxiety for decades. I had such a wonderful loving, kind, intuitive dentist who has now retired. I couldn’t handle the changes I saw happening at the dentist office of the person who bought her practice. So I move somewhere else. I now have a cavity. I am terrified! My previous dentist monitored things in such a way that I would probably never have ended up in this particular situation. And my new dentist has nothing to offer for my anxiety other than the medication that I already take just to get through a cleaning. I am so grateful to find a website with someone who gets it and has kindness to offer in return. Thank you. Still looking for what to do about my situation🙏❤️
Ok, new subscriber...I have to go to the dentist! cracked tooth and gum line and nerve pain now is making me look at going. I am just going to say...I really REALLY don't want to go! If it wasn't for this pain, I'd not even be searching like I have been trying to get past the anxiety. I am part of the population that traumatized as a kid and swore once I got to be an adult, I'll never step foot in a dental office again. Two pulled teeth and decades later. Here we are! Thank God for youTube! I'll find my dentist and get my deep cleaning done. This is video #6 for me. Even if it is older. You present a calming tone and make me feel as if it really will be ok. And I need that. Thank you and have a great day and week August 2022
I heve like bad dental anxiety and didn't go to dentist... For so many years I have my teeth removal from infection... And cleaning the teeth.... So nervous... And I keep watching videos... Which is helpful
When I was a little kid I had a dentist that hit me if I cried. She would lie to me and say she wasn't going to use needles and would inject me when I wasn't paying attention. She was incredibly mean and I haven't been to the dentist in many many years out of terror. Now I have dysautonomia and I'm even more worried of what would happen to me. Thank you for what you do, it gives me hope.
I wish every dentist was like you. I literally had a appointment yesterday and literally said I can’t don’t this because I was having an anxiety attack after my dentist strapped me down and inserted the iv . My dentist wasn’t calm , didn’t care, and was basically just giving me the ok bye you’re wasting my time vibe. I was trying to calm myself down because i really want to overcome this. I am so disappointed in myself because I walked out and I’ve cried all day because of this. I will see a psychiatrist to help me calm down my anxiety.
This is SO real! I have had multiple bad experiences which made me a dental hopper. I've finally found an AMAZING dental team! I still have anxiety but it doesn't get in the way of me scheduling and KEEPING my appointments now.
So happy to find this video!! I haven't been to a dentist since I was in high school and I know that I wasn't taking good care of my dental health until just a couple years ago so I have a lot of self-placed shame and anxiety about going to the dentist, but I KNOW it's something I need to do in order to take care of my health. This video encouraged me to actually reach out to a local dental office to get started on the process ❤️
Wow! That's great to hear! Plz help me. Idk. I just need to send a text. I found on Google a dentist w rly good reviews and I want to send a message to her. But I m scared. Idk...I had a trauma and I JUST DK. But I want to change . FASTER.
@@Agatha_vv honestly if they have a dental office they work at, it might be best to see if that office has a "contact us" or a "new patient info" section. The dentist I reached out to had both, and under the new patient page they had a way to reach out to them and you could add comments to it. I was up front in it and said that I had a lot of anxiety around the dentist and also some white coat syndrome, and they were super kind and worked with me through it! I ended up not going to them (insurance problems) but they were able to help me find a good dentist near me who also took my insurance! A good dentist will meet you where you're at and work toward the end goal with you 😊
I don't really know why I'm scared to go, but I feel like I can't. I think it might be because I have a huge phobia of needles. I'm also only 14 so I can't just book an appointment. When I was younger, my mum didn't prioritise going to the dentist because she was scared herself. However, recently, I've been getting really interested in dental things and I want to become a dentist one day. I don't know if I can be a dentist if I'm scared of it myself. I haven't gone to the dentist in about 7 years, but I will try and go. Thank you so much for making this video, I will definitely try these :)
I have my first appointment for a deep teeth clean (we split it into 2 appts for my mouth to have a break) and I am so scared. I do go to a dentist that does sedation dentistry, and I asked for oral conscious sedation, but in my mind since I'll still technically be awake, I am beyond freaked. I googled videos and found your channel. Thanks so much for making these to help people with dental anxiety.
I'm at the dentist right now. First time in like 10 years, even before that I only went like twice when I was a teenager. I'm 30. My biggest problem is feeling anxiety and gagging reflexes. I'll let you know how my first visit was!
