I remember sitting in my office listening to a discussion in the hallway about why the copier wasn't working. One of the seasoned workers who had been there forever was walking by, and they asked him. I heard him open the paper drawer, then say, "it ain't got no gas in it" in a perfect imitation Carl. When my wife and I bought our first house, her uncle gave us a push mower as a present. A few months later, it stopped running so I called him up to ask for help. He asked when was the last time I filled it up, and then said "it ain't got no gas in it" in this weird accent. It stuck with me because I couldn't tell if he was trying to make me feel dumb, or what.

You learn the hard way as a mechanic this is the way to troubleshoot. Took him 2 seconds to check the gas where a teardown wouldve taken an hour or two.
One time my boss n I changed a main engine control on a jet engine over 2 days. No change in issue on the ops check. Only thing left we could think of was that the N1 speed sensor, although it checked good electrically, could be bad mechanically. Took 1 hour to change it. It fixed the issue.
... Needless to say, we were pissed.

One of my close friends growing up was and is, quite simply, a mechanical savant who excelled from everything from wrenching, to coding, and even day trading. We grew up in a remote west Texas town and really knew nothing of our lives beyond our county (except he managed to make it out to the US naval academy). His uncle and grandfather had a mechanic shop there in town and my friend worked in there as a child, becoming ase certified at a young age. He could fix anything from computers to semi trucks. He had a fuse taped to his toolbox with a poster that said “simple stuff first!”. Apparently he had damn near overhauled an RV before figuring out that a burned fuse was all it took to fix a problem. We chuckle about this scene all the time.

I met BB about 14 years ago when I was living in Colorado. I was working for Window World at the time and did a job in a small town called Lyons about an hour North of Denver. I pulled the work order that morning for what would be a 2 day job and the name on the invoice said Robert Thornton. I remember thinking wouldn't it be crazy if this guy turned out to be Billy Bob and was even talking about it on the drive up north with my partner.
Sure enough, it was him. What a genuine down to earth dude. He put burgers on the grill and cooked us lunch and shared his beer with us on the last day of the job and bullshited with us for a good hour. I decided to ask him if there was one particular film that he enjoyed working on the most and he said "Friday Night Lights" was a blast and also noted "Sling Blade" as his most challenging role.
It's no wonder we don't hear from him or see him much anymore. He's way too authentic of a dude to play around in the woke Hollywood cesspool.

Last time I saw something like this happen was when one of my computer repair students couldn’t figure out why the computer wasn’t starting up. Turned out that another student unplugged it to test out another device. The first thing I did to help this student was to look to see if it was plugged in. Lol.

Last time *I* saw something like this happen was coming back from lunch at an Engineering job I had. FOUR other Engineers were trying to get into the new (HOT) secretary's car because she locked her keys in it.! Now *I* knew how to unlock cars with a breadknife or a piece of strapping but I stood there watching these guys for a minute or so. Arguing about how to do this or that. I looked through the driver's window at the passenger side door. Then walked over and opened the UNLOCKED door, reached in and grabbed her keys. Shut the door and handed them to her and walked inside without a word! OOH those guys were PISSED! AND guess who SHE asked out?

We often don't. I spent 4 hours diagnosing a computer to find why it all of a sudden wouldn't playback youtube videos. Never thought to try and play a video on another device to find out that the playback error was not a spontaneous driver or hardware issue. No RUclips was down, it was up but it was sort of down.

When I was a young man in the military I got called into the CIC (Combat Information Center) because the officer of the watch's main console wasn't working. This was a college educated women with a degree who was in charge of the entire operations department.
I moved the mouse... it had went into power save mode because she hadn't touched it in 2 hours.

I work as a diesel mechanic at a Love's and I got called to help with our maintenance truck. They said it wouldn't start and that it was the battery. So I grabbed a small jump pack and walked to the truck. I got in, turned the key, and it cranked over no problem. I asked the maintenance man when they fill it last and got "I dunno..." Long story short, I threw two gallons of gas in it and it fired right up. I remind them daily that these trucks dont run on hopes and dreams.