I had all my top teeth removed and my immediate denture placed in I told the dentist I was nervous and scared and I found that just him talking to me explaining what he was doing and encouraging me
Thank you for your advice you really helped me I have cavities and I’ve been stressed all week. You helped me a little bit but I’m always gonna have that fear, I appreciate you making this video for the whole world much love 💕
I love going to the dentist. Its like a spa trip for me. I even called my dentist yesterday asking if i can see him 3 weeks ahead of my 6 month appointment.
Thank you for sharing this video! I am in a dental hygiene program and we are about to start preclinical next semester (which is exciting), but I am nervous because I have no clinical experience. I have never in my life have had dental anxiety, but I now have a better understanding of how these patients feel. I hope to become a great clinician once I get over my own anxiety. Help other patients with anxiety. ❤️
I don't have a dental anxiety, I have teeth anxiety! It seems to me they decay every second and I can't brush them enough to prevent them from ruining. And yet I'm 25 and I have lost one tooth already for periodontal disease, and I always think how I won't have teeth when I'm older. Now dentists have anxiety seeing me.
True. Even after brushing my teeth twice daily I get cavities and my dentist is always ready to drill my teeth all the time. I wonder what would happen in old age. And then there are people who hardly brush their teeth and still have 0 cavities. 😭😭😭
Going in today as a 33 year old who gets panic attacks when it come to the dentist. Have not properly been since a teen. Feeling more prepared after this video and have researched and asked for a dentist who can deal with my anxiety. Am scared but going to express that i need supprt and to go at a slow pace. Wish me luck. I dream that I'll be able to go to the dentist without having the panic
Trust me, going to a good dentist can change everything. I had years of trauma when I went as a kid where my dentist was horrible and caused my major anxiety. I always thought that when I’m older and can control it, I would avoid going to the dentist as much as I can. Then 5 months ago, my mom took me to a new dentist. It changed my entire view on it. Not only is my fear slowly fading away, but funny enough I actually can’t wait to go and enjoy being there. I have gotten over the last few months and still need a lot of work done. I have a ton of cavities and most were filled already. I also need some root canal’s and crowns. I’m still a tiny bit nervous, but I trust that I’ll be comfortable during it all. My new dentist is kind, caring, will always make sure I’m comfortable, explain everything step by step and reassure me. I’m sure there are plenty of other dentists like that. All you need to do is google dentists, look at reviews, ask people you know and make sure it’s all good before going. It can change everything
My uncle who's developmentally disabled is super afraid of going to the dentist. He only lives with a caregiver somewhere in California and it's hard for him to overcome his dental phobia.
I just had a root canal and before I went, I was petrified. To anyone who is reading this, and has extreme anxiety, rest assured that your worry is way worse than the procedure. It did not hurt at all, absolutely no pain. I was only in the dentist office for 45 minutes. Do not believe all the horror stories that people tell. I faint so easily, and it's always a fear I have but I went to the dentist well prepared. I brought my own little fan to plug in, listened to music with my earbuds, wore my compression socks, and my doctor prescribed me low dose of Xanax to take an hour before my appt. Just had to have someone drive me there and back because I was slightly groggy. For those who suffer with anxiety know that we have to do whatever makes us feel a little more comfortable, and I made it through the appt with flying colors, and you will too. Also, try to get an early morning appt so that it is done and behind you. Relax, your fear and worry is worse than the actual dentist visit.
do you live in the US? i have a potential root canal soon and i am kind of terrified. my mom had a root canal before years ago and she HATED it. it's been like years since i went to a dentist and a root canal is what i wanted to avoid, but sadly it snuck up on me heh. i see videos of root canal and seen people say to not overthink it since it's not that bad. it is comforting. ^^ i am praying non stop that nothing goes wrong. but my imagination says otherwise.. eurjighnveiruhgbwi screw anxiety >_
@@funzie6407 Yes I live in the US. Our imaginations tend to take us places we don't always need to go. Many years ago I had another root canal, and it was terrible, BUT, times are so different now. I honestly didn't feel any pain and I was honestly out of the dentist's office faster than I expected. I'm pretty sure that your mind will be way more scary than the actual procedure. Try to remember that a root canal saves you from having to get your tooth extracted, and when it's all said and done, you'll be glad you did it. I was so nervous too, but after the appointment, all I had done was worry myself for nothing!
@@cheryllavoie3290 i see. it's true that medicine is more advance than we used to have. i was considering pulling the tooth out because i want to avoid the pain. but if the root canal isn't too painful, i might consider. and i was questioning because i thought the EU had a different way of doing things since a long time ago, someone told me that they hated the procedure. thanks for replying ^^ it did help me not have to worry (well probably until my day comes but knowing it doesn't hurt helps) mom schedules an appointment in 2 months (quiet a waiting list here heh) and they said they will try to get me sooner if there are cancellations.
I had to go in for sever pain in a tooth. I had not been to the dentist since I was a kid, I’m 28 now. They found a very sever and deep cavity that needed to be done right then and there. It was close to being a root canal. Three minutes in, the local anesthetic mixed with my very high anxiety made me start to have a panic attack. Doc said the anesthetic had a side effect of rising your blood pressure a small bit but with my anxiety I already had on top of it worsened it. They gave me all the time I needed to take some breaths. Apologized like crazy and they asked if they should do small breaks in between filling it. Helped immensely. It’s been six months and I’m going in tomorrow for a cleaning nervous but remember how amazing they were helps me so much
Dentist have caused my dental anxiety. I had one drill right into me without me being numb after I told them I didn’t feel numb. Then a different one lied about what my insurance covered and I almost paid 1400 out of pocket - got a second opinion and insurance covered all but $35.00. Another one told me my front tooth needed a root canal and a crown due to bone loss- got a second opinion and the other dentist said I had great bone around my front top teeth and showed me the X-ray to prove it. I am terrified of dentists and almost feel like some are just scammers
i am a 17 year old girl who is deadly afraid of the dentist but when i do get there, i always tell the dentist i'm scared and asking them if it'll hurt 🤣 and they're always so kind and understanding so just start talking to your dentist if you're also scared because they're the only people who will understand your fear 😭🤌🏻
Thank you for making this video! It would be lovely if more dental professionals had your outlook on this. I had a dentist scare me so much I didn’t go to the dentist for three years which resulted in a very painful tooth that pain meds were barely helping with which ended in a RCT. I’m very thankful I’ve found a lovely dental team now, they put me at so much ease I don’t need any gas while having procedures done. Where I go they’ve got tv’s on the ceiling you watch while they’re doing your procedure and only just from watching this video have a realised how much that takes my mind off what is happening, I guess I’m too busy concentrating on tv I don’t have time to worry what is happening and if it’s going to hurt.
I went to a dentist before I was on medication for anxiety. He wasn’t very patient, which made it so much worse. I’m now on medication for anxiety and it has helped a LOT! So I have an appointment with a sedation dentist in 2 weeks. My sensitive gag reflex is my main issue. It’s better for everyone involved if they can sedate me. I’ll have a nap, they can do their work without me panicking and moving, we can all go home happy.
I'm 20 years old right now and I haven't seen the dentist when I was 12 years old. I'm so scared of going because of the pain and all of the noises and everything, but I'm most afraid of the judgment. I'm afraid of going only because of my last experience and I'm trying my very best to overcome the fear of the dental. For the first time in many years ill be going in for my first appointment on Monday because I think I've developed not one but two! Molar infections in my teeth. Ill be bringing my brother with me to my appointment because I'm still scared of going. Thank you for making this video because it definitely made me feel abit better thank you so much🥲😊
Thank you for this. I have so much anxiety due to some past dental trauma. I have to get a failed root canal fixed on a molar tomorrow. I know it will be better once the dead tooth is gone but my heart is racing. Thanks for being kind about this 💕
I have a big phobia, but an infection has caused me to go to the dentist. Since I got the infection, I have been super nervous and started watching videos about different procedures. I am afraid of needles, knives, loud sounds in my mouth, and all other machines. I am trying to stay calm and take the leap of faith, and go to the dentist today before the infection gets worse. Sigh! I am nervous at the moment.
I’m about to have a tooth repair for the first time in many many years. I haven’t been to a dentist since years before COVID and my teeth health has been neglected. I’m very scared but I’ll update after with how it went ❤
Your videos have really helped me understand what’s going on. I always freak out at the dentist. And I always tell them and they alll always say it’s okay!! You aren’t the only one. After watching your videos i’m not only feeling seen and heard, i’m learnin :)
Hey everyone!! just letting yall know, you're NOT alone 💕 It's OKAY to feel your feelings. I promise that you will be okay, and get through it. Explain that you're nervous, anxious, ect. to your dentist. Even if you're more worried about, say, the tools and needles, let them know that as well! Ask if you may listen to music with headphones, or ask for a distraction!! But just REMEMBER that you're not alone in this. 💕🥰 sending positive love and light!
I'm going to the dentist for the first time in 3 years on Thursday. I'm terrified of the dentist. I hate the injections and the drilling. This video kind of helped.
Thank you so much. My mom just broke her tooth meaning we’ll have a big family dentist appointment. Our family doesn’t take very good care of our teeth until recently. I have two cavities and one I believe I may have to either get extracted or have a root canal and I have really bad anxiety. I have only been i the dentist once and it wasn’t even for me. My friend I had a sleepover with had a dentist appointment. I’m hoping my dentist is this great!
Just wanted to say that I love your videos and that I'm currently training to be a dental hygienist. I have had fears of the dentist as a kid but I got over it when I would ask my dentist or hygienist to tell me what was going on and what they were doing. It made me feel much more comfortable understanding what was happening and that's actually what started my interest in dentistry. Anyway I'm currently nervous about interacting with patients for the first time and I was wondering if you could post a video on how to make your patients feel more comfortable or how to spot when they're nervous.
Another thing that can help {at least for me} is to put some headphones and listen to music during the appointment. Have you ever had patients do that? I don’t exactly struggle with dental anxiety, but I love music and I enjoy taking my iPod touch to my appointments. I’ve been doing that since I was 11.
This has helped Whitney, thank you! Half of the time I really think it is in my head and I overthink it! I do think it is the unknown but I just can’t help but get anxious! I used to be so bad and feeling sick before my appointment! I’ve told my dentist and she is very gentle and understanding! If it wasn’t for your channel I would still be so bad but these videos really do help! Thank you again! x
oh my goodness thank you so much for saying this friend. so so so happy to hear you're caring for your teeth and rooting for you to continue! positive vibes your way!
Had a full panic attack when it was my turn to get wisdom teeth removed. It was awful my hands went numb and couldn’t breathe fast enough. The IV with the partial sleep was the only way I could have made it, it went by really quick after the medication took effect. Bottom left was impacted and top left was fully out but removed to prevent from hitting the gums while chewing. The office and dr was amazing but really pray to never have to do it again
Thank you. I have a fear of tests and bad news and my dentist was an army dentist. So I told him skip the bad news and just tell me you can fix it and that works out for me better. I had a bad experience with a dentist that criticized that I smoked (not much) and that many things could be a problem. I had to change dentists for that reason.
I use a VR headset connected to phone with built in headphones when I go to the dentist. Its the only way I can get through it. I have years of anxiety from bad experiences in the past. Not only that I don't numb easily and it can take 3 shots. The VR works very well and would recommend it to help with relaxing.
I have anxiety in general and mainly it has to do with things that make me queasy and I have a fear of passing out. This anxiety has stemmed from trauma and has been hard to cope with. I have been putting off going to the dentist even though I have cavities that need to be fixed. I still feel uneasy about the unknown and it’s hard for me to bring myself to go because of my anxiety. Thank you for making this video. It definitely made me feel better but I still feel trapped by my fears. I think I just have to make myself go but it’s very hard to convince myself.
5:44 it's good to know that the dental professional is legally obliged to inform me that I need a filling. Because my previous dentist didn't informed me that I needed a filling and if I haven't decided to change dentist I would have lost that tooth because of a simple cavity. But I don't know what the laws in my country (Greece) state regarding dental professionals.
Due to the pandemic, I have not been to the dentist. Previously, I had a period of time where I needed constant dental work done and the dentist was less than nice about explaining everything to me. But after, I was able to be cavity free for 10+ years with consistent trips to the dentist. But now, since I've put it off for so long, I feel like if I go it's going to need a lot of work done and that scares me. I'm worried it will cost me a fortune to get back to good dental health as I don't have the best dental insurance. All this makes me want to keep putting it off, but I'm going to try to make an appointment soon.
I have a dentist appointment tomorrow, and I haven’t been to a dentist in YEARS. I had a horrible dentist (that actually was sued) when I was about 10 that drilled on my teeth when I told them I wasn’t numb and it hurt so bad. It absolutely traumatized me. I think I want to be sedated honestly.
Any advice on when you don't think your dentist is taking your fear seriously. I had my first appointment in 10 years earlier this week and instead of leaving feeling good for taking the decision to face my phobia I felt judged for letting my teeth get to where they are now even though I explained that due to a sinus issue I was unable to get them cleaned as I couldn't breathe through my nose so any dental work felt like I was being smothered. The dentist didn't give me time or explain stuff to me, she just kind of did stuff, like she didn't ask me could she take x-rays just kind of shoved the things in my mouth and said 'that wasn't that bad' even though I was visibly gagging. I felt like she was treating my teeth and not me as a person who has teeth. I'd find a different dentist if I could but I had tried about 6 other dental practices first that had no space.
I have this problem too! I'm visibly shaking and crying already mid procedure because my dentist kept either nonchalantly commenting about my condition in a very condescending manner lots of times (i wasnt really taking care of myself due to depression & family issues), disregarding my pain signals etc until i finally snapped and she abruptly end the appointment.
I walked out of my dentist appointment feeling judged too 😟 I'm nervous to go back for my teeth cleaning and don't know how to handle it, I think I'm just gonna take a deep breath and go anyway.

I just flew to Colombia, was supposed to get them extracted
AND OVER THE PHONE
they saw my x rays and they just told me well, in your case there can be some nerve damage and possible jaw bone fracture.
-instant panic
And yeah, i didn't get them pulled 😭😭
And i reeeeeally don't want to be put under
Any tips?

Try not to listen and get done and out.
If you couldn't tell my fear personally mostly comes from the judgment that some dentists feel they have the right to pass on their patients
"There's no judgement" .
All the dentists I've been before: let me introduce myself
My fears: The fact that I've never been to the dentist(and the fear of judgement for that), and the fear of all the work I'll probably need and the money it will cost.

I think my anxiety stems from guilt since I struggle with actually brushing my teeth routinely.

Thank you for sharing this
I had a panic attack after getting local anesthetic and left after because I just couldn’t do it. This video helped me realize that place wasn’t the right fit and that I went in underprepared. Thank you. Hope I can find a dentist as anxiety informed as you!
We can all only hope for that
This is what happened to me. After my local anesthesia i had panic attack and didnt push through with my extraction
Great, now I'll talk myself into having a panic attack from anesthesia
@@luckysarinawhy did the anesthesia caused you to have a panic attack ?
It’s the drilling sounds and pain that scare the crap out of me.

@@WizardOnAWhale7 unfortunately, I can relate and I’m going in a couple of days to finish my first root canal (I need 2 more) and I’m terrified.
I don’t like the scraping thingy
there are so much reasons for me: fear of pain that I used to feel when I was a kid, fear that dentist won't wait long enough for an aesthetic to work and not listen to me when I say I still can feel pain (been there too), fear that aesthetic won't work at all cause I'm stressing too much, then there are drilling noises and smell that make my stomach hurt, guilt that I let my teeth decay to this stage (even if it's not that bad, I feel like the dentist will be disgusted anyway and will judge me), and then there's the bill, cause you don't know in advance how much I have to pay and it freaks me out! I have my appointment later today and I woke up with cold sweaty hands(
Hope everything went ok

I'm 33, haven't been to a dentist since I was 14 and pregnant. I finally made an appointment next week for a consultation.
Hope it went well!
You can also request diff hygienist if available.
yes! that is such a great point! bringing someone in your support system with you! so happy to hear you found a good place! positive vibes my friend!
I am so so sorry this happened to you . That is very very traumatizing.
Never even thought of it that way. Thank you
I think more dentists in the Philippines need to watch this video.
You can try hik out if you want someone who can be more accomodating to your experience.
find someone else
Working towards overcoming my fears one trip at a time.
About 5 years ago was my last dental visit, the dentist accidentally pushed the drill down on a nerve and my tooth was bleeding all over the place,i pushed her away and she cut herself and i left. Since then i tried to go twice and i just stepped in and started crying.
Today I really had to go because i was worried about my leukoplakia (as i read on internet i have it)
My sister held my hand while the dentist took of all the left over stuff from my teeth. I was crying all along ,and im still shaking ,but i did it.
It actually wasnt so bad, dont be ashamed,go with someone, you can do it!
Im proud of myself :)
I bring a stress ball with me. It helps so much!
yes! a stress ball is such a great idea!
@@TeethTalk is a fidget toy of any kind good?
Really maybe I should try
@@tajsfun5880 yeah a fidget toy will work fine, should help distract you
this video & the comments are making me feel better .
Worst part is walking in and sitting in the chair waiting to be called 😑
Great video, had my 1st appointment in yrs. I was so nervous. The hygienist was so sweet, she held my hand. 🦷
I never knew this is a thing ,I thought I was the odd one who gets nervous visiting dentist’s
never odd! it's totally a thing!
How’d it go
Same I have gagging issues
How did it go ?
I had all my top teeth removed and my immediate denture placed in I told the dentist I was nervous and scared and I found that just him talking to me explaining what he was doing and encouraging me
Thank you for your advice you really helped me I have cavities and I’ve been stressed all week. You helped me a little bit but I’m always gonna have that fear, I appreciate you making this video for the whole world much love 💕
I love going to the dentist. Its like a spa trip for me. I even called my dentist yesterday asking if i can see him 3 weeks ahead of my 6 month appointment.
Wow, I think I actually hate you!☺
Thank you for sharing this video! ❤️
yes! wishing you the best on your toothy career! it sounds like you're already going to be an amazing clinician! thank you for watching!
I think I have a gum disease idk my gums are like red
@@bishyfishy2699 you've got to see the dentist if so, in case it's gingivitis it can be reversible
There is no getting over my fear it will be there for life :(
I wish I could give you a hug❤️ it gets better I promise
Me too
Me too. 😪😢
I feel this.
My uncle who's developmentally disabled is super afraid of going to the dentist. He only lives with a caregiver somewhere in California and it's hard for him to overcome his dental phobia.
i’m petrified of getting teeth removed and not the needle but the pressure and cracking noises you’ll get 😭
For me it’s the xrays believe it or not, gag reflux gives me anxiety 🥴 Going in today for that and a teeth cleaning!
@@cheryllavoie3290 i see. it's true that medicine is more advance than we used to have. i was considering pulling the tooth out because i want to avoid the pain. but if the root canal isn't too painful, i might consider. and i was questioning because i thought the EU had a different way of doing things since a long time ago, someone told me that they hated the procedure. thanks for replying ^^ it did help me not have to worry (well probably until my day comes but knowing it doesn't hurt helps)
mom schedules an appointment in 2 months (quiet a waiting list here heh) and they said they will try to get me sooner if there are cancellations.
I cried watching the entire video. Thank you😭
I got an appointment for a filling in 9 hours. I'm very scared, but this vid helped me a little. I just cant wait to be done
Ironically, if I had to be awake, I prefer the noises. I like to know what else I have to sit through. But sedation is the way to go for me.
Thank you for making this video because it definitely made me feel abit better thank you so much🥲😊

this helped me get over my nerves and get my fillings done, THANK YOU
Thank you for this, I wouldn't have realized until I went down the list of things that might bother someone...it's the smell!
After a carbonate injection I start to shake a little I was told it's anxiety! I really don't know what or why this happens! Great video!

How is it
@@haven4374 it's scary but not too bad.
I get pretty nervous any time I go whether it’s a filling or extraction. But this video helps and it helped my anxiety when I go back soon. Thanks!
@@TeethTalk you’re welcome! I’m going to continue i think I would be worse if didn’t. Thank you!
For me its the judgment of how bad the dentist\hygienist thinks of how bad my teeth are.
The office and dr was amazing but really pray to never have to do it again
i overcomed my dental anxiety yeahhh wish me guyz ...its really simple reward yourself after your surgery,,it really helps,,best wishes❤❤❤
I just had a panic attack watching this cause I’m so scared😭
Me too!
Yup same
And I’m scared to go then have a panic attack 😩
Me too😢
Thank you. I have a fear of tests and bad news and my dentist was an army dentist. So I told him skip the bad news and just tell me you can fix it and that works out for me better. I had a bad experience with a dentist that criticized that I smoked (not much) and that many things could be a problem. I had to change dentists for that reason.
You just gave me a shot of courage to make an appointment I've put off for too long. Many thanks.
you got this! positive vibes :)
